Also critical to the casting process are audience perceptions of race on stage and in film. We strive to craft performances in ways that respect, care for, and honor individuals, cultures, and communities of color. Furthermore, we recognize that the practice of white-washing erases culturally and racially specific stories and experiences. White-washing takes away opportunities from people of color and reinforces the dangerous notion of white superiority. Therefore, we reject this practice. In light of this, we seek to be inclusive and color-conscious not only in our casting but also in the material we choose to stage. In The Dancer's Voice: Performance and Womanhood in Transnational India (Duke UP, 2022) Rumya Sree Putcha theorizes how the Indian classical dancer performs the complex dynamics of transnational Indian womanhood. Putcha argues that the public persona of the Indian dancer has come to represent India in the global imagination—a representation that supports caste hierarchies and Hindu ethnonationalism, as well as white supremacist model minority narratives. Generations of Indian women have been encouraged to embody the archetype of the dancer, popularized through film cultures from the 1930s to the present. Through analyses of films, immigration and marriage laws, histories of caste and race, advertising campaigns, and her own family's heirlooms, photographs, and memories, Putcha reveals how women's citizenship is based on separating their voices from their bodies. In listening closely to and for the dancer's voice, she offers a new way to understand the intersections of body, voice, performance, caste, race, gender, and nation. On this episode, we hear from conductor Brandon Eldredge and soprano Tessa McQueen about Act One of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer's chamber opera, TWO REMAIN. Act One focuses on the true story of Polish poet Krystyna Zywulska surviving the Holocaust – and the psychological trauma she dealt with the rest of her life. It's based on her searing memoir of 1946, “I Survived Auschwitz.” Brandon and Tessa share more about Krystyna's life, about how challenging it is to perform and interpret a story of this magnitude, and how important it is to keep telling these stories. Brandon Eldredge has built a broad-scoped knowledge and experience as a conductor, pianist, and operatic coach, working across the United States, Germany, and Sweden. He is CCO's Associate Conductor and Chorus Master this summer, working on all three productions. During the year, he is on staff at Virginia Opera as Assistant Conductor and Chorus Master. Soprano Tessa McQueen is a first year Studio Artist in the Bonfils-Stanton Artists Training Program, and in addition to her role of Krystyna Zywulska in TWO REMAIN, she is in the chorus of Die Fledermaus and several opera scenes for the Short Works performances. Tessa received her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from Oklahoma City University and will begin her Master's degree at Rice University this fall. If you're anything like me, you probably start your day with hot coffee and short prayers. Lord, give me strength, help me wake up, please make the baby sleep a little bit longer, please be the patience I come up short with. You might be mentally reviewing and ordering your tasks for the day, or you might prefer to wing it. You might be readying children for school or gearing up for “long days of small things” with your littles, as the author and theologian Catherine McNiel so aptly phrases it in her book of the same name. Whatever season of mothering you are in, I imagine your plate is full and your capacity for care might be waning. You are doing all that you can and trusting that God's grace will provide for all that falls through the cracks, and these days, it may feel like pretty much everything is. Momma Theologians Practical/ Prayerful Takeaways 1. Ask Holy Spirit to show you if there are any areas in your life where you could more wholeheartedly support the wellbeing of your family? 2. Do something out of the ordinary for your kids—bake them a batch of chocolate chip cookies on a Wednesday afternoon and tell them (and yourself) how delicious God's love is! 3. There are 221 references to the word “build” in the ESV translation of Scripture. Spend some time on biblegateway.com reading through the verses referencing this word. Pick one Scripture to re-write in your own words, and meditate on what God is showing you through this verse or passage. Featured teacher for Vocal Health Education and co-host of the Thinking Voice podcast, Robert Sussuma joins Alexa this week on Singing Teachers Talk. He's here to discuss how you can develop a singer's self awareness and clarifying intention. Robert will also be presenting at BAST's Focus On: The Body and the Singer event on the 27th of June.