Growing up we both were caught up in the hysteria surrounding the Bermuda Triangle. Much like quicksand and Bigfoot, we were both pretty sure the Bermuda Triangle was going to play a major role in our lives. Turns out, not so much...
Happy Spooky Wednesday, all! Last week, Kala shared some of the most famous disappearances in the infamous Bermuda Triangle! This week, we're talking about the reasons for these disappearances! At the heart of the fiercest international conflicts is the struggle for the future of globalization. In the wake of a pandemic that tested economies and societies, geopolitical conflict has taken on a new intensity. The Rest and the West: Capital and Power in a Multipolar World (Verso, 2024) locates the origins of this development in the turbulent dynamics of the capitalist world market. Rather than reducing global conflict to a matter of great power rivalries or the process of economic decoupling, Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson investigate the increasing centrality of war to capital operations and to the transformation of capitalism. French novelist Alexandre Dumas first published The Count of Monte Cristo as a novel in 1844, and it went on to gain a reputation as one of the most compelling stories ever written. It was adapted into film at least nine different times between 1912 and 2002, according to Wikipedia, not to mention a couple of notable miniseries along the way, and even a Simpsons parody episode. Don't be a square, it's time to get an acute perspective on our latest pick as we sail into a brand-new season! Dan is convinced we're kicking off a “season of shapes” having already prepared notes for The Circle, Hex the Hexagon and the Secret Life of Rectangles but Sarah is here to steer the ship back towards her actual theme: Liminal Space Movies. And we're launching with Christopher Smith's Triangle (2009). This mind-bending entry into the world of time loops takes us far beyond the Bermuda Triangle and into a dreamlike, transitionary world where the rules of reality are flexible. We delve into Melissa George's performance as Jess, a mother whose spontaneous trip on a yacht becomes a punishing exploration of identity. Joining her is Michael Dorman, whose character might be a “nice guy”, we're not quite sure, and a young Liam Hemsworth who is very confident about his Greek mythology pronunciations. From the Overlook Boatel vibes of the ocean liner Aeolus to the meticulously crafted script that rewards repeat viewings, we're trying to get to the hull of what makes this cult movie so special. Just don't ask us to explain the mechanics of the time-loop just yet. Give us another ten thousand years! What to expect from this episode: Sarah attempts to define liminal spaces while Dan wonders if his Tiktok feed of endless swimming pools is actually a cry for help. We discuss whether Christopher Smith reached his magnum opus early with this low-budget indie horror masterclass. A deep dive into Melissa George's incredible ability to maintain emotional continuity. We break down the Sisyphus connections and why pushing a rock up a hill is basically just a 90s retail job. Sarah geeks out about the VFX and that incredible “through the mirror” camera trick. A look at how the UK's National Lottery helped fund this $12 million time loop nightmare with a big foam finger. We explore the purgatory theory and why you should never, ever make a promise to a cab driver in a black suit. Our seemingly traditional mention of Chris Barrie. This season has eight episodes, concluding July 6th Would you like to see the full lineup for season 15? The only place you can see it is on Patreon but you don't need to be a paying member. Happy Spooky Wednesday, dear listeners! This week, Kala has the first part of a two-parter ready and raring to go! This is a subject we've referenced many times, but never covered: The Bermuda Triangle! Connected by southern Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, this vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean has mystified the world for years with its disappearances and tragedies. In our first part, we discuss some of the most famous mysteries of the area. Do you think we covered the most important ones?
Robust, spirited, feisty, vigorous, unyielding, tempered, lively, compelling and intense are just some of the words you won't hear in this episode of Ruck 'n Roll, but several describe the nature of banter in this week's program. You might like to add inane, irrelevant, unprintable, insulting and nonsensical. No more words, time for some music. Our musical journey takes us to the Bermuda Triangle of Top 40 on board a 3XY chart from May of 1985. It has not aged well. Hawaiian Concert Guide Show 703 The Bermuda Triangle Hawaiian Concert Guide Show 703, titled “The Bermuda Triangle”, is structured as a three-point journey through contemporary Hawaiian music, traditional mele, and the stylized mid-century exotica genre. The title reflects this triangular movement—authentic Hawaiian expression, modern interpretation, and the globalized “tiki-era” imagination of island sound. Rather than presenting these as competing styles, this episode places them in dialogue, allowing listeners to hear both contrast and continuity across eras and intentions. The first portion of the show is anchored in contemporary Hawaiian music that remains deeply connected to language, land, and cultural identity. Artists like Ei Nei, Eric Lee, and Kaleo Phillips demonstrate how Hawaiian music continues to evolve while maintaining strong ties to mele traditions, storytelling, and regional pride. The midpoint exotica segment introduces a historical divergence, highlighting how Hawaiian and Pacific imagery was interpreted for global audiences in the mid-20th century. The show ultimately resolves this contrast by returning to the foundational sound of Ho‘okena, whose vocal harmonies and closing oli