Interview by Ali WilliamsSpanish melodic death metal force BLOODHUNTER returns on June 12 with their new album, Sons Of The Abandoned. It has been both a long wait and a very deliberate one for the band. Four years have passed since the band's previous album, and while fans have been understandably circling the release date like metalheads around a merch table with limited sizes, BLOODHUNTER have not spent that time idling around waiting for inspiration to knock. “It's been a long wait until we finally release the album,” vocalist Diva Satanica explained to HEAVY's Ali Williams, adding that the response from fans has already been overwhelming. “We are very thankful for that.”For Diva, Sons Of The Abandoned is not simply another BLOODHUNTER record with the distortion turned up and the emotional damage left to fend for itself. This time, something shifted. The music still carries that death metal edge, but the album and its inspiration step into more exposed territory lyrically. Diva admits that previously she had hidden behind the metaphors in their lyrics, but this time the writing became more direct. “It has been different this time,” she explains. “Usually, I feel like I hide myself behind the metaphors. It's difficult when you play death metal to find this balance between speaking about things that everybody has in common, but without sounding too cheesy.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Pipeman interviews Southern California's newest force in melodic death metal, Ravenmocker, and their second single / music video “Where The Raven Flies” to follow their debut track "Infallible."The new single continues building the band's identity: soaring melody, cultural storytelling, and a modern take on the melodic death metal spirit once championed by acts like Children of Bodom, Insomnium, and Kalmah."Where The Raven Flies" is an anthemic, cinematic track that tells the origin story of the Raven Mocker, a cryptid from Adirondack and Cherokee lore. Known as a harbinger of death, the Raven Mocker feeds on the sick and dying, stealing the remaining years of its victims' lives. The single paints vivid imagery of the creature soaring over forests and villages, acting as both reaper and omen.Click Here to Subscribe to The Adventures of Pipeman for PERKS, BONUS Content & FREE GIVEWAYS! Interview by Kris PetersPerth based melodic death metal outfit VANTA returned with their debut full length album Perpetual Selection on March 13, a cinematic andconcept driven record that explores humanity's darker instincts through the lens of cosmic horror, mythology and dystopian sci-fi.Perpetual Selection is a sonic and visual journey inspired by Indonesian dark folklore and survival horror games to the brutal sci-fi landscapes of Dune and Warhammer 40K, transforming real world anxieties into symbolic narratives of monsters, collapse and rebirth. At its core, the album honours melodeath roots by fusing the aggression and heaviness of modern american death metal with the folkiness and melodic sway of early euro death metal. The band literally ‘breaks down' trauma, inner collapse and humanity's obsession with forces it barely understands in songs like Stillwater and Sacred Light. VANTA's creativity and experimentation in different extreme sub-genres can be heard throughout this album and is a bold statement that the pack are not afraid to push the boundaries and even make some of you...uncomfortable. As well as their sound, their art, lyrics and their symbolic music videos such as Kuyang, Empty Shells and Alchemy mirror the reality that is currently unfolding before us.HEAVY spoke with drummer Ferdi to find out more, asking him to dive deeper into the musical side of the album."We want to explore the darker side of humanity and just where we're heading in general," he began. "Like you see all the things unfolding before our eyes and just around us. Compared to our Gravemind era, we sort of like touched on that more traditional Euro mellodeath sound. Like the Gothenburg riffs, the kind of early Children Of Bodum sound, and a mix with Dahlia nuance. But with this album - because we wanted to explore more into the whole narrative about collapse and rebirth and just where the society is heading in general, we wanted something more extreme, more aggressive. And the three of us all love black metal very much. We love the early Dimmu Borgir gear, the Belphegor sort of sound, and the early Behemoth riffs. But all in all, the core sound is still MelloDeath and just blending it in more with modern influences, I would say."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

