Happy Monday, Film Friends! That's right, we are trying on a Mon-Wed-Fri schedule because we have so many exciting talks to share with you all! Brazilian filmmaker Tôka wrote and directed the film “Nauru,” a remarkable film that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Sci-Fi at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2024. In fact, the film took home five awards, including Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Supporting Performer. “Nauru” is a proof of concept for a feature script that Tôka wrote, which is good news because the world he created in “Nauru” deserves to be explored much further. Tôka lives in London today and hopped onto Zoom to have this conversation with me. After seeing a film as well-written and visually stunning as “Nauru,” I had been looking forward to this talk for most of 2024. We managed to get on Zoom together in December and now you get to listen to it in 2025! "Dune: Part Two" was one of 2024's biggest films critically, financially, and now, awards-wise, as it's on a similar run as the first film was in 2021 through early 2022. First, we have my interview with Academy Award-nominated Director, Co-Writer and Producer Denis Villeneuve, followed by Brendan Hodges's conversation with Academy Award-winning Cinematographer Greig Fraser, then we have Giovanni Lago's interview with Academy Award-winning Costume Designer Jacqueline West, then we have Dan Bayer's interview with Academy Award-winning Production Designer Patrice Vermette and Set Decorator Shane Vieau, followed by my interviews with Academy Award-winning Film Editor Joe Walker, Academy-Award winning sound team consisting of Supervising Sound Editor & Sound Designer Richard King, and Re-Recording Mixers Ron Bartlett and Doug Hemphill, and then we end on my conversation with Academy Award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor Paul Lambert. Margo is joined by Annie Atkins, a graphic designer and legendary prop maker for film and television. She is known for her work with Wes Anderson on The Grand Budapest Hotel, which won the Academy Award for Best Production Design at the 87th Academy Awards. Since then, she has worked again with Wes Anderson on Isle of Dogs and The French Dispatch as well as on Steven Speilberg's West Side Story and Bridge of Spies. Annie's first book, Fake Love Letters, Forged Telegrams, and Prison Escape Maps, was published in 2020 by Phaidon. In her first children's book, Letters From The North Pole, five children from all around the world write to Santa Claus with ideas for Christmas gifts and are amazed when he writes back! Through five letters from Santa that children can pull out and read, the hidden world of the North Pole is revealed, from how reindeer can sleep standing up to what snacks Santa would like left out on Christmas Eve, and how he gets round the world so quickly. This is a nostalgic and festive tale, reminiscent of the classic The Jolly Postman and Annie's iconic work on such films as The Grand Budapest Hotel. Set and Production designer Shona Heath creates enchanting, dense, and detailed worlds. Dreams within themselves, her visions have been manifested across the pages of top publications, and in collaborative partnerships with the likes of Tim Walker, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Prada, Miu Miu, and SHOWstudio. Her style seamlessly blends contemporary and vintage elements, showcasing a unique, fantastical aesthetic—brought to life through paper sculpting, painting, photography, and prop-building. Most recently, her work on Yorgos Lanthimos's 2023 film Poor Things won an Academy Award for Best Production Design. In an age of worldbuilding, Heath shares a journey from the countryside to imagining entire realms, underlining that creativity plays a role in designing our everyday lives. Episode Highlights: Growing up in the British countryside in a modern sixties home, Heath remembers an upbringing spent outdoors, where she became intrigued with visions of scale; her mother's crafts were also a deep influence. She started her career in costume design and was moved to create a set from paper for Dazed, which turned into requests for shop windows and later collaborations with Tim Walker. Heath's creative process begins with words or an image, but usually, the former encourages original image-making and visualizing. She sees tools like AI as potentially good research tools but detrimental to her own particular craft; its use depends on the artist and their authenticity. She recommends working independently rather than starting as an assistant to an established artist, as then you know how to forge your own path first. Though she used to feel that she experienced “excessive input” when doing a project, she now feels she can better communicate her vision and appease clients and collaborators up front. She prefers the immediacy and direct access of working in photography to working on film sets; Heath remarks she wouldn't be interested in doing a period piece that didn't have an added element of creativity like Poor Things—a film she worked on with James Price, whose decades of film expertise Heath leaned on. Fashion's tendency for retro revisits and zeitgeist trends plays well into her work (as opposed to interior design, which she says has more of a lag time between trends and the trend's appearance in the culture). Her work on Poor Things won her an Academy Award for Best Production Design. