Interview by Kris PetersBlack Rheno seem to be on a bit of a tear at the moment. Last year, they toured the country with their own headline shows, packing out venues and even supported the mighty Pantera. Then, in November, they dropped their first single in a couple of years, Snake Will Rattle. Now, just a few months on, the guys are back with a stack of fresh tour dates, more new music, and video clips—and you know they'll be raising hell on the road.Chopping Heads Wearing Fancy Threads is yet another slab of musical adrenaline from the Sydney trio, mixing sludge, punk and metal with enough attitude to appease even the harshest critic. Put basically, it's what Black Rheno do best, given voice by music. After a couple of years away from the daily grind that accompanies any new music, Black Rheno returned with force late last year with Snake Will Rattle. The track proved Black Rheno had lost none of their edge or quirkiness, returning them to the hearts and ears of an anxious fan base who were starting to count down the days. Now, with the release of Chopping Heads Wearing Fancy Threads, Black Rheno are about to head back out on the road to do what they do best, kicking off on March 2 in Perth and winding its way back to their hometown of Sydney. But if there's one thing surer than the Bombers losing a final, it's that once they start, Black Rheno find it hard to stop.HEAVY caught up with frontman Ryan Miller for all the goss."We've just been really busy and getting busier," he replied when we asked how things have been in the Black Rheno camp, "and loving it. We've got an album we recorded over in the States about a year ago, which we're sort of sitting on at the moment and waiting for the right time to release it. We just wanted to keep putting out music in the meantime and building the band and playing shows and giving ourselves excuses to go do stuff. I've got a studio, so we do a bunch of recordings ourselves. This single and the next couple and the last one we put out are all self produced by us, so we're just getting out and playing shows. Doing what we love."In the full interview, Ryan talks more about the new track Chopping Heads Wearing Fancy Threads which is being premiered via HEAVY on February 17, the musical side of the song and what to expect, keeping a sense of humour and respect within music, the album already recorded in the US and what is happening with it, new music coming out down the track, their upcoming single launch tour, getting back out on the road and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersThey say good things come to those who wait, and if that's the case, Gold Coast melodic technical death metal outfit Snake Mountain have some damn fine times ahead of them.Rather than trying to force themselves onto the international support rollercoaster from the outset, Snake Mountain have preferred to bide their time, practising, waiting, and networking until they felt their product was of high enough standard to put out there. It has been a long and sometimes painful path to the open market, but one gets the impression it will bear the fruits of progress much sooner rather than later. In recent months, Snake Mountain have opened for international heavyweights Fleshgod Apocalypse and Wolfheart, as well as teaming up with Australian royalty in Black Rheno and Witchgrinder, in the process proving their suitability and diversity on any metal lineup as long as it's loud.Following the release of two crushingly brutal singles - Everliving and Extinction Through Fire - Snake Mountain are in the final stages of the long-awaited release of their debut EP Villainous 1: Reverence on July 5. Not content to give the fans new music, the boys have also announced a string of shows along the East Coast over June, July and August so they can share their musical triumphant far and wide.HEAVY cornered Snake Mountain frontman Neville Pearce to find out more."I'm pretty excited about it," he measured when asked about the looming release date. "And I am nervous for people to hear it because I guess it represents where we've been. It's part of a bigger picture that we're trying to paint. We put a lot into it - it's only four tracks - but it shows the different mini-era's of the band and the different members influences that have weaved in and out throughout that time. And I'm really proud of that. That's exactly what the title is in reference to is paying those respects."We ask Pearce to dive deeper into the music side of the EP."It's - as we said before - each song represents, not only the members, but I guess the year they were written," he explained. "The first track, Extinction Through Fire, which we recently released digitally, goes right back to the beginning with Dan Maynard. Then we've got Hunted which was with Dan Maynard, and we have that one with Jamie and Dario then it goes on to All Of Eternia which was Dario and Jamie, and it progresses from there onto the last track Everliving, which was the last single we released. You can sort of tell within those styles how the band has changed and where we've come to now. Which doesn't really represent who we are now with our technical stuff, but it's definitely part of the journey." In the full interview, Neville discusses the length of time it