**This is a trigger warning from the Kandid Shop Podcast. On this episode, we will be discussing domestic or intimate partner violence and I want all of you to be aware of what you can and can't handle when listening to this episode. Take care of your mental and emotional health. Thank you.** October is Domestic Violence Awareness, or as they're now calling it Intimate Partner Violence, and I have the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Ms. AnnDena McCleary, author of "Bent Not Broken, Rebirth of a Domestic Violence Survivor," and Founder of Bent Not Broken Inc. AnnDena courageously shared her personal story of intimate partner violence and her road to healing and freedom. "Bent Not Broken, Inc." is her "baby" and was born out of the need to help women & men as they navigate the world free from trauma and abuse. THE STATS: On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence (e.g. beating, burning, strangling) by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime. Only 34% of people who are injured by intimate partners receive medical care for their injuries. IN HER WORDS: "We have the concept of domestic violence, it's just hitting but It's not hitting only. Talking down financial, emotional, mental." If he's talking down to you and he's isolating you and he's letting you feel less than the person, you need to question yourself, Do I need this?" ~AnnDena McCleary "You are beautiful. And you are more than enough. When you could tell your yourself all of this, look yourself in the mirror, Get up every day and celebrate. Put on a little bit of lip gloss, a little bit of makeup, and look at yourself and smile. I am beautiful. I am worthy. And watch how your day goes from a frown to a smile. " ~AnnaDena McCleary "Bent Not Broken, Inc. is an organization that's that's here to rehabilitate domestic violence victims. I don't like the word victims. I wanna say overcomers. It's overcomers. We're all overcomers. So Bent Not Broken is here to assist domestic violence overcomers find themselves again. We are a liaison between the help and you. " ~AnnDena McCleary Everyone deserves to be in a relationship or relationships that are free from violence of any kind. So if you're listening, please know that when you're ready, help and support is available 24/7. The domestic violence hotline is 1-800-799-7233. Check out part 2 of this episode. Rev. Dr. Marisha continues to talk about how we should regulate our mindset to understand that the things we go through bend us but do not break us. Yes, the challenges of life can cause our faith to bend but it is our mindset and how we process unfortunate events that can still give us the victory if we only believe. We must be mindful that no one has the power or authority to control your destiny and purpose. It is how we self-impose our thoughts in a negative way that influences our faith. Take responsibility and realize the bending of your faith causes you to spiritually grow, spiritually blossom and spiritually move forward.

Marisa shares her story of surviving and healing from childhood emotional, mental, and physical abuse through Instagram (@littlebent_notbroken) to help others in a similar situation or with a similar background feel seen and heard, and to validate their experiences and emotions. Covert abuse in the form of narcissism or gaslighting can disconnect the victim from their inherent inner voice and their intuition. It is Marisa's mission to help other survivors reclaim their birthright of self-love and compassion and empower them to live their lives full of freedom, joy, and independence. Instagram

David Wenzel has lived with an inoperable, cancerous brain tumor for the last 10 years. After initially being diagnosed, David’s life completely fell apart...and I do mean COMPLETELY fell apart. His first wife divorced him shortly after his diagnosis, the cat they had shared together collapsed mid-stride across the dining room floor…and died. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Imagine dealing with all of the above PLUS the terminal diagnosis that estimated David only had 5 years left to live on this planet…and that’s if he was lucky. And the amazing part of David’s journey is that today he feels extremely lucky, and the happiest he’s ever been in his entire life. David’s incredibly raw, honest and often times hilarious life story is told in his new book, “Thank You, Kung Fu.” I highly recommend it because I believe it will help you or maybe someone you love. It certainly helped me. David and I dig into a ton of real life shit in this conversation. It’s inspiring. It's spiritual. It’s emotional. I actually cried during our conversation…a first for this podcast. David is one of the most fascinating and talented people I’ve ever met. What’s your story? Do you feel like you have one that you want to share with the world? My new friend David Wenzel has a story to tell, and although it starts with Kung Fu, his story is about so much more. David was diagnosed 9 years ago with a brain tumor – and given 7 years to live. Although he’s surpassed the 7-year mark, David’s battle is not over yet. In fact, he was in the middle of chemo during our interview. Despite his fight with cancer, David is a husband and father of three young girls, an entrepreneur, author, speaker, and founder of Bent Not Broken, a non-profit that provides support and motivation to other cancer survivors. In this episode, we have a very real and very authentic conversation about David’s beliefs and his journey. And we’ll also discuss how to see your own situation, no matter how difficult, in a different light. Mental Health talks are on the rise. The topic makes its way into almost every one of the Queens Stand Up Shows and the more we learn about the mind, the more we understand why the discussions around the topic of mental health have increased. The way we think, the way we interpret what is communicated to us, and the thoughts that linger in our minds directly, shape, and ultimately create the reality we experience, the people we attract, and the health of our relationships. The state of our mental health effects how we feel about ourselves and how we feel about ourselves effects our self-care and how we care for those we love. So we can clearly see why becoming more aware of the state of our mental health can improve the quality of the relationships we have. Anna Dowe, author of “Bent Not Broken.” was able to save her marriage when PTSD was attempting to destroy her relationship with her & her husband. Anna teaches us practical skills through her writing to help usmaintain our mental health and wellness.

Trauma has gotten increasing attention in recent years, and especially in cases where returning veterans come home to family and loved ones, with mental and often physical injuries that have changed them into someone hardly recognizable from the fresh-faced son or daughter who left for their first overseas deployment. In fact, it was an undiagnosed condition until 1980 when the American Psychiatric Society added it to their Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. My guest today, Anna Dowe, is the author of a new book, which chronicles a side of this condition that is rarely talked about or reported on---the impact on the wife and children of a returning veteran. Her new book, Bent not Broken is the story of her 10 year marriage to a veteran of the Canadian military. She describes a condition, called secondary traumatization, and her journey in making many tough decisions for she and her young children. Her book is her story. It is a message of healing and hope and a “gift to other spouses caught in the same situation”. She is an international speaker, coach, guide and mentor with a long list of satisfied clients, including abused women, addicts, those at risk of suicide. Unsurprisingly, her academic training is in psychology, with a degree from York University. In fact, Anna and I share the same book publisher, and I have gotten to know her a little. I have never seen here without a “glow” and a smile. Now that I know her personal life story it is even more remarkable that she exhibits such resilience and optimism. Long before her marriage, during her childhood, she was confronted with family circumstances that are traumatizing in and of themselves, and we will explore all of this today. In this episode, you will learn: -- What “trauma” means and a description of some of the symptoms? --PTSD is most often talked about in a military context, it is not confined to that. There are other forms of trauma arising from family violence, verbal and physical abuse and sexual assaults --About a condition, rarely talked about and even known about—secondary traumatization --Self-limiting beliefs: “how you see yourself impacts how you see the world” -- That spouses sometimes blame themselves for the behavior of the PTSD affected spouse? --How a “burnt-out” brain is a recipe for disaster? --How the events of Anna’s childhood gave her resilience through that experience? In closing, I highly recommend this book to all of our listeners. How can someone get a copy? Thanks to everyone for listening. I hope you found it interesting and helpful in your own life.
