Elf on a Shelf: Part 1 Her stalker wasn't who she thought he was; Based on a post by LingeringAfterthought, in 3 parts. Listen to the Podcast at Steamy Stories. Honey smiled at the long line of children waiting to see Santa, flipping her phone from Google Translate back to see the information of the next little girl in line, who was looking up at her somberly with large liquid brown eyes. In her small face was a familiar mixture of fear and hope. Wonder; it was wonder in her eyes, Honey thought. Unlike the tired and jaded adults, dutifully shifting their weight from foot to foot, holding overstuffed shopping bags and all the coats of their kids as they distracted themselves on their phones, the children got more and more excited as they drew near the man in the furry red suit with white trim. Honey loved working with the children; because like them, she sometimes could still see the magic. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Norman shift uncomfortably in the painted plywood throne made for him to sit with the children and discuss their good behavior and of the wishes that they hoped would come true. Even at age 62, Norman still saw the magic with his merry bright blue eyes, but it faded when his prostate pained him. When the photographer got the shot the parent wanted, Honey walked to where most of the long line could see her as Norman flashed her a look of worshipful gratitude. The adults' faces immediately fell, knowing what was coming. "I'm afraid Santa needs to take a quick break because apparently the reindeer have begun arguing again!" Norman put his gloved hands up to his real beard, pulled a comically dismayed face, jumped up from his throne, and ran off toward the restrooms. Honey shook her head mournfully and continued, "The reindeer were all practicing their Christmas carols when Comet and Cupid couldn't decide how many times Santa checks his list in Santa Claus is Coming to Town! Does anyone here remember how it goes?" she asked, scanning the line for people game enough to help. Honey scampered back and forth along the line trying to choose among the eager volunteers, her white-trimmed, pink fur skirt flaring out around her thighs, her long legs clad in sparkly curly-toed ruby slippers and candy cane swirl stockings catching the eyes of several fathers. Suddenly, she gasped listening carefully to her headset, "Nina?" she called out. "Comet and Cupid say they will only stop arguing if 'Nina' gives the answer. Is there a 'Nina' here today? Nina?" Honey looked around at the crowd carefully until the little girl with the big brown eyes, who had been quietly waiting 57 minutes in line, gathered the courage to raise her hand. "Oh! Are you Nina?" she asked, running over and crouching down near the girl. "We just adopted her; she only speaks Portuguese," the weary woman holding her hand said quietly. Honey gasped and smiled widely, "Voc fala portugu s Nina? Maravilhosa!" she said, watching the little girl's eyes brighten excitedly. "Voc pode me dizer quantas vezes o Papai Noel verifica sua lista?" she asked, holding her microphone out to the little girl. "Duas vezes!" Nina said confidently into the mic. Honey listened carefully to her headset, concentrating, "'Duas vezes' it is! They've stopped arguing!" she announced. "But now, they want us all to sing the song in Portuguese! Nina, voc vai me ajudar a ensin -los a m sica?" she asked. Nina nodded and slowly she and Honey taught the familiar song to the crowd in a new language. As always, a hush came on the crowd when Honey began to sing. Heads raised up from forgotten phones. Vague smiles drifted onto the turning heads of passers-by in the mall as they paused in their frenetic search for gifts. It wasn't so much that Honey's voice was beautiful, though it certainly was. It was more that when Honey sang, it seemed to make the things that didn't really matter melt away. To those that believed in such things, Honey's voice was magic. When she sang, people held their breath and didn't even miss the air. Honey closed her eyes as she sang next to Nina. It was a newly acquired habit. Though she had been taught to let her eyes slowly drift over the audience, letting them make a connection with each person as she sang, she didn't do that anymore. She knew he was out there. She felt his presence frequently as she worked, but it was only when she sang that he came out into the open. She couldn't hold her voice steady when she saw him watching her, so she closed her eyes and let the magic continue for the crowd. When the song ended, Honey opened her eyes as the crowd cheered, finding his powerful form immediately as if she had been commanded to look at him. Zach. He had changed a lot in the year since he brought his sister's children through the long Santa line, drawing her almost too-large dark blue eyes to him then, as easily as he did now. After bringing his nieces and nephews through the line, he'd gone home and brought all his neighbors' kids to see Santa in five more trips, watching her the entire time. He looked at her as if he'd never seen anything like her in the world, like he couldn't believe she was real. She had loved feeling his eyes on her then, hearing his voice. She had wanted to climb up in his lap, feel his large arms curled around her, whisper to him about how good she had been that year, and of how much she hoped he would make her wishes come true. Of course, all that was before he'd told her he wanted to kill her. Zach's face looked leaner now, though his body seemed even larger, if such a thing was possible. His brooding, deep-set eyes were not merry, as they had been when children climbed his tree-like body in her line last year. They weren't nervously soft and adoring of every part of her, as they had been at their candle-lit dinner. His eyes weren't rageful or insane as you might expect from someone visiting their object of murderous hate, but rather; they were tortured, trapped. Pain and quiet desperation had taken up restless residence in the windows to his soul. Honey knew she shouldn't look at him so much, but she just wished she could understand what she had done wrong. Once the line of children and parents had cleared, it was long past the official closing time. Honey cleaned up the display and prepared it for the next day while Norman took one last lingering trip to the restroom. Her phone showed numerous messages from work friends from her other job asking where she was. The firm had planned a Christmas party at Gatsby's, a gorgeous club worthy of F. Scott Fitzgerald's glamorous hero. It was also the place where Zach had taken her on their first and last date. The Gatsby's waiter had looked stunned and confused when she shakily ordered herself an "angel shot," the code-phrase used to quietly ask bartenders or wait staff for help when you felt threatened, but after his initial shock, the waiter immediately escorted her secretly to a taxi waiting outside before Zach returned to the table. Gatsby's had saved her life; but she didn't want to go back there. After avoiding call after call from Zach, she finally answered and politely asked him never to call her again. To her surprise, he didn't. He never spoke to her again. Unless she sang, she never even saw him, but she felt his presence almost everywhere. It felt like she was haunted by him; haunted by something wonderful and magical that, inexplicably, went horribly wrong. Her phone buzzed again, the display showing that the firm's senior partner wanted to FaceTime her. Steeling herself, she answered. "Honey Lane where in the hell; oh my god lookit you!" Aaron Timberman held the phone high above his head with his long ex-basketball-player arms and Honey saw a crowd of her co-workers crowd into the picture behind him. "Um, hi sir. Sorry I'm late to;" "You're an elf!" "Um, yeah. It's a volunteer thing;" "Wait, wait, wait; you have the shoes? You know, with the; toes?" he slurred, motioning his finger in a spiral motion. Honey bit her lips and tilted the camera down her body, showing her entire costume, tilting her foot to show off the curled toe. "I'm sorry it got late tonight, but I'll be there as soon as I can get home and get changed;" Timberman looked around at the crowd surrounding him, "Guys, do we wanna see Honey Lane here at the party in some boring old Anne Klein shit, or do we want the elf?" he yelled, pointing at the screen. Behind him, almost a dozen of her co-workers began chanting "Elf, Elf, Elf, Elf!" "Get yer ass over here, Elf," Timberman ordered, poking at his screen several times before effectively ending the call. A few minutes later, Norman finally came back from the restroom and gave Honey a ride over to Gatsby's in his red SUV bedecked with a bumper sticker that read, "My other car's a SLEIGH!" Honey hopped out after getting bits of advice from Norman that would have been appropriate several decades ago. With flaming cheeks, she brushed the furry white pompom from her hat out of her face and told the smirking ma tre d which party she wanted, sighing when he grinned widely and escorted her through the middle of the main dining area, much to her horror. When the doors to the party room opened and she was greeted by another round of "Elf, Elf, Elf, Elf," she didn't feel much better. She was starving, so she headed over to the buffet and began loading up a plate with delicious-looking things on ice in shot glasses, impaled on sticks, or immersed in flames. She just spied a quiet table in a dark corner and was winding her way toward it to it to scarf down her only food since breakfast before she could be drawn into a drunken debate. That was the plan, anyway. "Hunnybaby! Lookit you! C'mon we gotta dance!" Lee James slurred to her fur-trimmed tits. With a sigh, she smiled and laid her plate down on a nearby table, promising to herself that she would eat right after enduring a dance with the favored junior partner. Unfortunately, after Lee angled her awkwardly around the dance floor, they'd drawn so much attention that everyone wanted to get pics of themselves toasting and dancing with the Christmas elf. At some point, she found herself in Timberman's arms with a glass of champagne in her hand. "Um; what?" she said, almost asking herself how she had gotten there. "I said you look lovely, tonight, Honey. Much better than in a shawl and sheath dress," he said, quickly twirling her around as they reached the edge of the dance floor. "Twirling makes my skirt go up; I'm dizzy," she murmured. A familiar dark figure flashed in the background and disappeared as Timberman turned her again. She looked around, trying to find the figure again, but she couldn't see him anywhere. Why was he there? Had she been singing again? "Well, I'll make sure nobody twirls you, my dear," he said, twirling her and smiling as her skirt flew up her long candy-cane striped legs. "The wives wouldn't like it." "I like your wife's dress Mr. Timberman; looks warm. It covers her ass when she sits, too," she slurred, frowning in confusion at the dark red drink in her hand now. Zach was frowning, and then he just looked blurry again as she swirled around. Maybe swirling made it harder for him to kill her. Why did he want to kill her? It just wasn't fair. Timberman leaned down and dipped her, "I'll make sure to give her your compliments. You know, if you like what wives wear, you should consider getting married. Lee is quite taken with you, you know," he said, stroking his hand against the soft pink velvet of her dress. Honey found herself drifting away and wandering inside her head again, thinking about Lee; he was handsome in an overly-polished way, said funny things, but they always sounded a little mean, like he wanted to be the only one laughing; and he also took her away from the food plate that just floated by on a table. It was still full. She should have eaten that food. What time was it? "He likes my boobs; and he doesn't want to kill me," she agreed eventually, surprised to find that Timberman was gone and she was dancing with Lee James again. "Well, I can't blame him for that; they're fucking perfect; just like everything else. I'm gonna come on them after you suck me off; he murmured, pulling her closer against him. "Let me take you home, Honey; penthouse view of the city; "Umm; no, that's not home; I live in the; railroad place; with the trains?" Honey explained, pointing in what she thought was the direction of the Lowertown Commons. Why did every guy think she lived with them tonight? "Sounds charming, Eliza Doolittle; you should trade up. You don't know how much I'd love twist your arms back and fuck this ass wide open over my balcony tonight," he said, reaching his hand under her skirt and greedily squeezing her bottom. "You'd like that, wouldn't you Honey? I can tell; Lee whispered, his cologne invading her head and making her queasy. "I feel sick; Honey whimpered and staggered away, trying to find the quiet table where the food was that would make her less drunk. The dance floor was confusing, though, always turning around and thumping and flashing. She leaned against a pillar until she got a better sense of where she was. She liked the pillar. It was big and strong; and it stroked her hair. "Honey; wake up, Honey. Open your mouth. You need to take these," the vaguely familiar voice said, cutting through the sleep that had been blocking out some of the pain she felt everywhere. She obediently opened her mouth and the hand put two caplets on her tongue. A water bottle squirted a little cool liquid into her mouth until she moaned and sucked harder, desperate for more. "Not too much. Wait until you can hold that down. I'll give you more in a bit. You don't want that IV back, do you?" "Nuh" Honey groaned. She