took Snake Mountain to release their debut EP and why, the timeline of each song and what part of the band's history it represents, scoring support slots and what it means to the band, the guest artists on the EP and what they brought to the sound, his transformation from one of the good guys off-stage to a raging demon on, their upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersSydney's merchants of sludge Black Rheno have hit the road again, this time on an East Coast tour of Australia to celebrate… well, to celebrate that they are a touring band and that's what touring bands do!Since announcing themselves with the heavy as fuck and funnier than childbirth single No Time For Numb Nuts back in 2016 Black Rheno have epitomised the very spirit of Australian music, often driving ten hours to play a show while allowing themselves nothing more than cheese and crackers for dinner so they didn't run out of petrol between gigs. You may smirk, but I have seen it first-hand.With a dedication to touring and music almost as complete as their ability to entertain, Black Rheno are one of those bands that manage to make an impression everywhere they go, even sometimes being invited to come back. That tenacious will to do what they love paid handsome dividends earlier this year when Black Rheno joined good mates and equally hard-working Aussie metal larrikins King Parrot for a show with Pantera in Adelaide. Not only was it reward for effort, but it also got the trio so wrapped up in their own achievements they decided then and there to hit the road once more with one thought, and one objective only. To tell the world exactly who they are and why they are here with one simple question that has become the catch cry for the whole tour.Who The Fuck Are Black Rheno?Of course, HEAVY has our own ideas of how that question should be answered, but we felt obliged to speak with frontman Ryan Miller first before announcing it publicly to see if he could sway our opinion one way or another. With the first three shows completed last weekend, we start by asking how their quest for recognition has gone thus far."Good," he enthused. "It was our first time out at Penrith. There's a new venue out there called Elton Chongs and I want to give them a massive plug because they are fucken awesome."Not being able to avoid the elephant lurking in the corner of the room any longer, we broach the name of the tour and suggest that there surely couldn't be many people left who don't know who the fuck Black Rheno are."I'm sure there are plenty," he brushed off dismissively, "but it's more like do we know who Black Rheno is? Do we really know just who we really are? We need to go out and discover who we really are. We have to get to the core of who Black Rheno really is."In the full interview, Ryan discussed the challenges and aspirations related to touring, highlighting the demanding nature of touring in Australia and the intricate process of organizing tours. He expressed his deep appreciation for the touring experience and the thrill of living for the music. The conversation also included details about Black Rheno's recent tour shows in New South Wales, upcoming tour dates in Victoria and Queensland, and the addition of a special show with Wretch in Canberra. He delved into the essence of the band, contemplating their identity and the challenge of encapsulating their music in just a few words. The discussion also touched on their natural, unpretentious stage presence and the significance of touring with local support bands. He also discussed the show with Pantera and how special it was personally and musically, and finished with a plug for the new Black Label beer that is on sale at all but two of the shows.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne stoner/sludge/groove/doom band Goat Sharman are making the trip to the nations capital this weekend for the Canberra Metal Festival featuring Misery, Psycroptic, Abramalin, Werewolves, Alarum, Black Rheno and more. The band have steadily gone about building a loyal, solid fan base since their inception in 2018 and released their debut self titled EP early in 2021. They are currently working on the follow up album, but drummer Max still found time to sit down with HEAVY for a chat about their upcoming shows and more."You can expect some heavy riffage," he replied when quizzed on what punters can expect from their live show. "A bit of shennanigans, some loud noises and we'll just be having a good time grooving."The style of music played by Goat Sharman is dominated by a handful of major bands, and as such the scope for drawing influence from the genre pool may not be as great as bands from, say, the thrash side of things. We ask Max how difficult it is for a band to take those influences and put their own spin on proceedings."There's elements of things that they do that we really enjoy," he measured. "We love playing around with polyrhythms and metric modulations and lots of crazy time signatures and such that we like to incorporate into our music and keep it interesting."In the full interview, Max talks more about this weekends show, which bands he is looking forward to sharing a stage with, the early days of the band, how they came up with their sound, new music, future shows and more.

