Superman: Earth One is a series of graphic novels written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Shane Davis. The series is a modernized re-imagining of DC Comics' long-running Superman comic book franchise as the inaugural title of the company's Earth One imprint. Earth One's Superman exists alongside other revamped DC characters in Earth One titles, including Batman: Earth One and Wonder Woman: Earth One, as well as other graphic novels. The first volume was published in the US in October 27, 2010 by DC Comics, and in the UK in 2011 by Titan Books. Superman: Earth One Volume Two was released on October 31, 2012. Superman: Earth One Volume Three was released on February 4, 2015, with Ardian Syaf illustrating the book instead of Davis. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message

Joe and Mike delve into Gail Simone and Ardian Syaf's reintroduction of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl to the DC Universe. The discussion takes the guys through their thoughts on anti-establisment allegories in Gotham, symbolism that's too obvious, and their differing opinions on new villains The Mirror and Gretel.

In today's episode we dive into "Flashpoint" with a quick dive into "Reverse Flash #1" and issue 1 of the Flashpoint titled comic story. There are over 70 Flashpoint tie-in comics, but we're just covering the main story arc, with occasional mentions of the tie ins. Let's dig in! Get ready for a cliffhanger! The entire Flashpoint arc is available on DC Universe. Starting with "Flashpoint #1", we are dropped into an Earth where things aren't quite what we expect. Different heroes, Different world powers, different relationships. What's going on? Well over the next few episodes we want to tell you all about it! Jim Butcher brings Harry Dresden a Wizard Detective from Chicago to the comic book page! With the help of Ardian Syaf, we can see what Dresden and the entourage of this modern fantasy looks like. From page to picture. But how well does it hold up? Tell us your thoughts: Let us know on social media Twitter @comictradespod Facebook facebook.com/ctmpod Or email us ctradesmonthly@gmail.com
From 2009: Jim Butcher’s "The Dresden Files"s is one cool series. I love the notion of a wizard operating within the almost real world of Chicago, working at arm’s length from both the police and organized crime. "The Dresden Files" began and continues as a series of novels. It was also, briefly, a syndicated television series. If you need a jumping on point, try the graphic novel, which is adapted by Mark Powers and drawn by Ardian Syaf. And then you can follow me backward into reading the books.
Saludos a Frederic Werthan. This week, we take a look at the controversy surrounding the recent X-Men: Gold #1 comic. Muslim artist Ardian Syaf stirred up a lot of anger after including some arguably anti-semitic “easter eggs” in his drawings. To understand what is going on, it helps to know that the messages were in support of a movement against recently ousted Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. He was charged with blasphemy for criticizing the Koran (although it would appear he didn’t actually do that but we’ll get into that during the podcast). We talk about the whole mess with our guest, Marvel super fan Mark Sherman. Mark also becomes the first guest to answer our new five questions! For more, here’s an article from Bleeding Cool with several relevant links. Also interesting is this piece by G. Willow Wilson, who is also a Muslim. And hey – here’s one of the panels in question.