hated needles. Sure, just about every part of her body hurt more than a needle did, right now, but somehow needle pain felt personal. Like with Zach. He didn't seem like someone who went around wanting to choke everybody; just her. She was nobody special; just a simple girl who kept lawyers organized and tried to be nice. Then, someone wonderful like Zach thought she needed to die. That hurt. Something about her made him go from being tender and intensely loving to someone who; it just didn't make sense. What did she do? Mercifully, sleep faded the pain and clouded her thoughts. Voices below her intruded into a wonderful dream where she was bouncing on clouds. Though not in the same room, the voices seemed strangely clear. "I can't; Terry, she cries when I do that," the pills voice said, making her eyes fly open. She knew that voice. She hadn't heard it for a year, but she would never forget it. Her body reacted with a confused mix of emotions, her cheeks flushing and adrenaline searing a path all through her at the same time. "That's because it hurts her. You know what hurts more? Bedsores. Man up. Use the pillows to prop her weight against the parts that aren't hurt on whichever side. It's either this, or she goes back to the hospital, and I have it on good authority you won't be allowed to visit after what happened." "She was screaming; Zach gritted. "Yeah, well they were putting her shoulder back in. People scream. That still doesn't excuse what you did. Since when did you become such a pussy about pain?" Terry asked. "since her." "oh my god." "Shut up," Zach grunted. "Oh my god; "Yeah, that's not shutting up." "The great Z-dog has been taken down;" "Shut up, maggot, it's not like that. I'm just taking care of h;" "By a little bitty pink Christmas elf; Terry laughed. There was a scuffling sound and then a loud whoomp and a forceful exhalation of air. "So, I turn her every few hours until she can do it for herself?" Zach asked, casually. "Yes, sir," Terry choked. "Anything else?" "Clear liquids until she can hold stuff down. Talk to her. Ask her questions. If she seems disoriented or part of her face goes slack, she goes back to the hospital. Don't fuck around." "Got it. Are you squared away, or do we need to discuss this further?" "Squared away, sir," Terry choked, then gasped in relief, panting faintly. "Jesus Christ, you haven't lost your touch. We on for the hump tomorrow at 0 500?" "No. I'm gonna stick close here until she's;" "Got it. Hey, maybe they have those Baby Bjorn things in elf-size. Then, you could just strap her onto your ba; ow! ow! ow, ow, ow!" "You weren't particularly attached to the rest of that sentence, were you, maggot?" Zach growled. "Sir, no sir; Terry squeaked. "I didn't think so. You'll be back here Wednesday," Zach stated, more as an order than a question. "Yeah, if you want me to. Honestly, right now she just needs rest and TLC more than a medic. That stands for 'tender loving care' by the way, not;" "You were just going," Zach said, as the voices moved to another end of the room below her. "Hey, you wanna know what makes an elf's toes curl up like tha;" Terry asked, his question cut off by the slamming of the door. Honey listened, trembling and terrified as Zach paced the floor below her. Though his voice hadn't changed, he sounded nothing like the man that had wooed her so tenderly a year ago. He sounded dangerous, brutal even. He definitely sounded like the kind of person that went around wanting to choke everyone, she thought, strangely relieved that her heartbreak felt a little less personal. How could she have been so wrong in her impression of him? She looked around the room, understanding now how the voices had reached her so easily. She was in an open industrial loft bedroom that opened onto the main floor below. Looking around, she realized she must be in Zach's huge bed, though if the crisply made side next to her was any indication, he hadn't been sleeping in it with her. Looking down her body, she gasped quietly. Her left arm was in a sling strapped to her chest, her legs were covered in bruises, and the right leg that was being stabbed with an invisible knife right now, was wrapped up in an air cast boot. What had happened to her? The last thing she remembered was feeling sick as she tried to get away from Lee's groping hands on the dance floor. After that; nothing. How did she get here? A beeping noise sounded below and Zach walked across the room to what sounded like a kitchen. The sound of water being poured into a cup, the ringing of a spoon stirring it, a pill bottle being opened. Honey shivered, realizing he was probably coming up to her, soon. She closed her eyes and tried to slow her breathing, feigning sleep. Steps ascending to the loft bedroom. Ankle stabbing, stab, stab, stab, stab with every panicked heartbeat. A tray went down on the nightstand next to her. A chair across the room was lifted and set down by the bed. Honey told herself to breathe slowly, willing the tears welling behind her lids not to leak out of her eyes. He would leave her alone if she was sleeping, wouldn't he? "You're not sleeping," Zach's voice stated, quietly, and her stomach clenched in fear. "You've been waking up for these pills every four hours like a junkie. I know you don't want to talk to me, Honey, but until you're squared away, you're gonna have to. So, cut the crap, open your eyes, and let's get this done." Honey opened her eyes to see his grim face looking down at her. With one blink, large tears rolled down her pale cheeks, and Zach's jaw set angrily. Sitting down in the chair, he put his elbows on his knees and leaned his massive shoulders forward, looking at her. His hands looked like they could crush rocks as he gripped them together. "Let's get some things straight. I don't know what you think you know about me, but acting like I'm some kind of psycho is pretty shitty. You want nothing of me, that's fine, but you're hurt because you screamed and flung yourself down some stairs rather than let me help you to an Uber. You're staying here until you're well, because some shithead at that party gave you enough roofies to be in a coma for almost 3 days and I'm not dragging my ass to that rat trap of yours in the Commons every day to make sure they don't come back while you're weak. Are we clear?" he asked. Honey swallowed and nodded, wincing at the pain in her neck and head. That just seemed to make Zach angrier. "While you are here, you will do as you're told. You will eat what you get, and you will not complain. You see these, here?" he said, holding up the magic caplets that made everything better. "These are the last ones you're getting. I'm switching you to ibuprofen and Tylenol because, unchecked, this Sackler shit will fuck you up for good and that's not happening on my watch. Do you understand?" he asked. "Yes," Honey whispered. At the sound of her voice, Zach's mouth twitched, but at least he didn't look as angry as when she'd nodded and winced. "You will follow your doctor's orders to the last goddamn word. You will rest. You will do your therapy. You will let me help you and you will ask me for what you need because I am not a fucking mind reader. And so help me, if you do anything stupid like get out of that bed without me here to help you, or push yourself away from me like you did at Gatsby's, or any other drama shit that hurts even one hair on that head again, I will personally make you regret you were ever born." "Yes, Zach," Honey breathed, confused. Two more tears rolled down her cheeks. Without thinking, she leaned over to wipe them off on her shoulder and cried out in pain. Zach squeezed his clenched hands together and several of his knuckles cracked. "You don't use my name. You don't get to use my name. You're not getting under my skin again, you hear me?" Zach growled, using his rough knuckle to wipe her tears. "Orders a fucking angel shot in my own fucking club; fuck you. I don't have a name, you don't have a name. You're nothing to me. Understand?" "Yes, sir," she whispered. Honey leaned forward and took the last spoonful of broth into her mouth and swallowed, looking longingly at the noodles at the bottom of the cup. Zach caught a drop of broth at the bottom of her lower lip with the spoon and returned it to her mouth. "No," he said, seeing where her eyes lingered. "I can do it," she pleaded. "Please; I haven't had anything solid since; how long has it been?" "I said, no. You throw up on another pair of my skivvies and I'll be doing laundry twice a week," Zach said, dabbing her mouth with a paper towel. "Why do I have to wear your boxer briefs anyway? They feel weird. They have this hole-flap thing; and there are some places that aren't supposed to feel a breeze," Honey said, lifting the blanket to look down at his underwear loosely covering her hips. "Are you complaining?" he asked quietly. Honey's eyes darted quickly to his face, "No sir," she murmured, looking down at her lap. "I just thought if I had some of my things here, you wouldn't have to do the laundry so much." "I'll worry about what I have to do, Honey," he said, unthinkingly using her name. Startled, she looked up to see his eyes wandering over her, his massive t-shirt sleeves going down past her elbows. She felt ridiculous and disheveled, but something about the way he looked at her made her hold her breath. Then, without another word, he slurped the noodles out of the cup and took the tray downstairs. After that, the two settled into a quiet routine of him feeding her, giving her medicine, and watching her sleep most of the day. She would sometimes awaken to the soft repetitive sounds of him running on a treadmill, or the clinking of him lifting weights downstairs where she couldn't see him. Then, he would go to the bathroom and shower. After his shower, he came upstairs again in his towel and took some clothes from his dresser before going back downstairs to change. Honey found herself looking forward to those few seconds each day, watching his droplet-covered torso twist as he leaned over his dresser. He frowned as he flipped through his carefully folded underwear. "You wearing the grey ones?" he asked, not looking at her. Honey peeked under the covers, "Um, yes sir," she replied. "I'm supposed to wear the grey ones today," he grumbled to himself. Honey didn't say anything. Zach was the one who picked out which underwear she wore today. He was the one who looked away while he painstakingly slipped the old ones off her hips and pulled the new ones over her boot and up her legs until her bottom was covered again. There was nothing about her life that wasn't chosen and executed by him. If he wasn't happy about the color of his underwear, that was his fault. Still, Zach kept rummaging around in his underwear drawer as if another crisply folded grey pair would somehow magically appear. Finally, rather than offend him by laughing, Honey spoke, "Um; you know, if they're clean, I could wear the pair I had on when I went to the hospital and you could have these. It would get you back on schedule; Zach lifted his head from the drawer and glared at her, as if he thought she was making fun of him. Honey held carefully still and shrugged her uninjured limb. She wasn't making fun, she just wanted to help. The movement caused the huge neckline to gape over to the side, revealing her bare shoulder. She waited as Zach stared impassively at her, the vein at his neck throbbing. After a long moment, he walked over and stood next to her, the tuck of his towel right next to her face. With every breath, she inhaled the scent of his wet body and the bar soap he used. A rivulet of water painstakingly slid from his chest and down his abdomen, until finally disappearing into the tightly twisted white cotton. Honey glanced up to see that he had been reading her face as she watched the droplet's progress. With a shaking breath, she blushed and pulled the covers higher with her good arm. With a twist of his mouth, Zach pulled the neckline back over her shoulder again and quickly left the room. That night, after leaving her with a video baby monitor watching her on the nightstand, Zach returned with a bag of her underwear and some of her nightgowns. After watching her excitedly sort through them, Zach pushed them aside and sat on the edge of the bed. "There were a bunch of boxes with tags on them in your living room. What's that about?" he asked. Honey's eyes dropped, "Oh; that's the charity gift thing for kids. You sign up and get them something they wished for and wrap it up so they can have something under the tree, when they wouldn't have something otherwise. It's nice, you know? I signed up for a bunch and I was supposed to wrap them and get them back to the law firm, but I guess; sorry kids," she trailed off. Looking furious, yet carefully impassive at the same time, Zach cursed under his breath and left again, returning with the packages and a huge stack of unused Styrofoam clamshells from Gatsby's, and dumped them on the bed next to her. For the next few hours, they "wrapped" the presents, Zach carefully fitting items into an appropriate-sized takeout box, and Honey trying to make them pretty with ribbons. As she watched him work, occasionally cursing under his breath, she found herself smiling at his frowning face when he was strategizing how to fit a basketball into three disassembled clamshells. "What are you laughing at?" he said, glaring when he caught her at it. "I wasn't laughing. I was smiling." "Why were you smiling, then?" he asked. "I guess; I just like you; sir," she said, glancing over at him. Honey saw a hopeful softness steal into Zach's eyes until he forcibly wrestled it down and a look of hooded sarcasm shaded