Interview by Kris PetersSydney based merchants of death metal Anoxia are about to unleash their debut EP, a crushing four track metal journey called Languish In Suffering.Still a band in their infancy, Anoxia have been swiftly making a name for themselves, scoring a number of high profile supports and festival slots based solely on the strength of their 2020 demo Torturous Degradation and uncompromisingly confronting live performances.Gathering old school death metal influences and presenting them with a fresh, modern sensibility, Anoxia sound like a band ready to unleash fury, starting with a slot at this weekend's Canberra Metal Festival alongside Psycroptic, Misery, Black Rheno and more.HEAVY caught up with drummer Marco Alvarez and guitarist Elias Niahos to find out more."We're pretty pumped, it's been a long time coming," Niahos smiled when asked how the boys were feeling only a couple of days out from the release of their debut EP. "We recorded and tracked a couple of years ago now but there were a few issues and it's been a long time coming so it's actually a bit of a weight off our shoulders to get it out there. We're excited for people to hear it. It's just us having fun and trying to make it as heavy and catchy as we can. Putting in effort with no corners cut, plus we have some cool artwork in there from Italy by Paolo, and we had some mates work on it with Matt Clarke who produced it and our mate Tom from Carnal Viscera who did the graphics. It's cool to get friends involved in the process as well.""It's a fortunate thing that we have actually been in the recording process and not released anything," Alvarez added. "Not as Anoxia, but this is the first release that we've been able to do that has gone public, so it's really exciting that we actually have this roaring and ready to go. I'm excited about how far things will get and just the fact that we're doing something that is a labour of love."In the full interview, the boys talk more about the EP and its sound, run us through each of the four songs and explain their origin and meaning, paying homage to the past while keeping an ear on the future, upcoming shows, future plans and more.

Sydney metal outfit Lo! Are one of those rare bands that are impossible to tie down to just one genre. They are, quite purely and simply, a metal band. No deviations. No conforming. No restrictions. And their particular brand of metal is BRUTAL.Their most recent album, 2017's Vestigial, is widely regarded as their best yet with the scary thing being that the band themselves admit there is still much room for improvement. An aggressive, cohesive, and sonically frightening slab of music, Vestigial sees Lo! At their punishing best and as a special present to their hometown fans the band will be performing the album in its entirety for only the second time ever at this weekends Aftermath festival which will be held at Sydney's Factory Floor on Sunday 12.Joining Lo! will be Totally Unicorn, Black Rheno, Mountain Wizard Death Cult and Astrodeath plus a host of some of the best of the next generation of Australian music for a one-day festival that showcases the past, present and future of music in this country.Vocalist Sam Dillon phoned up for a chat earlier this week to talk about Aftermath and what the future holds for Lo!"Gigs for us have been as rare as hen's teeth,” he sighed, a sense of excitement evident in his voice. “The last show we played was Dark Mofo which looked like it wasn't even going to happen because we were all treated like political prisoners in our own state and having to get ourselves down there, but yes, it's going to be a big relief to play this particular album for the hometown crowd in Sydney and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the bands on the line-up. It's a pretty eclectic selection of local guys."While COVID has affected the entire music industry, it is fair to say that the impact has been harder felt by some bands more than others. Many used the spare time to focus on writing music, but when you are a band like Lo! who has built their reputation around the ferocity of your live performances, having that option stripped away overnight makes things that touch more difficult."I think it's definitely been a big blow for everybody creative,” Dillon agreed. “It's that crisis of purpose and ability to find your identity and value in what you create and the crowds that turn up in numbers to live through those songs with you. You take that away and it's a big blow for the industry and the people that create albums. It's also less is more. We're at this stage where we like to be able to control the environment where we're putting the shows through and to have those songs be at their best and their most potent. The ability of us being in isolation was we were able to rethink things and really hone in on why that album is important to us and then also write the new one."In the full interview Sam talks about Aftermath in more detail, the importance of festivals like this for the future of Australian music, playing Vestigial in full and why this could be the last time they do, progress on album number four and what to expect, the pressures of living up to the expectations of fans and more.