While the idea of conceptual records and music is nothing new, more often than not, these concepts are drawn from ideas, visions, or the minds of people who are passionate about the very thing they are writing about. While these musical storylines are more often than not an entertaining escape from the mundane existence of everyday life, they are merely a figment of another person's imagination and can be construed as such. But when it comes to conceptual stories surrounding war and the atrocities associated with it, there are few bands who manage the task well. Subjects that have basis in reality and the suffering of others must have an authentic flavour to them in order to be respectful to those who have lived it and their families, with bands like Sabaton standing out for their continued excellence in this field. But there is also another band who delves into the horrors of war with unnerving detail, except this time the band in question themselves live and/or were raised in a war zone. A real-life battle zone where life and death are a daily balancing act. As such, their music is not only based on fact, it is written in conflict. That band is 1914, formed in Lviv, Ukraine, in 2014. From the outset, 1914 have written and sung about war - primarily WW1 - but the daily threat of war that lives on their doorstep enables the band to write with an eerie authenticity unlike most others. 1914's upcoming fourth album, Viribus Unitis, adheres to the same conceptual storyline as each of the other albums, except this time the story arc follows the personal accounts of a Ukrainian soldier in the K.u.K. army, following real events and tracing a timeline from 1914 to 1919. The album paints a grim journey through the war's rise, climax, and hollow aftermath, combining a brutal mixture of blackened death metal, slow-burning doom, and ambient war soundscapes.HEAVY spoke with vocalist 2nd Division, 147th Infantry Regiment, Senior Lieutenant Dietmar Kumarberg (Dmytro Ternushchak) to find out more."I don't know how I must feel about it," he laughed, speaking with a thick Ukrainian accent. "At least I'm still alive - because I'm from Ukraine - so it's not bad at all in our circumstances. At least we did this, and we finished this album, and we will release it on Napalm Records. I feel some… let's call it happiness (laughs), because I'm allowed to do this, and it's not bad at all."We ask him to dive into the album deeper musically."With this album - like all of ours - we started based on real historical events, with a lot of research," he replied. "It's a big concept. But with this album, we started in a completely different way. We based the whole album on the life of one soldier. This is a soldier from the Western part of Ukraine - my home town. This is the view from one soldier when he faced war at the very beginning of the First World War, and the Russians invaded my hometown, and his regiment must retreat, and he faces the huge battles."In the full interview, Dietmar tells us more about the conceptual journey of the soldier, including his lonely end. He tells us the story behind the title - which is Latin for With United Forces and how it ties in with Viribus Unitus, including personal tales of battle he has endured living in Ukraine.Dietmar goes further into the concept and explains how 1914 manage to create a sonic landscape and atmospherics that take the listener inside the war zone and the importance of research and factual information in their music. He talks of the personal toll writing about such horrific encounters leaves on him after an album cycle and runs us through what it is like living as a musician in Ukraine throughout the war and devastation, plus much more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

What happens when a teenage metalhead from a quiet Swedish suburb grabs a guitar, jumps on a local bus with his friends—and some of the biggest names in Scandinavian metal—and decides to rewrite the soundtrack of modern metal? On today's episode of Bringin' it Backwards, Adam and Tera Lisicky sit down with Mikael Stanne of legendary band Dark Tranquility for a candid, unfiltered look at three-plus decades in the scene, from cassette tape trading and fighting over synth vs. metal in the schoolyard, to accidentally inventing the “Gothenburg Sound” alongside fellow icons At the Gates and In Flames. Mikael shares why forming Dark Tranquility with neighborhood friends was more about escaping the ordinary than chasing fame, how those infamous bus rides into Gothenburg were basically a rolling summit of musical minds, and what it was really like to win a Swedish Grammy during the chaos of 2020 (spoiler: he had to text the band to tell them they'd won). Plus, hear how the band's 13th album, “End Time Signal,” came out of major lineup changes and a band-wide leap into the unknown. Whether you're a die-hard metal fan or just fascinated by artists who never stopped pushing forward, you'll want to catch every minute of this episode. Joining together the righteous forces of Obsequiae and Inexorum for some Gothenburg-style melodeath throwback, it's been nearly two and a half years since the release of Majesties' debut album Vast Reaches Unclaimed (20 Buck Spin) and it's still a favorite amongst some of us here at Nine Circles. A follow-up may not (yet) be upon us, but myself and a couple others had the utmost privilege of catching their incredible live debut at this year's Fire in the Mountains festival on the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. I had asked the core trio of Tanner, Carl Skildum, and Matt Kirkwold if they were down for an interview at some point during the festival; naturally it's hard to arrange such a meeting with no cell service and schedules all over the place (not to mention not wanting to miss a ton of killer bands), but Tanner and I were able to set aside some time to record on the shore of Two Medicine Lake right near the festival grounds. We discussed how the show went, nerded out about classic melodic extreme metal (a lot), and more. Check back in the not-too-distant future as more from Majesties is on the horizon!HUGE thanks to Tanner for the time and audio assist! 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter (X) | Instagram | Bluesky

Sailor Hunter is a melodic death metal with groove, grit, and a splash of Mediterranean blood. Established in the Swedish countryside Borås back in 2018, Sailor Hunter has spent years carving out a sound that blends heavy hooks, dark atmospheres, and raw energy. Call it melodeath with a twist. We're not here to rehash the past, we're here to sink ships. This year marks a new chapter of the band. We've just introduced our new frontman Liam McDonald, and the first single from this new lineup is out now: “Echoes of Hate” available on Spotify. The official video is up on YouTube too.
