Hotels used to stand at the top of some of Vermont's mountains, like Mount Mansfield, Camel's Hump, Snake Mountain and Mount Equinox. Mary Skelton spent eight childhood summers at the Mount Mansfield Summit Hotel. It was a hotel her dad managed, and he served as the hotel's postmaster. In this episode, Mary talks about the old hotel on Vermont's highest mountain, her joyful memories, and the end of an era.
Interview by Kris PetersThey say good things come to those who wait, and if that's the case, Gold Coast melodic technical death metal outfit Snake Mountain have some damn fine times ahead of them.Rather than trying to force themselves onto the international support rollercoaster from the outset, Snake Mountain have preferred to bide their time, practising, waiting, and networking until they felt their product was of high enough standard to put out there. It has been a long and sometimes painful path to the open market, but one gets the impression it will bear the fruits of progress much sooner rather than later. In recent months, Snake Mountain have opened for international heavyweights Fleshgod Apocalypse and Wolfheart, as well as teaming up with Australian royalty in Black Rheno and Witchgrinder, in the process proving their suitability and diversity on any metal lineup as long as it's loud.Following the release of two crushingly brutal singles - Everliving and Extinction Through Fire - Snake Mountain are in the final stages of the long-awaited release of their debut EP Villainous 1: Reverence on July 5. Not content to give the fans new music, the boys have also announced a string of shows along the East Coast over June, July and August so they can share their musical triumphant far and wide.HEAVY cornered Snake Mountain frontman Neville Pearce to find out more."I'm pretty excited about it," he measured when asked about the looming release date. "And I am nervous for people to hear it because I guess it represents where we've been. It's part of a bigger picture that we're trying to paint. We put a lot into it - it's only four tracks - but it shows the different mini-era's of the band and the different members influences that have weaved in and out throughout that time. And I'm really proud of that. That's exactly what the title is in reference to is paying those respects."We ask Pearce to dive deeper into the music side of the EP."It's - as we said before - each song represents, not only the members, but I guess the year they were written," he explained. "The first track, Extinction Through Fire, which we recently released digitally, goes right back to the beginning with Dan Maynard. Then we've got Hunted which was with Dan Maynard, and we have that one with Jamie and Dario then it goes on to All Of Eternia which was Dario and Jamie, and it progresses from there onto the last track Everliving, which was the last single we released. You can sort of tell within those styles how the band has changed and where we've come to now. Which doesn't really represent who we are now with our technical stuff, but it's definitely part of the journey." In the full interview, Neville discusses the length of time it took Snake Mountain to release their debut EP and why, the timeline of each song and what part of the band's history it represents, scoring support slots and what it means to the band, the guest artists on the EP and what they brought to the sound, his transformation from one of the good guys off-stage to a raging demon on, their upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersIt makes sense that someone who is already in a band would also want to dip their toes into promotion and putting on shows themselves, but it's not as easy of a process as you would think.Dealing with bands and booking for bands is another stress level of its own, and often the two - although seemingly perfect bedfellows - are too difficult to negotiate. It takes a special kind of person with an honest and genuine love of music to successfully blend the two into a functioning unit, and even then the constant source of emails and phone calls can become too much of a burden. One such person who has managed to combine both passions without completely losing his sanity (yet) is Brisbane guitarist for Dirty Brew and head of Brewhouse Productions, Mick Brew. Mick is a well-known and highly respected member of the local music scene and has been juggling his time and energy between both band and promotions for a number of years now. He has put on a consistently large number of successful shows and played at some of those and other big-name festivals, but his sights presently are firmly set on Brewhouse Production's annual end-of-year celebration of music to be held at The Back Room, Annerley on December 30.Featuring Counterfeit Limp Bizkit Show, F.U.C., Krave, Snake Mountain, We The Hollow, Dirty Brew and others, the annual bash will house 20 bands over two stages in one afternoon/night of entertainment that celebrates everything that is good about Australian music.HEAVY managed to track Mick down recently to chat about the event and the constant demands of the music industry."It's gonna be a big day," he smiled. "Doors are at 12 with the first band starting around one o'clock. I just need to finalise those set times this week. It should be good. There's already a fair few tickets sold and if it's anything like last year, we sold nearly 400 tickets, so hopefully we can do that again."While many people call the annual event a New Years Eve Party, this year it will be held the night before New Years Eve on Saturday, December 30. It seems like a good idea to us, but we ask Mick why he isn't keeping it to the actual date of New Years Eve so people can remember more easily."To be honest, New Years Eve was on a Sunday and everyone has the Monday off or whatever, but last year when it was on the Saturday and the Monday was a holiday it just gives you those extra couple of days," he explained. "It's not so much a New Years Eve party anymore, it's more of an end-of-year party for everyone to tell the whole year to get fucked and start again."In the full interview, Mick runs through a few of the bands playing and why he put them on the bill, where to get cheaper tickets from, how to help out bands by buying direct from them, the venue and why it is the perfect place for live music, the range of sponsors on the night, future plans and more.