One of the beautiful things about the Australian music scene being so tight is that members of bands invariably come together and, in special occasions, form a united new group with which to promote their music. One perfect recent example of this is new Sydney hard rock outfit The Rentagades, who are made up of members from established and recognizable bands Black Rheno and Mountain Wizard Death Cult. When the stars align as such, often pure musical magic is created, as exemplified with The Rentagades and their recent single Shape You Like A Bullet.Band founder and vocalist Scotty joined HEAVY to talk about the new single and being the new kids on the block."It's been a little bit in the making with COVID going on,” he began, “but about 11 months ago I went to one of my besties who owns a studio - David Bleus - and said I wanna put something together that's a bit of a throwback to the 90s high energy rock and roll. I just hadn't heard it in ages. He said let's do it, so we jumped in the studio and started coming up with some riffs and that's where it all started at the end of last year, just me and Dave in his studio, Studio Bleus. Just knocking out riffs and putting some beats together and then I met our drummer Doug Martin at a Fangz gig, of all places (laughs). I was seated with him, because around COVID everything was seated at gigs, so I got placed next to him and it was sort of meant to be. I was talking to him, and he was telling me how he was in a band called Black Rheno - which are a pretty prominent heavy metal band here in Australia - and he said he had just finished up with them, so I said we're looking for a drummer and he was all for it. We got to talking and sent some clips back and forward to each other and he was all aboard. It's sort of a conglomeration where we knew this guy already who is a mate of ours in a band called Mountain Wizard Death Cult and they record here at Studio Bleus so we knew the boys and I went to Tony, who is a kick ass bass player, and that's why I called the band The Rentagades, because..."To find out why listen to the full interview where Scotty also talks more about the debut single Shape You Like A Bullet, why they chose that song to introduce their music to the world, bringing back 90s rock, their next single Monsters, an upcoming EP, touring plans and more.

After exploding onto the local scene with their debut album Redshift, Brisbane metal machine Massic rapidly built up a massive fan base off the back of that release and the intensity of their live performances that often saw vocalist Simon Russell-White crowd surfing through the crowd and dragging punters into his music by sheer ferocity and a tenacious spirit that was instantaneously addictive. They had hoped to capitalise on that momentum with their follow up album late last year but after releasing "Assimilate" towards the latter part of the year Simon suffered serious heart complications while jogging that looked to be the only thing that could halt their charge. It has been well over 18 months since Massic have performed a show, but they return next weekend with a double dose of gigs with Sydney outfit Black Rheno, starting at Mo's Desert Clubhouse on May 7  and finishing with a headlining slot at Southside of Hell at the Mansfield Tavern the following day.Simon and bass player Rashid Alkamraikhi sat down with HEAVY during the week to run through a tumultuous period of the bands' existence and fill us in on what the future holds."We are beyond excited," Simon enthused about finally hitting the stage again. "For me personally its a very surreal experience. I just cant wait to see the boys - not just Black Rheno but my guys and just hang out. Not playing the tunes, just hang out. It's been a weird year and a bit so apart from medical issues and things like that it's just gonna be great playing again.""I've played a few shows with my other band Dr Parallax while Massic's been down," Rashid added, "but it's been a while since it's been full-on Massic so just like Si said super excited to jump back on stage as the unit that we are."While Simon has received medical clearance to resume vocal duties, there was a small period of uncertainty where he was forced to face the harsh reality that his singing career could be over."It's been a life-changing experience," he sighed, "but Im better for it, I've never felt better. I cant crowd surf any more and stuff like that but Rashid had a great idea with the blow-up version of me to go to the crowd which I think would be an absolute hoot""Like a Japanese sex pillow," Rashid laughed."A near-death experience is absolutely insane," Simon continued, "but thankfully I've got amazing people around me that rallied around me and I've never been happier and felt better. Blood pressure was obviously quite an issue but I feel a million bucks, I really do. It's just great to be around, I just feel so fucken great."In the full interview the boys talk more about facing up to the fact that Massic may have ceased to be, the progress on the bands upcoming album, when it is likely to be released, its musical direction including slight changes to Massics sound and delivery, future plans and more.