them. "Yeah, well; fool me once," he sneered. Angry, Honey closed her eyes, blocking him out the only way she could. "You know, that's; that's not fair. Not after what you said; you scared me!" she said, frustrated that, once again, tears were rolling down her cheeks. Zach choked out a mirthless laugh, "I scared you? What did I say, Honey? What did I fucking say? God! I was on eggshells all night trying not to fuck it up with you and then you just; why? Those creeps you were dancing with at that party, those fucking 'nice guys' that drugged you, they were saying shit that made my skin crawl! I didn't even kiss you! I couldn't! I could barely breathe just for looking at you on our date; you looked just like a fucking angel. What did I say, Honey? What did I say?" Honey reached over and grabbed her phone, flipping through her photo album to a screenshot taken shortly before she blocked his number. "You didn't say it; you texted it. I remember watching you leave for the restroom thinking I'd met the love of my life and then you sent me this; she said, handing her phone to him. Zach took the phone, his face going from an angry red to pale horror in a matter of seconds. "This; this; he gasped, "I didn't; send this; to you; he said, shaking his head. "Whoever had your phone did, sir!" she said, emphasizing the last word, making him wince. "I spent the last year thinking you wanted to do that to me; to kill me. Every time I felt you watching me, every crowd I saw you show up in, every dark room I had to go into, that's what I thought about. I thought that a man I was head over heels about; that I could be so wrong about him. So, excuse me for thinking I liked you, sir. I promise it won't ever happen again!" Honey cried herself to sleep that night, refusing to speak to, or even look at Zach again. When she awoke, the bedroom was empty, and a glass of water and a pain pill were waiting on the nightstand. After swallowing the pill, she stared at the ceiling, furious. She didn't want to be there anymore, to be helpless and dependent on him, to obey all his stupid rules. He didn't deserve to take care of her. So, she tightened the straps on her boot and increased the air pressure to hold her broken ankle tightly enough to walk without her crutches. Then, she took off Zach's t-shirt, pulled on her elf dress, and called herself an Uber. It was when she saw the anticipated arrival time of 8 minutes that she realized her mistake. There was no way for her to get down from the loft and out of the apartment quietly in that amount of time. If she used the crutches, she would be able to descend the stairs quickly enough, but they made such a distinctive clicking racket that they would surely wake up her gorilla-like guard. If she hopped down the stairs on her good foot, it might have worked, but her good arm was on the opposite side and she kept losing her balance. Eventually she decided on the most painful course, of going down on her good and bad legs, using her good arm for support. Her boot thunked horribly the first few times, until she got the hang of it and could place it more quietly on the next step and then hop her good foot down to support it before the scream inside her could escape her lips. By the time she reached the bottom, though, she was shaking with pain and exhausted. Curiosity forced her to look around the rest of the apartment as she caught her breath, sitting on the bottom step. It was clean and unmistakably masculine. Exercise equipment took up a lot of the space not already claimed by a leather couch and TV arrangement. Zach lay on the couch, made up with sheets to act as a bed, his feet sticking out over the arm, his hand tucked under the back of his head, his chest rising and falling under the rumpled sheet. If she wasn't so angry, she'd find him handsome; or maybe he still was handsome, she thought grudgingly, closing her eyes miserably and looking away. Why couldn't he be ugly? Life wasn't fair. Uber. Right. Screwing up her courage for what was ahead, she stood and slowly hobbled across the hardwood floor, agonizing over every painful thump and noisy squeak until she finally reached the door. She unlocked the five locks on his large door, each of them being well-oiled and working perfectly. She expected no less of her anal-retentive, grey-skivvies-on-Tuesdays captor. Finally, she tugged open the heavy door to find endless flights of icy steel-mesh stairs leading all the way down to the street where her Uber was waiting. "Oh, you gotta be kidding me; she cried, breaking down into tears. A strong arm slid down around her waist and mercifully shifted her weight off her throbbing foot, "I know. It sucks. You should try it with a rucksack full of bricks," Zach said, leaning his head down and breathing into her hair. "I want to go home," she whispered. "Let me take care of you; please," Zach murmured into the top of her head, "I; it was my fault this happened to you. I scared you, I know that now; but, please believe me that I would never want to hurt or frighten you like that." "It wasn't just that text," she said, pulling her head away and looking up at him angrily. "All year, I never had a moment's peace. Even when I couldn't see you, I could feel you waiting in the quiet or dark places. Even if you weren't there;" "I was there," he confessed. "I was always there. I didn't understand what had gone wrong. You didn't want to talk to me, and the world just didn't make sense to me unless I knew where you were, what you were doing; unless I knew you were safe." "Maybe you knew I was safe, but I didn't! I thought I'd done something; that somehow I deserved to have this beautiful, scary monster hunting me. I couldn't stop thinking about what I'd done to destroy something that was so; wonderful." "You didn't do anything, Honey. Nothing at all. You were perfect. You were so perfect that I couldn't keep; you didn't do anything wrong. I never meant to send you that message; please, please believe me." "Why did you send it?" she asked, finally looking up into his eyes. The dark blue liquid pools of her eyes turned violet in the moonlight, and Zach felt a tightening in his chest. "I; I can't tell you that; but it was never meant for you." "You mean, you meant to send that message to someone else? To hurt them like that?" "Honey, I; Zach said, looking around, unable to meet her eyes, "Please, I can't; you wouldn't understand; my life isn't like that anymore." "I want to go home, Zach; please," she whispered. Zach closed his eyes for a long moment before he swallowed and nodded, looking like he was in more pain than she was. "I'll take you home tomorrow, okay? Or Terry will, if you don't want me to. He'll check the place out, make sure you're set up and safe there. You're tired, you're hurting, and your Uber's gone, now. Let me take you back upstairs and you can go in the morning. Please." At that moment, a throb of pain shot through her entire leg, and as angry as Honey was, she knew she couldn't face her empty apartment without a few more hours of rest. "Okay," she whispered. Honey smiled at the long line of children waiting to see Santa, flipping her phone from Google Translate back to see the information of the next little girl in line, who was looking up at her somberly with large liquid brown eyes. In her small face was a familiar mixture of fear and hope. Wonder; it was wonder in her eyes, Honey thought. Unlike the tired and jaded adults, dutifully shifting their weight from foot to foot, holding overstuffed shopping bags and all the coats of their kids as they distracted themselves on their phones, the children got more and more excited as they drew near the man in the furry red suit with white trim. Honey loved working with the children; because like them, she sometimes could still see the magic. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Norman shift uncomfortably in the painted plywood throne made for him to sit with the children and discuss their good behavior and of the wishes that they hoped would come true. Even at age 62, Norman still saw the magic with his merry bright blue eyes, but it faded when his prostate pained him. When the photographer got the shot the parent wanted, Honey walked to where most of the long line could see her as Norman flashed her a look of worshipful gratitude. The adults' faces immediately fell, knowing what was coming. "I'm afraid Santa needs to take a quick break because apparently the reindeer have begun arguing again!" Norman put his gloved hands up to his real beard, pulled a comically dismayed face, jumped up from his throne, and ran off toward the restrooms. Honey shook her head mournfully and continued, "The reindeer were all practicing their Christmas carols when Comet and Cupid couldn't decide how many times Santa checks his list in Santa Claus is Coming to Town! Does anyone here remember how it goes?" she asked, scanning the line for people game enough to help. Honey scampered back and forth along the line trying to choose among the eager volunteers, her white-trimmed, pink fur skirt flaring out around her thighs, her long legs clad in sparkly curly-toed ruby slippers and candy cane swirl stockings catching the eyes of several fathers. Suddenly, she gasped listening carefully to her headset, "Nina?" she called out. "Comet and Cupid say they will only stop arguing if 'Nina' gives the answer. Is there a 'Nina' here today? Nina?" Honey looked around at the crowd carefully until the little girl with the big brown eyes, who had been quietly waiting 57 minutes in line, gathered the courage to raise her hand. "Oh! Are you Nina?" she asked, running over and crouching down near the girl. "We just adopted her; she only speaks Portuguese," the weary woman holding her hand said quietly. Honey gasped and smiled widely, "Voc fala portugu s Nina? Maravilhosa!" she said, watching the little girl's eyes brighten excitedly. "Voc pode me dizer quantas vezes o Papai Noel verifica sua lista?" she asked, holding her microphone out to the little girl. "Duas vezes!" Nina said confidently into the mic. Honey listened carefully to her headset, concentrating, "'Duas vezes' it is! They've stopped arguing!" she announced. "But now, they want us all to sing the song in Portuguese! Nina, voc vai me ajudar a ensin -los a m sica?" she asked. Nina nodded and slowly she and Honey taught the familiar song to the crowd in a new language. As always, a hush came on the crowd when Honey began to sing. Heads raised up from forgotten phones. Vague smiles drifted onto the turning heads of passers-by in the mall as they paused in their frenetic search for gifts. It wasn't so much that Honey's voice was beautiful, though it certainly was. It was more that when Honey sang, it seemed to make the things that didn't really matter melt away. To those that believed in such things, Honey's voice was magic. When she sang, people held their breath and didn't even miss the air. Honey closed her eyes as she sang next to Nina. It was a newly acquired habit. Though she had been taught to let her eyes slowly drift over the audience, letting them make a connection with each person as she sang, she didn't do that anymore. She knew he was out there. She felt his presence frequently as she worked, but it was only when she sang that he came out into the open. She couldn't hold her voice steady when she saw him watching her, so she closed her eyes and let the magic continue for the crowd. When the song ended, Honey opened her eyes as the crowd cheered, finding his powerful form immediately as if she had been commanded to look at him. Zach. He had changed a lot in the year since he brought his sister's children through the long Santa line, drawing her almost too-large dark blue eyes to him then, as easily as he did now. After bringing his nieces and nephews through the line, he'd gone home and brought all his neighbors' kids to see Santa in five more trips, watching her the entire time. He looked at her as if he'd never seen anything like her in the world, like he couldn't believe she was real. She had loved feeling his eyes on her then, hearing his voice. She had wanted to climb up in his lap, feel his large arms curled around her, whisper to him about how good she had been that year, and of how much she hoped he would make her wishes come true. Of course, all that was before he'd told her he wanted to kill her. Zach's face looked leaner now, though his body seemed even larger, if such a thing was possible. His brooding, deep-set eyes were not merry, as they had been when children climbed his tree-like body in her line last year. They weren't nervously soft and adoring of every part of her, as they had been at their candle-lit dinner. His eyes weren't rageful or insane as you might expect from someone visiting their object of murderous hate, but rather; they were tortured, trapped. Pain and quiet desperation had taken up restless residence in the windows to his soul. Honey knew she shouldn't look at him so much, but she just wished she could understand what she had done wrong. Once the line of children and parents had cleared, it was long past the official closing time. Honey cleaned up the display and prepared it for the next day while Norman took one last lingering trip to the restroom. Her phone showed numerous messages from work friends from her other job asking where she was. The firm had planned a Christmas party at Gatsby's, a gorgeous club worthy of F. Scott Fitzgerald's glamorous hero. It was also the place where Zach had taken her on their first and last date. The Gatsby's waiter had looked stunned and confused when she shakily ordered herself an "angel shot," the code-phrase used to quietly ask bartenders or wait staff for help when you