Welcome back to Don't Cut Your Own Bangs — the podcast that makes big feelings feel less scary and approaching them feel possible. In this week's episode, I sit down with Jessica Fein, author, storyteller, and self-described reluctant grief expert. Jessica's story is both heartbreaking and life-affirming. After losing her two sisters and her teenage daughter, Dalia, she discovered that the greatest act of love we can offer is to say the name and share the story. Together, we explore how grief transforms us, how to stay connected to the people we've lost, and how storytelling can bring light to even the darkest seasons of life. This episode is an invitation to soften your heart toward your own pain and let love — not fear — lead the way. Key Takeaways Saying their name is sacred. It honors both memory and love. Grief and joy can coexist. Healing isn't about "getting over it" — it's about learning to live alongside it. Creativity helps us find joy again. Making something — a story, a meal, a moment — reconnects us to life. Connection begins with honesty. You don't have to fix someone's pain to be present for it. Mentioned in This Episode

This week, we put out the call — “What are your growing pains right now?” — and the response was loud and clear: first trimester survival. From nausea that's simply relentless, to exhaustion that hits like a truck, to the juggle of parenting a toddler while growing another tiny human — we see you, and we (absolutely) feel it too… deep in our bones. There's no silver bullet (we wish there was), but in this episode we share our go-to tips, small comforts, and mindset shifts that help make this season of survival just that little bit softer. On this episode of Grease the Wheels, Uncle Jimmy follows up last week's episode with all of the stuff that he forgot — it happens, because as a new guy there is a ton of things to learn in a short period of time and sometimes the people teaching you the ropes will themselves forget things. We also get into the idea of changing jobs and becoming a “NOS” New/Old Service when you have a bit of experience and are changing venues. There are a lot of things to navigate with this including the personalities, procedures, and preferences of the new shop that you are going to. From what they are charging in labor for common jobs, to the uniforms, shop configuration, and what special tools this new shop may or many not have the grass might not always be greener, so the more questions that you ask in the interview will set you up better for what is expected. Can you work on your own cars after hours? Being helpful to anyone that is new to your shop regardless of how much they know or how much they do not know is just the right thing to do, especially in an industry that has a historically high turnover rate, because you want to be known as a good person who is generally helpful and welcoming to the new talent. One thing that both new-new guys and new-old guys need to be aware of is the massive proliferation of video in the service lane, and if you see the bottom of the second paragraph and send your service managers and fixed opes directors to it, you'll find a massive advantage! Also, Uncle Jimmy has platypus feet. This Episode of Grease the Wheels is brought to you in partnership with Surfwrench Digital! On this episode of Grease the Wheels, we have some serious words of wisdom (and rants) for the new guys. If you have new guys in the shop, this is probably a good one to start them out with, because it should theoretically cut about 90% of the BS if they actually listen! From inherent mechanical curiosity to becoming a master technician, the road for a mechanic is a long one that is fraught with difficulty. Choosing the right tech school is a big part of getting yourself ahead and learning many of the core concepts that we use on a daily basis - that is of course if you actually paid attention and showed up every single day. Seriously, attendance and effort are massively rewarded at this phase, because if you miss something the confusion is going to compound quickly and it can be incredibly hard to get back on track. Research where you want to go to tech school as well, because there are tons of options, scholarships, and external factors that will make your success either more likely or less likely. Continuing ed is a real thing here as well, including manufacturer specific training programs and the relentless march of automotive technology that aims to make our job more difficult every single day. We also get into the tools debate with a simple mantra - less is more! Believe us, we have seen tons of technicians go massively into tool debt and then exit the profession before they are even done paying for the socket set. Bottom line, it can be a great career, but dues need to be paid, and mistakes can quickly compound if you don't slow down and seriously think about your choices, strengths and weaknesses. Based in Glasgow, Angela Kirkwood is an illustrator and animator known for her whimsical, topsy-turvy worlds filled with expressive characters that inspire joy and curiosity. Having worked for clients like Adult Swim, Nike and The New York Times, her work is characterized by a unique DIY aesthetic that evokes nostalgia for childhood cartoons. Angela transitioned from a career in graphic design during the pandemic to pursuing animation and illustration full-time. In this episode, Angela emphasizes the value of seeking inspiration beyond the screen. She shares how stepping away from the computer and immersing herself in real-life experiences fuels her creativity and helps avoid repetition. Angela believes that seeking out inspiration off-line allows for a more personal touch in her work, helping her create authentic art that resonates deeply with audiences. Angela's approach to character design is both intuitive and intentional, capturing the essence of human emotion in a playful and engaging way. She draws inspiration from everyday interactions, infusing her characters with a sense of joy and underlying complexity. Her characters—although often simple in form—are designed to be easily animated, allowing their personalities to shine through in motion. She also discusses the importance of community support, the impact of AI on jobs, and why life is hard, but reality TV helps. Šogad festivālu kūrēt esam aicinājuši mākslinieku kolektīvu "Slāvs and Tatars", kura intereses sniedzas no Berlīnes mūra līdz Lielajam Ķīnas mūrim.
