The lands controlled by the Emperor were divided among Lutherans and Catholics. They disagreed on doctrine and did not get along with one another. Charles V, the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, called for a meeting between the Pope's theologians and the Lutheran reformers because he wanted to put this "silly" religious disagreement behind him, so he could get on with the important matter of the day -- uniting the empire for a military battle against the Muslim Turks.Charles called a diet -- a meeting -- in the German city of Augsburg. The night before the Lutherans were to present their confession of faith, Emperor Charles and his brother Ferdinand, the King of Austria, met privately with the Lutheran princes. They ordered the Lutheran princes to forbid any Lutheran preaching in Augsburg during the meeting. They also commanded the Lutherans to attend the Catholic Corpus Christi -- the Body of Christ -- festival the next day with the Emperor.George, Margrave of Brandenburg, spoke boldly for the Lutherans. He refused to concede to Charles' demands, saying, "Before I let anyone take from me the Word of God and ask me to deny my God, I will kneel and let them strike off my head."The Emperor was clearly taken aback by George's boldness. Charles sputtered in broken German, "Not cut off head, dear prince. Not cut off head." (Introduction to the Augsburg Confession, Book of Concord, p. 25).On June 25, 1530, a group of faithful Lutheran princes and electors met in Augsburg, Germany, to present the confession of their faith to the Emperor. This was a time in the Roman Catholic Church when the Papacy was a superpower, and dissent was handled at the stake or at the rack. All the efforts of reform by previous reformers had fallen on deaf ears or resulted in death. But, by the grace of God, this Lutheran Reformation was turning out differently.The Emperor and the Pope had the power to arrest and kill anyone who disagreed with them. The Lutherans decided there was only one thing to do -- confess. These were not theologians that were standing before the Emperor. They were courageous Lutheran laymen -- like yourselves. They confessed their faith and told the Emperor and the Roman Church what they believed, taught, and confessed. They relied on the promise of God's Word, as contained in Psalm 119:46, "Then I will speak of your testimonies before kings, and I will not be put to shame." The Augsburg Confession was presented as a statement of biblical truth and a proposal for true unity in the Christian faith. It has never been withdrawn or found in error.This confession caused a stir as soon as it was read. The Bishop of Augsburg, who was faithful to the Pope and in whose palace it was read, said that it was all true and could not be denied. One of the princes who was loyal to the Pope asked the Pope's head theologian if it could be refuted. Dr. Eck replied: "I can't refute it using only Scripture." The prince was stunned and asked: "Do you mean to say that these Lutherans sit inside Scripture, and we outside?"All of us -- pastors and people -- are to make bold confessions of our faith. St. Paul puts it this way, "Fight the good fight of faith" (1 Timothy 6:11). Faith alone makes us Christians. Confession alone marks us as Christians. St. Paul describes the relationship between believing and confessing, "Certainly, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and it is with the mouth that a person confesses, resulting in salvation" (Romans 10:9-10).Jesus also says, "Everyone who confesses me before others, I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 10:32). Our confession of sins may be private, but there is no such thing as a private confession of faith. Our confession of the Christian faith is public for the whole world to hear.In our Epistle lesson, St. Paul gives four clear charges of confession for the battlefield to young Pastor Timothy and all Christians -- Flee. Pursue. Fight. Seize.First, we flee. St. Paul encourages, "But you, O man of God, flee from these things" (1 Timothy 6:11). What are these things we to flee from? Paul tells us in the previous verses, "Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into complete destruction and utter ruin. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evils. By striving for money, some have wandered away from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains" (1 Timothy 6:9-10).Spiritual warfare is not fight or flight; it is fight and flight. We do battle with temptation, but we also do our best to avoid temptation altogether. Paul warns that we are too often distracted by the want of more money. It's a trap that we easily fall into. We feel we need two incomes, our kids need to be in every expensive sport, and our family needs all the latest toys, gadgets, and vehicles. All these things can cause us to wander away from the church, personal Bible reading, and family prayer. We end up squandering our Christian faith.Paul says elsewhere, "Do not give any thought to satisfying the desires of your sinful flesh" (Romans 13:14). Jesus says that, if necessary, we are to cut off our hand our gouge out our eye if the offending body part is causing us to sin (Matthew 5:29-30). This means we go to extraordinary lengths to flee the sin we know would ruin us.Spiritual warfare, however, is not only fight and flight, but also pursuit. "Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness" (1 Timothy 6:11). These virtues directly counteract the greed and pride we are to flee from. Righteousness, godliness, and faith focus on our relationship with God. Love and gentleness are putting our faith into action. Perseverance is endurance under pressure.Fellow reformers, are you pursuing faith in Jesus -- not just keeping faith, but pursuing faith? Are you making time each day to be alone with God in his Word? Are you weaving prayer into the unique rhythms of your life? Are you committed to Lord of Lords, and intentionally looking for ways to grow and serve here? Are you asking God to show you other creative ways you might pursue these Christian virtues?Third, we fight. "Fight the good fight of the faith" (1 Timothy 6:12). Whom or what are we fighting? Too often we get caught up fighting with each other over politics, sports or culture. Satan loves to pit us against each other. Those are all silly temporal things. The fight is not against people, but against sin, unbelief, false doctrine, paganism, Satan and his demons.How can a fight be good? Usually, fighting is bad. We encourage our kids not to fight. Just as there are "Just Wars," so there are times for righteous fighting. We are fighting God's enemies who are coming after us, our families, and our churches.Fight the good fight. You cannot change the world by being complacent. The only way to be in shape to fight is by daily training. But we like to sit on our couches binging Netflix and playing on our phones. That's not fighting the good fight. That's not even getting training for the fight. The good fight of faith is the constant battle in this world between God and Satan, between truth and falsehood, between the new nature and the sinful flesh.Fourth, we seize the new life God has given us. "Take hold of eternal life, to which you were called and about which you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses" (1 Timothy 6:12). "Taking hold of eternal life" means living in the present reality of our future inheritance. It's gripping Christ's promises so tightly that the temporary distractions of this world lose their grip on us. We live every day as God's confident saints. We know the prize of eternal life is already ours. Christ has already won it for us. Now we're just finishing the contest of this life. We live never being afraid to witness or live righteously or oppose evil because we know we're the winners. The unbelievers who are teasing, trashing, and taunting us are all losers!Paul writes, "I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who made a good confession as a witness before Pontius Pilate" (1 Timothy 6:13). Why bring up Pilate here? As the Roman governor, Pilate held earthly power of life and death, yet Jesus boldly confessed the truth of his kingdom. Paul reminds us that facing hostile cultural or political authorities is the standard setting for Christ's servants. Jesus is the example of making a bold confession as he faced death. More than that, Jesus' bold confession covers over our weak, feeble, or non-existent confessions.Paul anchors this charge to "the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Timothy 6:14). Christ's second coming on Judgment Day provides eternal perspective. Daily frustrations, lack of visible results, and criticism