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sean Comer and Mark Radulich present our The Great Gatsby 2013 Movie Review! The Great Gatsby is a 2013 American historical romantic drama film based on the 1925 novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The film was co-written and directed by Baz Luhrmann and stars an ensemble cast consisting of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Amitabh Bachchan, and Elizabeth Debicki. Filming took place from September to December 2011 in Australia, with a $105 million net production budget. The film follows the life and times of millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio) and his neighbor Nick Carraway (Maguire) who recounts his interactions with Gatsby amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age on Long Island in New York.A polarizing film among critics, The Great Gatsby received both praise and criticism for its visual style, direction, screenplay, performances, soundtrack, and its interpretation of the source material. Audiences responded more positively, and Fitzgerald's granddaughter praised the film, stating "Scott would have been proud." As of 2023, it is Luhrmann's highest-grossing film, grossing over $353 million worldwide. At the 86th Academy Awards, the film won in both of its nominated categories: Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76

On episode 218 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson and AwardsWatch contributor Dan Bayer to give their 2024 BAFTA predictions and talk about their favorite romantic comedies. Before getting into the meat of this week's show, there was major Oscar news this past week, as the Academy announced the addition of a brand new category for the 2025/2026 season, Best Casting. While there is a lot of speculation as to the rules of this new category, but this is a welcome addition to the Oscar lineup. The gang speculate what they want to hear from the Academy when they announce the specifics to their new category in April 2025. Moving onto the awards talk, the guys talk about the recent wins at the DGA and ADG awards ceremonies from this past weekend, which saw not only Christopher Nolan get closer to an Oscar win for Best Director, but a real race for Best Production Design between Poor Things, Oppenheimer, and Barbie. This led right into the BAFTA predictions conversation, which could open up the race and lead to some surprises from this overseas voting body that has a big cross over with the Academy. Films like Oppenheimer, Poor Things should do well, with The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers and All of Us Strangers looking to play spoiler in a few categories. Winners will be handed out next weekend and we will discuss them on next week's show. Then in the back half of the episode, as Valentine's Day rolls around this coming week, Ryan, Erik and Dan discuss their favorite romantic comedies. They talk about what they love about the genre, what makes them work, some of their favorite films and memorable theater experiences seeing them, as well as what they would like to see going forward when it comes to rom-coms. Some of the films discussed included My Big Fat Greek Wedding, When Harry Met Sally, Moonstruck, Bottoms, Fire Island, Annie Hall, Harold and Maude, The Shop Around the Corner, Sleepless in Seattle, and so many more. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h53m. On our next episode, we will be giving our reactions to the BAFTA awards, as well as give our predictions to the SAG Awards and talk about the latest film from Ethan Coen, Drive-Away Dolls. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

Coraline is a dark fantasy horror children's novel by British author Neil Gaiman. Gaiman started writing Coraline in 1990, and it was published in 2002 by Bloomsbury and HarperCollins. It was awarded the 2003 Hugo Award for Best Novella, the 2003 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 2002 Bram Stoker Award for Best Work for Young Readers. The Guardian ranked Coraline #82 in its list of 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. It was adapted as a 2009 stop-motion animated film, directed by Henry Selick under the same name. Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion animated dark fantasy horror film written and directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman's novella of the same name. Produced by Laika as the studio's first feature film, it features the voice talents of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., and Ian McShane. The film tells the story of its titular character discovering an idealized parallel universe behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that it contains a dark and sinister secret. Just as Gaiman was finishing his novella in 2002, he met Selick and invited him to make a film adaptation, as Gaiman was a fan of Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. When Selick thought that a direct adaptation would lead to "maybe a 47-minute movie", the screenplay had some expansions, like the introduction of Wybie, who was not present in the original novel. Selick invited Japanese illustrator Tadahiro Uesugi to become the concept artist upon discovering his work when looking for a design away from that of most animation. His biggest influences were on the colour palette, which was muted in reality and more colourful in the Other World, similar to The Wizard of Oz. To capture stereoscopy for