felt threatened, but after his initial shock, the waiter immediately escorted her secretly to a taxi waiting outside before Zach returned to the table. Gatsby's had saved her life; but she didn't want to go back there. After avoiding call after call from Zach, she finally answered and politely asked him never to call her again. To her surprise, he didn't. He never spoke to her again. Unless she sang, she never even saw him, but she felt his presence almost everywhere. It felt like she was haunted by him; haunted by something wonderful and magical that, inexplicably, went horribly wrong. Her phone buzzed again, the display showing that the firm's senior partner wanted to FaceTime her. Steeling herself, she answered. "Honey Lane where in the hell; oh my god lookit you!" Aaron Timberman held the phone high above his head with his long ex-basketball-player arms and Honey saw a crowd of her co-workers crowd into the picture behind him. "Um, hi sir. Sorry I'm late to;" "You're an elf!" "Um, yeah. It's a volunteer thing;" "Wait, wait, wait; you have the shoes? You know, with the; toes?" he slurred, motioning his finger in a spiral motion. Honey bit her lips and tilted the camera down her body, showing her entire costume, tilting her foot to show off the curled toe. "I'm sorry it got late tonight, but I'll be there as soon as I can get home and get changed;" Timberman looked around at the crowd surrounding him, "Guys, do we wanna see Honey Lane here at the party in some boring old Anne Klein shit, or do we want the elf?" he yelled, pointing at the screen. Behind him, almost a dozen of her co-workers began chanting "Elf, Elf, Elf, Elf!" "Get yer ass over here, Elf," Timberman ordered, poking at his screen several times before effectively ending the call. A few minutes later, Norman finally came back from the restroom and gave Honey a ride over to Gatsby's in his red SUV bedecked with a bumper sticker that read, "My other car's a SLEIGH!" Honey hopped out after getting bits of advice from Norman that would have been appropriate several decades ago. With flaming cheeks, she brushed the furry white pompom from her hat out of her face and told the smirking ma tre d which party she wanted, sighing when he grinned widely and escorted her through the middle of the main dining area, much to her horror. When the doors to the party room opened and she was greeted by another round of "Elf, Elf, Elf, Elf," she didn't feel much better. She was starving, so she headed over to the buffet and began loading up a plate with delicious-looking things on ice in shot glasses, impaled on sticks, or immersed in flames. She just spied a quiet table in a dark corner and was winding her way toward it to it to scarf down her only food since breakfast before she could be drawn into a drunken debate. That was the plan, anyway. "Hunnybaby! Lookit you! C'mon we gotta dance!" Lee James slurred to her fur-trimmed tits. With a sigh, she smiled and laid her plate down on a nearby table, promising to herself that she would eat right after enduring a dance with the favored junior partner. Unfortunately, after Lee angled her awkwardly around the dance floor, they'd drawn so much attention that everyone wanted to get pics of themselves toasting and dancing with the Christmas elf. At some point, she found herself in Timberman's arms with a glass of champagne in her hand. "Um; what?" she said, almost asking herself how she had gotten there. "I said you look lovely, tonight, Honey. Much better than in a shawl and sheath dress," he said, quickly twirling her around as they reached the edge of the dance floor. "Twirling makes my skirt go up; I'm dizzy," she murmured. A familiar dark figure flashed in the background and disappeared as Timberman turned her again. She looked around, trying to find the figure again, but she couldn't see him anywhere. Why was he there? Had she been singing again? "Well, I'll make sure nobody twirls you, my dear," he said, twirling her and smiling as her skirt flew up her long candy-cane striped legs. "The wives wouldn't like it." "I like your wife's dress Mr. Timberman; looks warm. It covers her ass when she sits, too," she slurred, frowning in confusion at the dark red drink in her hand now. Zach was frowning, and then he just looked blurry again as she swirled around. Maybe swirling made it harder for him to kill her. Why did he want to kill her? It just wasn't fair. Timberman leaned down and dipped her, "I'll make sure to give her your compliments. You know, if you like what wives wear, you should consider getting married. Lee is quite taken with you, you know," he said, stroking his hand against the soft pink velvet of her dress. Honey found herself drifting away and wandering inside her head again, thinking about Lee; he was handsome in an overly-polished way, said funny things, but they always sounded a little mean, like he wanted to be the only one laughing; and he also took her away from the food plate that just floated by on a table. It was still full. She should have eaten that food. What time was it? "He likes my boobs; and he doesn't want to kill me," she agreed eventually, surprised to find that Timberman was gone and she was dancing with Lee James again. "Well, I can't blame him for that; they're fucking perfect; just like everything else. I'm gonna come on them after you suck me off; he murmured, pulling her closer against him. "Let me take you home, Honey; penthouse view of the city; "Umm; no, that's not home; I live in the; railroad place; with the trains?" Honey explained, pointing in what she thought was the direction of the Lowertown Commons. Why did every guy think she lived with them tonight? "Sounds charming, Eliza Doolittle; you should trade up. You don't know how much I'd love twist your arms back and fuck this ass wide open over my balcony tonight," he said, reaching his hand under her skirt and greedily squeezing her bottom. "You'd like that, wouldn't you Honey? I can tell; Lee whispered, his cologne invading her head and making her queasy. "I feel sick; Honey whimpered and staggered away, trying to find the quiet table where the food was that would make her less drunk. The dance floor was confusing, though, always turning around and thumping and flashing. She leaned against a pillar until she got a better sense of where she was. She liked the pillar. It was big and strong; and it stroked her hair. "Honey; wake up, Honey. Open your mouth. You need to take these," the vaguely familiar voice said, cutting through the sleep that had been blocking out some of the pain she felt everywhere. She obediently opened her mouth and the hand put two caplets on her tongue. A water bottle squirted a little cool liquid into her mouth until she moaned and sucked harder, desperate for more. "Not too much. Wait until you can hold that down. I'll give you more in a bit. You don't want that IV back, do you?" "Nuh" Honey groaned. She hated needles. Sure, just about every part of her body hurt more than a needle did, right now, but somehow needle pain felt personal. Like with Zach. He didn't seem like someone who went around wanting to choke everybody; just her. She was nobody special; just a simple girl who kept lawyers organized and tried to be nice. Then, someone wonderful like Zach thought she needed to die. That hurt. Something about her made him go from being tender and intensely loving to someone who; it just didn't make sense. What did she do? Mercifully, sleep faded the pain and clouded her thoughts. Voices below her intruded into a wonderful dream where she was bouncing on clouds. Though not in the same room, the voices seemed strangely clear. "I can't; Terry, she cries when I do that," the pills voice said, making her eyes fly open. She knew that voice. She hadn't heard it for a year, but she would never forget it. Her body reacted with a confused mix of emotions, her cheeks flushing and adrenaline searing a path all through her at the same time. "That's because it hurts her. You know what hurts more? Bedsores. Man up. Use the pillows to prop her weight against the parts that aren't hurt on whichever side. It's either this, or she goes back to the hospital, and I have it on good authority you won't be allowed to visit after what happened." "She was screaming; Zach gritted. "Yeah, well they were putting her shoulder back in. People scream. That still doesn't excuse what you did. Since when did you become such a pussy about pain?" Terry asked. "since her." "oh my god." "Shut up," Zach grunted. "Oh my god; "Yeah, that's not shutting up." "The great Z-dog has been taken down;" "Shut up, maggot, it's not like that. I'm just taking care of h;" "By a little bitty pink Christmas elf; Terry laughed. There was a scuffling sound and then a loud whoomp and a forceful exhalation of air. "So, I turn her every few hours until she can do it for herself?" Zach asked, casually. "Yes, sir," Terry choked. "Anything else?" "Clear liquids until she can hold stuff down. Talk to her. Ask her questions. If she seems disoriented or part of her face goes slack, she goes back to the hospital. Don't fuck around." "Got it. Are you squared away, or do we need to discuss this further?" "Squared away, sir," Terry choked, then gasped in relief, panting faintly. "Jesus Christ, you haven't lost your touch. We on for the hump tomorrow at 0 500?" "No. I'm gonna stick close here until she's;" "Got it. Hey, maybe they have those Baby Bjorn things in elf-size. Then, you could just strap her onto your ba; ow! ow! ow, ow, ow!" "You weren't particularly attached to the rest of that sentence, were you, maggot?" Zach growled. "Sir, no sir; Terry squeaked. "I didn't think so. You'll be back here Wednesday," Zach stated, more as an order than a question. "Yeah, if you want me to. Honestly, right now she just needs rest and TLC more than a medic. That stands for 'tender loving care' by the way, not;" "You were just going," Zach said, as the voices moved to another end of the room below her. "Hey, you wanna know what makes an elf's toes curl up like tha;" Terry asked, his question cut off by the slamming of the door. Honey listened, trembling and terrified as Zach paced the floor below her. Though his voice hadn't changed, he sounded nothing like the man that had wooed her so tenderly a year ago. He sounded dangerous, brutal even. He definitely sounded like the kind of person that went around wanting to choke everyone, she thought, strangely relieved that her heartbreak felt a little less personal. How could she have been so wrong in her impression of him? She looked around the room, understanding now how the voices had reached her so easily. She was in an open industrial loft bedroom that opened onto the main floor below. Looking around, she realized she must be in Zach's huge bed, though if the crisply made side next to her was any indication, he hadn't been sleeping in it with her. Looking down her body, she gasped quietly. Her left arm was in a sling strapped to her chest, her legs were covered in bruises, and the right leg that was being stabbed with an invisible knife right now, was wrapped up in an air cast boot. What had happened to her? The last thing she remembered was feeling sick as she tried to get away from Lee's groping hands on the dance floor. After that; nothing. How did she get here? A beeping noise sounded below and Zach walked across the room to what sounded like a kitchen. The sound of water being poured into a cup, the ringing of a spoon stirring it, a pill bottle being opened. Honey shivered, realizing he was probably coming up to her, soon. She closed her eyes and tried to slow her breathing, feigning sleep. Steps ascending to the loft bedroom. Ankle stabbing, stab, stab, stab, stab with every panicked heartbeat. A tray went down on the nightstand next to her. A chair across the room was lifted and set down by the bed. Honey told herself to breathe slowly, willing the tears welling behind her lids not to leak out of her eyes. He would leave her alone if she was sleeping, wouldn't he? "You're not sleeping," Zach's voice stated, quietly, and her stomach clenched in fear. "You've been waking up for these pills every four hours like a junkie. I know you don't want to talk to me, Honey, but until you're squared away, you're gonna have to. So, cut the crap, open your eyes, and let's get this done." Honey opened her eyes to see his grim face looking down at her. With one blink, large tears rolled down her pale cheeks, and Zach's jaw set angrily. Sitting down in the chair, he put his elbows on his knees and leaned his massive shoulders forward, looking at her. His hands looked like they could crush rocks as he gripped them together. "Let's get some things straight. I don't know what you think you know about me, but acting like I'm some kind of psycho is pretty shitty. You want nothing of me, that's fine, but you're hurt because you screamed and flung yourself down some stairs rather than let me help you to an Uber. You're staying here until you're well, because some shithead at that party gave you enough roofies to be in a coma for almost 3 days and I'm not dragging my ass to that rat trap of yours in the Commons every day to make sure they don't come back while you're weak. Are we clear?" he asked. Honey swallowed and nodded, wincing at the pain in her neck and head. That just seemed to make Zach angrier. "While you are here, you will do as you're told. You will eat what you get, and you will not complain. You see these, here?" he said, holding up the magic caplets that made everything better. "These are the last ones you're getting. I'm switching you to ibuprofen and Tylenol because, unchecked, this Sackler shit will fuck you up for good and that's not happening on my watch. Do