I remember a time in my life when I felt absolutely swarmed with negative thoughts. From the moment I woke up to the moment I went to bed, it was like navigating a field of land mines and constantly mis-stepping. The thoughts were like bombs going off and so all I could do was survive each day and just beg for sleep so I'd have a little bit of reprieve. This, my beloveds, is not how we are meant to do life. Catch that subject line? It's not your relationship. It's you. Slightly provocative? Yes. Likely true on the deepest level? Also yes. Almost everything that I've had to apologize for in a relationship––or that I've wanted an apology for, had to do with my nervous system being too jacked or too drained. The current human reality (you, me, the planet…) We're generally dysregulated, out of balance. We're fried. Frayed. AND… We are Love. We want to show up as Love. We want to receive Love. We want to give Love. And whether we're conscious of it or not, we know on some level that our relationships are THE vehicle for healing, self-awareness, for getting closer to our Higher Self… It ALL happens in relationships. Find a comfortable position, whether seated or lying down, and gently close down your eyes. Take a deep breath in, feeling the air fill your lungs, and exhale slowly, releasing any tension or stress from your body. As you relax, imagine yourself in a peaceful and serene environment. Picture yourself surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature, such as gentle waves lapping against the shore or the rustling of leaves in a forest. Feel the gentle touch of a warm breeze on your skin, allowing it to carry away any worries or distractions. Now, visualize a radiant golden light at the center of your being…….. This light represents your divine essence, your purest self. See it expanding with each breath, filling your entire body with warmth and love. Feel this golden light radiating from within you, illuminating your heart and soul. As you bask in this radiant light, invite your inner child to join you in this sacred space. Imagine her as a younger version of yourself, full of innocence, curiosity, and joy. …..PAUSE See her standing before you, looking into your eyes with a mixture of hope and longing. Extend your hand to your inner child and welcome her presence. ……..PAUSE As she steps closer, embrace her with a warm, nurturing hug. Feel the connection between your hearts, the bond of love and understanding that transcends time. Now, take a moment to communicate with your inner child…..……PAUSE Assure her that you are here, that she is safe, and that you are ready to listen. Allow her to express herself in any way she chooses, through words, images, or feelings. Listen attentively, without judgment, as she shares her dreams, fears, and desires……PAUSE With compassion, reassure your inner child that she is loved, valued, and deserving of happiness……. Let her know that you are here to protect her, to heal any wounds she may have carried, and to guide her towards a life filled with joy and fulfillment….LONG PAUSE In this healing environment, allow any emotions that arise to flow freely……. If tears come, let them cleanse your soul…… If laughter emerges, let it nourish your spirit……… Trust that this release is a beautiful part of your healing journey, a pathway to deeper self-discovery and growth. Now, take a moment to offer forgiveness to your inner child……..PAUSE Forgive her for any perceived mistakes or shortcomings. Release any judgments or expectations you may have held onto, and instead, choose to love and accept her unconditionally…….LONG PAUSE

Don't all of your issues seem to be exacerbated by the holiday season? We're spending increased amounts of time with people and/or family who may have wounded us or still do. We may feel pressured and obligated by Great Expectations for how things "should" be. Perhaps we labor under the financial burden such expectations add; the sometimes extreme changes in environment, sleep, and schedules at work and with travel that can cause burnout; the many occasions for over-stimulation for us or our kids; the sheer amounts and types of food; stifling grief while feeling forced to put on the happy face; sibling rivalries; inferiority complexes; self-medication and addiction triggers; seasonal depression and lack of sunlight; questions and insinuations from others about "where you are" in life. If all of that feels overwhelming to you, perhaps you can see why the holiday season causes your inner child to feel distressed and begin "acting out" in order to get your attention? And why all the guilt for simply wanting to hibernate until the whole season is over, or needing to limit exposure to the entire bit? What if the guilt is driven by a trauma