Andrew Dougherty first learned Russian and some Spanish and French before pursuing Chinese. Sensing the opportunity China held, Andrew pursued Chinese language studies in the early 2000's. This opened opportunities that kept him in China for nearly two decades working in the financial sector, but also somehow unwittingly was the vehicle where he launched his side career rapping about China's diverse political and social landscape. Join Jared as he talks with Andrew about his unique journey, humorous stories, and insightful perspectives. David L'Hommedieu was trained as an opera singer, attending The American Boychoir School in Princeton, NJ, which many consider the pre-eminent professional boychoir school in the United States. As a member of the choir, David regularly performed at the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. As an adult, David continued performing with Opera Companies in major venues in the United States and Europe. But after receiving a Masters in Music and Voice Performance, David left the touring life of Professional Opera in order to become the Director of Worship and the Arts at Pine Street Church in historic downtown Boulder, CO. I wanted to explore the "Why" of such a decision, as well as his strong belief that the arts, and in particular music, is essential to a vital spiritual life. I also explore David's most recent project as the co-creator, along with the Pastor of Pine Street Church, Andrew Dougherty, of the Hyphenated Life Podcast, which will officially launch in October of this year.

For many magicians, playing cards have an undeniable fascination; enthusiasts eagerly snatch up every newly released pack they can get their hands on. (As someone wryly posted on Facebook, designer decks are the magical equivalent of Beanie Babies.) For serious playing-card collectors, their interest transcends the mere aesthetic appeal of new back and face designs. They study the history of playing card manufacturing: the mechanical processes involved, the innovations discovered, and the businessmen who headed the companies that provided settlers, gamblers, and just-plain-ordinary folk with a convenient way to pass the time. When it comes to the history of playing cards, Lee Asher and Jason McKinstry are two of the most knowledgeable people on the planet. Lee Asher is know for his many contributions to card magic. Jason McKinstry is not a magician; he is a collector and historian, and he has recently published the first volume of a new series of books: Paper Empires – A Historical Journey of America’s Early Playing Card Makers. The three of us had a lively discussion about playing card history, with a focus on two of the major players – Samuel Hart and Andrew Dougherty. We also discussed how improved card manufacturing technology influenced the development of advanced card magic techniques and the fact that we’re currently living in a golden age of playing card production. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/michaelclose/support
