This week we're discussing every album by Eyehategod. From New Orleans, Eyehategod are one of the most quintessential sludge metal bands that exists. Led by vocalist Mike IX Williams and guitarist Jimmy Bower, this band has been through hell since their formation in 1988. But they're still going strong after being wrecked with drug abuse, incarceration, and death. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patreon https://www.patreon.com/everyalbumever Merch https://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/ Mike's EP: Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple, Mike on Instagram @pandermonkey Alex on Bluesky @octatron3030 Tom on Instagram @tomosmansounds History Tom's stuff: Music on Spotify, Apple Podcast on Spotify, YouTube Substack Website ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike's Picks: In the Name of Suffering (1990) -- Best Album, Personal Favorite Take as Needed for Pain (1993) -- Worst Album, Least Favorite Alex's Picks: Take as Needed for Pain (1993) -- Best Album Eyehategod (2014) -- Personal Favorite A History of Nomadic Behavior (2021) -- Worst Album, Least Favorite Albums we discussed this episode... If punk rock were a war zone, then the Dwarves would be the band barreling through it in a flaming van, middle fingers raised, amps cranked to 11, and blood still dripping from last night's gig. Formed in the 1980s in Chicago, the Dwarves became infamous not just for their music, but for their pure commitment to never giving a damn. Fast, loud, and offensively proud, their sound is a dirty cocktail of hardcore punk, garage rock, and shock-value stage antics that could make even G.G. Allin flinch. At the heart of this madness is Blag Dahlia, the velvet-voiced villain with a smirk as sharp as his lyrics. Blag isn't your typical punk shouter—he's a crooner of filth, delivering twisted tales of sex, violence, and satire with a voice that sounds like Elvis Presley lost a bet and joined a biker gang. Whether he's wearing a feather boa or bleeding from a mic stand injury, he commands the stage like a glam-rock devil who wandered into the wrong basement show and made it his throne.Over the decades, the Dwarves have become legends in the underground, not because they followed the rules—but because they lit them on fire. Their live shows are the stuff of punk folklore: sets barely over fifteen minutes, instruments destroyed, nudity, arrests, and occasionally someone getting clocked in the face. Yet somehow, amid all the chaos, the music remains tight, catchy, and unmistakably them—riffs that bite and lyrics that cackle at societal norms. What separates Blag from the rest of punk's chaos cult leaders is his mind. Behind the band's provocations and obscene album covers is a guy who's sharply articulate, darkly funny, and undeniably intelligent. He's written books, dabbled in podcasts, and can quote literature just as easily as he can scream “Let's get drunk and f**!”* on stage. He might play the villain, but he's got philosopher bones under all that leather and glitter. The Dwarves' discography is a glorious mess—albums like Blood Guts & Pussy, The Dwarves Are Young and Good Looking, and How to Win Friends and Influence People aren't just punk records; they're declarations of war against the sanitized and the safe. And Blag? He's the warlord, waving a flag made from a torn fishnet shirt and a bottle of Jack.In a world where many punk bands soften with age, the Dwarves and Blag have only gotten sharper, stranger, and more delightfully unapologetic. They've aged like a beer can left in the sun—dented, dangerous, and likely to explode when shaken. And that's exactly how their fans like it.https://thedwarves.com/

Mike IX Williams, the voice of New Orleans for lack of a better term "sludge" pioneers Eyehategod, embodies the unrelenting grit of the genre. Raised in High Point, North Carolina, he gravitated toward rebellion and punk before finding his footing in the music scene of late-70s New Orleans. Over the years, he's faced addiction, incarceration, Hurricane Katrina, and a liver transplant, emerging as a testament to survival against the odds. Mike's music channels the chaos of a life shaped by struggle and defiance, capturing an unvarnished reflection of the world around him.