Today marks a new dawning for Australian music with the announcement of Cult Etiquette, an all-new PR company that is dedicated to servicing the world of rock, punk, hardcore, metal and every sub-genre in between.Made up of a trio of identities well known in the music scene in this country, Cult Etiquette is the brainchild of Ryan Miller, vocalist for Sydney metal masters Black Rheno. Completed by Glenn Dyson from Soundworks Touring and Mariano Palomares (graphic artist and touring musician with Black Rheno), Cult Etiquette isn't the result of a profit-driven corporation but is more a collection of people in the music industry that have the knowledge, dedication and professional drive to ensure success."This is our life, this is what we're constantly doing all the time," enthused Miller. "Essentially, the main thing we do is getting the band's attention and getting them heard. If you've got a single or an album or a video - whatever it is that your band's doing that's interesting that you want people to find out about - you get us to contact the media and all the different online publications and street press and we go and liaise with the media for you. On top of that, we want to help band's get their stuff together. We do things professionally and in a way that presents the band's so that the gatekeepers of the industry take them seriously and they're not just another band mucking around in the pub. There's nothing wrong with that if that's what you want to do but we are here to help people plan out and actually have a set structure. So many people don't sit down and write down where they want to be in the next three or four years or know how to get there and the steps. Sometimes its common sense stuff but sometimes you need someone to point out common sense stuff to you and sometimes you just need to sit down and do it. If you haven't done it before or haven't spent a lot of time doing it, it can be a case of where do you start? We help package what band's are doing in a way that presents well. You don't want to manufacture an image that doesn't suit you. You've got to work out who you are and bounce off that. People like to see genuine musicians and band's that are true to themselves."While the benefits of a DIY campaign are obvious financially, it can be difficult for a person to adequately promote themselves or their band due to the simple fact that it can be uncomfortable heaping praise on yourself. On top of that, the workload alone is staggering and often takes valuable time away from the artist as they struggle to keep up with even basic protocols that are essential to a good campaign. These sorts of things are often done more effectively by a third party, which is where Cult Etiquette comes in."Exactly," Miller nodded. "With contacting the media, if people want to sit down for a few weeks collecting a couple of hundred emails they can do that. I've done it and it takes a lot of time (laughs). People can do it but the reality is it takes so long and if you're working a five-day job and jamming twice a week and writing and pushing all your music, how well can you do every single thing effectively? Having people like us takes that out of it. We have the contacts, we know who to speak to, we know what time schedules and different radio programs to get you on. Having that person involved representing you sometimes carries that little extra weight to it. People can take you more seriously."Understanding that every musician or band requires individual representation, Cult Etiquette offers custom made plans for every campaign. There is no generic template that is chopped and changed for effect. Instead, each campaign is set up around what works best for that occasion, with full consultation and approval each step of the way."That's what its all about," Miller affirmed. "We're not out to be the agency that has the hugest rosters with hundreds of bands. We're out to work on behalf of bands that we really dig. We're looking to work with band's that are doing things that we genuinely love so that when we go out there we can represent them with proper passion and enthusiasm. You need character in the band. There might be someone that's got an interesting persona for example so it's about finding what it is in that group that we can latch onto that is cool and interesting."One important factor to understand is that Cult Etiquette is not a label. They are a PR company that is utilized for a particular purpose with a particular outcome and as such are contracted only for the duration of your selected campaign."We're not a label," Miller stressed. "Just like when you hire a plumber to come around and fix your taps you hire them to do a service and that's the same as what we do. We don't want anyone's rights to anything. You're just hiring us to work on your behalf and market and promote your band."As a band you can have all of the potential in the world at your disposal but unless people know who you are and what you are producing that will amount to little. A Facebook post here and an Instagram update there might get you to a select and limited audience but the true value lies in getting the word out to as many people a possible which is another area Cult Etiquette specialises in."You can be the sickest band around but if you don't market and promote