the 3D release, the animators shot each frame from two slightly apart camera positions. Production of the stop-motion animation feature took place at a warehouse in Hillsboro, Oregon. Bruno Coulais composed the film's musical score. The film was theatrically released in the United States on February 6, 2009 by Focus Features after a world premiere at the Portland International Film Festival on February 5, and received critical acclaim. The film grossed $16.85 million during its opening weekend, ranking third at the box office, and by the end of its run had grossed over $124 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time after Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. The film won Annie Awards for Best Music in an Animated Feature Production, Best Character Design in an Animated Feature Production and Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production and received nominations for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. It has since developed a cult following in the years since its release. Project Links; https://www.facebook.com/InVisibility-Productions-LLC-603177273481771/ https://www.twitter.com/josef_steiff https://www.instagram.com/josefsteiff "Jesse James" traces the moments between a neighbor's phone call and the arrival of the police, when Jesse and his lover test the boundaries of their relationship and come face to face not just with what they are losing but with what they have already lost -- when Jesse can no longer save his relationship but only himself. Director Statement “Write what you know.” That's the mantra, right? When I started film school, “Jesse James” was the story I knew. The story I had to tell. The story I had the experience to tell. But I wasn't ready. I wasn't ready to talk about my first boyfriend. So instead I made films about the VietNam War, AIDS, sexual assault. Until now. Last year, I published an account of the event at the core of “Jesse James” in the creative nonfiction journal Hinterland (“Flashpoint”). Watching this film in the editing room, my face burns hot with shame and vulnerability. Even after all these years, those feelings remain closer to the surface than I could imagine. Just as in heterosexual relationships, domestic violence in queer relationships is often hidden, at least until it can be no longer. My hope is that “Jesse James” serves as a reminder that love is complex and complicated; that domestic violence among gay couples does exist even if it is not readily visible. "Jesse James" weaves Greek mythology with other types of cultural stories, such as the fable of Jack and the Beanstalk and the outlaw west of Jesse James. These allusions form a child-like world as the young boy in the film might perceive it, but just as it is in those fairytales and legends, the world is fraught with danger and risk. More importantly, it is a world where strength and goodness can prevail. Film playing on the Film Festival Streaming service later this month. THIS WEEK ON THE 4:30 MOVIE, the below-the-line must be drawn here and no further for "THE CATEGORIES OSCAR FORGOT WEEK" as we fete the craftspeople the Academy won't as we curate a week of Oscar nominees in the categories of BEST EDITING, BEST MAKE-UP & HAIRSTYLING, BEST SCORE, BEST SOUND and BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN to rectify the infuriating and short-sighted decision to give these categories the high hat by banishing their live presentation to the ABC pre-show. As always, your favorite co-hosts (and caped crusaders) are back including MARK A. ALTMAN (showrunner, PANDORA, author, THE SECRETS OF THE FORCE, THE FIFTY-YEAR MISSION, THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE KILLED HIS DOG), STEVEN MELCHING (writer, MAGIC: THE GATHERING, THE CLONE WARS, REBELS), ASHLEY E. MILLER (showrunner; DOTA: DRAGON'S BLOOD; writer, THOR, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) and DAREN R. DOCHTERMAN (concept designer; WESTWORLD, MASTER & COMMANDER). NEXT WEEK: It's GET TO THE CHOPPER NOW WEEK as we curate an all-new fantasy theme week devoted to the films of Arnold Schwarzenegger. In the newest episode of The Cinematic Schematic, hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman return to continue the annual Oscar predictions episode for our fourth year. Let's admit it. The Academy has struggled to stay relevant in the mainstream for at least the last decade which has led to frequent programming shakeups for better and (mostly) worse and the 94th Academy Awards is no exception. Firstly, the decision was made recently that not all categories would be airing live during the telecast ceremony for the 94th Academy Awards. Eight awards including Best Documentary (Short Subject), Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Short Film (Animated), Best Short Film (Live Action), and Best Sound, will instead be presented an hour before the telecast ceremony and then edited into the live broadcast. Secondly, a hotly discussed show item is always “will there be a host and if so, who should it be?” Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall were announced to be the host, alongside many other celebrity presenters. Lastly, how could we forget what is perhaps the most blatant (desperate?) attempt to draw in mainstream audiences, the “Oscar Fan Favorite” category. Love it […] The post Oscar Predictions 2022 for The 94th Academy Awards – The Cinematic Schematic appeared first on The Cinematropolis.