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Feldenkrais lessons are designed to work at the level where your system runs the system. They update you from within at this deep core nervous system level so that when you go to do things in a more conscious way, then the system is already there to support you.  In the Feldenkrais method there are two modalities for doing this, functional integration which is hands on and none verbal, and the other version is awareness through movement or ATMs, which are verbally led.  Teaching someone to become self aware involves a lot of novelty, telling them to do something strange or something they know how to do but in a totally new way. It's tricking the nervous system into paying attention through novelty.  These awareness lessons are like experiments outside of life that get deep into the system. When you come back to life, if the system has truly changed, there is a change in the self image, in the nervous system, in the foundation of how you act. The lesson will automatically have an effect on that action when you do that action again.    BEST MOMENTS ‘I have a student who calls it updating the motherboard'  ‘Working with novelty is really effective but strange compared to what most people do'  ‘The lesson isn't what we do, it's what we're learning having done it'  ‘We can all do the same lesson and learn something different'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training  Guest Website: @robert_sussuma   Relevant Links & Mentions:  BAST Focus On The Body & The Singer Event: https://www.basttraining.com/event/focus-on-the-body-and-the-singer/ Vocal Health Education: vocalhealth.co.uk The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education  Thinking Voice Podcast - The Endings Conversation: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4WPhNUEgbRulnsf6OBd313?si=6e04fa1041bb4d38 Vocology in Practice: www.vocologyinpractice.org Singing Teachers Talk Podcast - Ep. 32 - The Bio-Psycho-Social Model with Stephen King: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4R13bvilWjwQnd9WOfTiVc?si=1ffb4c437bdd4f34 The Joys of Singing and Sex?!? - A Somatic Approach (Blog): https://thesingingself.com/joys-of-singing-and-sex-somatic-approach/ Sense and Sensuality Event: https://thesingingself.com/voice-incorporated-2022-sense-and-sensuality/   ABOUT THE GUEST  Robert Sussuma, a native New Yorker, is an explorer, a life-long learner and a connoisseur of connections: movement, speaking and singing, voice science, emotions, music history, motor learning, existentialism, neurology-in-action, consciousness and deep personal development - to name a few. ((Read this full reflection here)) Momma Theologians Prayerful/Practical Takeaways Read Proverbs 18:24, and ask God to illuminate how Jesus might be inviting you into a deeper understanding of how he is the “friend who sticks closer than a brother.” How does this friendship affect how we lead our children? Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Katy came to the East Coast to attend Haverford College and then received her first Masters in Voice Performance at Temple University. After attempting to make it in the opera world for several years, Katy decided music therapy was a better career path. She still sings professionally, mostly as the soprano section leader at a church, a professional caroler during the holidays, and an actress in local musical theater productions. Katy is also a mom of two kids, a four year old and a nine month old, and is passionate about maternal and family mental health.Sources for today's History Lesson: Blog post “History of Early Childhood Education: Then and Now” by Steven Bonnay; www.k12academics.com; www.musictherapy.org; www.uphs.upenn.edu; wikipedia.org; kids.kiddle.co;Resources: Laurie Berkner - laurieberkner.com, music for children and their familiesKreative Kids Music - www.kreativekidsmusic.orgsummer programs, classes, ideasweekly support group for parents of young children, onlineMeets on Tuesdays @12:30pmQuestions/comments/concerns? As an adult, David continued performing with Opera Companies in major venues in the United States and Europe. But after receiving a Masters in Music and Voice Performance, David left the touring life of Professional Opera in order to become the Director of Worship and the Arts at Pine Street Church in historic downtown Boulder, CO. I wanted to explore the "Why" of such a decision, as well as his strong belief that the arts, and in particular music, is essential to a vital spiritual life. I also explore David's most recent project as the co-creator, along with the Pastor of Pine Street Church, Andrew Dougherty, of the Hyphenated Life Podcast, which will officially launch in October of this year.