it then no-one will know about you," Miller said. "Think about your favourite bands. How do you find out they are coming on tour? Because they advertise on HEAVY and they have a poster up on the wall of the venue and they have interviews and press releases being sent out to all the different media. That's how you know because the publicity agency is working on their behalf and spreading the word."Cult Etiquette officially launches today. Dead of Winter Festival is fast approaching, featuring possibly the finest line up of home grown talent this year. With such an abundance and variety of bands performing, Jake Laderman, drummer for one of the headliners, Clowns, says that being a part of proceedings is more fun than work."I think with things like this where there is just so many friends it's a little bit hard not to party," he laughed. "We've got so many friends from different states and so many cool bands... I'm probably just speaking for myself but it makes me really excited to go and play music and have a good time with everybody. I would say we won't be chilling that much... just a guess (laughs)."Clowns explored new territory with last years album 'Lucid Again', with a - dare we say it - more mature approach to the music and Laderman concedes even with the benefit of more than twelve months to analyze the finished product that the band is more than happy with the changes."Yeah, definitely," he affirmed. "It was a record where we tried a lot of new things and really wrote the album that we wanted to write. We have a really strict rule about not wanting to do the same thing all the time. We always wanna try new things and it keeps it interesting. 'Lucid Again' definitely has the most curveballs on it. We've got a record that we're working on currently that has a few curve balls on it in other ways with different directions and stuff like that on it."To hear more details about the next album, including when we can expect it, plus everything you need to know about Dead of Winter from an artists perspective, how the band is feeling about playing at Wacken Open Air, and some interesting things about overseas performing and a bit of early history on the band, tune in to the full audio interview.Kris PetersDEAD OF WINTER will be held over two venues - The Jubilee Hotel and The Tivoli - on July 7 and features Clowns, Frenzal Rhomb, Polaris, Ocean Grove, Pangaea, Alien Weaponry, Nancy Vandal, Desecrator, Black Rheno, Blowhard, Massic and heaps more. "You can expect our usual crazy shit that we do," laughed Black Rheno drummer Dougy, promoting their current tour The Final Cult. "Ryan will be running out there and stealing your drinks and pouring them on his scalp as usual. We're going pretty hard at it. We're playing three or four tracks off the new album that's gonna be coming out soon which everyone seems to like (laughs)."Since forming in 2015 Black Rheno have gone from strength to strength, partly through talent and largely through their relentless touring schedule that has seen them progress from supporting other Australian metal acts this time last year to now headlining their own tour. It is a process which Dougy admits was a solid plan from the get-go, with the band making an early and conscious decision to put it all on the line."Definitely, yeah," he agreed. "We had the Thrash, Blast and Grind Fest and then we did the tour with Napalm Death and Brujeria in October which was crazy -fuck, its Napalm Death (laughs). We always had this planned. While we were writing the album and getting the demos done and all that we thought fuck it, we don't wanna sit here staying stagnant, we've gotta do something so we decided to put together a headlining tour before we started recording so it was always on the books."The bands E.P, Let's Start A Cult has been instrumental in the band's current success, with its blend of stoner, sludge and metal - not to mention the title - striking a chord with fans around the country."It's pretty much as the title says," Dougy laughed. "It's what we wanna do (start a Black Rheno cult). We love playing music; we love recording; we love playing shows and we wanted to start something big. Cult's get pretty fucken big don't they (laughs)?"To find out what you have to do to become a part of Black Rheno's cult, plus where the current tour is headed plus find out what sorts of lessons a smaller band learns from bigger supports and Black Rheno's plans for world domination plus the scoop on the new album listen to the attached audio.Kris Peters

"Sydney's new masters of all things heavy Black Rheno, have left an undeniably blistering mark on the Australian heavy music scene since their inception late in 2015 and debut EP release “Let’s Start A Cult”. In 2017 having already smashed crowds nationwide on The Thrash Blast Grind Fest through February alongside King Parrot, Revocation and Psycroptic, the boys were then invited to showcase at Austin Texas's prestigious South By South West Festival in March. Not content with slowing down they hosted their own “Housefox Fest” in April proving that Black Rheno are putting in the hard yards and holding nothing back!" Ben talked to Doug about their upcoming Gopsel Of Heavy tour with Hadal Maw, their experience at South By South West and their video for No Time For Numb Nuts. Aired 22nd June 2017.