reconnect the listener with Hawaiian cultural roots. A notable production detail in this episode is the inclusion of material from Eric Lee's album The Islands Are Calling, which features collaborative songwriting contributions, including respected Hawaiian musician and producer Moon Kauakahi. Known for his work with Nā Leo Pilimehana and his influence as a songwriter, arranger, and producer, Moon Kauakahi's involvement adds an additional layer of musical credibility and craftsmanship to the album's compositions. Track-by-Track Reference “Kauikeōlani,” performed by Ei Nei from the album Ei Nei, Look At Us (track 1 of 14, duration 2:18, categorized under Worldwide/Hawaiian contemporary), opens the episode with a composed and reverent tone. Ei Nei is a trio known for its refined vocal harmonies and contemporary production style, often blending Hawaiian language with modern melodic sensibilities. This track functions as a ceremonial introduction, with phrasing and pacing that evoke the structure of a mele inoa, honoring historical and cultural legacy. “Aia I Ka Maui (Ka Maui),” also by Ei Nei from Ei Nei, Look At Us (track 2 of 14, duration 3:15, Worldwide/Hawaiian contemporary), continues with a place-based composition centered on Maui. The song reflects the Hawaiian tradition of mele ʻāina, where land is not simply described but honored as a living entity tied to identity and ancestry. Ei Nei's arrangement balances accessibility with cultural authenticity, making the piece both engaging and meaningful. “The Islands Are Calling,” performed by Eric Lee from the album The Islands Are Calling (track 1 of 10, duration 4:17, Hawaiian genre), introduces a broader melodic structure that leans into contemporary island music while maintaining Hawaiian thematic elements. The song reflects a sense of invitation and connection, often interpreted as a call back to Hawai‘i for those who have left or feel spiritually tied to the islands. The album itself includes collaborative songwriting contributions, with Moon Kauakahi credited as a co-writer on select tracks, reinforcing the project's strong ties to established Hawaiian music traditions. “Hanohano Kilauea Ku I Ka La‘i,” also by Eric Lee from The Islands Are Calling (track 2 of 10, duration 4:02, Hawaiian genre), is a tribute to Kīlauea. The use of the word “hanohano” places the song within the category of praise compositions, aligning with traditional mele that honor significant natural and cultural landmarks. The piece reflects both the physical presence of the volcano and its deeper cultural associations, including its connection to Pele, the Hawaiian deity of fire and volcanoes. “Ka Nani a‘o Ka‘u,” performed by Kaleo Phillips from the album E Mama (track 2 of 13, duration 3:55, Hawaiian genre), highlights the Ka‘ū district of Hawai‘i Island. Kaleo Phillips is recognized for his smooth vocal delivery and emotionally grounded songwriting. This track emphasizes regional pride and the beauty of place, continuing the episode's strong thematic focus on land and identity. “Hilina‘i Mau,” also by Kaleo Phillips from E Mama (track 3 of 13, duration 3:49, Hawaiian genre), provides a reflective and emotionally centered moment in the program. The phrase suggests ongoing trust or reliance, and the song's tone supports this interpretation through its gentle pacing and expressive phrasing. It serves as a transition point before the stylistic shift into exotica. The “Exotica Segment Intro,” credited to pik00 (duration 4:10, categorized as Promo), marks a deliberate transition in the episode. This segment acknowledges a different chapter in the global perception of Hawaiian and Pacific music, one shaped more by imagination and stylization than by cultural authenticity. The intro prepares listeners for this contrast. “Jungle Madness,” performed by :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0} from the album Hypnotique (track 1 of 11, duration 3:35, Exotica genre), is a defining example of the exotica style. Martin Denny is widely regarded as a pioneer of the genre, which emerged in the 1950s and featured layered percussion, environmental sound effects, and an atmospheric approach to composition. While inspired by Pacific imagery, exotica music represents a Western interpretation rather than an authentic Hawaiian tradition. “Wipe Out,” performed by :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1} from the album Hapa Haole with a Twist (track 9, duration 1:04, Exotica genre), offers a brief and energetic surf-style interlude. Les Waikikings, a Belgian group, became known for instrumental surf interpretations with a tropical aesthetic. This track connects the exotica segment with surf rock influences, further illustrating how Hawaiian imagery spread globally in musical form. “Mahukona,” performed by Ho‘okena from the album Ho‘okena 5 (track 14 of 14, duration 4:39, Hawaiian genre), re-centers the episode in authentic Hawaiian music. Ho‘okena is known for its mastery of vocal harmony, including the use of traditional falsetto techniques. The song references Mahukona, a historic harbor area on Hawai‘i Island, continuing the theme of place-based storytelling. “Mele O Nā Kai ‘Ewalu (Oli),” also by Ho‘okena from the album Nā Kai ‘Ewalu (track 1 of 13, duration 1:00, Hawaiian genre), concludes the episode with a chant. As an oli, the performance is unaccompanied and rooted in Hawaiian oral tradition. The title references the “eight seas,” evoking themes of navigation, connection, and heritage. Ending the show with an oli provides a strong cultural resolution, bringing the listener back to the foundational elements of Hawaiian identity. Mahalo for joining us for Hawaiian Concert Guide Show 703, “The Bermuda Triangle.” This episode demonstrates how Hawaiian music exists across multiple dimensions—traditional, contemporary, and interpreted—while always maintaining a core connection to land, language, and culture.
