„Unser Einfluss auf die Politik scheint extrem limitiert zu sein“: Mit dieser Diagnose beschreibt Sven Köllmann ziemlich nüchtern, wo die Immobilienbranche aktuell steht. Den Bauturbo bezeichnet er als „Rohrkrepierer“. Gute Idee, schlechte Umsetzung, zu viele Rechtsunsicherheiten in den Kommunen und am Ende wenig Wirkung in der Praxis. Wir sprechen über politische Fehlanreize im Immobilienmarkt, über Regulierung als Dauerlösung und über die wachsende Politikverdrossenheit in der Branche und der Gesellschaft und welche Konsequenzen das für Investitionen, Vertrauen und die wirtschaftliche Stabilität hat. Als CEO von FIBONA zog Sven Köllmann 2022 die Reißleine. Nach der Fertigstellung des LÉGÈRE-Hotels in Erfurt reagierte er auf die steigende Inflation und den absehbaren Druck auf die Zinsmärkte mit einer radikalen Entscheidung: Alle geplanten Bauvorhaben wurden gestoppt. Projekte aus der Pipeline auf Eis gelegt, der Fokus stattdessen auf Sanierungen und Umbauten verschoben. Viele hielten das für übertrieben, manche für unnötig. Heute sagt er: Genau dieser Schritt war richtig. Auch deshalb konnte Sven ein Neubau-Hotel-Projekt in Lindau am Bodensee starten. Ein Standort, der vor wenigen Jahren kaum verfügbar gewesen wäre, was er übersetzt mit: eine Chance in der Krise. Parallel dazu ordnet Sven Köllmann den Zusammenbruch von Revo ein, als Folge eines Marktes, in dem schnelles Wachstum lange wichtiger war als Substanz. Gemeinsam mit CFC in Hamburg ist FIBONA seit 2024 auch in Restrukturierung und Distressed Investments aktiv. Wir sprechen über ein Beispiel des erfolgreichen Joint Ventures, die Transformation eines ehemaligen Shoppingcenters in Berlin-Steglitz zu einem vermieteten Fachmarktzentrum. Weitere Ankäufe – nicht nur Immobilien – sollen folgen. Am Ende wird Sven noch einmal grundsätzlich. Der Rückzug aus dem Healthcare-Segment ist kein Stimmungswechsel von ihm, sondern auch wieder eine bewusste unternehmerische Entscheidung: „Diese Asseklasse ist extrem beeinflusst von politischen Vorgaben.“ Er fragt sich, ob eigentlich die Implikationen allen klar sind. Die Antwort liegt für ihn auf der Hand.

The discussion turns to Joseph Stalin and his relationship with the legacy of Leninism. Stalin was a more "ideologically flexible" and savvy political operator than Trotsky, who was relentlessly focused on immediate and continuous revolution. While both Lenin and Trotsky employed political violence, the terror under Stalin was a different phenomenon because much of it was directed at high-ranking members of the Communist Party and the secret police in the Great Purge. The purges were motivated by Stalin's paranoia and the need to find scapegoats for the regime's failure to deliver prosperity and freedom. The assassination of Trotsky in 1940 is often seen as wrapping up the Great Terror, though arrests and executions continued.

Spotlight on the September 2024 fatal crash involving an Evolution Revo light sport weight shift aircraft (LSA). A CFI and student pilot were killed when the aircraft's wings folded and it entered a steep dive.Todd Curtis and John Goglia explore questions not answered in the recently released NTSB report. How or why did the CFI miss the checklist item to attach a key support cable? Had the aircraft recently been transported? Was work done on the aircraft?The aircraft uses hang-glider-like wings for lift. It relies on moving a control bar to shift the center of gravity and change the shape of the wing and does not rely on traditional flight control surfaces. Paying out and taking in rope works fluently without resistance. Only when the rope rushes with a faster speed than 4 metre/second through the device, it arrests within a few centimetres. According to European Norm EN15151-1, the Revo is a "Braking devices with manually assisted locking" (Type 8: "Belaying and abseiling with a panic locking element"). It is suitable for belaying with a dynamic single rope (Ø 8,5–11 mm), for left-handed and right-handed persons equally. Abseiling is possible on a single strand with some restrictions. Revo is not a new company, but it's now in the process of reintroducing itself to more people. The performance eyewear brand first launched in the '80s selling fashionable sunglasses with science-backed sun protection. Over the years, the brand got sold to many big players, including Ray-Ban and Essilor Luxxotica. But in 2018, an eyewear company called B. Robinson -- with the help of some outside investors -- decided to purchase Revo. "It didn't have the same level of investment and the same level of support that it has had as an independent brand," said Cliff Robinson, the CEO of Revo, as well as the chief executive of B. Robinson. Now, the company is in growth mode once again and just opened its first U.S. store in New York -- less than a year after opening a store in Barcelona. "The growth has been coming from all these different sectors," said Robinson. "We're seeing growth in optical stores. We're seeing growth in the golf channel. We're seeing growth in the winter market with both goggles and sunglasses at resort areas. We're seeing growth from resorts and hospitality." Robinson joined the Modern Retail Podcast and spoke about the new strategy with Revo and what's ahead. The focus now is on reintroducing people to the brand. They may remember it from decades ago, but now the company is trying to get front and center. With that, it's been working with athletes -- including the U.S. sailing team. According to Robinson, Revo has always had the chance to become a true eyewear leader. "We felt there was this really great opportunity to breathe some additional life -- breathe some additional TLC -- and really make Revo the independent brand that it had been previously," he said.