you understand?" he asked. "Yes," Honey whispered. At the sound of her voice, Zach's mouth twitched, but at least he didn't look as angry as when she'd nodded and winced. "You will follow your doctor's orders to the last goddamn word. You will rest. You will do your therapy. You will let me help you and you will ask me for what you need because I am not a fucking mind reader. And so help me, if you do anything stupid like get out of that bed without me here to help you, or push yourself away from me like you did at Gatsby's, or any other drama shit that hurts even one hair on that head again, I will personally make you regret you were ever born." "Yes, Zach," Honey breathed, confused. Two more tears rolled down her cheeks. Without thinking, she leaned over to wipe them off on her shoulder and cried out in pain. Zach squeezed his clenched hands together and several of his knuckles cracked. "You don't use my name. You don't get to use my name. You're not getting under my skin again, you hear me?" Zach growled, using his rough knuckle to wipe her tears. "Orders a fucking angel shot in my own fucking club; fuck you. I don't have a name, you don't have a name. You're nothing to me. Understand?" "Yes, sir," she whispered. Honey leaned forward and took the last spoonful of broth into her mouth and swallowed, looking longingly at the noodles at the bottom of the cup. Zach caught a drop of broth at the bottom of her lower lip with the spoon and returned it to her mouth. "No," he said, seeing where her eyes lingered. "I can do it," she pleaded. "Please; I haven't had anything solid since; how long has it been?" "I said, no. You throw up on another pair of my skivvies and I'll be doing laundry twice a week," Zach said, dabbing her mouth with a paper towel. "Why do I have to wear your boxer briefs anyway? They feel weird. They have this hole-flap thing; and there are some places that aren't supposed to feel a breeze," Honey said, lifting the blanket to look down at his underwear loosely covering her hips. "Are you complaining?" he asked quietly. Honey's eyes darted quickly to his face, "No sir," she murmured, looking down at her lap. "I just thought if I had some of my things here, you wouldn't have to do the laundry so much." "I'll worry about what I have to do, Honey," he said, unthinkingly using her name. Startled, she looked up to see his eyes wandering over her, his massive t-shirt sleeves going down past her elbows. She felt ridiculous and disheveled, but something about the way he looked at her made her hold her breath. Then, without another word, he slurped the noodles out of the cup and took the tray downstairs. After that, the two settled into a quiet routine of him feeding her, giving her medicine, and watching her sleep most of the day. She would sometimes awaken to the soft repetitive sounds of him running on a treadmill, or the clinking of him lifting weights downstairs where she couldn't see him. Then, he would go to the bathroom and shower. After his shower, he came upstairs again in his towel and took some clothes from his dresser before going back downstairs to change. Honey found herself looking forward to those few seconds each day, watching his droplet-covered torso twist as he leaned over his dresser. He frowned as he flipped through his carefully folded underwear. "You wearing the grey ones?" he asked, not looking at her. Honey peeked under the covers, "Um, yes sir," she replied. "I'm supposed to wear the grey ones today," he grumbled to himself. Honey didn't say anything. Zach was the one who picked out which underwear she wore today. He was the one who looked away while he painstakingly slipped the old ones off her hips and pulled the new ones over her boot and up her legs until her bottom was covered again. There was nothing about her life that wasn't chosen and executed by him. If he wasn't happy about the color of his underwear, that was his fault. Still, Zach kept rummaging around in his underwear drawer as if another crisply folded grey pair would somehow magically appear. Finally, rather than offend him by laughing, Honey spoke, "Um; you know, if they're clean, I could wear the pair I had on when I went to the hospital and you could have these. It would get you back on schedule; Zach lifted his head from the drawer and glared at her, as if he thought she was making fun of him. Honey held carefully still and shrugged her uninjured limb. She wasn't making fun, she just wanted to help. The movement caused the huge neckline to gape over to the side, revealing her bare shoulder. She waited as Zach stared impassively at her, the vein at his neck throbbing. After a long moment, he walked over and stood next to her, the tuck of his towel right next to her face. With every breath, she inhaled the scent of his wet body and the bar soap he used. A rivulet of water painstakingly slid from his chest and down his abdomen, until finally disappearing into the tightly twisted white cotton. Honey glanced up to see that he had been reading her face as she watched the droplet's progress. With a shaking breath, she blushed and pulled the covers higher with her good arm. With a twist of his mouth, Zach pulled the neckline back over her shoulder again and quickly left the room. That night, after leaving her with a video baby monitor watching her on the nightstand, Zach returned with a bag of her underwear and some of her nightgowns. After watching her excitedly sort through them, Zach pushed them aside and sat on the edge of the bed. "There were a bunch of boxes with tags on them in your living room. What's that about?" he asked. Honey's eyes dropped, "Oh; that's the charity gift thing for kids. You sign up and get them something they wished for and wrap it up so they can have something under the tree, when they wouldn't have something otherwise. It's nice, you know? I signed up for a bunch and I was supposed to wrap them and get them back to the law firm, but I guess; sorry kids," she trailed off. Looking furious, yet carefully impassive at the same time, Zach cursed under his breath and left again, returning with the packages and a huge stack of unused Styrofoam clamshells from Gatsby's, and dumped them on the bed next to her. For the next few hours, they "wrapped" the presents, Zach carefully fitting items into an appropriate-sized takeout box, and Honey trying to make them pretty with ribbons. As she watched him work, occasionally cursing under his breath, she found herself smiling at his frowning face when he was strategizing how to fit a basketball into three disassembled clamshells. "What are you laughing at?" he said, glaring when he caught her at it. "I wasn't laughing. I was smiling." "Why were you smiling, then?" he asked. "I guess; I just like you; sir," she said, glancing over at him. Honey saw a hopeful softness steal into Zach's eyes until he forcibly wrestled it down and a look of hooded sarcasm shaded them. "Yeah, well; fool me once," he sneered. Angry, Honey closed her eyes, blocking him out the only way she could. "You know, that's; that's not fair. Not after what you said; you scared me!" she said, frustrated that, once again, tears were rolling down her cheeks. Zach choked out a mirthless laugh, "I scared you? What did I say, Honey? What did I fucking say? God! I was on eggshells all night trying not to fuck it up with you and then you just; why? Those creeps you were dancing with at that party, those fucking 'nice guys' that drugged you, they were saying shit that made my skin crawl! I didn't even kiss you! I couldn't! I could barely breathe just for looking at you on our date; you looked just like a fucking angel. What did I say, Honey? What did I say?" Honey reached over and grabbed her phone, flipping through her photo album to a screenshot taken shortly before she blocked his number. "You didn't say it; you texted it. I remember watching you leave for the restroom thinking I'd met the love of my life and then you sent me this; she said, handing her phone to him. Zach took the phone, his face going from an angry red to pale horror in a matter of seconds. "This; this; he gasped, "I didn't; send this; to you; he said, shaking his head. "Whoever had your phone did, sir!" she said, emphasizing the last word, making him wince. "I spent the last year thinking you wanted to do that to me; to kill me. Every time I felt you watching me, every crowd I saw you show up in, every dark room I had to go into, that's what I thought about. I thought that a man I was head over heels about; that I could be so wrong about him. So, excuse me for thinking I liked you, sir. I promise it won't ever happen again!" Honey cried herself to sleep that night, refusing to speak to, or even look at Zach again. When she awoke, the bedroom was empty, and a glass of water and a pain pill were waiting on the nightstand. After swallowing the pill, she stared at the ceiling, furious. She didn't want to be there anymore, to be helpless and dependent on him, to obey all his stupid rules. He didn't deserve to take care of her. So, she tightened the straps on her boot and increased the air pressure to hold her broken ankle tightly enough to walk without her crutches. Then, she took off Zach's t-shirt, pulled on her elf dress, and called herself an Uber. It was when she saw the anticipated arrival time of 8 minutes that she realized her mistake. There was no way for her to get down from the loft and out of the apartment quietly in that amount of time. If she used the crutches, she would be able to descend the stairs quickly enough, but they made such a distinctive clicking racket that they would surely wake up her gorilla-like guard. If she hopped down the stairs on her good foot, it might have worked, but her good arm was on the opposite side and she kept losing her balance. Eventually she decided on the most painful course, of going down on her good and bad legs, using her good arm for support. Her boot thunked horribly the first few times, until she got the hang of it and could place it more quietly on the next step and then hop her good foot down to support it before the scream inside her could escape her lips. By the time she reached the bottom, though, she was shaking with pain and exhausted. Curiosity forced her to look around the rest of the apartment as she caught her breath, sitting on the bottom step. It was clean and unmistakably masculine. Exercise equipment took up a lot of the space not already claimed by a leather couch and TV arrangement. Zach lay on the couch, made up with sheets to act as a bed, his feet sticking out over the arm, his hand tucked under the back of his head, his chest rising and falling under the rumpled sheet. If she wasn't so angry, she'd find him handsome; or maybe he still was handsome, she thought grudgingly, closing her eyes miserably and looking away. Why couldn't he be ugly? Life wasn't fair. Uber. Right. Screwing up her courage for what was ahead, she stood and slowly hobbled across the hardwood floor, agonizing over every painful thump and noisy squeak until she finally reached the door. She unlocked the five locks on his large door, each of them being well-oiled and working perfectly. She expected no less of her anal-retentive, grey-skivvies-on-Tuesdays captor. Finally, she tugged open the heavy door to find endless flights of icy steel-mesh stairs leading all the way down to the street where her Uber was waiting. "Oh, you gotta be kidding me; she cried, breaking down into tears. A strong arm slid down around her waist and mercifully shifted her weight off her throbbing foot, "I know. It sucks. You should try it with a rucksack full of bricks," Zach said, leaning his head down and breathing into her hair. "I want to go home," she whispered. "Let me take care of you; please," Zach murmured into the top of her head, "I; it was my fault this happened to you. I scared you, I know that now; but, please believe me that I would never want to hurt or frighten you like that." "It wasn't just that text," she said, pulling her head away and looking up at him angrily. "All year, I never had a moment's peace. Even when I couldn't see you, I could feel you waiting in the quiet or dark places. Even if you weren't there;" "I was there," he confessed. "I was always there. I didn't understand what had gone wrong. You didn't want to talk to me, and the world just didn't make sense to me unless I knew where you were, what you were doing; unless I knew you were safe." "Maybe you knew I was safe, but I didn't! I thought I'd done something; that somehow I deserved to have this beautiful, scary monster hunting me. I couldn't stop thinking about what I'd done to destroy something that was so; wonderful." "You didn't do anything, Honey. Nothing at all. You were perfect. You were so perfect that I couldn't keep; you didn't do anything wrong. I never meant to send you that message; please, please believe me." "Why did you send it?" she asked, finally looking up into his eyes. The dark blue liquid pools of her eyes turned violet in the moonlight, and Zach felt a tightening in his chest. "I; I can't tell you that; but it was never meant for you." "You mean, you meant to send that message to someone else? To hurt them like that?" "Honey, I; Zach said, looking around, unable to meet her eyes, "Please, I can't; you wouldn't understand; my life isn't like that anymore." "I want to go home, Zach; please," she whispered. Zach closed his eyes for a long moment before he swallowed and nodded, looking like he was in more pain than she was. "I'll take you home tomorrow, okay? Or Terry will, if you don't want me to. He'll check the place out, make sure you're set up and safe there. You're tired, you're hurting, and your Uber's gone, now. Let me take you back upstairs and you can go in the morning. Please." At that moment, a throb of pain shot through her entire leg, and as angry as Honey was, she knew she couldn't face her empty apartment without a few more hours of rest. "Okay," she whispered. Se você acha que fez uma coisa simples, ou que não fez "nada demais", nunca entenderá o significado real do perdão. Mas se você consegue olhar para seu erro e perceber que por menor que ele pareça, ele ofendeu a Deus, você entenderá o que é o perdão.Em primeiro lugar é importante entender que Deus não está obrigado a perdoar ninguém. Se Ele o faz, é de boa vontade e para o nosso bem. Nós somos os maiores beneficiados em todo o processo. Fico a pensar que a felicidade está tão perto de nós e encontrá-la é bem mais simples do que podemos pensar, mas nem sempre percebemos e nem valorizamos isso! Ser amado por Deus e ser perdoado por Ele pode parecer algo simples, mas é o que de verdade, pode nos trazer a felicidade.