In the 68th episode of The Metal Maniacs Podcast, hosts Jay Ingersoll and Modd bring listeners the ninth installment of their popular reaction series. This time, they turn their attention to some of Michigan's heaviest and most underground bands, offering a raw, unfiltered look at what's happening in the state's extreme metal scene. Jay and Modd dive deep into six distinct bands, giving their honest reactions and breaking down what makes each group stand out. Whether you're a fan of doom, death metal, sludge, or metalcore, this episode has something for everyone. First Up: Slugchild The episode kicks off with Grand Rapids' extreme metal outfit, Slugchild. Released on August 11, 2023, the band's album Wounds Untold is filled with brutal energy and complex instrumentation. Slugchild brings a mix of aggressive riffs, guttural growls, and atmospheric touches that set them apart from the standard extreme metal fare. Jay and Modd take on the track “Tumbled Nest,” “A Collapsing Lung, Heard Faintly.” The duo agrees that Slugchild's production, handled by Addison Eilers at Analog Time Machine and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege, brings a polished yet chaotic sound that truly captures the band's intensity. https://slugchild.bandcamp.com/album/wounds-untold Bog Wizard: Nerd Doom at its Finest Next, the hosts react to **Bog Wizard**, a West Michigan band that blends doom, sludge, and stoner metal with heavy fantasy and tabletop RPG themes. Describing their sound as “nerd doom,” Bog Wizard taps into the satanic panic era with a unique twist. Jay and Modd dive into the song “Barbaria”. For fans of slow, heavy metal with a twist of fantasy, Bog Wizard is an essential listen. https://bogwizard.bandcamp.com/ Speed and Power with Battalion The tone shifts to speed and power metal with **Battalion**, one of Michigan's legendary metal acts hailing from Ann Arbor. Their track “Final Solution,” from the album *Excessive Force*, showcases their precision, intensity, and relentless energy. Jay and Modd note the galloping riffs and piercing vocals that characterize Battalion's sound. https://battalion999.bandcamp.com/ ### Room 101: A Dive into Experimental Doom/Death Metal Next on the docket is Lansing's own **Room 101**, a band that fuses doom, sludge, and death metal with experimental and psychedelic elements. Room 101 draws influence from heavyweights like Neurosis, Crowbar, and Eyehategod, but they add their own unique twist with experimental flair. Jay and Modd react to the track “11:59,” where they highlight the crushing riffs, deep growls, and atmospheric elements that create a sense of impending doom. https://room101.bandcamp.com/ Nothing After This: The Metalcore/Post-Hardcore Blend From doom and death metal, the podcast moves on to metalcore with **Nothing After This**, a genre-blending band from Metro Detroit. Jay and Modd react to their two-step-ready track, appreciating the balance between old-school metalcore and modern influences. They also mention that Nothing After https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100090506806126 Gokseong: Korean Ghost Stories Brought to Life in Metal The episode concludes with a look at **Gokseong**, a band that draws from Korean mythology to create a chilling atmosphere in their music. Their debut track “Mul Gwisin” tells the story of Korean water ghosts, unsettled spirits who drag unsuspecting victims to their watery graves. J As always, the episode is filled with the hosts' signature humor and insight. Jay and Modd bring their deep knowledge of metal to the table, while keeping things light with plenty of jokes and banter. They encourage listeners to check out the bands featured in the episode and to support their local metal scene. Whether you're into extreme metal, doom, sludge, or metalcore, this episode offers something for everyone. Follow us-https://linktr.ee/metalmaniacsmi

Interview by Kris PetersHeavy metal and blues music have a long history that is ignored by some and refuted by others, but when push comes to shove there can be no denying the two genres can not only co-exist in the same musical realm, but also owe much of their existence to the influence of the other. This is perhaps no more evident than in the case of New Orleans sludge metal outfit EYEHATEGOD, who combine the sounds of southern rock, blues riffs and hardcore punk to create a musical division of their own that while being unashamedly metal is still a bastardised love child of centuries of history and tradition that has come before.Born into a musical climate that shunned their very existence and forced them to evolve, adapt and create unto themselves to negotiate the treacherous waters of the music industry, the band have gone on to become a dominant force, with many bands citing EYEHATEGOD as being hugely influential on their own career trajectory. They are a band with no master and therefore no guiding light other than their own darkness and have become such a pivotal catalyst in the amalgamation of musical diversity that Phil Anselmo, Pepper Keenan and Randy Blythe have all crossed musical paths on their journeys, with each leaving better for the experience. With EYEHATEGOD on the cusp of their first Australian tour in half a decade with Goatwhore, vocalist Mike IX sat down for a chat with HEAVY to tell us more."It's gonna get crazy," he laughed. "It will definitely get weird at some point."When talk turns to the early days of EYEHATEGOD Mike was unapologetic