No 30. augusta līdz 28. septembrim Rīgā notiks Latvijas Laikmetīgās mākslas centra (LLMC) rīkotais ikgadējais starptautiskais laikmetīgās mākslas festivāls “Survival Kit”. Kultūras Rondo izvaicājam festivāla programmas kuratoru Evartu Melnalksni un Laikmetīgā mākslas centra direktori Solvitu Kresi. Apvienības Slavs and Tatars un Mihala Gžegožeka (Michał Grzegorzek) kūrēto festivāla izstādi “Simurga nams” (House of See-More), kas būs skatāma radošās pilsētas “Grīziņdārzs” telpās Zemitāna ielā 9, papildinās plaša un daudzveidīga programma, tostarp sniedzot iespēju labāk iepazīt par festivāla vadmotīvu izvēlēto mītisko putnu Simurgu.

First in the "Personal Gear Series" episodes. The "Basic Survival Kit" as laid out in TW-01 BASELINE TRAINING MANUAL by Joe Dolio of Tactical Wisdom. We will be adapting it to Project 22:3 style, where I lay out my take on each item in the kit. We are very like minded in our approach to preparedness, and my tweaks are minor in the big scheme of things. Everyone will have their own thoughts on what is important or not in a survival kit. You can customize your kit to meet your needs. Share your thoughts and opinions on X @theProject223 or Instagram @theproject22_3 . We'd love to get your own ideas and comments! Enjoy the show!

In this episode of Never Mind the Dambusters, I take a deep dive into the fascinating and often overlooked world of RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War—through the lens of the airmen's personal flying kit. I'm joined by Daniel Richards an RAF Living History enthusiast, and together we explore the evolution of aircrew equipment, from flying jackets to survival kits, and even the surprising use of pigeons for communication.Using the original clothing card issued to 10 Sqn wireless operator Jack Clyde (Jane's great Uncle) (linked below) , we look at the kit issued to Jack through the course of the war, from boots to parachutes to dinghys! It's a conversation that goes beyond the gear itself, shedding light on the human stories behind the uniforms and the importance of keeping these memories alive for generations to come. Former NFL Linebacker (10 years) Will Compton presents a Bussin With The Boys production, For The Dads! Alongside future dad, Sherman Young, Will a father of two knows how hard the job of a father can be. Thus he created a safe space for dads to come together and talk about the insane shit that we see and deal with every day. In this weeks episode, we see Sherman and Will discuss the week one dad wins and losses for Sherman as he starts his journey into fatherhood. Will berates Sherm for keeping him up playing video games as he was on the night shift for Scarlett. Then, Will talks about his daughters competitive nature growing and becoming like her dad, even going as far as trying to cheat to win. Will and Sherm then talk about dad hacks, including adding protein to food for kids and singing to pass the time by late at night. The boys then listen to call-ins with the first ever international call in, hailing from Australia. To wrap up the show Will shares a lesson on the importance of showing resilience to your child. Buckle up, this week was a doozy… Hope You Enjoy! This week on For The Dads, Sherman opens up about his first full week of fatherhood, sharing both the early wins and the inevitable dad fails that come with newborn life. Will doesn't let him off easy, especially after finding out Sherm kept him up late playing video games while he was supposed to be on the night shift with baby Scarlett. The conversation takes a hilarious turn as Will shares how his daughter's competitive spirit is ramping up—so much so that she’s already trying to cheat her way to victory, just like her old man. As always, the guys drop some practical (and questionable) dad hacks, including how to sneak protein into kid meals and why singing random songs at 2 AM might just save your sanity. Later in the episode, they react to listener call-ins from fellow dads, featuring the show’s very first international call from Australia. To close things out, Will delivers a heartfelt reflection on how important it is to model resilience for your kids, especially during the tougher parenting moments. It’s a raw, funny, and honest dive into what real-life parenting looks like. Whether you’re a new dad, a veteran parent, or just here for the laughs, this episode’s packed with relatable moments and dad wisdom you won't want to miss. Listen to this fascinating chat between two experienced school heads about how to survive and thrive in the role. This is great listening for anyone interested in being a school leader and what its like being in the 'big chair'.