Segundo ele, a aprovação do texto não garante benefício automático e o Judiciário analisará individualmente cada conduta. Motta também indicou que ministros participaram das negociações para viabilizar o acordo. O presidente Lula (PT) afirmou que vetará o PL da dosimetria assim que o texto chegar à sua mesa e minimizou a possibilidade de o Congresso derrubar a decisão. Em declaração pública, o chefe do Executivo adotou tom de confronto ao dizer que, se os parlamentares quiserem, poderão derrubar o veto. O projeto trata da redução de penas ligadas aos atos de 8 de Janeiro. A Polícia Federal investiga os deputados Sóstenes Cavalcante e Carlos Jordy, ambos do PL, por suspeita de desvio de recursos da cota parlamentar. A operação apura um suposto esquema envolvendo assessores e uma empresa de fachada de locação de veículos. Na casa de Sóstenes, foram encontrados R$ 430 mil em espécie, valor que o parlamentar afirma ser proveniente da venda de um imóvel. Jordy classificou a ação como perseguição política. O ex-deputado Eduardo Bolsonaro afirmou que sua ida aos Estados Unidos “valeu muito a pena”, mesmo após a cassação do mandato pela Mesa Diretora da Câmara. Segundo ele, a perda do cargo não tem relação com crimes como corrupção ou tráfico, mas com o cumprimento do papel esperado por seus eleitores. Eduardo também criticou integrantes da Mesa Diretora e disse não ver a decisão como derrota. O ex-vereador do Rio de Janeiro Carlos Bolsonaro (PL) afirmou que manterá sua candidatura ao Senado por Santa Catarina, mesmo com a abertura de uma vaga no Rio de Janeiro. Segundo ele, a decisão segue orientação do ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro e faz parte de um projeto de fortalecimento da direita no Senado. A escolha causou divisão entre aliados, já que a deputada Carol de Toni foi preterida pelo PL e deve disputar a vaga por outra sigla. O presidente da Colômbia, Gustavo Petro, rejeitou uma cooperação militar com a Venezuela após Nicolás Maduro convocar forças colombianas a se unirem ao seu regime contra os Estados Unidos. Apesar de manter apoio político ao governo venezuelano, Petro afirmou que as tropas do país não recebem ordens estrangeiras e negou apoio a ditaduras. Edição com dois campeões não é todo dia. E com jogos legais também. Primeiro, claro, no quinto jogo, o Sesi Araraquara levantou a taça do Paulista Feminino de basquete. Dois dias depois foi a vez do Knicks levantar seu primeiro caneco desde de 1973. Mas claro, começamos falando primeiro do basquete masculino nacional. Na NBB já temos 3 classificados para o Super 8, Flamengo e Minas eram mais ou menos esperados, mas o surpreendente Pinheiros está na ponta e classificado também. Franca, Brasília e Corinthians estão muito próximos também. Corinthians, inclusive, se recuperou bem de um momento de baixa com uma bela vitória em cima do Brasília. Outro Corinthians que parece que está encaixando bem é o União, que fez sua tour pelo Rio de Janeiro e apresentou um bom basquete. Mas não é só de rosas que vive o basquete masculino, e nos torneios continentais parece que vamos perdendo a hegemonia dos últimos anos. Se a Sula já foi difícil, com o melhor brasileiro indo apenas até a segunda fase, na BCLA, só o Minas largou bem e garantiu duas vitórias. Franca e Flamengo perderam a primeira e ganharam a segunda e estão no segundo lugar do grupo. Chegamos então a final do paulista feminino, quinto jogo, em São Paulo, Corinthians contra Sesi Araraquara. Cada time havia ganhando os dois jogos que jogou em casa. Em abril deste ano foi anunciada a detecção de possíveis sinais de vida extraterrestre num planeta fora do sistema solar com o telescópio espacial James Webb, mas a descoberta não foi confirmada. Afinal, tem ou não tem vida nesse outro planeta? Que planeta é esse? Como é possível saber alguma coisa sobre um planeta distante? Este episódio do Oxigênio vai encarar essas questões com a ajuda de dois astrônomos especialistas no assunto: o Luan Ghezzi, da UFRJ, e a Aline Novais, da Universidade de Lund, na Suécia. Vamos saber um pouco mais sobre como é feita a busca por sinais de vida nas atmosferas de exoplanetas.  __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ROTEIRO Danilo: Você se lembra de quando uma possível detecção de sinais de vida extraterrestre virou notícia de destaque em abril deste ano, 2025? Se não, deixa eu refrescar a sua memória: usando o telescópio espacial James Webb, pesquisadores teriam captado sinais da atmosfera de um exoplaneta que indicariam a presença de um composto químico que aqui na Terra é produzido pela vida, algo que no jargão científico é chamado de bioassinatura.  A notícia bombou no mundo todo. Aqui no Brasil, o caso teve tanta repercussão que a Folha de São Paulo dedicou um editorial só para isso – os jornais costumam comentar política e economia nos editoriais, e raramente dão espaço para assuntos científicos. Nos dois meses seguintes, outros times de pesquisadores publicaram pelo menos quatro estudos analisando os mesmos dados coletados pelo James Webb e concluíram que as possíveis bioassinaturas desaparecem quando outros modelos são usados para interpretar os dados. Sem o mesmo entusiasmo, os jornais noticiaram essas refutações e logo o assunto sumiu da mídia. Afinal, o que aconteceu de fato? Tem ou não tem vida nesse outro planeta? Aliás, que planeta é esse? Como é possível saber alguma coisa sobre um planeta distante? Eu sou Danilo Albergaria, jornalista, historiador, e atualmente pesquiso justamente a comunicação da astrobiologia, essa área que estuda a origem, a evolução e a possível distribuição da vida no universo. Nesse episódio, com a ajuda de dois astrofísicos, o Luan Ghezzi e a Aline Novais, vou explicar como os astrofísicos fazem as suas descobertas e entender porque a busca por sinais de vida fora da Terra é tão complicada e cheia de incertezas. Esse é o primeiro episódio de uma série que vai tratar de temas relacionados à astrobiologia. [Vinheta] Danilo: Eu lembro que li a notícia quentinha, assim que ela saiu no New York Times, perto das dez da noite daquela quarta-feira, dia 16 de abril de 2025. No dia seguinte, acordei e fui checar meu Whatsapp, já imaginando a repercussão. Os grupos de amigos estavam pegando fogo com mensagens entusiasmadas, perguntas, piadas e memes. Os grupos de colegas pesquisadores, astrônomos e comunicadores de ciência, jornalistas de ciência, também tinham um monte de mensagens, mas o tom era diferente. Em vez de entusiasmo, o clima era de preocupação e um certo mau-humor: “de novo DMS no K2-18b fazendo muito barulho”, disse uma cientista. Outra desabafou: “eu tenho coisa melhor pra fazer do que ter que baixar a fervura disso com a imprensa”. Por que o mal-estar geral entre os cientistas? Já chego lá. Os cientistas eram colegas que eu tinha conhecido na Holanda, no tempo em que trabalhei como pesquisador na Universidade de Leiden. Lá eu pesquisei a comunicação da astrobiologia. Bem no comecinho do projeto – logo que eu cheguei lá, em setembro de 2023 – saiu a notícia de que um possível sinal de vida, um composto chamado sulfeto de dimetila, mais conhecido pela sigla DMS, havia sido detectado num planeta a 124 anos-luz de distância da Terra, o exoplaneta K2-18b. Eu vi a repercussão se desenrolando em tempo real: as primeiras notícias, os primeiros comentários críticos de outros cientistas, a discussão nas redes sociais e blogs. Como eu estava no departamento de astronomia de Leiden, vi também como isso aconteceu por dentro da comunidade científica: os astrônomos com quem conversei na época estavam perplexos com a forma espalhafatosa com que o resultado foi comunicado. O principal era: eles não estavam nem um pouco animados, otimistas mesmo de que se tratava, de verdade, da primeira detecção de vida extraterrestre. Por que isso estava acontecendo? Vamos começar a entender o porquê sabendo um pouco mais sobre o exoplaneta K2-18b, em que os possíveis sinais de vida teriam sido detectados. Primeiro: um exoplaneta é um planeta que não orbita o Sol, ou seja, é um planeta que está fora do sistema solar (por isso também são chamados de extrassolares). Existem planetas órfãos, que estão vagando sozinhos pelo espaço interestelar, e planetas girando em torno de objetos exóticos, como os pulsares, que são estrelas de nêutrons girando muito rápido, mas quando os astrônomos falam em exoplaneta, quase sempre estão falando sobre um planeta que gira em torno de outra estrela que não Sol. O Sol é uma estrela, obviamente, mas o contrário da frase geralmente a gente não ouve, mas que é verdade… as estrelas são como se fossem sóis, elas são sóis. As estrelas podem ser maiores, mais quentes e mais brilhantes do que o Sol – muitas das estrelas que vemos no céu noturno são assim. Mas as estrelas também podem ser menores, mais frias e menos brilhantes do que o Sol – as menores são chamadas de anãs vermelhas. Elas brilham tão pouco que não dá para vê-las no céu noturno a olho nu. O K2-18b é um planeta que gira em torno de uma dessas anãs vermelhas, a K2-18, uma estrela que tem menos da metade do tamanho do Sol. Só que o planeta é relativamente grande. Luan Ghezzi: Ele é um planeta que tem algo entre 8 e 9 vezes a massa da Terra, ou seja, é um planeta bem maior do que a Terra. E ele tem um raio ali aproximado de 2.6 vezes o raio da Terra. Então, com essa massa e com esse raio há uma dúvida se ele seria uma super-Terra, ou se ele seria o que a gente chama de Mini-Netuno, ou seja, super-Terra, são planetas terrestres, mas, porém, maiores do que a Terra. Mini-Netunos são planetas parecidos com o Netuno. Só que menores. Mas com essa junção de massa e raio, a gente consegue calcular a densidade. E aí essa densidade indicaria um valor entre a densidade da Terra e de Netuno. Então tudo indica que esse K2-18b estaria aí nesse regime dos mini-Netunos, que é uma classe de planetas que a gente não tem no sistema solar. Danilo: Netuno é um gigante gelado e ele tem uma estrutura muito diferente da Terra, uma estrutura que (junto com o fato de estar muito distante do Sol) o torna inabitável, inabitável à vida como a gente a conhece. Mini-Netunos e Super-Terras, de tamanho e massa intermediários entre a Terra e Netuno, não existem no sistema solar, mas são a maioria entre os mais de 6 mil exoplanetas descobertos até agora.  A estrela-mãe do K2-18b é bem mais fria, ou menos quente do que o Sol: enquanto o Sol tem uma temperatura média de 5500 graus Celsius, a temperatura da K2-18 não chega a 3200 graus. Então, se a gente imaginasse que o Sol fosse “frio” assim (frio entre aspas), a temperatura aqui na superfície da Terra seria muito, mas muito abaixo de zero, o que provavelmente tornaria nosso planeta inabitável. Só que o K2-18b gira muito mais perto de sua estrela-mãe. A distância média da Terra para o Sol é de aproximadamente 150 milhões de quilômetros, enquanto a distância média que separa o K2-18b e sua estrela é de 24 milhões de quilômetros. Outra medida ajuda a entender melhor como a órbita desse planeta é menor do que a da Terra: a cada 33 dias, ele completa uma volta ao redor da estrela. E comparado com a estrela, o planeta é tão pequeno, tão obscuro, que não pode ser observado diretamente. Nenhum telescópio atual é capaz de fazer imagens desse exoplaneta, assim como acontece com quase todos os exoplanetas descobertos até agora. São muito pequenos e facilmente ofuscados pelas estrelas que orbitam. Como, então, os astrônomos sabem que eles existem? O Luan Ghezzi explica. Luan Ghezzi: a detecção de exoplanetas é um processo que não é simples, porque os planetas são ofuscados pelas estrelas deles. Então é muito difícil a gente conseguir observar planetas diretamente,  você ver o planeta com uma imagem… cerca de um por cento dos mais de seis mil planetas que a gente conhece hoje foram detectados através do método de imageamento direto, que é realmente você apontar o telescópio, e você obtém uma imagem da estrela e do planeta ali, pertinho dela. Todos os outros planetas, ou seja, noventa e nove porcento dos que a gente conhece hoje foram detectados através de métodos indiretos, ou seja, a gente detecta o planeta a partir de alguma influência na estrela ou em alguma propriedade da estrela. Então, por exemplo, falando sobre o método de trânsito, que é com que mais se descobriu planetas até hoje, mais de setenta e cinco dos planetas que a gente conhece. Ele é um método em que o planeta passa na frente da estrela. E aí, quando esse planeta passa na frente da estrela, ele tampa uma parte dela. Então isso faz com que o brilho dela diminua um pouquinho e a gente consegue medir essa variação no brilho da estrela. A gente vai monitorando o brilho dela. E aí, de repente, a gente percebe uma queda e a gente fala. Bom, de repente passou alguma coisa ali na frente. Vamos continuar monitorando essa estrela. E aí, daqui a pouco, depois de um tempo, tem uma nova queda. A diminuição do brilho e a gente vai monitorando. E a gente percebe que isso é um fenômeno periódico. Ou seja, a cada x dias, dez dias, vinte dias ou alguma coisa do tipo, a gente tem aquela mesma diminuição do brilho ali na estrela. Então a gente infere a presença de um planeta ali ao redor dela. E aí, como são o planeta e a estrela um, o planeta passando na frente da estrela, tem uma relação entre os tamanhos. Quanto maior o planeta for, ele vai bloquear mais luz da estrela. Então, a partir disso, a gente consegue medir o raio do planeta. Então esse método do trânsito não só permite que a gente descubra os exoplanetas, como a gente também pode ter uma informação a respeito dos raios deles. Esse é o método que está sendo bastante usado e que produziu mais descobertas até hoje. Danilo: e foi por esse método que o K2-18b foi descoberto em 2015 com o telescópio espacial Kepler. Esse telescópio foi lançado em 2009 e revolucionou a área – com o Kepler, mais de 2700 exoplanetas foram detectados. Com ele, os astrônomos puderam estimar que existem mais planetas do que estrelas na nossa galáxia.  