For most people, your voice is simply the tool you use to communicate. But for Gina Razón, this week’s guest on the Confident Communications podcast, the voice is much more than that. And when you don’t use your breath properly, your voice (and your credibility) can suffer. A former opera singer and current public speaker and voice coach, Gina shares with us why the voice is a tattletale for your confidence and exactly what speakers do when they’re not as confident or as prepared as they’d like to be. And she passes along tips that any speaker, no matter what kind of room they’re in, can use to be more confident. Even if the ex-boyfriend who broke your heart 10 years ago walks into the room. Probably most fascinating is the connection that the body--even the big toe--has with your voice and how dynamic your speech is. Gina also explores how generational inflection is a part of life today and the superpower that each gender has in their voice. Gina firmly believes that there is one special “birthright to everyone who breathes air.” And the answer comes out loud and clear in this episode. Some of our episodes talk about a conductor’s journey as a musician, or their philosophical understanding of the nature of choral music. Some episodes are pure toolkits: here’s what you need to solve your problems. This episode has the rare distinction of being both. Dr. Kronauer and Ryan cover the “hows” of directing teenage male voices, as well as the “whys” behind them. You’re going to want to listen to this one twice. Listen: Highlight to Tweet: “Living rigidly is not the game. The game is finding elasticity.” - Steven Kronauer Show Notes: Try thinking less in terms of “blend,” and more in terms of “agreement.” For the teenage male singer, it’s important to reassure them that change is a part of life. Whatever they are working with (or through) will be fine. When dealing with limited range, you need to offer patience and guidance. Provide a model. Avoiding “compensation,” or reaching for a pitch. (“that giraffe thing” - Ryan Guth) Posture and alignment are always important, but especially so for teenage boys. Accept and love this period of life where you’re going through change! Falsetto is huge. HUGE. Sing into a straw in a cup of water, so that the sound is focused at the front of the bubbles. It helps practice constant airflow. Hum with the tongue between the lips, concentrating on the vibration of the vocal folds while letting go of tensions. “You learn to sing by singing.” Place your singers according to what will be healthy for them. Bio: DR. STEVEN KRONAUER, a highly experienced voice teacher, tenor, and conductor, is the conductor of Los Angeles Children’s Chorus’ Young Men’s Ensemble, comprised of young men with changing voices. After completing two Master’s degrees at the University of Michigan, one in Voice Performance and the other in Choral Conducting, Dr. Kronauer began his professional career in the chorus of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Germany, as its youngest member ever.  During his ten-year engagement, he had the privilege of meeting and studying with many noted singers of the highest echelon, including world famous Verdi tenor Dennis O’Neill and Wagnerian baritone Donald MacIntyre.  Dr. Kronauer was employed as a soloist with the Bavarian State Opera for television broadcasts, CD recordings, and live radio performances, appearing with Renee Fleming, Kurt Moll, and many others, in secondary tenor roles.  Dr. Kronauer performed the role of Smy in a world premiere of the German opera Peter Pan, by Willfried Hiller, directed by the world famous stage director August Everding.  This performance was recorded at the Prinz-Regenten Theatre in Munich, Germany, and distributed by Deutche Gramaphone. Dr. Kronauer has studied oratorio with the finest of the field, including Ernst Haefliger and Peter Schreier, in Germany (while being a guest observer as a conductor at the Deutche Stats Oper in Berlin, Germany). He also studied with tenor John McCollum in the United States. Since then, he established a career in Europe singing oratorio under such noted conductors as Karl Anton Richenbacher and Peter Schneider.  Additionally, Dr. Kronauer has sung as a soloist at the Cologne Philharmonic, and with the Munich Philharmonic in Germany. He has sung more than 100 performances of Carmina Burana, internationally.  Dr. Kronauer’s interest in opera conducting was enhanced upon becoming acquainted with Zubin Mehta and Wolfgang Sawalisch at the Munich Opera.  Dr. Kronauer is a soloist with many organizations since his return from Europe, including a frequent guest with the Angeles Chorale and the National Children’s Chorus, here in Los Angeles. Dr. Kronauer completed his doctorate degree at the University of California, Los Angeles in choral conducting and operatic conducting under the direction of Donald Neuen and William Vendice, respectively.  He has worked with Donald Neuen as an assistant conductor with the UCLA Chorale and with Maestro Vendice as the assistant conductor of the UCLA Opera. Previously, The University of Michigan offered Dr. Kronauer the opportunity of completing two Masters Degrees in Vocal Performance (under Lorna Haywood and John McCollum) and Choral Conducting (under Theodore Morrison).  There, he was the Assistant Conductor for Jerry Blackstone and the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club.   He has also led a choral workshop at the University of Munich.  Dr. Kronauer’s expertise focused on performance practice of American and British chorale music.  While in Munich he formed The Munich Opera Chamber Chorus, which sang some of the great chamber music of the Germanic tradition, including the complete Liebeslieder waltzes. Dr. Kronauer has taught on the voice faculty of the Interlochen Arts Camp and at the University of California, Irvine.  He also had the honor of presenting a lecture to the National Association of Teacher’s of Singing on the “Dos and Don’ts of Starting a Singing Career in Germany.” Dr. Kronauer taught for three years as a member of the voice faculty, and the music director of the opera program at California State University, Los Angeles, conducting fully staged performances of Hansel and Gretel by Humperdinck and L’incornatione di Poppea, by Monteverdi.  Dr. Kronauer was the Acting Chair of the voice department of the University of California, Santa Barbara for two years and the director of opera activities producing. Currently Dr. Kronauer has a busy private voice studio and is on the faculty of California State University, Long Beach at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music teaching voice and German diction.