That Don't Sound Right is all about conversation—the kind we had before the internet, when you couldn't fact-check on the spot and the only “experts” were the people sitting nearby. In this episode, Peter and Cecil revisit the childhood fears that felt absolutely real… but mostly never showed up. Quicksand lurking around every corner, the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, sightings of Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster, swarms of killer bees, hidden messages in music, and the ever-present Halloween candy scare—it all felt just believable enough to keep you on edge. With humor and a healthy dose of hindsight, they swap stories about what genuinely worried them growing up and how those fears spread through word-of-mouth, TV specials, and playground rumors. It's a look at how media and myth combined to shape a generation's imagination—long before instant debunking was a click away. Equal parts funny and nostalgic, this episode asks: why did these fears stick with us… and what replaced them today? Listen in, and if something makes you think, that don't sound right… you're in the right place. #tdsrpodcast #ThatDontSoundRight #ChildhoodFears #Nostalgia #Quicksand #Bigfoot #LochNessMonster #BermudaTriangle #KillerBees #HalloweenCandy #UrbanLegends #80sKids #90sKids #PreInternet Connect with us:

His victims were largely marginalized women whose deaths were often misclassified or gone unsolved. Donna is taking the crew on a little cruise aboard the SS Ourang Medan, a ghost ship whose entire crew was found dead, wide-eyed, and pointing at nothing. Whether it was smuggled chemicals, pirates, or something far more sinister, one thing is certain: it makes the Bermuda Triangle look like a kiddie pool. The Bermuda Triangle has been called many things...a graveyard, a vortex, a place where ships and planes simply vanish. But what if the mystery isn't what happened out there… what if it's how the story was built? From abandoned ships with meals still on the stove to entire squadrons disappearing into open sky, today we pull apart the legend piece by piece, looking at the real events, the bad reporting, and the science hiding underneath one of the most famous mysteries in modern history. Remember In Search of Noah's Ark? Chariots of the Gods? The Mysterious Monters? The Outer Space Connection? In the mid-1970s, these odd movies from Sunn Classic or American International Pictures would suddenly appear in your neighborhood theater – and it usually meant that your next Saturday afternoon was spoken for. Bigfoot, psychic powers, UFOS – finally there were films devoted to the scientific study of the things I cared about. Were they scientific? As it turns out, not so much. But were they entertaining? Oh, hell yes. I'd see these things with my cousins or school friends, and we would all get completely freaked out and terrified. In other words, a perfect day at the movies.Author and film historian Gary D. Rhodes remembers these films as fondly as I do and he's written a beautiful book about them called Weirdumentary. In our conversation we cover everything from the Bermuda Triangle to William Shatner to the Loch Ness Monster to Orson Wells to the iconography of the Patterson-Gimlin film to the legendary “Office of Knowledge”!SEE dramatic recreations of Bigfoot attacks! In this episode, Marc and Sanden, aka the Hoax Hunters, investigate this weird and wild patch of water. Turns out the Triangle isn’t as unusual as it seems. Weirdumentary has a forward by Stephen Bissette who wrote a book also likely to be of interest to listeners: Cryptid Cinema (affiliate link) (A follow-up to that book is under construction and will include research by your's truly about the "4-walling" tour of the PGF.) In 1977, a soldier walked into a glowing mist in the Chilean mountains and returned fifteen minutes later with five days of stubble on his face. A pilot flew 250 miles in 34 minutes through a luminous fog over the Bermuda Triangle. An RAF Commander looked down from his biplane and saw an airfield four years before it existed. Two families checked into a French hotel that vanished two weeks later — along with every photo they took inside it. British researcher Jenny Randles spent decades collecting these cases and found they all share the same symptoms: silence, tingling, glowing mist, and broken time. Her conclusion connects UFOs, ghosts, and alien abductions to one phenomenon. The physics backs her up.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLi5LOtzWBs

by UFO History Buff & Author, Charles Lear For many people growing up in the 1970s (of which this writer is one), seeing a UFO documentary was their first in-depth look into the subject. These films often came along with books tied in, and major publishers such as Bantam were getting onboard. More and more people were willing to accept the idea that UFOs were worthy of serious consideration, and this meant that more and more people were willing to spend money on movies and books covering the subject. What had formerly been mostly confined to a subculture of enthusiasts, was now becoming a somewhat profitable entertainment industry. Indeed, it may come as a surprise to some readers, but between the summer of the saucers in 1947, and 1968, there were only two documentaries made in the midst of all the science fiction saucer films that became popular starting in the 1950s.The beginning of the 1970s wave of UFO documentaries can be traced back to the 1968 book Erinnerungen an die Zukunft (Memories of the Future) by Erich von Däniken published by Econ-Verlag in West Germany. The book not only whetted the public's appetite for UFOs and aliens (especially ancient ones), but opened up the doors for all things strange and mysterious, including Bigfoot, the Bermuda Triangle, ghosts, and lake monsters.