in regards to their early insistence to do things that made them happy, not that were considered safe or acceptable."We didn't fit in," he shrugged. "People hated us. People couldn't stand us. We had very few fans locally. The climate back then was still mostly thrash metal with bands doing the Exodus, Slayer type of thing. There was a lot of different styles, but there was some hardcore punk bands, then there was the thrash stuff. There wasn't a lot new going on at the time. We were big fans of Black Sabbath and Black Flag and all these bands, so we thought let's just do that. That's all we wanted to do."In the full interview, Mike talks more about the upcoming tour and what to expect, what has changed with EYEHATEGOD since their last visit, the name of the tour and what significance that has on what we can expect, touring with Goatwhore, putting local supports at each show, new material and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This episode features Mike IX from Eyehategod, where he discusses significant milestones from his and the band's career. Mike reflects on the impact of their debut album, "In the Name of Suffering," and looks back on the band's studio reunion with the 2014 self-titled album. He provides insights into making the 1993 epic "Take as Needed for Pain" and shares stories of memorable live shows and touring challenges. Interview by Kris PetersThey say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and if that is true, then crushing extreme metal outfit Goatwhore will be earning themselves plenty of hugs when they return to Australia this July as part of the Turn Troubled Tables Tour with Eyehategod.Goatwhore have been absent from our shores for almost a decade, last venturing over to this side of world for a brutal run of shows with Psycroptic in 2015. Now, two albums and a shit tonne of shows later, the masters of all they survey are preparing for another assault on our senses, with guitarist Sammy Duet telling HEAVY in a recent chat that the band have some unfinished business with Australian fans."We've put out a couple of records (since the 2015 tour)," he affirmed. "Not much else. I've got a lot more grey in my beard now since the last time I was in Australia (laughs)."We ask Sammy what we can expect from their shows."Lots of loud, Satanic heavy metal," he promised. We pushed him further on the live shows by asking what the band expects in return from their crowds."I like them to do whatever they feel like doing," he shrugged. "If they feel like getting wild and getting crazy, get wild and crazy. If you feel like sitting back and watching and observing, that's cool too. Whatever Satan takes hold of your soul and makes you wanna do, do it."In the full interview, Sammy tells us where the name Goatwhore came from, talks about the early days of the band and where they fit in, describes the musical climate that gave birth to Goatwhore, their brutal combination of genres and how they blend together to make the Goatwhore sound, his reaction to people who label the band controversial, how far advanced their next album is and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In this chat with Exhorder's Kyle Thomas, we explore the band's album "Defectum Omnium," set to release via Nuclear Blast in early March 2024. Kyle sheds light on the album's themes alongside discussions about the inspiration behind their music. We also delve into the recent addition of Pat O'Brien from Cannibal Corpse to the band and Exhorder's connections with fellow New Orleans bands like Eyehategod and Phil Anselmo. The conversation takes a deeper dive into specific tracks, such as "The Tale of Unsound Minds". Furthermore, Kyle addresses Exhorder's perspective on comparisons to Pantera and reflects on the current political landscape, particularly in light of authoritarian measures during the COVID era.
Eyehategod's approach to extreme music quickly set them apart from their contemporaries in the New Orleans scene. While many of these groups took influence from band's like Black Sabbath and the Melvins, Eyehategod's feedback-fueled sound was far more abrasive, bleaker, and grating. The lyrics, while satirical at times, dove head first into themes of addiction and trauma. This was reality, and the music reflected it. With a few full-lengths, 7-inch's, & splits under their belt, the band worked alongside producer Billy Anderson (Buzzoven, Neurosis, Sleep) and scene veteran Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Graveyard Rodeo) to help shape their third album. While this definitely elevated the recording, the raw intensity never faltered. From those initial glass-shattering, tortured screams of Mike IX Williams, the listener knows they're in for a rude awakening. In this 2nd installment of our Sammy Duet trilogy, we look back to where it all began. While bands like Crowbar and Eyehategod were starting to make waves in the city of New Orleans, a group of outliers were creating noise well ahead of their time further south. They wore their influences on their sleeves combining the grooves of Sabbath, the intensity of Discharge, and the artistry of The Doors. No idea was left on the table, which made for a very eclectic debut release. With artwork that perfectly matched the album's dark lyrical themes, it instantly made a statement in the underground. Due to their brief history as an active band, their discography (as well as their story) has long been a topic of discussion amongst