Who Made Who? Today, we read an essay by the sainted Rev. Dr. John Kleinig about what makes a theologian. Dr. Kleinig explains Martin Luther's threefold description of how the master of theology, the Holy Spirit, makes one a theologian through contemplative prayer, meditating on Scripture within the communion of saints, and being translated into the kingdom of heaven by God's Word—all this and much more on this week's episode of the podcast. The Rev. Dr. Scott Stiegemeyer is Associate Professor of Theology and Bioethics at Concordia University Irvine; previously, he served as parish pastor of congregations near Pittsburgh, Pa., and Chicago, Ill. In this Kitchen Table Talk conversation, Dr. Stiegmeyer answers burning questions about gender identity and sexuality in biblical Lutheran perspective.   What is gender? Is it real? Who gets to define it? How do we define gender vs. Sexuality (or is it even “versus” situation)? What does the Bible teach us about gender and sexuality? What makes our current cultural moment so panic-inducing for biblical Christians? How can Lutherans guard young people from false teaching about gender identity— and lovingly speak God's truth about the beauty of his plan for sexuality to those around them?   “The male / female binary within humanity is beautiful, it's good, and it's true,” says Dr. Steigemeyer. “We should marvel at how God has created us to be and that [our marriage relationships] can be fruitful and ... self-giving.”  Resources referenced in this episode include the following:   Wonderfully Made: A Protestant Theology of the Body by the Rev. Rev. Dr. John Kleinig, professor emeritus of Australian Lutheran Collge in Adelaide, South Australia, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Hebrews 1:1-4. The anonymity of the author of Hebrews ends up reinforcing one of the primary points of the book. Understanding Hebrews more as a sermon for the Divine Service rather than as a letter, we see that the pastor doesn't desire the congregation to hear his own voice. He wants the congregation to hear the voice of God Himself. Although God's voice has spoken in a variety of ways through the prophets, now God speaks finally and completely in His Son, Jesus. It is to Jesus' voice that the preacher directs his congregation's attention, for Jesus is the exalted Son of God who is superior to the angels. “The New Covenant in Christ” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Hebrews. The book of Hebrews is best understood as a sermon preached to those who have gathered for the Divine Service, exhorting them to continued faithfulness to Jesus. As the Son of God and our Brother, Jesus is both our exalted King and faithful High Priest who is truly present with us so that we might fix our eyes on Him.

What exactly is contemplation and contemplative prayer? Is it new age nonsense or does it lie at the very heart of the Christian life?  And if, as we argue in this episode, it's the latter, how exactly does the average Joe "do" it?!  In this episode Brandon interviews Dr. John Kleinig of the Australian Lutheran Church tackle all these questions and a few more. Dr. Kleinig holds a Ph.D from Cambridge and is the author of several books on the topic of prayer in the Lutheran tradition. Together he and Brandon take a deep dive into the biblical model of contemplation from the Lutheran perspective.  This is the first of a series of conversations on the topic of contemplation with experts and practitioners from across the Christian and religious spectrum. What kinds of things can go amiss in our lives when we have an improper or incomplete theological understanding of the body? How does a solidly biblical theology of the body help us better think through what it means to be a human being—and a woman of God? And where do we go from there? Touching on issues including chastity, birth control, marriage and singleness, Christian friendship, virtual church, sacramental worship, life after death, and more, this conversation will challenge and inspire you to a new and deeper gratitude for God's gift of embodied life. In this excerpt from their March 25 book club recap episode, the Ladies announce their next pick for the Lutheran Ladies' Book Club: the Rev. Dr. John Kleinig's Wonderfully Made: A Protestant Theology of the Body. From the publisher: "When it comes to thinking about our bodies, confusion reigns. In our secular age, there has been a loss of the body's goodness, purpose, and end. Many people, driven by shame and idolatry, abuse their body through self-harm or self-improvement. How can we renew our understanding and see our bodies the way God does? "In Wonderfully Made, John Kleinig forms a properly biblical theology of our bodies. Through his keen sensitivity to Scripture's witness, Kleinig explains why bodies matter. While sin has corrupted our bodies and how we think of them, God's creation is still good. Thus, our bodies are good gifts. The Son took on a body to redeem our bodies. Kleinig addresses issues like shame, chastity, desire, gender dysphoria, and more, by integrating them into the biblical vision of creation." 2.Moos.19:12; 2.Sam.6:6-7). Onkin ihmeellistä kuulla, että nyt meillä ”on pääsy” toisin sanoen, lupa käydä sisään kaikkeinpyhimpään! Sehän tarkoittaa, että jokainen Kristuksen oma saa tulla suoraan Isän Jumalan eteen, hänen läsnäoloonsa ilman, että Jumalan pyhyys lyö häntä maahan. Vanhassa liitossa vain ylimmäisellä papilla oli suurena sovituspäivänä lupa puhdistauduttuaan mennä Jerusalemin temppelin kaikkeinpyhimpään uhraamaan (3.Moos.16.). Uudessa liitossakin vain ylimmäinen, täydellinen pappi on kelvollinen astumaan Isän eteen. Tuo ylimmäinen pappi on Jeesus Kristus, joka todella on mennyt kaikkeinpyhimpään, ei Jerusalemin temppelin kaikkeinpyhimpään, vaan taivaallisen temppelin. Ja koska Jeesus on puhtaana ja synnittömänä ylimmäisenä pappina Isän edessä, on meillä häneen ja hänen vereensä liitettyinä sanan kautta, kasteessa, ja ehtoollisessa syntien anteeksiantamus (Ef.1:17), täydellinen puhdistus (1.Joh.1:7) ja avoin pääsy taivaallisen majesteetin eteen, hänen valtaistuimensa eteen, hänen läsnäoloonsa – taivaalliseen kaikkeinpyhimpään. Kristus on siis ovi (Joh.10:9) – avoin taivaan ovi Isän tykö hyvin todellisessa merkityksessä. Australialainen luterilainen professori ja teologian tohtori, John Kleinig opettaa Hebrealaiskirjeen kommentaarissaan, että tässä mainittu ”luja luottamus” (kreik. parreesia), joka meillä Kristuksen veressä on, tarkoittaa oikeastaan ”sananvapautta”, oikeutta puhua julkisesti. Hän kirjoittaa: ”Se tarkoittaa sananvapautta, vapautta osoittaa pyyntö valtaapitävälle henkilölle, oikeutta päästä sisään, rohkeutta lähestyä valtaapitävää henkilöä. (Ef.3:12; Hepr.3:6; 4:16; 10:35). Meillä on oikeus avoimeen pääsyyn Isän Jumalan läsnäoloon itse taivaaseen. Jumalanpalveluksessa taivas on maan päällä, meidän jumalanpalvelusalttarimme on salatulla tavalla yhdistetty Jumalan taivaalliseen valtaistuimeen. Näin Jumala on sanansa ja nimensä kautta todella läsnä temppelissään. ”… Joka paikassa, mihin minä säädän nimeni muiston, minä tulen sinun tykösi ja siunaan sinua” (2.Moos.20:24b). Sanassa ja sakramenteissa on edestämme kuollut ja ylösnoussut Kristus todella kanssamme ja jakaa uhrinsa lahjat. Sanan kautta vaikuttaa Pyhä Henki uskoa ja elämää synnyttäen. Saamme Kristukseen kastettuina astua Jumalan läsnäoloon jumalanpalveluksessa, sillä meidät on siinä Kristuksen veri puhdistanut, antanut hyvän omantunnon ja uskon, sekä avannut tuon taivaan meille avoimeksi.