shrink in significance when compared to the fast-approaching day of Christ's return. When we feel beaten down and lowly, we need to remember that Jesus Christ is going to be returning in all power, majesty, and glory.Moses and the prophets, the apostles and early Christians, Luther and his fellow reformers, knew that Jesus' words would come true, "Do not think that I came to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10:34). We as twenty-first century Christians and modern-age reformers certainly do not go looking for trouble -- enough trouble will find us. It's been said that where Christ builds a church, the Devil builds a chapel. Wherever the gospel is proclaimed, Satan must attack. Wherever we soldiers of Christ lift high the cross, Satan's minions inflict pain and pressure. Wherever Christ reigns as King, this world's prince still scowls.We may not fear beheading, loss of property, imprisonment, or death like other Christians in centuries past or Christians suffering presently around the world. We don't fear a den of lions or a fiery furnace, but persecution abounds when we're faithful to the Word. We lose relationships because of a Biblical belief that honors the sanctity of marriage. We lose promotions because of worship priorities. We lose friendships because we won't join in sinful talking or walking. Jesus says we will lose family relationships because of our connection to him, "I came to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man's enemies will be the members of his own household" (Matthew 10:35-36).Don't be fooled into faintheartedness. Don't be coerced into cowardice. Don't be scared into silence. As you allow the Holy Spirit to reform your former sinful way of life, expect derision and insults. As you work with God's Word to reform the world, expect hatred and persecution.Also expect help from your gracious Lord, the Shepherd of helpless and hapless sheep. Even as we stand on trial for our beliefs, we are witnesses to our enemies. Even as we are arrested and persecuted, the Holy Spirit is giving us the boldness to speak clearly. Luther concludes his Battle Hymn of the Reformation: "And do what they will -- hate, steal, hurt or kill -- though all may be gone, our victory is won; the kingdom's ours forever!"There is nothing to fear. Yes, there will be kings, emperors, and popes who will join together against the Lord. But St. John also assures us that these kings, rulers, and governing authorities "will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them, because he is Lord of Lords and King of Kings" (Revelation 17:14). Flee. Pursue. Fight. Seize. Be like those early reformers who stood up to an emperor with the Augsburg Confession. Boldly confess Christ before kings, courts, and councils. "Fight the good fight of faith." Amen.

In dieser Folge bringen wir ein Interview mit der verhaltenstherapeutischen Psychotherapeutin Merle Kaiser aus Augsburg, Autorin des Buches Psychotherapeutische Grundversorgung in der Gruppe. Störungsübergreifend – verhaltenstherapeutisch – niederschwellig, erschienen 2025 im Junfermann-Verlag. Die psychotherapeutische Grundversorgung wurde während der Coronazeit als niederschwelliges, antragsfreies Angebot mit vier Sitzungen à 100 Minuten eingeführt. Frau Kaiser ist in eigener Praxis niedergelassen und bietet neben der gruppentherapeutischen Grundversorgung auch reguläre Gruppentherapien an. Sie berichtet, dass die psychotherapeutische Grundversorgung in der Gruppe die Hemmschwelle vor einer Gruppentherapie senkt und dass viele ihrer Patient:innen im Anschluss weiter Gruppentherapie machen. Schon in der ersten Stunde äußern Patient:innen häufig eine Entlastung, da ihre Isolation und Stigmatisierung dadurch nachlassen, dass sie merken, dass auch andere psychische Probleme haben. Im weiteren Verlauf des Interviews erläutert Frau Kaiser genauer ihr Konzept für die psychotherapeutische Grundversorgung, das hoch strukturiert ist und Elemente aus der Akzeptanz-Commitment-Therapie (ACT), der Dialektisch-Behavioralen Therapie (DBT) sowie den Themenkomplex Selbstgefühl enthält. Weitere Themen sind ihre Haltung zur Gruppendynamik, eine App für die Zeit zwischen den Sitzungen, die sie gerade entwickelt, die Akquise von Patient:innen und dass es hierfür hilfreich ist, Gruppentherapie mit mehr Selbstbewusstsein als ein Angebot der ersten Wahl darzustellen.

Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” Matthew 10:21-22,32 When Confessing Christ Costs You On June 25, 1530, Lutheran princes and representatives stood before Emperor Charles V in the city of Augsburg in Germany and presented a confession of their faith. The emperor was among the most powerful rulers in the world. The pressure to stay quiet, compromise, or soften the truth was enormous. But they confessed Christ. One of the signers was John Frederick of Saxony. A few years later, Emperor Charles V went to war against the Lutheran princes in an effort to force them back into submission. John Frederick’s own cousin Maurice of Saxony sided with the emperor and invaded John Frederick’s territory. John Frederick was eventually defeated, captured, sentenced to death, and stripped of his royal title. The details of history are complicated. The pain was not. Confessing Christ had cost him dearly, even within his own family. Jesus had warned his disciples that this could happen. “Brother will betray brother to death,” he said. “You will be hated by everyone because of me.” Following Jesus would not always bring peace with the people closest to them. Sometimes it would bring division, rejection, and loss. But Jesus also gave a promise: “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.” That promise gives courage. You may never stand before an emperor. You may never lose lands or titles for confessing Christ. But you will have moments when faithfulness costs you something. It may cost approval. It may strain a relationship. It may make you feel alone. In those moments, remember who stands with you. Jesus confessed you first. He claimed you as his own. He carried your sins to the cross. He rose from the dead. He speaks for you before the Father. So, confess him. Speak the truth humbly. Speak it lovingly. Speak it with confidence. The Savior you confess is the Savior who confesses you. Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for confessing me before your Father. Give me courage to confess you before others, even when it costs me. Amen. Daily Devotions is brought to you by WELS. Die Saison ist vorbei. Unions Männer sind 11. der Bundesliga, Unions Frauen 9. der Bundesliga. Zwei Ergebnisse, die wir vor der Saison beide sofort genommen hätten, die doch auf unterschiedliche Art und Weise zäh und hart erkämpft werden mussten. Wir blicken zurück auf die beiden zurückliegenden Spiele gegen Augsburg und in Frankfurt und auf die Saison der Männer und der Frauen. Da wir diese Episode elegante ein wenig nach hinten geschoben haben, können wir auch noch über den neuen Cheftrainer der Männer, Mauro Lustrinelli, reden und ein bisschen die zurückliegende Mitgliederversammlung Revue passieren lassen. Leute, was war da los? Oben und unten, am Millerntor und auf der Alm, an der einen Tankstelle in Elversberg und bei den drei Fans des VfL Wolfsburg. Zittern und Hoffen bis zum Schloss, dann Jubeltrauben und Tränenbäder. Dazu Hochspannung fũr alle Hitchcocksucker. Herrlichster Hardcore. Mal wieder 90 Minuten echte Gefühle. Und weil das alles, die Dramen der Schlusssekunden und die Stimmen danach, gar nicht in einen Text passen, gibt es hier stattdessen acht Fakten zum Wahnsinn des Wochenendes. 1. Saïd El Mala erzielte in München den zwischenzeitlichen Anschlusstreffer der Kölner. Der 19jährige Angreifer traf sehenswert gegen den mittlerweile 40 Jahre alten Manuel Neuer. So! Und jetzt kommt's: El Mala wurde am 26. August 2006 geboren und damit genau eine Woche NACH Neuers Bundesliga-Debüt gegen Alemannia Aachen am 19. August 2006. 2. Bleiben wir noch kurz bei den Bayern. 122 Tore hat Kompanys Mannschaft am Ende geschossen. Der zweitbeste Wert in der Geschichte des europäischen Fußballs. Besser war lediglich die AC Turin in der Saison 1947/48. Die Italiener erzielten 125 Treffer, allerdings an 40 Spieltagen. 3. Vom besten Angriff zur besten Defensive der Liga. Durch das 2:0 in Bremen beendet der BVB seine Saison als Zweiter mit 73 Punkten. Nur zwei Mal in der Bundesliga-Geschichte hatte ein Vizemeister am Ende mehr Punkte auf dem Konto. Der BVB 2015/16 in der ersten Saison unter Tuchel mit 78 Punkten. Und der BVB 2018/19 in der ersten Saison unter Favre mit 76 Punkten. Es ist damit auch die fünftbeste Bundesligasaison des BVB. 4. Marie-Louise Eta hat sich mit einem 4:0 Heimsieg gegen Augsburg von den eigenen Fans verabschiedet. Damit ist sie die erste Interims-Cheftrainerin der Bundesliga-Geschichte, die sich mit einem 4:0-Heimsieg gegen Augsburg von den eigenen Fans verabschieden konnte. Rekord! 5. Alexander Ende hat die Zweitliga-Saison als Trainer in Münster begonnen und als Coach von Fortuna Düsseldorf beendet. Er ist damit gleich mit zwei Klubs in die dritte Liga abgestiegen. Wäre das nicht einer für die Hertha? 