This week on Parenting is a Joke, Ophira Eisenberg welcomes comedian Mike Cannon for a Father's Day–timed conversation packed with raw insight, humor, and real talk about parenting sensitive kids while holding onto your sanity and creative drive. Mike opens up about life with a kindergartner and a seven-month-old, reflecting on how jujitsu helped his son build emotional resilience—and how parenting has forced him to confront his own childhood trauma, OCD, and anger. The two comedians swap stories about navigating vulnerability, shifting identities post-kids, and finding joy (and a little stability) in edibles. Mike also unpacks the internal war he feels before going on stage and how childhood fears shape his on-stage energy. They cover everything from microdosing trends among parents to the strange poetry of seeing your father's face in your baby's crying eyes. He shares how a Don't Tell Comedy set pushed him to reshape his material for younger audiences, while still anchoring it in authentic parenting truths. Plus, he and Ophira bond over their shared frustration with schools punishing behavior by taking away recess—arguably the one thing kids need most.

This month's show really is going down the toilet! That is to say, the downstairs loo of our special guest Matt Skywalker-Jones, which he's turned into a bijou display room. Matt tells all to Andy P, and talks about his collecting journey, and his many vintage passions. Elsewhere, the lads ponder Star Tourism, tell all about their latest finds, and battle it out in the Action Playset Face-Off, which sees a Death Star and an Ewok Village up against not one but two Cantina playsets. Jason hosts this month's quiz, and in New Acquisition shout-outs, we hear about 12-back display shippers, Japanese pencil cases, Peruvian board games, Helix and Letraset shenanigans on eBay, and an HCF pencil pot. A packed Rebel Briefings section sees chat about latest happenings in the collecting universe, as we catch up with a new blog on early Kenner displays, hear about the latest charitable offering from the Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society, recall Thomas Troy's Troop Transporter, take a look at a Palitoy book, a signed Survival Kit and a great Greek gun, before looking ahead to Echo Live and Celebration Japan. Licensee this month is Burger King, as the team sink their teeth into a whopper of a promotion across all three original trilogy movies. Plenty of bluff, bluster and banter besides, look for the podcast in all the usual places.
Ep.235 Alicia Knock Head curator for the Contemporary Creation and Prospective Department at Centre Pompidou. Alicia Knock seeks to develop a transnational history of art. Her acquisitions and exhibitions – Ernest Mancoba, 2019; Chine-Afrique, Crossing the World Color Line, 2020; Global(e) Resistance, 2020 – focus specifically on post-colonial practices (Modern and contemporary African art and Central European art). Concurrently, she is also exploring exhibition formats through dynamic projects that reflect on the future of museums (Museum On/Off, 2016). In 2023, she co-curated Kaunas Biennial, Survival Kit in Riga and Ljubljana graphic arts Biennial focusing on "Long-distance Friendships" and non aligned solidarities between Africa and Eastern Europe. She curated the Albanian Pavilion at the 58th Biennale, and co-curated an exhibition devoted to Boris Mikhailov at the Pinchuk Art Centre in Kyiv in 2019.