bond? Here are six Ps for navigating the holidays and making them more peaceful and happy: Predict, Prepare, Plan, Priorities, Peace, Pivot. Here's the Anxiety Checklist referred to in the episode. Abusive behavior does not always involve tangible violence. Distinctions must be made between physical violence/abuse—traditionally, the most researched and detectable form—and emotional, or psychological, abuse. Emotional abuse is any nonphysical behavior or attitude that is designed to control, subdue, punish, or isolate another person through the use of humiliation or fear (Engel, 2002). . . . Emotional abuse can include verbal assault, dominance, control, isolation, ridicule, or the use of intimate knowledge for degradation (Follingstad, Coyne, & Gambone, 2005). It targets the emotional and psychological well-being of the victim, and it is often a precursor to physical abuse. . . . Some types of physical behavior can be considered emotional abuse in that they represent physical violence (Marshall, 1996). Examples include: throwing objects, kicking a wall, shaking a finger or fist at the victim, driving recklessly while the victim is in the car, or threatening to destroy objects the victim values. Property damage is a form of emotional abuse considered “symbolic violence” (Engel, 2002) that results in serious psychological, social, and economic costs. Harm inflicted on victim's pets can be emotionally abusive, causing suffering in both humans and animals (Faver & Strand, 2007). Link to study, above. Are you curious? What does your inner child's voice sound like? This episode, perhaps more than any other I've ever done, has the power to change your life. Ask Little Therese for that grace. When we protect and provide love and radical acceptance for our inner child, she glows and warms up inside. We have the inner freedom to breathe more easily and try new things. We know we can tolerate failure or mess ups. We can deal with minor amounts of guilt or shame without getting eaten up with fear. We don't get stuck desperately needing approval from others. Our inner child needs to find safety in the world so she can come out and play and be an active part of our life. It's the child parts that allow us to be creative and wondrous, as the psalmist says. So let's do it. First, we need a few guide bumpers and a grounding technique in case we encounter emotions that threaten to take over. Next, we need to breathe and relax into our inner prayer space. Let's begin by getting comfortable in your bed, Adjusting your body a bit to release any of the tension of the day, And when you find your favorite sleeping position, Take a deep breath in, Signaling to yourself that it's time to transition into sleep, And exhale with a sigh, Relaxing your body further into your bed. PAUSE… Be here, And breathe, Calling your attention away from any thoughts or emotions that are lingering, And deeply into your body. Breathe... PAUSE... Let your eyes get heavier, Unclench your jaw and relax your cheeks. Lower your shoulders, Relax your arms and your hands. Soften your stomach, And feel your legs and your feet get heavier and melt into deeper relaxation. Feel your body here...warm. Relaxed. Soft. PAUSE… Imagine yourself as a little girl. Look at her hair, her body, her eyes. Notice her position, her attitude, her expressions. Take it all in...this vision of yourself as a child. What sounds do you hear her make? What scent is around her? What is her demeanor? PAUSE… Now see if you can imagine a giant bubble on one side of her. A dark, scary, smokey bubble. As you look closer at it, you recognize what's inside...sadness, pain, hurt and fear. So many dark memories inside of this bubble. Maybe you're seeing within it flashes of those dark memories, mini movies from your childhood. Or maybe you're simply seeing the emotions floating within it and feeling their heaviness. The disappointment, rejection, or fear. Relax your body and just observe this bubble. PAUSE... This incredible little girl created stories about each one of those memories or emotions. Maybe she created a story called I'm not good enough. Or I'm not worthy. Or I don't matter. Or even I can't trust others. Or I can't have everything I want. She's not wrong for doing this...it's what all of us do. But there are stories she created that are not allowing you to live as vibrant as you would like. PAUSE… So take a deep, cleansing breath in, And as you exhale, release the heaviness of these stories, PAUSE... And then reach out to this little girl, And embrace her in your arms, holding her close with love...pure love. And watch as that dark, smokey bubble diminishes, little by little. Hug her. Love her. Hold her. Accept her. And watch the stories evaporate away. LONG PAUSE…