Rev. Dr. John Kleinig, professor emeritus of Australian Lutheran College, Adelaide, SA and author of the Concordia Commentary on Leviticus joins Rev. Brady Finnern to begin our study on Leviticus. Find this Concordia Commentary at cph.org/p-681-Leviticus-Concordia-Commentary.aspx. “Why would you study Leviticus?” many of us ask. Yet, as we begin this new study of a commonly unknown book we learn of the main focus: “God's holiness given to His people.” God calls us to holiness, promises holiness in the future, and makes us holy now. God speaks to His people about the dangers of impurity, but then promises to give His holiness to us in the Divine Service. God declares, “I am the LORD, who sanctifies you (Leviticus 19:2).” We once again look to Him who makes us holy by His Word and see Christ. “Lord God, make us holy as You are holy. By the Word and by the blood of Christ You make us clean and share Your life giving holiness with us. Fill us by Your Holy Spirit as we study Leviticus and help us to grow in faith. In Christ. Amen” Thy Strong Word reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations.

Dr. John Kleinig joins Matt and Alastair to discuss a Biblical approach to a theology of the body. More specifically, they talk about how we can acquire the vision with which God sees our bodies. Some questions that they cover are how ritual trains the body, what the significance of the body is in Protestant theology, and why Jesus's physical body is so emphasized in the Gospels. Dr. Kleinig's latest book also focuses on these issues. (There's also a particularly spectacular +1 that you can hear if you are one of the Merrie Band of Patreon supporters.) Rev. Dr. John Kleinig, professor emeritus of Australian Lutheran College in Adelaide, SA, Australia, and author of the Concordia Commentary on Hebrews joins Rev. Brady Finnern to begin our study of Hebrews. Find the Concordia Commentary on Hebrews at cph.org/p-30884-Hebrews-Concordia-Commentary.aspx. We often think of the benefits that we WILL receive in heaven, which is true. Yet, the author to the Hebrews emphasizes all the gifts of heaven that we receive now. Jesus, the Great High Priest, brings cleansing, atonement, the Holy Spirit, blessing, heavenly food, and grace to His people now by His Word. As we begin our study on Hebrews, we get a picture of heaven by seeing the Tabernacle of the Old Testament connected to the better covenant that we have today in Christ. “Lord Jesus, as You are the great High Priest, we ask for Your cleansing by Your blood that we may draw near with confidence Your throne of grace upon grace. Lord have mercy. Amen”

Lutherans have a difficult time occasionally in preaching to the whole person. In this episode, Scott and Todd try to unpack what it means to preach the text in a way that engages the mind, the body, the heart, and the imagination. This conversation goes from Dr. John Kleinig to Minecraft and the modern fascination with world building games. At the end, there is also a long overdue mention of the Pope.