Interview by Kris PetersWhat better way to celebrate your 13th birthday than to return to your spiritual home; the place where it all began?Which is exactly what Wallapalooza are doing this year when the festival returns to its birthplace at The Wallaby Hotel on November 4 for a music extravaganza unlike any seen on the local circuit for some time.Spearheaded by COG, Wallapalooza 2023 also features 28 Days, Butterfingers, Anty!, F.U.C, Dreamkillers, Azreal, PistonFist, Kaosphere, Snake Mountain and plenty more in what promises to be an Australian festival for music lovers of all tastes. After slaying last year's event, 28 Days return to up their game even more this year, with bass player Damo joining HEAVY to discuss more."We haven't played with COG for probably fifteen years I reckon," he began, "so it will be good to catch up with those guys again. We always used to play freezer gigs with them - like all ages things back in the day - so, yeah, it will be awesome."Last year's event was held at the nearby Mudgeeraba Showgrounds, which gave the show an outdoors feel and was a huge success, so we hit Damo up to see how he feels about returning to more of a pub feel for 2023."Last year was cool, it was huge," he smiled, "and it probably would have been too much of a task to pull it off every year. We actually stayed at The Wallaby Hotel last year (laughs) and they kind of walked us through the layout of when it was always there, so it will be cool. It will be ace to get there and play. We like those kind of 'little' festivals. The 2000 type people ones. They just seem more intimate, but still with enough of a crowd to make it really hyper."In the full interview, Damo talks more about the benefits of having 100% Australian band festivals, what we can expect from 28 Days, the early days of the band and the musical climate that created them, hitting commercial success with Upstyledown and why he thinks people connected with that album, the possibility of new music from 28 Days and more.
Interview by Kris PetersGold Coast metal titans Snake Mountain have never been one of those bands to go with the flow.Instead, they have adopted a kind of Cobra Kai attitude of strike first, strike hard and not only become an integral part of the local live music scene, but also a proactive and fundamental link in what is becoming an increasingly more delicate chain.Tonight (September 15) Snake Mountain return to Mo's Desert Clubhouse in Burleigh Heads to spearhead Brutal Coast 4, an annual celebration of live music which they initially started to provide exposure for local bands but what has now become a highlight on the Gold Coast music calendar.Vocalist and all round top bloke Neville Pearce joined HEAVY to tell us more."I think it sounds kind of cool," he laughed when we point out the event name is actually quite intimidating. "You've got to have a cool name. I like having that branding on it. It sounds evil but it's not. We're all happy metalheads (laughs)."When it started four short years ago, Brutal Coast was but a simple idea but over the years has developed into more of a lifeblood of sorts for the local music scene."I just wanted to put together a line-up that was a little bit more diverse than the usual shows we play," he recalled. "Which there's nothing wrong with those because we love doing the heavy, heavy stuff, but I wanted to put on something where it was more diverse with sub genres where you have a bit of melodic metal, or you have a bit of hardcore or you'll have maybe a tribute. I just wanted something that brought all different sides of the scene together and some of their followers might be opened to other bands that they might not usually see. So that was the whole idea to begin with and it took off from there."In the full interview, Neville talks more about his vision for Brutal Coast, what he looks for when selecting bands, the other bands on the bill and why they were chosen, his view of the current local music scene, new music from Snake Mountain and more.