6. Der SC Freiburg hat gegen RB Leipzig sein 53. Pflichtspiel dieser Saison absolviert. Das Europa League Finale gegen Aston Villa wird demnach das 54. sein. Grund ist der lange und erfolgreiche Tanz auf allen Hochzeiten. Zum Vergleich: Gegner Leipzig kommt lediglich auf 38 Pflichtspiele. 7. Mickys Leipziger haben sich allerdings bereits für die Champions League qualifiziert. Im zehnten Jahr Bundesliga-Zugehörigkeit bereits zum achten Mal. Darauf eine Dose white Edition Kokos-Blaubeere. 8. St. Pauli ist nach der Heimniederlage gegen Wolfsburg abgestiegen. Vollkommen verdient. Selbst Sarah Engels hätte mehr Punkte geholt als diese Kacktruppe. Ich sag's wie's ist: lieber'n Ostsee-Wal als Hauke Wahl. Und all jenen, die sich trotz dieser prachtvollen Zahlenparade immer noch fragen, ob es denn gar nicht um Baden und Württemberg, um Nagelsmann und Neuer oder um die Bauern am Marienplatz ging, legen wir ans Herz, doch bitte die ganze Folge zu hören. Denn am Ende gibt es sogar noch ein filmreifes Ranking, mit Grätschen auf Celluloid. Frei nach dem Motto: Kein Mensch, kein Tier, die Nummer 10! Viel Spaß!

"I selected an area of the River Lech within the city of Augsburg, Bavaria. I was intrigued by the changing relationship between humans and river, and the different uses of the natural flowing water in this place. I discovered Augsburg is one of the oldest settled places in Germany (around 2000 years). This fuelled my imagination in considering the scale and scope of change- within both humanity, and the natural environment, that the river has borne witness to over time. I was really struck by the impact of human activity on the river, not least the disruption of its natural flow and use of the Lech for multiple hydro-power plants along its course. "I took a walk along several stretches of the water in and around Augsburg and my overwhelming sense was that it needed our care and attention and that we have a responsibility to the guardianship of its course. Within the composition I wanted to depict contrasting sensations that I felt portrayed something of the complexities of this stretch of river, its history, its present and its future, including flux, chaos, beauty, dischord/disharmony and solidarity. "Working with my long-standing collaborator and dear friend, we shared ideas and musical parts back and forth, and spoke about different aspects of the piece, and slowly over quite some time, the elements that seeemed to belong, began to emerge. "Cuando el cauce recuerda (When the riverbed remembers) is a piece created for the Flow project, within Cities and Memory, which in this edition focuses on exploring the presence and memories of water in different territories. The work stems from a field recording made on the Lech River, on the outskirts of Augsburg. It is in this stretch of the river where the landscape opens up again: the riverbed reclaims space and its sound expands."The work is situated in a sonic territory that navigates between soundscape and electroacoustic music and suggests, through an everyday moment—a scene of encounter between nature, industrial memory, and community life—that it constitutes the initial material of the composition."The field recording underwent a spectral analysis process that allowed for the separation of different sound components. Each of these layers was subsequently transformed using various sound processing and synthesis techniques, including temporal stretching, filtering, and spectral manipulations. From these operations, new textures, densities, and perspectives of the original material emerged, generating an expanded auditory field."Rather than simply reconstructing the place in a documentary style, the piece seeks to explore its latent resonances. Processed fragments of the river and the sound of voices are transformed into sound currents themselves, revealing invisible or inaudible layers of the environment."In this sense, water appears as a form of song that is heard again after having been silenced. "Assigned the section of the Lech that crosses from Austria into Germany, I decided to travel to the area (near the city of Füssen) to listen to the river myself. I visited on the last Saturday of January, when the sun was shining over the (still very present) snow on the banks of the river. "With a few microphones, two recorders, and lots of time to be with my thoughts, I recorded in six locations while walking south along the river. I began at the bridge over the Lech Falls, found a few spots to capture along the way until I made it across the border into Austria, where the river was calm and flat - but the slick snowy bank was not - and the battery cover from my recorder decided to slide down and join the river. Alas. I'd like to think it's made it well past Augsburg by now:). "In composing the piece, I knew I wanted to structure it geographically--starting in Austria, and ending at the falls. Further, I wanted the piece to capture