Percussion Discussion Podcast - Episode 164 - Dave Mattacks. Joining me today is the wonderful Dave Mattacks. Dave is a british drummer ( now living in Boston ) with a quite remarkable career under his belt - he is known as the Folk Drummer (much to his occasional chargrin) Having played for Fairport Convention for a long time, however he has a lot more up his sleeve, check this out for a recording and live CV.......... Paul McCartney, Elton John, XTC, George Harrison, Chris Rea, Jethro Tull, The Proclaimers, Joan Armatrading, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Richard Thompson, Steeleye Span and many many more! We had the most wonderful conversation about his career including the moment he went from trying to impress, with flashy, busy drum parts to stripping it back and playing for the song, something that is now synonymous with Dave's name. Huge thanks to our mutual pal Nigel Constable for connecting us up! Many thanks of course for giving up his valuable time to do this! www.davemattacks.com

Epidode 311: When I met lifelong musician Red Young on board Delbert McClinton's Sandy Beaches Cruise, I knew I had to interview him. He's had one of those journeyman's careers that ties together all the threads of American music, from pop to R&B to jazz. He's a pianist, Hammond organ specialist, singer, arranger and producer, and at 76 years old, he's seen it all. He's worked with Kinky Friedman, Joan Armatrading, Dolly Parton, Sonny & Cher, Linda Ronstadt, Eric Burdon of the Animals, Marcia Ball, Janiva Magness, and of course Delbert McClinton himself, whom he met in his home town of Fort Worth, TX some sixty years ago. Having to think about what you're going to tell your employer about why you're not able to come to work can compound the difficulty. In the UK you are not entitled to any time off work if you experience miscarriage in the first six months of pregnancy. But today, the Women and Equalities Select Committee is hearing evidence for the case of extending your right to bereavement leave to the first 24 weeks of pregnancy. Sarah Owen MP, Chair of that Committee is in the Woman's Hour studio.Baroness Lola Young of Hornsey has spent the last 20 years as an independent crossbench peer in the House of Lords, championing social justice causes such as the fight against modern slavery and promoting ethical fashion. She was also one of the first black women to enter the Lords. In her memoir Eight Weeks, she reflects on her childhood in the care system during the 1950s and 60s and the challenges she faced moving between foster care and children's homes, and what she learnt from accessing her care records some fifty years later. After writing her Spinal Column for the Times newspaper since 2010 – the first just two weeks after breaking her neck and back in a riding accident - columnist and author Melanie Reid has decided it's time to stop and has published the final one. She joins Nuala to discuss why she has made that decision and what her plans are now.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Kirsty Starkey

83. Anna Hammond on Creating Access to Nutritional Food From Excess

Anna Hammond is the Founder and CEO of Matriark Foods, a social impact business on a mission to scale access to healthy food for the benefit of people and the environment. Each year in the USA, roughly 33 million tons of perfectly healthy vegetables never make it to the table. That's a waste of food, water, and greenhouse gasses. It's bad for farmers and the planet. Matriark Foods upcycles farm surplus and fresh-cut remnants into healthy, delicious, low sodium vegetable products for schools, hospitals, food banks and other foodservice.  All Matriark products are Upcycled Certified. Upcycled food is about doing more with less, and elevating all food to its highest and best use. Matriark is also a certified Women-Owned Business (WBE) that mentors and supports other WBEs. It's a fact that despite receiving less than 5% of venture capital,  WBEs outperform  other structures by 63%. In the words of Joan Armatrading, “If women ruled the world, it would be a good thing.” Matriark Foods is a shining example of this. In this episode, we discuss: ●      The issues with our current food system that cause so much food waste while people go hungry. ●      What Upcycled Certified means. ●      How Matriark Foods benefitted from participating in incubators and accelerators. Key Takeaways:  Forging New Paths: Imagine setting out on a journey into uncharted territory, where every step forward demands innovation and resilience. For the most interesting projects with the biggest potential to make an impact, at the start there is no “plug and play”. In order to have a plug and play you need a system to plug into. But when you're creating entirely new ways of doing things across an entire supply chain, you're doing the heavy lifting of creating an entirely new system. While the initial stages will be daunting, each stride forward lays the foundation for a future where, eventually at scale, you will have created a new system that others can plug into—and that new system you forged will enable systemic change making a bigger impact than any one person or organization could ever have on their own. This work of system reinvention takes time, it takes collaboration, and it's essential for fixing the broken systems we're currently relying on that are damaging people and the planet.  Tackling Food Loss and Waste: Food loss (on farms and in supply chains) and waste (at the retail and consumer levels) deprives farmers of income, costs consumers money, and exacerbates biodiversity loss. All while more than 700 million people go hungry worldwide including 44 million Americans (13 million of which are children). America discards more food than any other country, an estimated 30-40% of the entire food supply. Each year that equates to 46 million tons of food, 145 billion meals, and $473 billion lost dollars that were used to grow, transport and dispose of the surplus (which is roughly 2% of U.S. GDP). This wasted food not only doesn't make it to hungry people's mouths, it's also a greenhouse gas footprint equivalent to 4% of total U.S. GHG emissions. All of that of that time, energy, and money for nothing. Matriark's innovative approach to food upscaling offers a triple win: income for farmers and manufacturers, reducing carbon footprints, and enhancing nutritional well-being.  Food as a Gateway: Food is more than nourishment; it's a gateway to connection, grounding, and humanity. We talk about breaking bread with others, as a way to form bonds. And food is literally how we nurture our bodies, so they have the fuel they need to operate in the world. Food is a way to ground, since natural food literally comes from the ground. Food serves as a cornerstone of human experience that ties us all together—but too many people are still tied together by the shared experience of food insecurity. This is a global problem, that we call need to do our part to help solve.  References: ●      Connect with Anna on LinkedIn ●      Matriark Foods ●      Matriark Foods + Google Food Team case study ●      ReFED ●      Baldor Specialty Foods ●      Chex Finer Foods ●      Hudson Harvest ●      Rainforest Distribution ●      Foodbuy ●      Compass Group ●      Upcycled Food Association ●      Planet FWD Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? He also tells us about how sometimes testing pedals can be a bit too enjoyable. Synergy have made a new module, the DRECT which is based on "that" high end Californian sound and the guys then talk about some of their favorite amps and Brian gets instant GAS.  There was an early leak of a pedal and the guys skirt around it rapidly before reflecting on the sad news that Dickie Betts from the Allman brothers had passed away. Bob Mould is the founding member of Husker Du, one of the most influential guitar bands of the 80's.  Husker Du's wall-of-sound guitar approach was as influential as REM in creating alternative rock, and created an environment which allowed Nirvana, The Pixies and The Foo Fighters to succeed. In the early-90's, Sugar, Bob's next band, built on that with a thrash/melodic collection of songs, particularly on “Copper Blue”.  Since then, Bob's kept the flame alive for guitar-based rock with a solo career that is still giving us marvellous albums like 2012's “Silver Age” and 2020's “Blue Hearts”. Mick saw Mould in Sydney on his Copper Blue 20th Anniversary tour, and it still ranks as one of the best he's seen.  Our “Album you Must Hear before you Die” is Joan Armatrading's self-titled 1976 gem.  Unusually, both Mick and Jeff love this album.   In “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”, the boys salute Melanie Safka, who has passed away after a career that stretched from being one of only 3 female acts at Woodstock to duetting with Miley Cyrus (it's great!).  They also wonder why “Death by Shooting” is a major category of death for rappers!? The playlist is pretty damn good, too!! Enjoy.  Episode playlist Dead RappersBob Mould; What's In My BagMelanie Live Netherlands

