As traditional investment avenues become saturated, Africa begins to shine as a viable option for investors looking for growth and opportunities. This month's Financial Perspectives episode reveals how demographic shifts, economic growth, and political reforms create an environment ripe for investment in various sectors. Hear from Rick Rikoski, Chief Economist at Democracy Investments and CEO and Chief Scientist of Hadal, as he highlights the significant demographic shifts occurring across the continent, notably the soaring population of Nigeria, which has nearly tripled within the last few decades. As we look to the future, Africa is projected to grow by an astounding 2.4 billion people by 2100, making it a focal point for investors aiming to tap into a burgeoning consumer base. This demographic change is essential as it indicates a rising demand for goods, services, and investment in infrastructure. The podcast also emphasizes the expansion of financial markets and highlights how nations like China are playing an influential role through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative. By investing in African infrastructure and financial systems, they're shaping the business landscape and creating pathways for international trade. The conversation navigates through the fabric of African economies, touching on the historical context of economic activity, often driven by resource extraction, and the evolving landscape that is shifting toward a diverse array of industries. Listeners will gain valuable insights into how global dynamics are shifting towards Africa, emphasizing the necessity for market reforms and infrastructure improvements to facilitate a more favorable investment climate. Join us during this episode, as we explore whether the future of global investment lies in the frontier markets of Africa. If you'd like to learn more about the show, have a topic or speaker to suggest, or would like to leave us a comment, email podcast@cfa-sf.org. Dr. Alan Jamieson is a Scottish marine biologist, engineer, author, and explorer known for studying life in the furthest depths of the oceans. Through the extensive use of landers—a combination of ship-mounted echo sounders and unmanned camera systems—Alan's research focuses on discovering new species, establishing the true depth ranges of marine animals, and highlighting anthropogenic impacts at full ocean depths. He was the Chief Scientist at Victor Vescovo's Five Deeps Expedition, a project aimed at mapping and exploring the deepest points of the world's five oceans. Today, Alan serves as CEO of Armatus Oceanic, an organization he co-founded in 2019 for R&D in marine tech, expeditions, and science dissemination. Through Armatus, Alan co-hosts the Deep-Sea Podcast with Dr. Thomas Linley. In addition to his work as CEO at Armatus, Alan currently serves as a professor at the University of Australia and is the Founding Director of the Deep-Sea Research Centre. Alan joins me today to discuss how serendipity shaped his life's path toward marine biology and ocean exploration. He explains how he pioneered the design and construction of deep-sea robots and shares his discoveries along the way. He highlights the difference between adventurism, exploration, and science. He also discusses why society needs to democratize access to scientific experience and underscores what it will take to create a meaningful relationship between the general public and the deep sea. “Everything in the deep sea—and most of the planet is deep sea—is driven by what's happening on the surface: photosynthesis, warming, CO2 absorption. Everything has  control on what happens below it.” - Alan Jamieson This week on Kathy Sullivan Explores: The young Alan Jamieson: his interests and life as a student What made him study industrial design at university and how it continues to serve him in his career as a marine biologist Alan's work experience after college and his journey to becoming a mechanical technician for the Oceanlab at the University of Aberdeen Working on his thesis, Autonomous lander technology for biological research at mid-water, abyssal, and hadal depths What encouraged Alan to go deep into marine science and what persuaded him to pursue a Ph.D. in Zoology The hadal zone, where it is, and how deep its depths are Why it's essential to understand and study the hadal zone How the ocean's trenches are formed The psychological problem of getting people engaged with the deep-sea How culture and metaphors perpetuate biases about deep-sea exploration Alan's role in Victor Vescovo's Five Deeps Expedition Seeing anthropogenic litter at the bottom of the ocean The strangest and most amazing things Alan has seen in the deepest depths of the ocean The difference between adventurism, exploration, and science Why experiencing the deep sea in person matters Science tourism and the value of democratizing science exploration Our Favorite Quotes: “You say you love the top 50 meters of the ocean because that's where you scuba dive and fish, but think the deep sea is none of your concern. It actually should be—most of your planet is deep sea.” - Alan Jamieson “If society's going to develop a relationship with the deep sea on an almost unimaginable scale, it shouldn't be an elitist endeavor where you can only experience it as a scientist.” - Alan Jamieson Related Content: Mountain Climbing, Deep Ocean Diving & The Purpose of Life with Victor Vescovo The Ocean's Deep Regions with Tim MacDonald Connect with Alan Jamieson: Armatus Oceanic Book: The Hadal Zone: Life in the Deepest Oceans The Deep-Sea Podcast Armatus Oceanic on LinkedIn The Deep-Sea Podcast on Twitter Alan Jamieson on Twitter Email: alan.j.jamieson@uwa.edu.au Spaceship Not Required I'm Kathy Sullivan, the only person to have walked in space and gone to the deepest point in the ocean.