Friday – April 7, 2023. This was the final day of the 2023 Nevada Desert Experience's Sacred Peace Walk – one mile from the Peace Camp to the White Line – entrance to the Nevada Nuclear Test Site and the most bombed part of planet Earth. In the distance – on land once occupied by the Western Shoshone people – over 100 moon-shaped craters litter the desert landscape. On this Friday – under a hot afternoon sun -- over 30 people presented their grievances at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site's While Line. 12 would cross over and be arrested for trespassing on U.S. Government property. The morning began with breakfast at the Peace Camp and then a trip to Yucca Mountain to learn about plans to store all of this country's nuclear waste below this seismically dangerous area which the Shoshone call Snake Mountain. Then onto the statements and arrests at the White Line. This last program of the Sacred Peace Walk series begins with a conversation I had on Saturday -- after the arrests at Mercury -- with Rich Bishop back at the NDE garden. Rich is a poet and his mind works in wondrous ways – and that Saturday morning he said something that helped me – at least partially – answer the question I had been asking from the start of this voyage: Why do these people expose their intellect, psyche, and bodies for an impossible goal – that is -- to end the threat of nuclear annihilation? Gold Coast based noise merchants Snake Mountain have been a little quiet for the last couple of years.Or to be more precise, since the band's last single The Hunted back in 2019.While there are many (valid) excuses for the time elapsed between releases, all that people need to know is Snake Mountain are back, and, if possible, even more brutal than they were when they left us.Touting a new, heavier direction, Snake Mountain unleash the proof of that claim at 7pm AEST January 25 via HEAVY with their latest offering Veins. True to form, Veins is an absolute beast of a track that channels the darkness inherent in The Black Knight with enough ferocity and venomous intent to ward evil-doers off for good.Vocalist Neville Pearce sat down with HEAVY recently to run us through the new track and other happenings with Snake Mountain."It is definitely heavier," he affirmed. "It's heavier than what we have done before and that's due to the members that joined during the... Apocolypse that happened. We had a bit of a change in lineup where Kristian (Rousell, drums) and Jaymes (Jackson, guitar) joined us, and they just brought a new energy and a new style that I guess we have been chasing for a long time. Jaymes, in particular, is an incredible song writer. He loves his tech-death, as you can probably hear in the song, and he's just really brought some new energy and life to Snake Mountain that we've needed for a while. Jackson Price, as well, who has recently joined us has a tonne of ideas he is bringing to the band as well and it's been amazing working with him and of course Jared (Day, bass) who has been with the band for a long time. I feel like we're a really good unit and friends."The press release calls Veins a demonstration of the new, heavier direction of Snake Mountain, a claim I pose to Pearce as being a little ambitious given their music is already heavier than a blow to the temple with a sledge hammer."The band started off many, many years ago with a totally different vibe," he measured. "When we started it had more of a Mastodon type vibe to it and it just got heavier over time, depending on the guitarists that jumped on board (laughs). But I'm into that sort of heavier tech stuff, so it's kind of more up my alley as well. I don't know. I don't know if there is heavier... I guess we could, and it's a challenge. I saw Werewolves the other night and they melted my face off, so maybe I will have to write a song called We Stole This From Werewolves (laughs)."In the full interview, Neville dives deeper into Veins, the heavier direction, the subject matter and inspiration for the song, tying it in to the Batman franchise, upcoming shows, future new music plans and more.

Any music festival that openly declares its love for the music community as a whole is a winner in the eyes of HEAVY, so when our good friends at Vamped Up decided to host a soiree and call it Our Party we knew this was going to be something pretty special. After initially being slated for the beginning of this year, Pamela and the crew from Vamped Up have had to juggle the dates a few more times to keep the bulk of the line-up intact and the hard work has almost paid off with the inaugural festival set to launch at The Back Room at Brisbane's Chardons Corner Hotel on July 30.Packed with a wealth of local and interstate talent – including Witchgrinder, Our Last Enemy, Snake Mountain, From Crisis To Collapse, Beast Machine, We The Hollow and more, Our Party is more than another music festival, it is a celebration of music itself led by people who are passionate about the future of rock, punk and metal. There's a swag of other goodies to keep you entertained, including jelly wrestling, food trucks, VIP options and plenty more so start planning your day now.HEAVY caught up with the lady behind the festival AND Vamped Up, the alluring Miss Pamela for a chat about… well, everything."Enjoy your life is what I'm trying to say,” she more or less ordered. “I do all of this out of the goodness of my heart. I never ask for any money and this is all for the bands. Every band gets paid but you've gotta buy the tickets! Support the music industry; support the people that do support the industry and come along because we've got a show within a show. I've got a coffin and I will be interviewing from there and there might be some sexy Vampettes as well… We like to do things a bit different, and this is going back from when I started. t's like what I grew up with. I grew up with The Addams Family. I grew up with The Munsters and they were all comedic, right? I'm bringing that back and doing a bit of a routine so we're doing a show within a show!"In the full chat, Pamela talks more about the reasons behind putting the show on, the bands playing and her personal connection with them, special events happening on the day such as jelly wrestling, the VIP area and merch, supporting the local music scene and more.
