The panic kicked in around page 40. Thirteen years ago, director and screenwriter James Vanderbilt set out to write a film about the Nuremberg trials, a moment when the world chose justice over vengeance, putting Hitler's right-hand man Hermann Göring and 23 other high-ranking Nazis before an international court. The story centers on a U.S. Army psychiatrist assigned to evaluate the defendants and determine if they were fit to stand trial. Russell Crowe stars as Göring, with Rami Malek as the American trying to understand the psychology of evil. Nuremberg opens in New Zealand cinemas this Thursday. Director James Vanderbilt joins me now.

Eighty years ago, the Nazi high command was put on trial in Nuremberg. A brand new film, named for the trials, follows a lesser-known story, that of a US Army psychiatrist tasked with determining whether the detained officials were fit to stand trial. It features Kiwi actor Russell Crowe as the charismatic Hermann Göring, Hitler's longtime second in command, and Rami Malek as psychiatrist Douglas Kelly. The film was written and directed by James Vanderbilt, best known for his work on The Amazing Spiderman and Zodiac. As much as the film is about the atrocities committed by the Nazis, it's also very much about the dynamic between Göring and Kelly. Vanderbilt told Jack Tame that one of their early inspirations was ‘Silence of the Lambs', with a person going into a cell and sitting with a prisoner. “In our film they're both trying to get over on each other a little bit, they're both trying to get something out of each other.” “I sort of loved the idea of these two men, both trying to play each other, and yet at the same time, connecting in a way neither of them saw coming,” Vanderbilt said. “That to me just felt delicious.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Russell Crowe shines in Nuremberg as Hermann Göring, who became the face of the Nazi Party following Hitler's suicide and the end of the war, as he's held in custody and probed by a psychiatrist as the titular trials approach. Indeed, while a mediocre film, its actors' performances are a pleasure - with the exception of Rami Malek, whose psychiatrist is twitchy, busy, and a failure. A shame that he's the protagonist, then. We discuss the film's structure and screenplay: José contends that Malek's character is not just badly played but an irrelevance, and the drama would be much better served by focusing on Michael Shannon's prosecutor; Mike criticises what he claims is a stupid person's idea of clever writing. And there's more to think about: how Nuremberg compares to Bridge of Spies, which similarly depicted a novel trial that had obvious implications beyond the courtroom, and Judgment at Nuremberg, the other major dramatisation of the trials; the film's tone, which is able to handle moments of humour but sometimes veers into the overly glib and kitsch; the present-day rise of fascism and the genocide in Gaza to which the film speaks; the use of real footage of Holocaust victims and the purpose to which it's put; and whether we think that its critique of the Catholic Church for its support of the Nazis, and suggestion that dropping the atomic bomb on Japan was an unjustifiable atrocity, are surprising and bold things for a mainstream American film to do... or not particularly impressive, and shouldn't people just know this stuff anyway? Welcome to your pre-Thanksgiving treat, a convoluted podcast about three big things we've seen this week plus a couple of honorable mentions. First, Nuremberg, which stars Rami Malek and Russel Crowe, is a true story about the psychiatrists who tried to get to the bottom of what made the Nahzees tick during WWII. It's a decent film, and of course also stars Michael Shannon. Then, we go onto the mess that is Running Man, staring Glen Powell. Is it bad? Eh? It's not great. Finally, we conclude with Death By Lightning, which is on Netflix right now.  That show tells the true story about President James Garfield's assassination (and also has Michael Shannon, he's everywhere). So no, we didn't see Bugonia yet, thank god, but I also missed out on Predator Badlands. Shoot.