-Join Zuhdi as he dives into the telling controversy over at Marvel comics over an Indonesian Islamist artist, Ardian Syaf, who surreptitiously slipped anti-Semitic, anti-Christian messages into a recent series of X-Men Gold #1 comics and then bragged about it on social media. Rakhmat Akilove, the Stockholm, Sweden ISIS-inspired terrorist confesses to the vehicular jihad and still calls it revenge for America's attacks on Syria even though the US bombed the Assad regime. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew watched the live action remake of the Disney animated feature, Beauty and the Beast and D. Bethel discusses his experience at this year's Sacramento Indie Arcade Expo. REGRESSIVE RESURRXION: First, the comic book news cycle went nuts because the first post-Inhumans vs. X-Men book was released, X-Men Gold, which was then subsumed by the fact that people seemed to like it, which was then subsumed by the likelihood that X-Men Gold artist, Ardian Syaf, may have placed possibly intolerant symbology in not-so-hidden places throughout the book. Then it turned out that he definitely did that. It has been a roller coaster of news and insight into Indonesian politics (where Syaf resides) that has been mostly very sad and upsetting for X-Men fans. *Extra Bit: Marius Thienenkamp of Comicsverse wrote a thoughtful analysis and retrospective of this entire affair. THE TWO MASTERS: On the threshold of the debut of Doctor Who's Series 10, it was revealed that actor John Simm would be returning to the show in his former role as The Master, the longtime foe of the show's titular hero. Last seen at David Tennant's departure from the lead role, he returns during the tenure of his successor, Michelle Gomez as Missy. What this means for the episode(s) in which they appear together (the last one or two of the season), we can't yet say, but both Dan and Andrew are pretty excited about it. Brandon & Rem invite you to sit in with comic shop owner Jordan Lowe to talk about what is happening with Marvel & the comic world at large! Poor Marvel has had just a terrible few weeks with PR nightmares such as VP of sales David Gabriel blaming diversity for the lurch in sales. From there, we ask Jordan's perspective as a shop owner and comic connoisseur whether the problem is diversity or overall storytelling. Turns out it's just not that simple! Finally, we dive into the controversy with artist Ardian Syaf who, in his first issue of Marvel's X-Men Gold, scrawled in subtle support for an Indonesian Muslim extremist group. As of this recording, Syaf's fate in Marvel was still unknown, but as of this writing, he has been terminated from Marvel's roster. In this week's episode, we start things off with a doozy of a story with the artist Ardian Syaf landed in very very hot water to say the least after putting some subtle political messages into X:Men Gold #1. We break down what happened, what the messages were and what they meant, and how a lot of the fallout has occurred since this the messages were pointed out. Then Steve tells about how the movie Your Name broke him and explains without trying to give anything away why you should see it. After that we try a new segment for discussion that still needs a title, in which all of us bring a topic without the others knowing and seeing what comes out of it. If you like the new segment or have a question you would like us to talk about you can send it to us on our Facebook, twitter, or email us with it! It's been a busy couple of weeks, so Paul and Al have got nearly an hour of chat about the comics news, including the sad death of Bernie Wrightson, the closing of ComicsAlliance, Marvel's four-fold woes with digital code backtracking, artists vs writers, diversity and sales, and Ardian Syaf's hidden messages, and the announcement of the New Warriors TV show, along with reviews of Royals and Eleanor and the Egret. I don't have plans and schemes, and I don't have hopes and dreams, I don't have anything, if I don't have the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.

