The purpose of Evil: A North Korean Christian Refugee Perspective (American Society of Missiology, 2024) is to describe how the North Korean refugee understanding of evil can shape missionary practice in the Korean Peninsula. The central research question guiding this study is, How do North Korean Christian refugees describe evil based on their lived experiences? Twelve North Korean Christian refugees were interviewed. The findings indicate that North Korean Christian refugees understand evil as the oppression of the vulnerable, primarily due to human activities, and as exemplified through governmental actions, human trafficking, and sexual violence. This study also discusses how North Korean refugees understand evil in light of theology, specifically teleology and theodicy, and explores how their understanding resonates with historic Christian beliefs in Korea. Analysis of the interviews provides practical implications for Christian ministry and theodicy as well as the sensitization of practitioners who work with North Korean refugees, specifically, to encourage practitioners to subvert the oppressive narratives that North Koreans are responsible for the evil that befalls them, and to be aware that refugees may have been traumatized by their own compatriots. Dave Broucek is a career practitioner and student of the global mission of the church. He values research into the lesser-known aspects of missions as well as scholarship that addresses the big questions of mission theory and practice. Tithing has long been a fundamental practice among Christians as an act of faith and obedience. Many churches today continue to emphasize tithing as a means of supporting ministry, aiding the needy, and demonstrating trust in God's provision. No doubt about it though, when money is involved, there will be bad actors. With the rise of televangelism and the seed-faith gospel, many Christians have grown cynical about giving. Even in local churches, there is a growing sentiment that the Christian is not responsible for the tithe, but that it is an Old Testament practice, done away with in the New Testament. Is that true? What does scripture reveal about the practice of the tithe? Is it relevant today?Brandon Briscoe, Provost of Living Faith Bible Institute, has invited Pastor Chris Best, Missiology instructor at the Living Faith Bible Institute onto the show to address this subject from a biblical perspective.Visit https://lfbi.org/learnmore

Every church should be a safe space for everyone who comes in. Every church should also be equipping people to confront the powers of darkness and help those in trouble. Unfortunately, far too many churches are unsafe internally, which leaves them unprepared to confront external dangers. An unsafe church creates a toxic environment that works against the gospel. A safe church is battle-ready to combat the worst of the world's problems. Make My Church Safe by respected pastor, Sam Rainer, is designed to be a brief and general overview of the best practices regarding church safety for a broad audience. Sam Rainer serves as president of Church Answers. He is the co-founder of Rainer Publishing, and he also serves as lead pastor at West Bradenton Baptist Church in Southwest Florida. Sam has written hundreds of articles for several publications. He is a frequent conference speaker on church health issues. Sam holds a BS in Finance and Marketing from the University of South Carolina, an MA in Missiology from Southern Seminary, and a PhD in Leadership Studies at Dallas Baptist University. Are there unchurched and unreached peoples who might be missed by current methodologies and mindsets? Is innovation in church and missions primarily a process that has to do with ideas/technologies/tools/methods or does it reside in something else that God gifts us with? Pioneering isn't easy - the Church needs better pathways to nurture ideas, support innovators, and build collaborative movements for the challenges of our time. Tyler Prieb founded Missional Labs to help bring a startup mentality to individuals and teams working on new projects that go after Great Commission impact.Join Ted Esler and Matthew Ellison as they engage Tyler on the need for a renewed imagination in our evolving church and missions fields. Research (Dr. Elliot Stephens) has shown that there are three factors that affect attrition on the mission field: interpersonal skills, ministry competency and spiritual formation. Agencies can train for skills, but it's these softer skills that are often neglected at higher levels of Christian education. Ed Scheuerman built his program at Lancaster Bible College largely in response to this research. Listen in as Ted Esler, Matthew Ellison, and Ed Scheuerman discuss trends in higher Christian education as it relates to missions and mentoring the current generation of students. After getting his BA in Philosophy (with an emphasis in Religious Studies) from West Chester University (PA), Ed completed one year of formal Bible training, taking 42 hours of Bible and Missions classes at Tennessee Temple University in 1985. In 1986, he completed his MA in TESL from WCU. In December 2007, he completed his Doctorate of Missiology degree from Biola University. He was ordained by Calvary Bible Church in Hanover, PA. Ed and his wife Carol served with PIONEERS, International, in Southeast Asia for 23 years. They served in China for nearly seven years (starting in 1987), teaching and ministering at a university. Their work was primarily with their students, discipling those who came to faith. They were then based in Hong Kong for four years (1994-1998) as a support link to the in-China team. In 1997, Ed was asked to assume the role of Area Leader for South Asia / Mainland Southeast Asia (shepherding the teams from Vietnam to India). The family relocated to Chiang Mai, Thailand. The Area Leader role was primarily a pastoral role, shepherding church planting teams. While there, Ed also became involved in various member care ministries. In May 2010, Ed was recruited by Lancaster Bible College to be the Coordinator of the Intercultural Studies major. His book, Knowing God to Make Him Known: Living out the Attributes of God Cross-Culturally” was published in 2021 and is used by churches and missions agencies to help train potential missionaries. His passion is to help students find and follow God's call for their lives in the cause for world missions. The trumpet is one of the most often used symbols in all of scripture. We see, particularly in the Old Testament, that the sound of a trump was used to gather an assembly, to call soldiers to war, and to draw people into worship. The Bible presents us with trumpets that call us into Christ's arms, and trumpets that mark destruction during the tribulation. How do the trumpets differ, and how do they help us better understand God's grand design? Today, provost of Living Faith Bible Institute Brandon Briscoe has invited James Fyffe, faculty professor of Missiology at the Living Faith Bible Institute to do a Bible study on the topic of the "trumpets" of Scripture.Note: As an added resource for this episode, check out this visual outline of the topics and times discussed in RevelationVisit https://lfbi.org/learnmore
In Missiology Reimagined: The Missions Theology of the Nineteenth-Century African American Missionary (Pickwick, 2024), Kent Michael Shaw I examines the lives and theology of early African American missionaries of the Antebellum and Reconstruction era. The enslaved and formerly enslaved constructed a hermeneutic and interpreted the sacred text through a lens that contradicted the enslaver's version of Christianity. They engaged Scripture on their own terms and embraced a theology of mission that compelled them to risk death and re-enslavement to pursue a global mandate from God. These pioneering missionaries were not only mission workers but missiologists. The reader will discover an applied missiology with relevance not only for the African American church of that day but for the church as a whole today. Catherine Gray, host of Invest In Her, talks with Sarah Dusek, a venture capitalist and co-founder of EnygmanVentures, a venture capital fund. She invests in women-led businesses in Southern Africa, creates solutions to wealth disparity, and provides access to capital for women. In 2017, after successfully selling her company, Under Canvas, for more than $100 million, Sarah launched Enygma Ventures. In that same year, Under Canvas received a spot on the coveted Inc. 5000 list, and Sarah was named to Ernst & Young's EY Entrepreneurial Winning Women list. Sarah began her career in the nonprofit world in her early twenties working in Southern Africa and Southeast Asia. After almost eight years, she became disillusioned with the lack of change resulting from her efforts. She realized that the most effective vehicle for driving change and solving big world problems is business. Businesses are sustainable solutions to problems. They drive economies, create self-sufficiencies, and change our world. Business can, and should, be a force for good. Today, Sarah offers online courses for early-stage entrepreneurs (hosted at www.pranary.com). Over the past year, five thousand entrepreneurs have gone through her programs to become investor-ready and learn how to build valuable companies. She is a regular contributor to Forbes.com, The Telegraph, and TRT World. She is also chairwoman of the Women's Giving Circle for The Global Good Fund, a social entrepreneurship leadership development program, and sits on the board of ten (and rising) startup companies in Southern Africa, as well as Under Canvas. Sarah has an LLB Law degree from Exeter University, UK, and an MA from University of Manchester in Missiology. She divides her time between the US and South Africa with her husband and two children. www.sheangelinvestors.com www.pranary.com