The history books will tell you that World War II ended on September 2, 1945. The filmmaker James Vanderbilt, however, will tell there was still one last battle left to fight as the conflict officially drew to a close. It was a battle to be fought not in the trenches but in a court room, with the eyes of the world watching and the stakes were impossibly high. The Nazi party of Germany had been stopped, with the surviving members of their high command arrested. But it wasn't enough to simply shoot them behind closed doors. They had to be brought to trial and held publicly accountable for the unthinkable horrors of the Holocaust – the entire planet made aware of the systematic cruelty they'd inflicted. Giving these charismatic monsters a chance to excuse their actions in front of the global media, though, ran the risk of giving their ideology a chance to spread. Get this wrong and in fifteen years, the Nazis might come back stronger than before, some on the prosecution worried. It's this terrifying prospect that propels James' new historical drama, Nuremberg, starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, delving into the legal saga that followed the supposed war to end all wars.Today on the show – a spoiler conversation about Nuremberg in which James and I break down the need to tell this story at this moment in time, as the number of people who lived through the Holocaust dwindles. We talk about the throughline between this film and 2007's Zodiac, written by James and directed by David Fincher, which James came on Script Apart to discuss in 2020. You'll hear about how Silence Of The Lambs became an unlikely roadmap for this wartime epic. And we also get into why the movie ultimately arrives at the message that the barbaric tendencies of Hitler and acolytes weren't unique to the Nazi psyche; fascism and authoritarianism could happen – and perhaps is happening – right underneath our noses today.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Why We Never Learn: Echoes of History, Epstein Files, and Atmospheric Chaos | Karel Cast 25-149 Screener season is here, and one film stopped me cold: Nuremberg from Sony Pictures Classics. The dialogue—much of it pulled directly from the original WWII trials—made my jaw drop. Not because of Russell Crowe or Rami Malek's performances, but because it proves something chilling: we've learned nothing. The normalization of horrors, the rationalization of the unthinkable… it's happening again right in front of us. So why can't we break the cycle? Meanwhile, Trump now says “release the Epstein files”—but only because his own base started turning on him. And you can bet whatever gets released will be heavily redacted. Plus: another atmospheric river slams California while FEMA's director resigns mid-disaster. And one more screener, Good Boy, raises a surprisingly deep question: can your dog see things you can't? Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman. The duo beta-tests their soon-to-be-launched podcast series — so new it does not yet have a name — in which they will deliver entertainment news from a Jewish angle (aka Jangle) and review one new or noteworthy film. This week, in episode zero, the pair first discusses the growing boycott of Israeli filmmakers at international festivals. Hoffman weighs in on how this is misfiring when it comes to some of the more prominent -- and very left-wing -- Israeli artists. Next, we hear about "Nuremberg," the Hollywood treatment of the Nuremberg Trials, which began in November 1945, launching the field of international law. In the film, psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek) is ordered to evaluate whether Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe) is fit to stand trial. As the highest-ranking surviving Nazi military commander, to the Allied lawyers, Göring is the "big fish" that must be landed. Borschel-Dan and Hoffman give their differing opinions of the movie and agree to disagree. And so this week, we ask Jordan Hoffman, what matters now. What Matters Now podcasts are available for download on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. This episode was produced by the Pod-Waves. "Nuremberg" is an American historical drama film written, co-produced, and directed by James Vanderbilt. It is based on the 2013 book "The Nazi and the Psychiatrist" by Jack El-Hai and tells the story of a psychiatrist, Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek), who is challenged with determining if Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe) is fit to stand trial at the Nuremberg trials. Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Mark O'Brien, Colin Hanks, Wrenn Schmidt, Lydia Peckham, Richard E. Grant, and Michael Shannon have supporting roles in the film. The film's world premiere was in the Gala Presentations section of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto, where it received positive reviews and a four-minute standing ovation, one of TIFF's longest standing ovations ever. Vanderbilt and Malek were both kind enough to spend a few minutes speaking with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below. “Nuremberg” opens in the spring of 1945. Hitler is dead. Many of his henchmen have died by suicide, have been arrested or have fled. The world is just beginning to grapple with the horrors committed by the Third Reich. Hermann Göring, Hitler's second in command, is arrested by American troops in Austria, who discover him heading west in a convoy of family and friends. Ostensibly, he intends to surrender to the Allies. The film tells the story of