Not many Prometheus and Ollie - round one Prometheus has skills; does cool special flip (Ollie recognizes it; he learned it from a woman in Russia) Wild Dog shoots weapon out of Prometheus's hand, but Artemis shoots his guns Prometheus disappears with Artemis Prometheus and Ollie - round two Action is cut with flashback from 4 years ago Prometheus has dead bodies posed just like how Ollie killed them Its super creepy and really helps to amp up the tension Fight up escalator (flashback) Prometheus able to escape; makes Billy Malone look and sound like him Similar to the Joker's hostages in The Dark Knight Flashbacks: Share your thoughts 4 years ago - Ollie as The Hood Killing people; The List Diggle knows Ollie is The Hood Ollie after Justin Claybourne, who manufactured weaponized TB in order to sell medicine for it Diggle warns Ollie that his actions could have unintended consequences Red pen! Felicity is awkward and cute when she helps Ollie find address (1852) Ollie: Has he learned after all this time? Brings team to first fight w/Prometheus Goes alone when find Prometheus again - why? Being confronted with past makes him act like that again - he kills Prometheus instead of putting an arrow in his knee Does he have to kill Prometheus? Confesses to team the truth First instinct is to push everyone away The expression on his face when he sees HER in the Arrowcave Diggle Active in flashback Leads group hug at end when Ollie wants to push everyone away Is called by Lyla to safe house Is taken in by soldiers Thea Feels as though the Dominators dream renewed her purpose Tells Ollie that we leave good and bad legacies Suits up as Speedy! Is this a onetime thing after the reveal of Artemis' betrayal? Felicity Awkwardly introduces Billy to friends; suggest double date w/Ollie Tells Billy not to investigate Prometheus; Billy does anyway because that's his job Billy sends her photo of baby - is looping her in on what he finds Blames Prometheus for Billy's death Quentin Lance Not in episode Curtis Has lied to husband Paul - doing a start up with Felicity Tells hubby the truth - Paul gives ultimatum Realizes being Mr. Terrific gives him purpose Paul leaves b/c can't see him go off every night and risk life Wild Dog “I don't like rules or listening” Does the opposite Ollie instructs (maybe Ollie pulls an “opposite day” move) Is he a father? Artemis Gives Rene, Rory, and Diggle stockings with their code names Says guys are her only family Betrays Oliver because city needs protecting from him Ragman Makes Flashpoint joke Figures out how to sequence DNA D.A. Adrian Chase Really wants Prometheus dealt with Puts kill order on Prometheus Susan Williams Ollie's date to the Christmas party Drinks Russian vodka Russian writing on the bottle is centered on screen, is this a hint? Tells Ollie shutting people out is not a good thing to do Has sexytimes with Ollie Laurel Is this due to Barry and Flashpoint? Or maybe due to Legends of Tomorrow where Sara revealed Damian's future so now he is travelling time to avert it. Bratva Not in episode Prometheus Leads? - A whole bunch At least 30 years old Justin Claybourne's son - ???? Seems too easy if this is the case Son not publicly known - mentioned in divorce papers Has studied Oliver for four years How does he(?) know that Ollie killed his father and studied fighting in Russia? When did he(?) find out all of this about Ollie? Is it Claybourne's son? Could it be someone else who just knows about what Ollie has done when he was The Hood and was working off of The List? Tied to The List He sounds like Michael Dorn to Chris (reddit seems to agree) Michelle's List O'Suspects: (I'm keeping this active until the mask comes off) Tommy Merlyn - Not likely now. In Ollie's Dementor vision as someone proud of Ollie New: Susan Williams - if the Claybourne son thing is a red herring; then it could be her; she is old enough, drinks Russian vodka, and has finally confirmed Ollie was in Russia. Maybe her real name isn't SW Robert Queen - too old? But is the author of The List. In Ollie's Dementor vision as someone proud of Ollie. New: It's actually Claybourne's son Adrian Chase (but more likely to become Vigilante) Billy Malone - dead Helena Bertinelli (but I would rather see her as either Huntress or head of the Bertinelli family) Isabel Rochev Mckenna Hall Shado - not Claybourne's child and not really connected to The List Slade Wilson - not tied to The List Talia al Ghul (see this week's news) New: Quentin Lance (likely a red herring) (in rehab) Roy - too young and in Ollie's Dementor vision as someone proud of Ollie; also, not really tied to The List Viktor (SP's add) - too old CURRENT EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS & POP CULTURE REFERENCES Season Episode “What We Leave Behind” (Date: 08 Dec 2016) Article: http://comicbook.com/2016/12/08/arrow-easter-eggs-and-things-you-might-have-missed-in-the-season/ JUDAS CONTRACT - A young, female team member who is recruited into Team Arrow and then seduced to the dark side and ends up becoming a sleeper agent for the villain is pretty much exactly the plot to the classic New Teen Titans storyline The Judas Contract. OLIVER'S CHRISTMAS MOVIES - According to Stephen Amell's recent Facebook Live video, he shares Oliver's favorite Christmas movie (Die Hard) and the "Its true!" he delivered after saying so in the episode was actually a Stephen Amell-ism, not Oliver Queen's. His second choice, It's a Wonderful Life, is an interesting one considering..."I was very lucky to be able to rewatch that movie last week."