Adelaide extreme metal outfit Freedom Of Fear have a special affiliation with Brisbane, having spent many a night playing in the Queensland capital in their early years. Now, the band is returning after an enforced absence to perform at the inaugural Metal; Health concert at the Back Room in Annerley on April 30.The event, organized by Scott Moss from local band Minus Life, features hand picked bands from across the nation, all coming together to raise much needed awareness and support for a mental illness that can struck anywhere, any time. What's special about Metal Health – as the name suggests – is that each band is from the heavier spectrum of music, including Snake Mountain, Eye of the Enemy, Minus Life, Lycanthrope, Where The Devil and Tetrament.Guitarist Matt Walters sat down with HEAVY a couple of days out from Metal Health to discuss the event."It's definitely an important cause seeing it affects so many people,” he began, “especially musicians and people in creative fields. I think, as far as I'm aware, musicians suffer proportionally from mental health issues so I think it works out well doing a music event for it. Personally, I think everyone knows some people that suffer so it's something that is close to everybody - some more than others. I'm really happy to be playing for that particular cause."There are many out there who feel heavy metal has much to do with the mental side of listeners health, but Walters argues that heavy metal is more of a cure rather than a symptom."More straight laced people see metal as a dark influence and say it's dark music, therefore its going to put you in a dark mood,” he shook his head, “but I think all of us heavy music fans know it's the opposite. It's not like for me I put on metal when I necessarily feel bad, but it always makes me feel good and that's why I play metal and that's why metal fans go to concerts. Plus, there's also some kind of family aspect to heavy music because it's a little bit more of an outsiders style. I mean, it's fairly popular and a lot of people that go to shows but there's still a community aspect to it."In the full interview, Matt talks about the other bands on the bill, what to expect from Freedom Of Fears show, the importance of speaking out, new music and more.
Mental Health issues are a universal problem. They don't target a specific genre, race or sex, and it is sometimes the people you think are least likely to be afflicted that are actually the most in need.It is something that can always be helped by awareness, and is also something which should never cause shame. Every one of us has had negative thoughts in their life, but, unfortunately, those thoughts manifest into things far worse for others.Recognising this from personal experience and from hearing the stories of those around him, Minus Life front man Scott Moss has decided to put on a charity heavy metal concert to raise much needed funds and awareness for mental health. The event, called Metal Health, will be held at The Back Room, Annerley on April 30, featuring Orpheus Omega, Freedom Of Fear, Eye Of The Enemy, Lycanthrope, Snake Mountain, Where The Devil, Minds End, Upon The Pyre, Tetrament and Minus Life.It is the first of what is hoped will become an annual event, with Moss joining HEAVY to chat about Metal Health in more detail."Over the years we've had many friends in the metal scene suffer - the first person for me that hit home was a good friend of mine Snails. Back in the day many years ago, when the Basement was a hub of metal for Brisbane, Snails was that one guy that was always at every show. He unfortunately committed suicide and other people in the scene over the years have committed suicide or are always talking about their mental health and I started looking into things about mental health and noticed there wasn't many avenues for us to find somebody we could connect with. I looked around for about three months and I found Stride mental health services and out of all of them they deal with kids to older people, whereas most focus on 18 to 25 year olds. The idea was to put on an event that could raise funds and bridge the gap for us. People in the scene can know they (Stride) are going to be there at the show and maybe open up the lines of communication. Also while we are there at the show we are listening to music we love and there could be something there on the night that somebody that hasn't spoken about and thinks this is the perfect opportunity. You're in an environment where everybody is there for a reason and they could open up that night and maybe save a life. That's what it's all about. While it was amazing to talk to my guys, it wasn't without its controversies. I personally loved the adidas Transformers crossovers, but nobody else did. No MOTU news, but about as close as it gets is the Party Wagon from Super7. It even gets compared to Snake Mountain. The only thing Joe this time around was some grab bag comic news, but we could agree on if this was a good thing or not, or if we even cared. The one thing that we all agreed on is the HasLab Rancor is going to fail.