A órbita do K2-18b é menor do que a do planeta Mercúrio, que completa uma volta ao redor do Sol a cada 88 dias terrestres. Mas como sua estrela-mãe é mais fria do que o Sol, isso coloca o K2-18b dentro do que os astrônomos chamam de zona habitável: nem tão longe da estrela para que a superfície esfrie a ponto de congelar a água, nem tão perto para que o calor a evapore; é a distância ideal para que a água permaneça em estado líquido na superfície de um planeta parecido com a Terra. Só que o estado da água depende de outros parâmetros, como a pressão atmosférica, por exemplo. E é por isso que a tal da zona habitável é um conceito muito limitado, que pode se tornar até mesmo enganoso: um planeta estar na zona habitável não significa que ele seja de fato habitável. Claro, estar na zona habitável é uma das condições necessárias para que a superfície de um planeta tenha água líquida, o que é fundamental para que essa superfície seja habitável. Ter uma atmosfera é outra condição necessária. Além de estar na zona habitável, o K2-18b tem atmosfera e o Luan também explica como os astrônomos fazem para saber se um exoplaneta como o K2-18b tem uma atmosfera. Luan: a gente estava falando sobre o método de trânsito. E a gente falou que o planeta passa na frente da estrela e bloqueia uma parte da luz dela. Beleza, isso aí a gente já deixou estabelecido. Mas se esse planeta tem uma atmosfera, a luz da estrela que vai atingir essa parte da atmosfera não vai ser completamente bloqueada. A luz da estrela vai atravessar a atmosfera e vai ser transmitida através dela. A gente tem essa parte bloqueada da luz que a gente não recebe, a gente percebe a diminuição de brilho da estrela, com o método de trânsito, mas tem essa luz que atravessa a atmosfera e chega até a gente depois de interagir com os componentes da atmosfera daquele planeta. Então a gente pode analisar essa luz, que é transmitida através da atmosfera do planeta para obter informações sobre a composição dela. Danilo: e como é possível saber a composição química dessa atmosfera? A Aline Novais é uma astrofísica brasileira fazendo pós-doutorado na Universidade de Lund, na Suécia. A tese de doutorado dela, orientada pelo Luan, foi exatamente sobre esse tema: a coleta e a análise dos dados de espectroscopia de atmosferas de exoplanetas. Aline: No início, a gente não está olhando uma foto, uma imagem dos planetas e das estrelas. A gente está vendo eles através de uma coisa que a gente chama de espectro, que é a luz da estrela ou do planeta em diferentes comprimentos de onda. O que é o comprimento de onda? É literalmente o tamanho da onda. Você pode ver também como se fossem cores diferentes. Então a gente vai estar vendo vários detalhes em diferentes comprimentos de onda. O que acontece? A gente já sabe, não da astronomia, mas da química de estudos bem antigos que determinados compostos, vou usar aqui, por exemplo, a água, ela vai ter linhas muito específicas em determinados comprimentos de onda que a gente já conhece, que a gente já sabe. Então já é estabelecido que no cumprimento de onda X, Y, Z, vai ter linha de água. Então, quando a gente está observando novamente o brilho da estrela que passou ali pela atmosfera do planeta. Interagiu com o que tem lá, que a gente não sabe. Quando a gente vê o espectro dessa estrela que passou pela atmosfera, a gente vai poder comparar com o que a gente já sabe. Então, por exemplo, o que a gente já sabe da água, a gente vai ver que vai bater. É como se fosse um código de barras. Bate certinho o que tem na estrela, no planeta e o que tem aqui na Terra. E aí, a partir disso, a gente consegue dizer: “Ah, provavelmente tem água naquele planeta.” Claro que não é tão simples, tão preto no branco, porque tem muitas moléculas, muitos átomos, a quantidade de moléculas que tem ali também interferem nessas linhas. Mas, de forma mais geral, é isso. A gente compara um com o outro. E a gente fala: essa assinatura aqui tem que ser de água. Danilo: Em setembro de 2023, o time de pesquisadores liderado pelo Nikku Madhusudhan, da Universidade de Cambridge, na Inglaterra, anunciou a caracterização atmosférica do K2-18b feita com o telescópio espacial James Webb. Alguns anos antes, a atmosfera do exoplaneta tinha sido observada com o telescópio espacial Hubble, que havia indicado a presença de vapor de água. Com o James Webb, esses cientistas concluíram que a atmosfera não tinha vapor de água, mas fortes indícios de metano e dióxido de carbono, o gás carbônico. Não só isso: no mesmo estudo, eles também alegaram ter detectado, com menor grau de confiança, o sulfeto de dimetila, também chamado de DMS, uma molécula orgânica que aqui na Terra é produzida pela vida marinha, principalmente pelos fitoplânctons e microalgas. O DMS pode ser produzido em laboratório mas não existe um processo natural em que o nosso planeta, sozinho, consiga fazer essa molécula sem envolver a vida. Ou seja, o DMS seria uma possível bioassinatura, um sinal indireto da existência de vida. Por isso, esses cientistas alegaram ter encontrado uma possível evidência de vida na atmosfera do K2-18b. O fato é que a suposta evidência de vida, a detecção de DMS lá de 2023, tinha um grau de confiança estatística muito baixo para contar seriamente como evidência de vida. O time liderado pelo Madhusudhan continuou observando o K2-18b e voltou a publicar resultados apontando a presença de DMS usando outros instrumentos do James Webb. Foram esses resultados que fizeram tanto barulho em abril de 2025. E por que tanto barulho? Porque esse novo estudo apresenta um grau de confiança estatística mais alto para a detecção de DMS. Ele também alega ter detectado outra possível bioassinatura, uma molécula aparentada ao DMS, o DMDS, ou dissulfeto de dimetila. O resultado pareceu reforçar muito a hipótese da presença dessas possíveis bioassinaturas no K2-18b e, por isso, os grandes meios de comunicação deram ainda mais atenção ao resultado do que há dois anos atrás. O problema é que é muito complicado analisar os resultados do James Webb sobre essas atmosferas, e ainda mais difícil cravar a presença desse ou daquele composto químico ali. Aline Novais: Acho que a primeira etapa mais difícil de todas é como você tinha falado, Danilo, é separar o que é a luz do planeta e o que é a luz da estrela. Quer dizer, da atmosfera do planeta e o que é luz da estrela. E isso a gente faz como quando a gente está observando o trânsito. A gente não só observa o planeta passando na frente da estrela. Mas a gente também observa a estrela sem o planeta, e a gente compara esses dois. É literalmente subtrair um do outro. Então, assim, supondo que a gente já tem aqui o espectro pronto na nossa frente. O que a gente vai fazer para entender o que está naquele espectro? Aquilo ali é uma observação. Só que a gente tem da teoria da física, a gente sabe mais ou menos quais são as equações que vão reger a atmosfera de um planeta. Então a gente sabe o que acontece de formas gerais, que é parecida com o que acontece aqui na Terra e com o planeta do sistema solar. Então a gente sabe mais ou menos como deve ser a pressão, a temperatura. A gente sabe mais ou menos quais compostos químicos vão ter em cada camada da atmosfera, que depende de várias coisas. A gente sabe que se um planeta está muito próximo da estrela, ele vai ter determinados compostos químicos que ele não teria se ele estivesse muito mais longe da estrela dele. Então tudo isso interfere. E aí, o que a gente faz? A gente tem os dados, a gente tem o que a gente observou no telescópio. E a gente vai comparar com a teoria, com modelos que a gente faz no computador, programando, parará, parará, que vão reger aquela atmosfera. E aí, a partir disso, a gente vai comparar e ver o que faz sentido, o que não faz, o que bate e o que não bate. Danilo: Notaram que a Aline ressalta o papel dos modelos teóricos na interpretação dos dados? Os astrônomos comparam os dados coletados pelo telescópio com o que esperam observar, orientados pelas teorias e modelos considerados promissores para representar o que de fato está lá na atmosfera do planeta. E é nessa comparação que entra a estatística, a probabilidade de que as observações correspondem a este ou aquele modelo teórico. Aline Novais: Na estatística, a gente sempre vai estar quando a gente tiver probabilidade de alguma coisa, a gente sempre vai estar comparando uma coisa X com uma coisa Y. A gente nunca vai ter uma estatística falando que sim ou que não, vai ser sempre uma comparação de uma coisa ou de outra. Então, quando a gente, por exemplo, a gente tem o espectro lá de um planeta, a gente tem assinaturas que provavelmente podem ser de água, mas vamos supor que essa assinatura também é muito parecida com algum outro elemento. Com algum outro composto químico. O que a gente vai fazer? A gente vai comparar os dois e a resposta não vai ser nem que sim nem que não. A resposta vai ser: “Ah, o modelo que tem água é mais favorável.” Ou então, ele ajusta melhor os dados, do que o modelo com aquele outro composto químico.  Danilo: O time do Nikku Madhusudhan, que fala em possível detecção de DMS, tem um modelo predileto que eles mesmos desenvolveram para explicar planetas como o K2-18b: os mundos hiceanos, planetas inteiramente cobertos por um oceano de água líquida debaixo de uma espessa atmosfera de hidrogênio molecular – por isso o nome, que é uma junção do “hi” de hidrogênio e “ceano” de oceano. É esse modelo que orienta a interpretação de que os dados do K2-18b podem conter as bioassinaturas.  Aline: Todo o resultado final, que é: possivelmente detectamos assinaturas, não dependem dos dados em si, mas dependem de como eles analisaram os dados e que modelos foram utilizados para analisar esses dados. […] Os resultados vão sempre depender de como a gente analisou esses dados. […] Então a questão da detecção, ou possível detecção de bioassinatura depende principalmente de como foram colocados os modelos, do que foi inserido nos modelos e como esses modelos foram comparados. Nesse caso, os modelos utilizados foram modelos que estavam supondo que o planeta era hiceano. Que o planeta tinha um oceano e tinha uma atmosfera de hidrogênio, majoritariamente de hidrogênio. Porém, outros estudos levantaram também a possibilidade de esse planeta não ser desse tipo, ser um planeta, por exemplo, coberto de lava e não de oceano, ou com uma atmosfera, com compostos diferentes, onde a maioria não seria hidrogênio, por exemplo. E esses modelos não foram utilizados para testar essas bioassinaturas. Então o que acontece: no modelo deles, com o oceano, com a atmosfera X, Y e Z, é compatível com a existência de bioassinaturas. Porém, é completamente dependente do modelo.  Danilo: Então, a escolha de modelos teóricos diferentes afetam a interpretação dos resultados e das conclusões sobre a composição química da atmosfera de exoplanetas.  Aline: Esse grupo acredita que o planeta tenha majoritariamente hidrogênio na sua composição. O que eles vão fazer no modelo deles? Eles vão colocar sei lá quantos por cento de hidrogênio na composição, no modelo deles. Então eles estão construindo um modelo que seja semelhante ao que eles acreditam que o planeta tem. Eu não vou colocar nitrogênio se eu acho que não tem nitrogênio. Então, aí que entra a controvérsia, que é justamente o modelo ser feito para encontrar o que eles tentam encontrar. Então, assim, se você pegasse um modelo completamente diferente, se você pegasse um modelo, por exemplo, de um planeta feito de lava, que tem metano, que tem isso, que tem aquilo, será que você encontraria a mesma coisa? Danilo: Saber qual modelo teórico de atmosferas de exoplanetas corresponde melhor à realidade é algo muito difícil. O que dá pra fazer é comparar os modelos entre si: qual deles representa melhor a atmosfera do exoplaneta em comparação com outro modelo. Aline: A gente nunca vai estar falando que o modelo é perfeito. A gente nunca vai estar falando que a atmosfera é assim. A gente sempre vai estar falando que esse modelo representa melhor a atmosfera do que um outro modelo. E se você pegar uma coisa muito ruim que não tem nada a ver e comparar com uma coisa que funciona, vai ser muito fácil você falar que aquele modelo funciona melhor, certo? Então, por exemplo, no caso do K2-18b: eles fizeram um modelo que tinha lá as moléculas, o DMS, o DMDS e tal, e compararam aquilo com um modelo que não tem DMS e DMDS. O modelo que tem falou “pô, esse modelo aqui se ajusta melhor aos dados do telescópio do que esse outro que não tem”. Mas isso não significa que tenha aquelas moléculas. Isso significa que aquele modelo, naquelas circunstâncias, foi melhor estatisticamente do que um modelo que não tinha aquelas moléculas.  