Liam Weedall has been playing live and recording with bands since the age of 14 after picking up the sticks at age 11. He has played many different genres such as pop, rock, jazz, funk, punk, Latin, and big band, which have all had a profound influence on the way that he plays his main genre of choice: progressive metal/fusion. Liam's first band was 'The Peaves' (girl band), with his sister Gemma (on vocals) in 2005. During his mid-late teens, the most notable bands he was involved with were Sonic Euphoria and Asphyxia, the latter of which supported Whitechapel and Psycroptic as well as winning the award for “Best Youth Band” in the Australian Metal Awards in 2009. Liam was part of the Rostrevor College Big Band that took out 2nd place in the National School Band Competition ‘Generations in Jazz' in 2008. He was also selected by acclaimed brass player James Morrison as a Future Finalist for the James Morrison Scholarship in the same year. The following year he completed a Diploma in Jazz from the University of Adelaide. Liam joined Adelaide metal heavyweights ‘Double Dragon' in mid-late 2010 at the age of 19. Seeing as the band had played national tours with the likes of Slayer, Megadeth, Chimaira, and The Haunted, it was an easy decision to make. While with Double Dragon he played shows all around Australia including shows with Soilwork, Darkest Hour, Carnifex, and Tim Ripper Owens. The band released their sophomore album ‘Sons of Asena' on the 4th of December 2011 which received airplay on Triple J and was followed by extensive touring around Australia. Following the dissolution of Double Dragon in May 2012, Liam formed the band ‘Voros' with two of his band mates from Double Dragon. Since then, Voros has released 2 Eps and a full-length album. The band has toured around Australia several times and played with such notable bands as At the Gates, Napalm Death, Arcturus, Kataklysm, Entombed AD, Psycroptic, Be'lakor and King Parrot. 2016 saw the band tour Taiwan and China including Wake Up Festival in Taipei. In January 2015 Liam joined Adelaide progressive metal band Dyssidia, who have since played shows with international heavyweights Opeth, Trivium, Tesseract, Between the Buried and Me, Katatonia, Fallujah, The Ocean, as well as regular shows with Aussie veterans such as Caligula's Horse & Voyager. Dyssidia have now released 3 EPs and a full-length album "Costly Signals" and have toured Australia several times. Liam is currently playing live with Dyssidia, Voros, Alarum, Hadal Maw, James Norbert Ivanyi, and new funk rock trio Cliff Racer, as well as occasional gigs with various bands spanning multiple genres. Past jazz/cover band work has included playing with the Baker Boys Band, Party Club Band, Triplescore, Mr Goodnight, Bill Parton Trio, Chesterfield Brass, and Twisted J. He has been teaching drum lessons in Adelaide since 2008. Liam is proudly endorsing Gretsch Drums, EVANS drumheads, PROMARK by D'ADDARIO, Czarcie Kopyto Custom Drum Pedals from Poland, and Precision Kicks triggers from Melbourne. Julie Cane & Rick Rikoski -  Promoting Democracy Through Impact Investing Rick Rikoski and Julie Cane are partners of Democracy Investments. Julie began her career as a U.S. Naval Aviator flying the SH-3 Sea King helicopter. She has over 20 years of experience in financial services. As a Captain in the California State Guard, Julie continues to serve. She does this in addition to being the CEO of Democracy Investments. Rick is the chief economist at Democracy Investments and also the chief scientist at Hadal. Hadal is a marine robotics company, which he co-founded in 2009. Having spent over 20 years developing probabilistic algorithms, Rick was well prepared to implement the Economist's Democracy Index for financial products. Democracy Investments Democracy Investments is a “mission-driven asset manager”. It was formed because of the "frustration with the global rise of authoritarianism and the financial vehicles that passively invest in authoritarian countries”.  A discussion between Rick and Julie about ways to help shift capital away from authoritarians sparked the idea for founding Democracy Investments. During the pandemic, Rick was already using the Economist's Democracy Index for modeling coronavirus and thought why don't they use that as an overlay for weighting democracy in the investment world. They launched Democracy Investments in 2020. Nuclear weapons have obviously had a big impact on the world since their development more than 70 years ago. But new research on the diets of small crustaceans in the Mariana Trench--the deepest known point in the world at more than 36,000 feet below sea level--indicates that elevated levels of the radioactive isotope Carbon-14 created by nuclear weapons testing can still be found in these remote, isolated creatures. This week Charlie dives into this interesting research that reveals new insights about the carbon cycles of our oceans as well as the measurable impact of human activities on the environment.Check out the paper, news articles, and disgusting picture of a Hadal amphipod at www.paperboyspodcast.com.