the American lead prosecutor, Robert Jackson, who believed captured Nazi leadership — including Göring — should stand trial at Nuremberg. He wanted the men to answer publicly for their crimes. But before they can have their day in court, each one will be examined by a military psychiatrist, to determine if they are mentally fit. The psychiatrist assigned to Göring, the ambitious Robert Kelley, has a secondary intent. He wants to find out what linked the defendants. Did they have a common psychiatric disorder that would explain their heinous crimes? Could their evil be diagnosed, and if so, be prevented from infecting future generations? “Nuremberg,” which opens nationwide this weekend, stars Russell Crowe as Göring and Rami Malek as Kelley. The film is based on Minneapolis writer Jack el-Hai's 2011 book, “The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.” To mark the release of “Nuremburg,” Kerri Miller hosted el-Hai at MPR's St. Paul studios to talk about the book and the movie adaptation. They also discuss the central question that animates both: If the potential for evil lurks inside all of us, how do we stop it? Guest:Jack el-Hai is the author of many books, including “The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.” He lives and writes in Minneapolis. The Trump family's crypto firm, World Liberty Financial, has denied any involvement in the pardon. In an interview with Norah O'Donnell on 60 Minutes, President Trump spoke about health care, which is at the center of the government shutdown fight. He said "we can fix" health care and blamed Democrats for the dispute over the issue and the shutdown. Democrats have said they won't vote to fully reopen the government until there's an agreement to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies. After discussing Lara Croft to death last episode, this time we felt the Need for Speed as we start the engines on our episode covering this largely forgotten car movie. We shifted gears this week to Need for Speed (2014) which is a video game adaptation focused on illegal street racing and other related and non-related crimes. We spend a chunk of time analysing some of the strange casting choices, from lead Aaron Paul failing to ignite the screen with Imogen Poots, to the baffling inclusion of a disheveled Michael Keaton playing an anonymous radio commentator. We will, inevitably, unpack the horrifying behaviour of Rami Malek's character, Finn, and try to remember Dakota Johnson's entirely forgettable character. What to expect from this week's episode: We analyse whether Aaron Paul's career ever truly raced past Breaking Bad. Sarah details her notes on the sheer number of consequential off-screen deaths and subsequent crimes the characters commit. We praise the commitment to practical effects and compare the action movies car chases to classics like Bullitt and Vanishing Point. We examine why the police were not remotely concerned about shutting down Monarch's illegal street racing operation. We spend a necessary amount of time questioning Benny (Kid Cudi) and his physics-defying, time-traveling plane. We discuss how the film could have been improved by trimming the fat (specifically two superfluous characters). We crown our newest winner of the Jason Statham King of Turds Award. Jeff Bridges is here, too, but this is about a new program (Ares) that’s about to embark on a dangerous mission. “Roofman” – A robber evades authorities by hanging out in a toy store. Channing Tatum plays the thief, Peter Dinklage and Kirsten Dunst swirl around him. “Anemone” – Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement for this film directed by his son, Ronan. The plot? Good question, but it will have that DD-L prestige. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” – Jennifer Lopez stars in the Tony winner fans have been asking for. The big question: Were they looking for Lopez to star in it? Bill Conden directs. “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You” – Rose Byrne gets the Oscar buzz as a woman trying to juggle multiple traumas, including a sick child and an absent husband. “Soul on Fire” – This is the story of a St. Louis native who survived burns which covered his body. Andrew Scott plays Richard Rodgers. “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” -- Bruce Springsteen gets the Bob Dylan treatment with Jeremy Allen White in the title role. This, however, only covers the creation of the “Nebraska” album. “Regretting You” – Family issues emerge after the death of a husband and father. Based on Colleen Hoover’s best-seller, it stars Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace. “The Watchers” – M. Night Shayamalan’s daughter Ishana makes her directorial debut with this thriller about an artist who gets trapped in an Irish forest. “Anniversary” – A good cast (Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch) in a thriller directed by Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa. “Bugonia” – Emma Stone continues her run with Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is a remake of a South Korean effort about two men kidnapping an executive, convinced she’s an alien bent on destroying Earth. “Nouvelle Vague” – Richard Linklater has another entry this year. This one’s a look at Jean-Luc Godard and actress Jean Seberg. Guillaume Marbeck and Zoey Deutch start. November releases When We Pray – Jamie Foxx directs the story of brothers who become pastors at divergent churches. Predator: Badlands – While “Alien: Earth” takes over TV screens, the “other” scary creature takes on a remote planet. The