diehard circles. With a backstory involving collaborations with RCA recording artist Ke and various artist on major labels like RCA, Touch and Go, BMG and Universal, it is no surprise that Evidence of a Struggle would evolve. Chicago-based Evidence of a Struggle presents 'Bisquee', the moody oscillating third single from their forthcoming 13-track eponymous album, to be released on June 9. The accompanying video is the newest offering from a six-chapter audio-visual storybook, created by Chicago artist John Airo, who has been involved with this project since the outset - creating videos, album covers and accompanying visuals for live performances. This engaging off-kilter post-rock offering follows the cinematic debut single 'Do'Oa', a wonderful fusion of Tortoise and Dif Juz, and 'Alan's Song' - the sound of fear, beauty and hubris. The sound of a beautifully crumbling grand distraction. Surrounding the musings of multi-instrumentalist William P C Simmons V a.k.a. Rev. Billy Simmons, Evidence of a Struggle is an evolving group of artists and musicians whose sonic creations may lead you to the center of the darkness or just might unfurl the universe before you with lush, cinematic, beautiful, and sometimes chaotic compositions. Evidence of a Struggle began in 2020 during lockdowns. This ambitious effort sees Rev. Billy play every instrument – guitar, drums, piano, synth and violin - recorded and engineered from his home studio, The Glue Factory. With Covid restrictions lifted, he began working with Sanford Parker (Voivod, Russian Circles, Yob, Eyehategod, Wovenhand, Darkthrone, Youth Code, Pelican), who helped produce and record the final versions of the songs for this record, as well as mastering. #NewMusic #StoryTelling #Interview #Live

Their visceral heavy sound is grounded in an aggressively melodious genre-fusing experience. Since their formation in 2014 they have been featured on Miami New Times as part of the essential metal bands to see when visiting. BLEETH's self released 2015 EP, Re-animator, took them touring up and down the East Coast, ultimately catching the attention of Anti-Language Records (LA), who released the bands first full-length album Geomancer on August 3rd, 2018. Geomancer helped establish BLEETH on a national level, with coverage on Decibel, Revolver, Invisible Oranges, and more. After completing East Coast, Midwest tour and Florida tours., the band returned to the studio to work on their next album. Ryan Haft, an established live sound "go-to" for bands like Torche, Red Fang, Eyehategod, Big Business, OM, and more, recorded and mixed the band's forthcoming release. The new songs mark “a shift in a new direction”—shorter and faster than past records, with particular emphasis on atypical tunings and arrangements. Appropriately titled, Harbinger, delves into internal struggles the band had with faith in self, public institutions, moral authority, and the afterlife. BLEETH has a growing fear that new technology and crisis would bring our society closer towards authoritarianism. The album title Harbinger is a reference to the omens these internal struggles imply for the future of human society. “BLEETH's sound is already massive, full of angst and virtuosity. They provide us with yet another example of the true Miami contemporary metal sound: heavy bass, guitar riffs that balance complex melodies with foggy atmosphere, and drums with a Latin groove. “-Bandcamp Scene Report : “Diving into Miami's Doom and Sludge Sound” Special thanks to Ben Sharp of Cloudkicker for the ATI Podcast open! August 'Best Of' suggests that the Podcast is taking an ever increasing shift into more extreme metal territory considering the sparse number of hard /classical rock bands that are featuring during the last few months. Having said that, sludge bands are having to expand their sound to get a look in after years of listening to this type of music and becoming somewhat numb to the monotony of a lot of this genre. This has been demonstrated by The Master Of Suspense by Sithter becoming my Sludge album of August due to the fact that, although there is definitely an element of Eyehategod worship going on here, there is sufficient punk/crust overtones married with a raw guitar sound to make this album stand out. I guess similar could be said about the other bands that made the list, Stone Nomads for example could easily have been my Doom album of the month, such is the constant shifting between doom and stoner influences within their Fields Of Doom album, however I had to go for the enormity of the droning sounds of Morbid Evils to fill that particular slot. New Orleans brukar kallas "the big easy". No new chapter this week; instead, Diary of Doom is putting out one of its previously Patreon-exclusive episodes in which Dylan delves into the deeper catalogs of doom, stoner, and sludge bands that aren't Electric Wizard, Sleep, or Eyehategod. We've got a few more of these that we will be putting out over the coming months and hope to do more down the line. From the original post: The first deep dive chapter chronicles the discography of Cape Fear sludge band, Sourvein. Dylan and frequent guest, August West, dissect the band from their dirty southern roots to their current aqua-sludge themes. Albums covered: Sourvein (2000) Will to Mandle (2002) Emerald Vulture (2005) Ghetto Angel (2008) Imperial Bastard (2008) Black Fangs (2011) Aquatic Occult (2016) This episode was originally released on Jan. 1, 2022.