a bit of the contemplative mood that persisted within me throughout that day along the river. It had been a while since I had spent a full day recording, and being with the river gave me some valuable space to sit with my thoughts as I listened. Just as I started to lay out the piece, a segment from the preceding section, section 9, was shared by Giuseppe Cordaro. When I listened to his piece, it resonated as a textured breathing, reverberant, a bit haunting. I grabbed a small section that felt like a signal, a warning, and for me, a beginning."Starting the piece with a fraction of Giuseppe's piece gave it a bit of a framing--and as I layered small pieces of each section in geographic order, you could feel the rise of the water and the original field recording from the treetop walk gave it a sense of humanity and space. But the journey I was trying to communicate was not coming through. I removed some tracks, isolated the hydrophone and geofon at times, and extended the length of the church bells (which I recorded on the treetop walk near sunset) as they led into the swell of the falls. From there, I trusted my instincts, which led me to add some instrumentation. With a keyboard and synth, I added in a few notes and chords that felt to be in conversation with the river's sounds. It was too much, but after pulling some back and adding a bit of reverb and some little touches, it started to feel a bit like that day I wandered along the river. None of his predecessors left behind as many depictions of their life, from being fed by his nurse as a toddler to the Totenbild, the picture of the emperor in death, stripped of all his paraphernalia, even his teeth broken out.If you search in google for the most reproduced image of a Holy Roman Emperor, two come up, the portrait of Maximilian that Albrecht Dürer produced in Augsburg in 1518, as shown on last weeks episode artwork and Titian's equestrian portrait of Charles V after the battle of Mühlberg, which in turn is a composition that goes back to several equestrian portraits of Maximilian I.Basically, Maximilian I is the most visually present Holy Roman emperor of them all. And that is not by chance. Full Text of Readings Monday in the Octave of Easter Lectionary: 261 The Saint of the day is Saint Crescentia Hoess Saint Crescentia Hoess' Story Saint Crescentia Hoess was born in 1682, the daughter of a poor weaver, in a little town near Augsburg. She spent play time praying in the parish church, assisted those even poorer than herself and had so mastered the truths of her religion that she was permitted to make her first Holy Communion at the then unusually early age of 7. In the town she was called “the little angel.” As she grew older, she desired to enter the convent of the Tertiaries of Saint Francis. But the convent was poor, and because Crescentia had no dowry, the superiors refused her admission. Her case was then pleaded by the Protestant mayor of the town to whom the convent owed a favor. The community felt it was forced into receiving her, and her new life was made miserable. She was considered a burden and assigned nothing other than menial tasks. Even her cheerful spirit was misinterpreted as flattery or hypocrisy. Conditions improved four years later when a new superior was elected who realized her virtue. Saint Crescentia Hoess herself was appointed mistress of novices. She so won the love and respect of the sisters that, upon the death of the superior, Crescentia was unanimously elected to that position. Under her, the financial state of the convent improved and her reputation in spiritual matters spread. She was soon being consulted by princes and princesses; bishops and cardinals too sought her advice. And yet, a true daughter of Francis, she remained ever humble. Bodily afflictions and pain were always with her. First it was headaches and toothaches. Then she lost the ability to walk, her hands and feet gradually becoming so crippled that her body curled up into a fetal position. In the spirit of Francis she cried out, “Oh, you bodily members, praise God that he has given you the capacity to suffer.” Despite her sufferings she was filled with peace and joy as she died on Easter Sunday in 1744. She was beatified in 1900 and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2001. The liturgical feast of Saint Crescentia Hoess is celebrated on June 15. Reflection Although she grew up in poverty and willingly embraced it in her vocation, Crescentia had a good head for business. Under her able administration, her convent regained financial stability. Too often, we think of good money management as, at best, a less-than-holy gift. But Crescentia was wise enough to balance her worldly skills with such acumen in spiritual matters that heads of State and Church both sought her advice.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