...which of course is not a thing that happened. He was subjected to a kind of custom-made It's a Wonderful Life, where the Dominators showed him a whole different timeline and how his life and the lives of those around him might be different if he had made different decisions. BIG BELLY BURGER - The mention is because the to-go bag for the DC Universe's favorite burger joint was the focus of a shot that hung on for a few seconds AND transitioned from the present day to the flashbacks. That's a lot of camera time for a fast food container. CLAYBOURNE - While Justin Claybourne's name did in fact appear on The List, we never saw him dealt with in season 1 and all of the scenes here that were calling back to the first year of the series were entirely new material. This, of course, opens up the question of whether we might see some more such stories in flashbacks for future episodes...! ALMOST EVERY WEDNESDAY - "People who are supposed to be dead turn out to be alive almost every Wednesday." Weirdly enough never during the summer or between mid-December and late January, though. THE HOOD - Oliver's season 1 costume, the kill list, the sets, the mission, his arguments with Diggle...this is what it was like when he was The Hood and not Green Arrow. THE RED PEN - The red pen is a nice callback to some of Felicity Smoak's earliest appearances, and that makes it worth breaking out to talk separately about "IT Girl Felicity," back when Oliver was still making up outlandish stories to get her help instead of just coming clean with her. AK DESMOND PHARMACEUTICAL - It seems worth noting, since Dr. Alchemy is such a big part of The Flash this season, that A.K. Desmond Pharmaceutical could plausibly be considered a wink-and-a-nod reference to Albert Desmond, a chemist who would go on to become Dr. Alchemy in the comics. Unlikely, but possible! MAKE THE CITY GREAT AGAIN - Obviously in his final moments, when Claybourne is trying to appeal to Oliver's ideas about "saving the city," he says that businesses like his can "make the city great again," which in the context of the last years' worth of public life feels suspiciously like a reference to Donald Trump's "make America great again" campaign slogan. ARROW NEWS: ARROW FANS HAVE ALREADY SEEN SEASON 5'S FINAL SCENE — OR HAVE THEY? (Date: 05 Dec 2016) Now that “Arrow” has reached season five and has no plans of slowing down, the plan has changed slightly. As Guggenheim said, “Spoiler alert. That's (Ollie's rescue from Lian Yu) going to end up being the Season 5 finale.” Season five's flashback story arc will still end by replaying the first moments of the series, but there's now much more show to come after that moment in season six and beyond. But just because fans saw how season five will end five years ago doesn't mean there aren't surprises still ahead at the end of this season. Guggenheim added that the creators have “some incredibly clear plans for what we want to do in the Season 5 finale,” but that they always leave wiggle room for surprises and cliffhangers. Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-fans-have-already-seen-season-5s-final-scene-or-have-they/ Arrow's David Ramsey: "I Like The Idea Of Felicity Not Defining Herself Through Her Relationship With A Man" (Date: 04 Dec 2016) During the Arrow panel at the CCXP convention in Brazil, David Ramsey was asked to chime in on Olicity. "For me, I like the idea of Felicity not defining herself through her relationship with a man," Ramsey told the crowd. "I like the idea that she can be her own person, and she can be strong and feminine, own the company, without pining over men — Oliver or any other man." Amell said that tonight's script was the first in a long time that legitimately shocked him when he turned the page to that reveal. He also said that he was skeptical at first of the idea of bringing another character back from the dead, but that they're now several episodes down the line in production and that he thinks the story that comes out of it is a good one. For the week of November 28, the CW was up 20% in total viewers versus the same week last year, up 15% in adults 18-49 (0.7 vs. 0.6) and up 16% in adults 18-34 (0.6 vs. 0.5), according to Nielsen stats. The Flash saw its most-watched episode (4.15M) in almost two years (12/9/14) and its highest rated episode of the season. Arrow delivered the series' most watched (3.55M) and highest-rated episode since last