Margo is joined by Annie Atkins, a graphic designer and legendary prop maker for film and television. She is known for her work with Wes Anderson on The Grand Budapest Hotel, which won the Academy Award for Best Production Design at the 87th Academy Awards. Since then, she has worked again with Wes Anderson on Isle of Dogs and The French Dispatch as well as on Steven Speilberg's West Side Story and Bridge of Spies. Annie's first book, Fake Love Letters, Forged Telegrams, and Prison Escape Maps, was published in 2020 by Phaidon. In her first children's book, Letters From The North Pole, five children from all around the world write to Santa Claus with ideas for Christmas gifts and are amazed when he writes back! Through five letters from Santa that children can pull out and read, the hidden world of the North Pole is revealed, from how reindeer can sleep standing up to what snacks Santa would like left out on Christmas Eve, and how he gets round the world so quickly. This is a nostalgic and festive tale, reminiscent of the classic The Jolly Postman and Annie's iconic work on such films as The Grand Budapest Hotel.   Margo and Annie discuss: How Annie's upbringing in a creative household influenced her decision to pursue graphic design and the pivotal moments that led her into the film industry Her impressive portfolio working on films and specific challenges and joys she encountered while working with distinctive styles of directors Hand-lettering vs. digital design Film prop details and some of the various intricate props she crafted Learning through mistakes, how using a 50-star flag instead of a 48-star flag in Bridge of Spies taught her to ensure historical accuracy Personal Projects vs. Commissioned Work What the job of a graphic designer on a film set typically involves and how it contributes to the overall storytelling in a movie Her captivating and interactive new children's book, Letters from the North Pole   Connect with Annie: www.instagra.com/AnnieAtkins www.annieatkins.com   Connect with Margo: www.instagram.com/windowsillchats www.windowsillchats.com www.patreon.com/inthewindowsill

For this episode, I caught up with Annie Atkins. You might not have heard of her name but you will certainly have seen her work. She's the mastermind behind some of the most iconic graphics props and set pieces for multi-award-winning films. Notably and probably one that stands out the most is her work for Wes Anderson’s Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs and most recently the French dispatch. And yes the famous iconic pink patisserie box from the grand Budapest hotel is made by her! She’s also worked on the animated feature The Boxtrolls, Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, and most recently his West Side Story adaptation. And that’s just to name a few! To say I was excited to record this interview is an understatement. Annie is, as expected, fascinating! As usual, I followed her career path, from starting her design course at Ravensbourne to her challenging time as a designer in the world of advertising to her first job on the set of The Tudors and finally her time working as a fully fledge graphic designer for the film industry. We go deep into the work that makes up her extensive career to date and Annie is full of great stories – from designing the carpet in the grand Budapest hotel to making a spelling mistake on that famous French patisserie box, to constructing maps, Maps, newspapers and dog tags for Anderson’s Isle of Dogs. She is also open about the type of mindset that is required to make it in this highly stressful job. And as a woman, we talk about how things seem to be finally changing in the film industry, where the importance of flexibility at work is starting to be recognised. I could go on about how much I enjoyed this conversation but instead, I will let you hear it for yourself. Hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did recording it!

D&AD represents global creative, design and advertising communities and celebrates brilliance in commercial creativity. I recall D&AD being a big deal when I was finishing up my degree in illustration. Just this rabid buzz about the place, students stressed, excited, dejected and elated in equal measure throughout the whole awards process, like the rest of their lives depended on it. Maybe it did. Now in 2016, D&AD have launched an inaugural 3-day festival in conjunction with the awards judging process and subsequent decisions. I head down to the Old Truman Brewery in Shoreditch, East London, armed with a press pass and a microphone to make some sense of it all. Part one of the resultant two-part special is an exclusive interview with the 2015-16 and current president of D&AD, Andy Sandoz. He is also Executive Creative Director of Havas Work Club.