The South Sandwich Trench has not been thoroughly explored and is the only subzero Hadal zone (deeper than 6,000 meters) in the world. No human has ever dived in the trench, and due to its remote location, this dive posed many logistical and weather-related challenges, however the scientific findings could prove to be groundbreaking.

Rob Brens is what I would like to call a real hot commodity. Like many of us musicians trying to find and hold onto a drummer is freaking hard, so when we discover world class drummers like Rob, many of us are fighting for a piece of the action. Rob has taken full advantage of the demand by working with a wide range of artists from different genres, crafting his skills and expertise. He is continuously building his profile in Australia and now beyond as a versatile, highly experienced weapon on the skins. Most people will know Rob as the drummer in Hadal Maw and I Built the Sky, however also has a long history with bands such as Alarum, Teramaze, King Parrot, Dreadnaught, Descrator and many more. One of the coolest things about this podcast is the opportunity that I get to spend time and surround myself with positively driven, highly motivated people. Many of those who have been on Andy Social to date are consistently challenging themselves and always wanting to improve. As you will hear in this episode, Rob's focus is not only to be a world class musician, but a world class human. In our chat we cover a wide range of topics from his career to date as a drummer, approaching session work and being able to work effectively on the hundreds of different songs (often quite complex) that he would now have under his belt. We also talk about physical and mental health, productivity, experiencing growth through adversity with his Jiu Jitsu and heaps more. Looking to get pumped up and inspired? Look no further. I think we all need a Rob Brens in our life who sets the standard that we can all strive toward. I hope you get as much from this as I did. Rebecca Morelle talks to explorers of deep ocean trenches, from film-maker James Cameron to biologists discovering dark realms of weird pink gelatinous fish and gigantic crustaceans. The deepest regions of the ocean lie between 6,000 and 11,000 metres. Oceanographers term this the Hadal Zone. It exists where the floor of abyss plunges into long trough-like features, known as ocean trenches. The Hadal zone is the final frontier of exploration and ecological science on the planet. At its most extreme, the water pressure rises to 1 tonne per square centimetre and the temperature drops to 1 degree C. Despite the challenging conditions, some animals survive and thrive in the trenches. Because the technical challenges to operating there are so high, we are only now just learning what is down there and how creatures adapt to life in the extremes. Based at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, deep sea ecologist Alan Jamieson is one of the premier explorers of life in the Hadal zone. In the programme, he talks through some of the latest video footage he has from the depths of the Kermadec Trench in New Zealand - not by visiting in person but by dropping cameras on a deep sea probe called a hadal lander to the distant sea floor. The images were gathered on an expedition in April and May. They revealed new habits of hadal creatures. Rebecca does talk to two people who have ventured in person to the far limit of the Hadal zone: US Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh who went down to the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench in 1960, and Hollywood director James Cameron who, 52 years later, repeated Walsh's voyage to 11,000 metres.(Photo: Supergiant amphipod at 6200 metres. Hello & Welcome dear subscribers . Here is the brand Deep House episode named Abyssal Depth . Enjoy, Mr. Retalin The abyssal zone is the abyssopelagic layer or pelagic zone that contains the very deep benthic communities near the bottom of oceans. "Abyss" derives from the Greek word ἄ, meaning bottomless. At depths of 4,000 to 6,000 meters (13,123 to 19,685 feet), this zone remains in perpetual darkness and never receives daylight. It is the deeper part of the midnight zone which starts in the bathypelagic waters above. Its permanent inhabitants (for example, the black swallower, tripod fish, deep-sea anglerfish and the giant squid) are able to withstand the immense pressures of the ocean depths, up to 76 megapascals (11,000 psi). Many abyssal creatures have underslung jaws to sift through the sand to catch food. These regions are also characterized by continuous cold and lack of nutrients. The abyssal zone has temperatures around 2 C to 3 C (35 F to 37 F) through the large majority of its mass. The area below the abyssal zone is the sparsely inhabited Hadal zone. The zone above is the bathyal zone. These three zones belong to the deep-sea realm. Above on the continental platform there are respectively the euphotic and dysphotic zones. The abyssal zone lies partially in the dysphotic and partially in the aphotic zones.