Eins mit dem Namen "Masters of the Universe – Revelations". Doch finden wir wieder zusammen oder haben wir uns doch auseinander gelebt? Eine Frage, die das Geek'sche Terzett zu ergründen versucht. Und sich dabei Expertenhilfe aus einem unsäglichen Ort sucht... Straight outta Snake Mountain! Summer is a great time for hiking, even during the week. There are trails around the region that are short and sweet enough for an after-work stroll, and less likely to be crowded. Snake Mountain in Vermont's Champlain Valley offers the perfect mid-week hike.
Casey Brewster joins us to talk all things back goats and eastern collared lizards! Casey, a research biologist, founded Snake Mountain Pack Goats to give back to veteran and first responders by using Pack Goats to carry gear on hikes and hunting trips in Arkansas. After years of build-up, Kevin Smith and Netflix finally released Part 1 of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, to mixed reviews (to say the least) and a storm of controversy. So we assembled the greatest heroes and villains from across the UNTiverse to rate and review this new show in epic fashion. If you weren't up to speed on the current controversy, then buckle up your Roton, because we went in harder than a Land Shark looking for its next sacrificial Trollan. But beyond all that, we managed to review the show on its merits and boy, if you thought tangents were our thing before, get ready to unleash your inner Sorceress as we found ourselves discussing the possibility of Tri-Klops going on tour with Black Flag, a world where Jason Mewes or even Don Knotts could have been He-Man, Macho Mer-Man Randy Savage, why you should never touch Cringer's stapler and yes, the secret origins of Wun-Dar. Oh yeah, and THAT Sailor Moon mash-up. So break into Snake Mountain, avoid the Stinkors and get ready to embrace the “power” that is UNT 124: Masters of the Universe – Revelation. At the center of the universe, at the border between the light and the dark stand 4 brave warriors. For countless ages, they have kept the world of 80's movie podcasts in harmony. But the armies of darkness do not rest and the capture of streaming services is ever most in their minds. For those who control the streams, will come the power. The power to be supreme... the power to be almighty... the power to be...THE LAST ACTION HEROES! This episode, join He-DAN, Master Of The JESPERverse, SkeLEONtor and GwilBJORN as we take up the fight against the evil Lord Skeletor to win back Eternia in the 1987 disaster-piece MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE! Inspired by the worldwide toy phenomena and smash hit 80's cartoon series, we follow Dolph Lundgren (for better or worse) as he takes on the lofty mantle of He-Man! The forces of Snake Mountain have won. Using a device known as The Cosmic Key (the cawsmic key!!) Skeletor has overthrown Castle Grayskull and won the war that had every 80's kid on the edge of their seats every day after school. Out manoeuvred and out gunned, He-Man and his friends flee to earth where they lose The Cosmic Key (the cawsmic key!!), their only way home, and seem very confused about the whole situation. Pursued by relentless mercenaries He-Man must trust in his newfound earthling friends if he is to get back to Eternia, save Grayskull and confront Skeletor in the ultimate 80's showdown between good and evil. With some incredible production talent, questionable adaptation choices, rad synthesisers and a wonderfully Shakespearean performance from Frank Langella as Skeletor, we delve into this problematic but charming film to dissect what made it such a divisive and critical failure for everyone involved. So, fire up your Cosmic Keys (the cawsmic key), punch in those coordinates and get your ass ready for battle. We will win back Grayskull! Take up your sword and let us hear you shout: I HAVE THE POOOWWEERR!! ---------- Find us on Twitter: @TL_ActionHeroes Or find us on Instagram: @thelastactionheroespodcast

The cosy confines of Christmas armchairs by the fire are abandoned for the cold, far reaches of the galaxy today, as Velvet and Blackout harness the Power of Grayskull and romp among birthday celebrations on the planet of Eternia with Prince Adam and Princess Adora in The He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special from 1985. Just like the Earth-bound Orko, they discover much, including the true meaning of utilising the established, creative content of other franchises. Is there something romantic forming betwixt two un-earthly antagonists in the shadows of Snake Mountain? Just how blasé can the animated youth possibly be when in the presence of talking, floating garments? Who IS the person with the trunk standing by the tree? All this and more inside… The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour is a free podcast from iPorle Media, which holds production copyright. Opinions and recollections expressed are not to be taken as fact.