Have questions about demons and forces of evil? Have questions about the occult and new age spirituality? Jeff sits down with Jon Thompson, seminary professor who teaches on warfare, for a conversation about evil, demonology, satan, and how the forces of evil can be at work in your daily life, and most importantly how to live in freedom. Jon Thompson is the Senior Pastor of Sanctus Church — a multi-site church in the Greater Toronto Area and online — where he has served for 27 years. He holds a Master of Theological studies from Tyndale Seminary and a Doctorate of Missiology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Passionate about engaging seekers, skeptics, and believers about the Christian faith, Jon has authored three best-selling books: Convergence, Deliverance, and Perseverance.
The church has been fitly joined to accomplish God's will in this world. This is confirmed in Scripture. Ephesians 4:16 says, "From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love."God has provided each individual with unique gifts that they might contribute to the work of their local church to meet the needs of the brethren, and achieve the objectives of the Great Commission.Like many biblical teachings, there have been confusing and false teachings surrounding the subject of spiritual gifts. The Christian predilection for spiritual experience has given way to justifying much of these false teachings.Today on the Postscript, Provost of Living Faith Bible Institute, Brandon Briscoe, will be discussing spiritual gifts with Dr. Chris Best, Missiology instructor at LFBI – asking what the Bible has to say about the gifts and how they function to further our faith and God's will. One of the early crucial steps you can take toward the mission field is to become deeply connected and involved in a healthy sending church. College and university students rarely see this as a priority. If you want to be a faithful and effective missionary, you must! This episode describes qualities to look for and how to help yourself, your case as a missionary candidate, and your chosen church. This is a make-it-or-break-it move for you right now. Read Missions on Point: The Local Church at the Heart of Ecclesiology and Missiology for the biblical apologetic for the centrality of the local church in missions.

This episode deals with a few key thoughts about church planting around the world. Throughout the Old Testament, we find holy men and women who committed themselves to the work of prayer and fasting. People like Moses, King David, Ahab, Daniel, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, and the Jewish people. Fasting was employed as they sought forgiveness from egregious sins that they'd committed or when loved ones needed restoration for health issues, when people needed protection from danger or needed protection from their enemies. Fasting is not just a phenomenon of the Old Testament. Fasting continues to be recognized as an important way to draw near to God and to seek his face in times of hardship and trouble. Today, Provost of Living Faith Bible Institute Brandon Briscoe has invited Pastor James Fyffe to discuss what the Bible says about fasting. James is a professor of Missiology at the LFBI, as well as professor of nursing at Rockhurst University. Visit https://www.lfbi.org/learnmore

For thousands of years of Christianity and Judaism, there has been an ongoing debate about what it means for a person to be accountable for their sin. In fact, the debate sits at the heart of the historic contention of the Roman Catholics who practice and perform pato baptism (infant baptism) and the Baptists who believe that baptism is reserved for those who have put their faith in Christ - which implies there is a free will and intellectual capacity to understand and receive the terms of the gospel, something which infants and small children cannot do. What is the age of accountability? That's our question for today. Or another way of asking it may be - When does a person have the discretionary faculty to make a decision concerning Jesus Christ? How do we, particularly as parents, recognize that a child is aware and thus answerable to God for their sin? Is it a sudden realization? Is there a specific age or is it a gradual realization? To help us better understand what the Bible says about the age of accountability, we have invited Pastor, Dr. Chris Best, Missiology instructor here at the Living Faith BIble Institute to discuss this subject that will benefit anyone looking for biblical answers on the topic.
