It's incredibly stressful work and presents a whole bunch of moral greys to think about! We follow with a light discussion on what art is, how art isn't always happy and can confront and challenge our beliefs, (while poking some gentle fun at sportsball watchers.)

S.P.C.A.C. (Seriously Pointless Conversations About Culture)

Do you enjoy looking at the tiny little details and then rubber stamping the form DENIED! when one little thing is out of place? James and I delve into the wonderfully simple, yet ultimately complicated world of bureaucracy, in this week's review of Papers, Please. This game came out of left field, with the simple idea of what if you were a immigration officer in a dystopian country? Seems simple right, you are very wrong. This game starts slow but slowly lets the tension build through each stage until you can feel the anxiety in your bones.  But in a fun way. We also talk some gaming news, most notably  the upcoming Xbox Game Pass list for this August and then Nintendo going after the little guy, who's just trying to illegally sell their old games.   Check it all out in this week's episode. Ecco, questo suo gioco "As if you were doing work", è come se stessi lavorando, è esattamente così. Anche di questo metterò il link nelle note del programma.ENGLISH TRANSLATIONImagine a video game that shows you the bloody Windows screens when a lot of pop-ups open, emails, notifications, etc. arrive. That's what Pippin Barr, whom I consider a philosopher rather than a game creator, did. He started by considering how the technology we use to work, increasingly tries to resemble video games to make our work more enjoyable, and he does exactly the opposite, takes the games and makes them look more like work, the same tasks that, as often happens in life, we perform without even realizing why we are doing them, like when the computer asks us to do things that we do not know why it is asking us, but we must perform them if we want to proceed with the our job, otherwise it won't allow us to proceed, I think about all the system updates and things like that. Well, in his game "It is as if you were doing work", it is exactly like that. A screen opens, in the style of the Windows 2000 computer, and the computer then asks you to do things, but you get continually interrupted and you will never be able to complete the required tasks, so you spend all the time in the game arguing with the computer interface. Pippin Barr makes these games very funny, very ironic. Another one he created is the one, there is an entire series dedicated to the myths of ancient Greece, there is this game which is called Sisyphus, and consists of this gentleman, Sisyphus, pushing a gigantic boulder over the mountain and when he gets to the top of the mountain, boom! it rolls down and then he can start infinitely again. Another very interesting game is the one that refers to the happening done by Marina Abramovic at MOMA, very famous: the artist Marina Abramovic stayed I don't remember how many days at MOMA, 8, 9 hours every day, sitting at a table while people stood in line to be allowed to look deeply into her eyes. Well, Pippin Barr's game proposes this again but it's about queueing to enter MOMA and we cannot get distracted because every now and then the game asks us to do things, like take a step forward, and if we do not obey we lose our place in line and we have to start again. There is a beautiful interview with Pippin Barr in the unmissable “We Make Money Not Art” newsletter by Regine Debatty, I will put the link in the program's notes, and among other things, Pippin Barr talks about one of my favorite video games ever, let's say my second favourite after The Stanley Parable, he speaks about Paper Please, which is a game where you pretend to be a border officer in an Eastern European country and you put stamps on people's papers when they ask to enter or exit or to cross the border. Of this too I will put the link in the notes of the program. Here you can listen to the podcast in Italian while reading the translation in English MAGIC!https://youtu.be/mc-yCMHKPgU

Papers, Please is aptly summed up by its marketing tagline: "A dystopian document thriller". Everything that can go wrong will go wrong in this 'simulation' of being a border crossing agent in the clearly-Soviet-in-all-but-name Arstotzka.Morality and shades of gray are front in center in this puzzle game, but transparency of choice is not; what you do may make be ethical but its outcomes vary wildly in the face of a political system so obfuscated as to be completely labyrinthine. Papers, Please does more to simulate the atmosphere of Soviet politik than even a good read of Solzhenitsyn, but that isn't just why it's popular: it's also a darn strong puzzle game.Relevant links!Document types in the gameCaustic Soda, a podcast about gruesome or weird stuff by lovable CanadiansRelevant games! The Westport Incident by Double Zero One Zero (the newspaper version of Papers, PleaseThe Tomorrow Children by Q-GamesCalm Down, Stalin by Cartboard Games (no, not Cardboard Computer)This War of Mine by 11 bit studiosEkranoplans, by Russia Itself, GiantBomb'd hereThe entire Metro series by 4AThe theme this week is "Duck Wings Going Down in Smoke and Flames" by Duck Boy, a free album download from chipmusic.org off of his new album Unknown Command.