season's crossover episode (12/2/15). And DC's Legends of Tomorrow had its most-watched episode ever (3.39M) and its highest-rated episode ever in adults 18-34 (1.0/5). More fun-loving prankster than straightforward villain, Mxyzptlk's fifth-dimensional technology appears as magic to three-dimensional beings; the limits of his powers are vast and unknown. Famously, he can only be stopped and returned to his home dimension by tricking him into saying his name backward (“Kltpzyxm”). Link:http://www.cbr.com/mister-mxyzptlk-to-materialize-on-supergirl/ How “Supergirl” And A Super-Duper Gay Comic Book Clerk Helped Save A Girl's Life (Date: 04 Dec 2016) Mary, a “super-duper gay” employee at a comic book shop in Indiana, shared an encounter she had with a young woman. The girl said she was suicidal because she's gay, and she didn't realize gay women could be happy until she saw the Alex Danvers coming out arc on Supergirl. To help the girl out through the hiatus, the employees suggested Batwoman: Elegy, Midnighter, and Gotham Central. The girl didn't have money for all of the titles, so the employee bought them for her. While Hamill was filming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a new TV version of The Flash was coming together. Three years later, against all odds, he and the producers have found a way for Hamill to make an appearance as James Jesse in each midseason finale so far. And Kara says, ‘I think you wanna meet my sister.' So we're not too concerned with what we're going to try to do next year. But it just gives us another way to come at a story.” DOES THE WORLD KNOW ETs EXIST? | A line was cut for time, in which the G-man known as “Glasses” says, “‘Cover up what? The way we're sort of playing it going forward is that Glasses is good at his job, and when he says he's going to cover it up, he's going to cover it up.” Adds Kreisberg: “There's a mention of it in The Flash, that the threat of aliens brought out all the crazies. But we're sort of Doctor Who-ing it.” Link:http://tvline.com/2016/12/01/legends-of-tomorrow-recap-season-2-episode-7-crossover-dominators-return/ GREEN ARROW COMICS & TOY NEWS X-MEN: GOLD AND BLUE ROSTERS AND CREATIVE TEAMS REVEALED (Date: 28 Nov 2016) X-Men: Gold will be written by Marc Guggenheim with art by Ardian Syaf. We've had him running into the premiere almost every year, we didn't have him running in this year, but we have him running in the hundredth episode." Dinah Laurel Lance - Full-naming your fiancee while doing cutesy talk isn't entirely unheard-of, but here it's a nice little reminder that, yes, Laurel is actually Dinah Lance from the comics, the longtime Justice League and Birds of Prey member known as the Black Canary. Laurel's necklace is the Black Canary logo from the comics Oliver and Company - The reference, in case you missed it the first hundred times we used it or when Cisco explained it this week, is to a Disney animated film from the '80s. It was a musical comedy about a group of streetwise dogs who take in a small, orange cat, in which the soundtrack was primarily driven by Billy Joel, whose biggest fan is probably Arrow EP Marc Guggenheim. Per Guggenheim, he made the Oliver and Company joke in the script, but it was actor Carlos Valdes who added the Billy Joel nod. The Hozen - In the pilot, Oliver gave Thea a Hōzen (宝箭) -- an arrowhead-shaped stone he found around the neck of a dead Japanese soldier on Lian Yu. In the pilot, he told her -- as she tells him this week -- that in Japanese Buddhism, the hōzen symbolizes reconnecting. Palmer's Buyout Offer - The Palmer Technologies buyout of Queen Consolidated came in season 3 of the TV show, but apparently here, Palmer was hovering around Queen as soon as he heard Robert Queen was thinking of stepping down. Van Horn Industries - Van Horn Industries is the name of a company owned by the family of Andrew Van Horn, a superhero known as Gunfire. Gunfire was created during the Bloodlines attack, a '90s attempt to create a bunch of new superheroes by giving them a common starting point: an alien invasion where some of the victims of parasitic, cannibalistic aliens survived and gained powers. Hood Sketch - Along with Diggle under the hood, we get a look at the original Hood sketch and newspaper clippings that made up part of the Starling City Police Department's Rip Hunter-style chalkboard looking for the Arrow in season 1. MY NAME IS OLIVER QUEEN - When Oliver starts to introduce himself, he goes with "My name is Oliver Queen," just like he does in the voice over at the start of nearly every episode. Felicity hilariously cuts him off with "everyone knows who you are." Which serves the story -- he's a famous, wealthy