Running Man” – Glen Powell steps into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s shoes as a contestant in a game show which features killers all around the world. Nuremberg – Set during the Nuremberg trials, a psychiatrist interviews Nazi prisoners to determine if they are fit to stand trial. Rami Malek and Russell Crowe square off. Ira Sachs directs. “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” – The Four Horsemen get help from newbies hoping to use illusions to get away with big cash. Jay Kelly – It’s an ensemble film but it stars George Clooney as a George Clooney-level star who reflects on life with his manager (played by Adam Sandler). Noah Baumbach directs. Indecipherable – A boy, home alone, gets shaken by the things that go bump in the night. Wicked: For Good – At long last, we find out what happened to Glinda and Elphaba. Expect at least one new song and bigger roles for the men in their lives. No place like home? That’s included, too. Cynthia Orivo and Ariana Grande could double up on the Oscar nominations. Rental Family – Oscar winner Brendan Fraser plays an American actor who plays roles in other people’s lives. STZ – Zombies result when a trio of scientists launch a bio-attack on a bus filled with women. (No kidding.) Zootopia 2 – Residents of Zootopia return for more adventure and product placement. Judy and Nick are on the trail of a new resident, a snake. And dear lord, Ricky Gervais in Big Box Hollywood films, glad those days are gone! PLUS: Should we bring back Mickey Rooney Old Man insults like “hopscotch” and “hot dog” and “cement mixer”? Send us a textWhen three friends—a doctor with a glass eye, an African-American lawyer, and a mysterious nurse-turned-artist—become entangled in a murder investigation in 1930s New York, they uncover a sinister conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of American power. What begins as a quest to clear their names transforms into a fight against a fascist plot to overthrow the U.S. government."Amsterdam" represents one of the most perplexing cinematic experiments of recent years. Christian Bale delivers a fully committed, physically transformed performance as Dr. Burt Berendsen, a WWI veteran who creates unconventional pain medications for fellow soldiers while sporting a prosthetic eye that refuses to stay in place. Alongside John David Washington's stoic Harold Woodman and Margot Robbie's enigmatic Valerie, they form an unlikely trio whose bond was forged in the trenches of Europe and the artistic paradise of Amsterdam. The film attempts to tackle weighty themes—fascism's rise, America's flirtation with authoritarianism, racism, and the corrupting influence of wealth—but repeatedly undermines itself with jarring tonal shifts. One moment we're witnessing the horror of war wounds, the next we're watching Mike Myers and Michael Shannon engage in bird-watching espionage comedy. Taylor Swift makes a memorable appearance only to meet an abrupt and darkly comedic end that epitomizes the film's bizarre approach to storytelling. What makes "Amsterdam" particularly frustrating is the glimpse of greatness hidden within its meandering narrative. Based on the real-life "Business Plot"—a legitimate 1933 conspiracy by wealthy industrialists to overthrow FDR's government—the film had the potential to deliver a timely warning about democracy's fragility. Instead, it buries this fascinating history under quirky character studies and surrealist digressions that never cohere into a satisfying whole.Robert De Niro brings gravitas as the decorated general these conspirators hope to manipulate, while Rami Malek and Anya Taylor-Joy deliver unsettling performances as the wealthy siblings with disturbing agendas. The cast's commitment can't rescue a script that constantly loses focus, jumping between 1918 flashbacks and the 1933 main storyline without allowing either timeline room to breathe. What could have been a powerful historical thriller or an effective period comedy instead lands uncomfortably between genres, testing audiences' patience with its 134-minute runtime and convoluted storyline. Has a film ever left you more bewildered by the gap between its potential and execution?Written Lovingly by AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is jam-packed etc. etc. Bumper-sized, and so on and so forth. But it's true, perhaps this week more than ever as Chris Hewitt sits down for chats with two pairs — first, there's Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, who reunite almost 30 years after The English Patient for this week's Odyssey-sampling drama, The Return. [24:05 - 38:32 approx] Then, there's Rami Malek and Laurence Fishburne, stars of the new spy thriller The Amateur, who reflect upon where they met, their working relationship, and the influence of Event Horizon upon modern cinema. [1:03:32 - 1:17:24 approx] Finally, Ben Travis has a lovely chat with Christopher Landon, the always affable director of this week's thriller, Drop. [1:38:53 - 1:53:53 approx] Either side of those, Chris welcomes Ben and James Dyer into the podbooth, as well as our returning geek queen, Helen O'Hara, back after that small business of getting married. They talk about that, discuss the great movie weddings they'd like to attend, run their eye over the week's movie news (including a whole bunch of trailers), and review The Amateur, The Return, Holy Cow, Drop, and One To One: John & Yoko. Also, Chris unleashes a new and almost instantly unwanted impression, and the question is asked: who is the funniest person Helen knows? The answer may shock you. Enjoy.
