Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok, kembali. With rapid urbanisation and rising inequality in Indonesia, levels of urban poverty have also increased, and people living and working in informal circumstances face ongoing threats of eviction. Periodically, the urban poor’s activism to defend and advance their interests has taken centre stage in Indonesian politics, never more so than in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial elections, when the issue of evictions became entwined with Islamist opposition to the incumbent governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok, in the massive mobilisation against him. What is the lived experience of urban poverty in Indonesia, and what forms of activism do the urban poor engage in? How have various Indonesian governments responded, and what prospects do the urban poor have to carve out a place for themselves in Indonesia’s cities? In this week’s Talking Indonesia podcast, Dr Dave McRae discusses these issues with Dr Ian Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Politics and Terrorism and Count-terrorism Studies at Murdoch University and the author of The Politics of Protection Rackets in Post-New Order Indonesia: Coercive Capital, Authority and Street Politics. The Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Dave McRae from the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute, Dr Jemma Purdey from Monash University, Dr Charlotte Setijadi from the Singapore Management University and Dr Dirk Tomsa from La Trobe University. The past few years have seen repeated questioning of the independent workings of police, the prosecutors and the courts in Indonesia, ranging from accusations that prosecutions have been used to limit opposition or coerce support for the government, to suspicions that the outcome of high profile cases such as the blasphemy prosecution against then Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama had as much to do with societal pressure and political considerations, as it did with the letter of the law. Are such perceptions justified regarding the politicisation of law enforcement, and how do the government and other external parties intervene in legal cases? What are the implications for the rule of law in Indonesia? In this week's Talking Indonesia podcast, ] Dr Dave McRae discusses these issues with Dian Rositawati, Chair of the Board of the Indonesian Institute for an Independent Judiciary (LeIP). Dian has been closely involved in judicial reform in Indonesia for two decades, and is currently also undertaking a PhD at Tilburg University. In this first episode of 2019, we're back — and ready with our hot takes! We discuss the first round of presidential debates between candidates Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto, with their respective running mates Ma'ruf Amin and Sandiaga Uno. This first round of debates tackled issues of human rights, corruption, the law, and terrorism — but you wouldn't have guessed it from the reactions of most viewers, including us, who thought the debate was lackluster, gimmicky, and dramatic for the wrong reasons. We chat about how Sandi was probably the big winner of the night and how Ma'ruf Amin needs to improve his debating skills before he can match Sandi and Prabowo and do Jokowi justice. We also provide a quick update on the release of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, better known as Ahok (although he now prefers to be called by his proper name or BTP instead of his Chinese-Indonesian moniker), after nearly two years in prison because of blasphemy charges. The former governor of Jakarta is expected to be released without much fanfare and is unlikely to participate in Indonesian politics or anything involving the presidential elections. There have been reports that BTP will be speaking in various engagements outside the country after his release.

Young politicians Indonesia is undoubtedly a young nation. The median age of the population is just 28 years. In the 2019 elections, 45% of eligible voters will be between 17 and 36 years of age. More than ever, Indonesia’s youth play a key role in the country’s politics. In Talking Indonesia this week, Dr Jemma Purdey talks to Rian Ernest, a senior member of the Indonesia's new 'youth' party, Indonesia Solidarity Party (Partai Solidaritas Indonesia, PSI). Ernest (31 years) is a first time candidate for the party in the 2019 legislative elections. He is a lawyer and former adviser to then Governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. What motivated Rian to join to enter a career in politics at this moment in Indonesian history? As a young Indonesian, what are the most pressing issues for the future? What role will Indonesia's youth play in that future? Will it be a politically active one

This week, we take a look at the controversy surrounding the recent X-Men: Gold #1 comic. Muslim artist Ardian Syaf stirred up a lot of anger after including some arguably anti-semitic “easter eggs” in his drawings. To understand what is going on, it helps to know that the messages were in support of a movement against recently ousted Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. He was charged with blasphemy for criticizing the Koran (although it would appear he didn’t actually do that but we’ll get into that during the podcast). We talk about the whole mess with our guest, Marvel super fan Mark Sherman. Mark also becomes the first guest to answer our new five questions! For more, here’s an article from Bleeding Cool with several relevant links. Also interesting is this piece by G. Willow Wilson, who is also a Muslim. And hey – here’s one of the panels in question.
The blasphemy case against Jakarta's governor and ally of President Widodo could land Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in jail, says Ben Bland. Religious and ethnic tensions are rising in the Muslim-majority country and critics say the backlash against the Chinese minority — to which Purnama belongs — is being stoked by political rivals See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode, we have Stephanie and her close friend (and fellow Chinese-Indonesian woman) Skolastika "Tika" Lupitawina discuss the recent rise in anti-Chinese sentiments and rhetoric due to the mass protest on November 4th against the Christian Chinese-Indonesian governor of Jakarta, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, or more commonly known as Ahok. We break down the reasons why Chinese-Indonesians are feeling anxious, including the brutal history of violence & discrimination against the Chinese in Indonesia, and debunk the myth of structural/institutional racism perpetrated by Chinese-Indonesians against native Indonesians.
In this episode, we discuss the Kalijodo eviction & demolition story and how Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, or Ahok, in executing said event. We investigate his potentially problematic use of military (TNI) presence, explore the different roles & responsibilities of Indonesia's military and police forces and the controversial history of using the military in the nation's past, and profile Surabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini and her success in evicting & demolishing the Dolly neighborhood. All of this are done in an effort to hold our politicians accountable to our democratic beliefs and values. Yay democracy!