socialite -- and the meta-text of the episode. CHICAGO MED - That roundabout thing about how Tommy is a doctor in Chicago now, and he just couldn't break away from his long shifts to come visit for the wedding? That's a whole lot of meta, talking about actor Colin Donnell, who played Tommy in season 1 and has periodically come back in flashbacks and other such stories. Donnell couldn't come for the hundredth episode because he's now a regular on Chicago Med, which is in production and couldn't spare him. THE PATH NOT TAKEN - This story seem familiar? Like last year's Supergirl episode "For the Girl Who Has Everything," or the "Flashpoint" episode of The Flash? What about "Perchance to Dream" from Batman: The Animated Series? THE FERN - It came back! Was seen when Ollie enters Diggle's Arrowcave ARROW NEWS: Heroes & Villains Fan Fest: Arrow Cast Panel Recap (Date: 19 Nov 2016) Highlights from the Arrow panel include: David Ramsey thankful he has a new helmet, Willa Holland misses wearing the Speedy outfit, and John Jr. is suppose to tie into the Conner Hawke storyline. One of the things that I'm learning now as someone that has a big responsibility at the head of a television show and has some business interests and is a husband and a father– priorities not being in that order — I don't want to stretch myself too thin, and I wouldn't want to do something if I couldn't put my heart and soul into it.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/stephen-amell-has-been-in-contact-with-american-ninja-warrior/?utm_source=CBR-TW&utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_campaign=CBR-TW&view=list ARROW & PROMETHEUS HAVE AN EXPLOSIVE CONFRONTATION IN NEW PHOTOS (Date: 23 Nov 2016) Team “Arrow” is in deep trouble. Guggenheim admits to having some regrets: “The truth is, I don't think I've ever been involved with an hour of television on any show where there hasn't been something I wanted to take back,” he says. “Doing 23 episodes a year, you're just constantly running, so nothing ever turns out exactly the way you want it to. In other words, my list of regrets is actually incredibly long; it's 100 episodes long. I'd say probably my biggest regret is I wish we had allowed the Oliver-Felicity storyline in season 4 to unfold at a more natural pace. We had set these tentpoles at the beginning of the season, and we were a bit too rigorous on how we hit them. That was a case where the planning overtook the storytelling. We didn't do things as naturally and as elegantly as we should have.” Link:http://www.ew.com/article/2016/11/29/arrow-100-episode-spoilers ‘Arrow' EP Marc Guggenheim On Tonight's 100th Episode, CW's Mega-Crossover & What's Next (Date: 30 Nov 2016) Reflecting on Arrow's future and past, as well as the labyrinth and rewards of the multi-show saga, Guggenheim spoke with Deadline about how “Invasion” came together as a crossover and a stand-alone episode of the Vancouver-filmed show. The EP, who developed the show with Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, also hinted at where things could go next for the archer and his team as Arrow heads towards next week's Season 5 winter finale, who we may see more of from the show's past, and what the next crossover could be like. In the interview, when asked about Lillian's means justifying the end, she said, “That is such a great moral question. Everybody could ask themselves that and come up with a whole slew of different answers. It just goes back to the question of, when is it right to do the wrong thing? That opens up a whole can of worms about good and evil, black and white. Where's the gray? Ultimately, she isn't crazy, but she's definitely committed to the end. It does justify the means for her. Obviously, she's been willing to sacrifice any kind of personal relationships with this single-minded focus. There are costs for this character to achieve her commitment.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/brenda-strong-talks-supergirl/ SUPERGIRL: MEHCAD BROOKS COMPARES JAMES OLSEN'S GUARDIAN TO BATMAN (Date: 28 Nov 2016) During a recent set visit, Brooks told CBR and other reporters that James' CatCo position has made him more like the Dark Knight. “I kind of liken it to Bruce Wayne, running an enterprise during the day and then at night putting on the sleek black suit and your costume,” he explained. “James in the DC Universe has seen examples of it before, right? He's never had to do it himself. Yeah, I think he was ready for both of those responsibilities anyway, so now he's handling it well, but at first not so much.” He also discusses the suit, why James is reluctant to tell Kara, and why he thinks Superman would approve.