After we've paid our respects to departed legends Seymour Stein and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mark talks us through his new additions to the RBP library, including pieces about the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper, Joan Armatrading, Talking Heads and Sun Ra. Jasper then wraps up the episode with his thoughts on a 2002 live review of Queens of the Stone Age and a 2015 piece exploring the influence of Spaghetti Westerns on reggae. Many thanks to special guest Andy Beckett. Pieces discussed: Andy Beckett on Dylan, on Simon Reynolds' Rip It Up, on The Face, Everything But The Girl, Peter Paul and Mary, War Between the Generations, Enoch Clapton, Red Wedge, Where are the political pop stars?, The Beat audio, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Seymour Stein, Sgt. Pepper, Joan Armatrading, Talking Heads, Sun Ra, Queens of the Stone Age and dub spaghetti. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode we welcome author and Guardian journalist Andy Beckett to RBP's Hammersmith HQ and ask him to discuss politics and pop from the late '70s to the present day. Andy talks about his first musical passions as a teenager in the early '80s, as well as about Rock Against Racism, Red Wedge and the politicised postpunk era in general. He recalls his first pieces for The Independent in the early '90s and explains how his broader interest in popular culture informs his perspective as an op-ed columnist and the author of When the Lights Went Out and Promised You a Miracle. Talk Art special episode!!! We meet leading artist NIKITA GALE! It's Frieze London and we explore an incredible new art installation for BMW Open Work by Frieze. Artist Nikita Gale worked with BMW i7 designers to present the site-specific installation “63/22” in the BMW Lounge at the fair from October 12-16, 2022.Curated by Attilia Fattori Franchini, BMW Open Work by Frieze invites an artist to develop an ambitious project utilising BMW design and technology to pursue their practice in innovative new directions. BMW Open Work offers artists the possibility of engaging in a rich dialogue with BMW engineers, designers, and experts from different fields to create unique artistic projects.Investigating the politics of sound and its surrounding, Nikita Gale's practice enquires themes of invisibility and audibility, recasting the complicated dynamic between performer and spectator. Within the work, notions are subverted and destabilized. Nikita Gale's interest in the history of sound continues with “63/22”, in which the artist reflects on the relationship between automotive and sound technologies, already closely associated since the 1960s. In fact, the Gibson Firebird, one of the most popular electric guitars, was designed by a car designer in 1963. Emerging from an intense dialogue with BMW i7 designers and engineers whilst reinforcing BMW's commitment to art and music, Gale presents for Frieze London 2022 a sculptural installation comprising of five customised electric guitars. The guitars will be named historically significant and iconic Black women guitarists: Memphis Minnie, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Barbara Lynn, Big Mama Thornton, and Joan Armatrading. Activated in the lounge through a series of live acts performed by musicians invited by Gale, the guitars will play through the BMW i7, transforming the car into a sound amp, amplifying the relationship between the car, sound technologies and creativity. The guitars have been created in collaboration with BMW i7 designers and realised by a UK-based luthier, Ian Malone. View more: https://frieze.com/bmw-open-workGale's work employs objects and materials like barricades, concrete, microphone stands, and spotlights to address the ways in which space and sound are politicized. Gale's broad-ranging installations blur formal and disciplinary boundaries, engaging with concerns of mediation and automation in contemporary performance. Follow: @NikitaGale on Instagram. Gale is represented by Commonwealth & Council (LA), Reyes | Finn (Detroit), and 56 Henry (NYC).Follow @BMWGroupCulture to learn more about BMW's commitment to art, more than 50 years supporting artists and culture.