Danilo: O Luan tem uma analogia interessante pra explicar isso que a Aline falou. Luan: É como se você, por exemplo, vai em uma loja e vai experimentar uma roupa. Aí você pega lá uma mesma blusa igualzinha, P, M ou G. Você experimenta as três e você vê qual que você acha que se ajusta melhor ao seu corpo, né? Qual ficou com um caimento melhor? Enfim, então você vai fazendo essas comparações, não é que a blusa talvez M não tenha ficado boa, mas talvez a P ou a G tenha ficado melhor. Então os modelos são agitados dessa forma, mas também como a Aline falou depois que você descobriu o tamanho, por exemplo, você chegou à conclusão que o tamanho da blusa é M, você pode pegar e escolher diferentes variações de cores. Você pode pegar essa mesma blusa M, azul, verde, amarela, vermelha, né? E aí elas podem fornecer igualmente o mesmo bom ajuste no seu corpo. Só que a questão é que tem cores diferentes. […] A gente obviamente usa os modelos mais completos que a gente tem hoje em dia, mas não necessariamente, eles são hoje mais completos, mas não necessariamente eles são cem por cento completos. De repente está faltando alguma coisa ali que a gente não sabe.  [Música] Danilo: Eu conversei pessoalmente com o líder do time de cientistas que alegou ter descoberto as possíveis bioassinaturas no K2-18b, o Nikku Madhusudhan, quando ele estava na Holanda para participar de uma conferência em junho de 2024. Ele pareceu entusiasmado com a possibilidade de vir a confirmar possíveis bioassinaturas em exoplanetas e ao mesmo tempo cuidadoso, aparentemente consciente do risco de se comunicar a descoberta de vida extraterrestre prematuramente. A questão é que ele já cometeu alguns deslizes na comunicação com o público: por exemplo, em abril de 2024, num programa de rádio na Inglaterra, ele disse que a chance de ter descoberto vida no K2-18b era de 50% – o próprio apresentador do programa ficou surpreso com a estimativa. Naquela mesma conferência da Holanda, o Madhusudhan também pareceu muito confiante ao falar do assunto com o público de especialistas em exoplanetas – ele sabia que enfrentava muitos céticos na plateia. Ele disse que os planetas hiceanos eram “a melhor aposta” que temos com a tecnologia atual para descobrir vida extraterrestre.   Na palestra em que apresentou os novos resultados esse ano, o Madhusudhan contou que essa hipótese de mundos hiceanos foi desenvolvida com a ajuda de alunos de pós-graduação dele quando ele os desafiou a criar um modelo teórico de Mini-Netuno que oferecesse condições habitáveis, amenas para a vida. Mas a questão é que a gente não sabe se os mundos hiceanos sequer existem. É uma alternativa, uma hipótese para explicar o pouco que sabemos sobre esses exoplanetas. Há outras hipóteses, tão promissoras quanto essa, e muito menos amigáveis à existência da vida como a conhecemos. Enfim, a gente ainda sabe muito pouco sobre esses exoplanetas. Ainda não dá para decidir qual hipótese é a que melhor descreve a estrutura deles. Mas o que vai acontecer se algum dia os cientistas conseguirem resultados que apontem para uma detecção de possível bioassinatura que seja num alto grau de confiança, a tal ponto que seria insensato duvidar de sua existência? Estaríamos diante de uma incontroversa descoberta de vida extraterrestre? Digamos que os cientistas publiquem, daqui a algum tempo, novos resultados que apontam, com um grau de confiança altíssimo, para a presença de DMS no K2-18b. Mesmo que a gente tivesse certeza de que tem DMS naquela atmosfera, não seria possível cravar que a presença de DMS é causada pela vida. Como a gente tem ainda muito pouca informação sobre os ambientes que os Mini-Netunos podem apresentar, e como o nosso conhecimento sobre a própria vida ainda é muito limitado, vai ser muito difícil – para não dizer praticamente impossível – ter certeza de que a presença de uma possível bioassinatura é de fato uma bioassinatura.  Luan: A gente sabe que aqui na Terra, o DMS e o DMDS estão associados a processos biológicos. Mas a gente está falando de um planeta que é um Mini-Netuno, talvez um planeta hiceano. Será que esse planeta não tem processos químicos diferentes que podem gerar essas moléculas sem a presença da vida?  Danilo: Como disse o Luan, pode ser que processos naturais desconhecidos, sem o envolvimento da vida, sejam os responsáveis pela presença de DMS no K2-18b. A gente sabe que o DMS pode ser gerado fora da Terra por processos naturais, sem relação com a presença de vida. Para que seja gerado assim, são necessárias condições muito diferentes das que temos aqui na Terra. O interior de planetas gigantes como Júpiter, por exemplo, dá essas condições. DMS também foi detectado recentemente na superfície de um cometa, em condições muito hostis para a vida como a gente a conhece. Mais hostis ainda são as condições do meio interestelar, o espaço abissal e incrivelmente frio que existe entre as estrelas. Mesmo assim, DMS já foi detectado no meio interestelar.  É por isso que detectar uma possível bioassinatura num exoplaneta não necessariamente responde à pergunta sobre vida fora da Terra. É mais útil pensar nesses dados como peças de um quebra-cabeças: uma possível bioassinatura em um exoplaneta é uma peça que pode vir a ajudar a montar o quebra-cabeças em que a grande questão é se existe ou não existe vida fora da Terra, mas dificilmente será, sozinha, a resposta definitiva. Luan: Será que as bioassinaturas efetivamente foram produzidas por vida? Então, primeiro, estudos para entender diversos processos químicos ou físicos que poderiam gerar essas moléculas, que a gente considera como bioassinaturas, pra tentar entender em outros contextos, se elas seriam produzidas sem a presença de vida. Mas fora isso, nós astrônomos, nós também tentamos procurar conjuntos de bioassinaturas. Porque se você acha só o DMS ou o DMDS é uma coisa. Agora, se você acha isso e mais o oxigênio ou mais outra coisa, aí as evidências começam a ficar mais fortes. Um par muito comum que o pessoal comenta é você achar metano e oxigênio numa atmosfera de exoplaneta. Por quê? Porque esses dois compostos, se você deixar eles lá na atmosfera do planeta sem nenhum tipo de processo biológico, eles vão reagir. Vão formar água e gás carbônico. Então, se você detecta quantidades apreciáveis de metano e oxigênio numa atmosfera, isso indica que você tem algum processo biológico ali, repondo constantemente esses componentes na atmosfera. Então, a gente vai tentando buscar por pares ou conjuntos de bioassinaturas, porque isso vai construindo um cenário mais forte. Você olha, esse planeta está na zona habitável. Ele tem uma massa parecida com a da Terra. Ele tem uma temperatura parecida com a da Terra. Ele tem conjuntos de bioassinaturas que poderiam indicar a presença de vida. Então você vai construindo um quebra-cabeça ali, tentando chegar num conjunto de evidências.  Danilo: Talvez só vamos conseguir ter certeza quando tivermos condições de viajar os 124 anos-luz que nos separam do K2-18b, por exemplo, para examinar o planeta “in situ”, ou seja, lá no local – só que isso ainda é assunto para a ficção científica, não para a ciência atual. Não quer dizer que, dada a dificuldade, a gente deva desistir de fazer ciência nesse sentido, de detectar bioassinaturas nos exoplanetas. Luan: É claro que é super interessante aplicar esses modelos e sugerir a possível existência dessas moléculas. Isso ajuda a avançar o conhecimento, porque isso gera um interesse, gera um debate, um monte de gente vai testar, e outras pessoas já testaram e mostraram que, ou não tem a molécula nos modelos deles, ou eles não detectam ou detectam uma quantidade muito baixa. Enfim, então isso gera um debate que vai avançar o conhecimento. Então isso, no meio científico, é muito interessante esse debate, que gera outras pesquisas, e todo mundo tentando olhar por diferentes ângulos, para a gente tentar entender de uma maneira mais completa. Mas o cuidado… E aí, o grande serviço que o seu podcast está fazendo é como a gente faz chegar essa informação no público, que é o que você falou, uma coisa é: utilizamos um modelo super específico, e esse modelo indica a possível presença dessas moléculas que, na Terra, são associadas à vida. Outra coisa é dizer, na imprensa, achamos os sinais mais fortes de vida até agora. É uma distância muito grande entre essas duas coisas. Aline: Se eu analisei o meu dado e eu vi que tem aquela molécula de bioassinatura, uma coisa é eu falar: “Tem!” Outra coisa é falar: “Ó, eu analisei com esse modelo aqui e esse modelo aqui faz sentido. Ele representa melhor os meus dados do que o outro modelo”. São maneiras diferentes de falar. Mas qual que é a que vende mais? Danilo: Foi no final do nosso papo que o Luan e a Aline tocaram nessa questão que tem se tornado central nos últimos anos: como comunicar os resultados da astrobiologia da forma mais responsável? É possível que com o James Webb vamos continuar vendo potenciais detecções de bioassinaturas num futuro próximo. Por isso, a comunidade científica está preocupada com a forma como comunicamos os resultados da busca por vida fora da Terra e está se movimentando para contornar os problemas que provavelmente teremos no futuro. Eu venho participando desses esforços, pesquisando como a astrobiologia está sendo comunicada, e até ajudei a organizar um evento no ano passado para discutir isso com cientistas e jornalistas de ciência, mas conto essa história em outra hora. A pesquisa Quaest divulgada nesta terça-feira aponta que o senador Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) é o nome mais competitivo da oposição contra o presidente Lula (PT) na disputa presidencial de 2026. No levantamento, Lula aparece com 39% das intenções de voto, enquanto Flávio soma 23%, superando outros nomes como Tarcísio de Freitas, Ronaldo Caiado, Romeu Zema e Ratinho Junior. O governo de São Paulo, sob a gestão de Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos) e do então secretário de Segurança Pública Guilherme Derrite (PL), registrou em outubro os menores índices de roubos, latrocínios e homicídios desde 2001. Segundo a Secretaria de Segurança, a taxa de mortes caiu de 33,3 para 5,53 por 100 mil habitantes. O governo atribui os resultados ao uso de tecnologia, inteligência policial e a programas como a Muralha Paulista. Confira os destaques de Os Pingos nos Is desta segunda-feira (15):A defesa do ex-presidente Jair Bolsonaro (PL) entrou com novo pedido no Supremo Tribunal Federal solicitando autorização para uma cirurgia de emergência e a transferência para prisão domiciliar. Segundo os advogados, houve agravamento do quadro clínico, comprovado por exames de imagem e novo relatório médico. O pedido foi encaminhado ao STF para análise. O presidente do Senado, Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil-AP), pautou a votação do PL da dosimetria para esta quarta-feira. O projeto também deve ser analisado no mesmo dia pela Comissão de Constituição e Justiça da Casa. Alcolumbre já havia sinalizado a intenção de levar a matéria à votação até o fim do ano. Durante atos da esquerda contra o PL da dosimetria realizados neste domingo (14), uma manifestante foi detida após pichar uma estátua em Belo Horizonte. A mulher, identificada como Thabata Pinheiro Campos, escreveu “Brasil Terra Indígena” na base do Monumento à Terra Mineira e resistiu à abordagem da Guarda Municipal. Segundo a defesa, ela foi ouvida e liberada pela polícia ainda no domingo. O presidente da Comissão de Constituição e Justiça do Senado, Otto Alencar (PSD-BA), afirmou que a versão do PL da dosimetria aprovada pela Câmara apresenta brechas e extrapola os atos de 8 de janeiro, alcançando crimes comuns. Segundo o senador, o texto pode favorecer facções criminosas e, por isso, não teria chance de avançar na CCJ. O Senado admite discutir mudanças nos critérios para processos de impeachment de presidentes da República. A proposta prevê que um presidente reeleito possa responder por atos praticados no mandato anterior. Atualmente, o entendimento da legislação limita a responsabilização a crimes cometidos dentro da mesma legislatura. O governo do presidente Lula (PT) criou, em três anos, três vezes mais cargos comissionados do que a gestão de Jair Bolsonaro (PL) no mesmo período. São 4.417 cargos na administração atual, contra 1.183 nos três primeiros anos do governo anterior. Ao todo, o governo federal soma mais de 50 mil cargos comissionados, concentrados principalmente no INSS, no Ministério da Fazenda e na Polícia Federal. O presidente da Câmara dos Deputados, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), decidiu adiar as votações da PEC da Segurança e do PL Antifacção. A decisão foi tomada após reunião de líderes partidários. Segundo Motta, a avaliação é de que os temas devem ser discutidos com mais calma antes de avançarem no plenário. José Antonio Kast (Partido Republicano) venceu as eleições presidenciais no Chile realizadas neste domingo (14), resultado que marca uma mudança no equilíbrio político da América do Sul. Guard your energy and anticipate that any tasks or any clarity you hope to gain will be hard won and might take a little while for you to see. [4:00] The Sun squares Saturn (Dec. 16, 8:33 pm PST) at 25°28' Sagittarius-Pisces. Use this time to plan and prepare for things that you want to get done at the New Moon, rather than pushing hard to actually do them. [5:04] The Sun squares Neptune (Dec. 20, 5:02 pm PST) at 29°24' Sagittarius-Pisces. Expect to feel drained, maybe a bit confused or unclear about what you want to accomplish during this New Moon cycle. Don't be too hard on yourself if you find you just don't have the energy.
