Interview by Kris PetersWith a cross pollination of varying metal genres including sludge, death, gloom, black metal and hardcore, UK heavy outfit Conjurer are one of the few modern metal bands to walk that balancing tightrope of styles without imposing too much in any direction.Their willingness to experiment and push themselves outside of their usual comfort zones has seen the band traverse new sonic landscapes with each album, the most recent of which, 2022's Pathos, seeing the band expose their music to a wider global audience and open the musical minds of a whole new legion of fans. After visiting Tasmania as part of Dark Mofo that same year - and absolutely slaying it from all reports - Conjurer return to this side of the world for their debut tour of mainland Australia when they start a run of shows with Lo! and Botch in Brisbane from May 15.HEAVY sat down recently with singer/guitarist Brady Deeprose to find out more."We are coming on tour in Australia - which sounds insane to say out loud - (and) we're playing three headline shows and a couple of shows supporting Botch," Deeprose enthused. We ask if he is already packed and ready to go, still one month out from the tour."I moved house three days ago, so I'm not even unpacked at this point," he laughed. "Last time we were in Australia we were down for Dark Mofo in Tasmania and I spent four out of the five days sick as a dog in bed, so I'm ready to get back out and actually experience some of the country. It's one of those bucket list tours that you see bands go to Australia, and it never feels like it's going to be you. We're just so thankful to have the opportunity and to be getting back out there."We point out that it is a brutal run of five shows in five days and ask if he ever gets the feeling someone in their booking team doesn't like them."It's all of them, for sure," he laughed. "We're playing nine shows in ten days and then flying directly to Australia off the back of that, so we're like… I was saying to the guys I'm obviously really excited about this, but it's going to the most brutal month of touring we've ever done. We're gonna be absolutely shagged by the time we get there (laughs). We're so lucky to be able to do this. You get up, drink a couple of Red Bulls, and you make it happen. The shows are gonna be amazing."In the full interview, Brady talks more about the tour and what to expect, visiting a country on tour for the first time and how he prepares, Conjurer's influences and where they come from, knowing how much of each genre to mix through new music and how to tell if they go too far, their status as a 'non-specific' metal band in terms of genre, new music and more.

This week's episode is all about the musical magic of the ‘No Chord Fingerstyle' method and Christmas songs. Today, we are looking at the main reasons why you should learn a couple of Christmas songs and how you can do this.   Apart from the wonderful joy and cheer of being able to play a Christmas carol, it's also a great way of measuring your progress each year when Christmas rolls around. It can be hard sometimes to see your progress day-to-day, but dusting off the old Christmas songs is a great way of seeing how far you've come.   In today's episode, I talk about what Christmas songs to learn and how to learn them, the benefits of measuring your progress, where to start if you're a beginner, and how to “embellish” your Christmas tunes if you can already play them. I also talk about the histories of some famous Christmas songs, the new course I'm releasing called Christmas Crackers, and I'll play a little medley of the songs in the course for you. To round off the episode, I reveal “The Gatekeeper's” favourite Christmas song, so take a listen to find out which one it is.   This episode will help you realise the benefits of tracking your progress, how Christmas carols can help you do this, and where to start if you want to learn some holiday tunes.   You can get more tips, advice, and a powerful new free eBook on the 13 Ways to Escape the Acoustic Asylum from me, Dan Thorpe, by joining the email list here – https://acousticasylum.com/   Like this episode? Phil Lesh now sings "All I know is something like a bird within him sang", transfering it Jerry Garcia instead.            First played Feb. 19, 1971 Capitol Theater Port Chester           Last played June 30, 1995 Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh           Played by the Dead 300 times in concert This was the first time played since 9.15.73 (382 shows) This version is amazing both because it is acoustic and Jerry's voice is so strong.  Makes you fall in love with the song all over again, or, as One Armed Lary would say, “taste it again for the first time” although I don't think he was talking about this song, or any song, when he said it (Deer Creek 1989). SHOW  #1:         I've Been All Around This World                           Track No. 2                           1:23 – 2:16               The origins of I've Been All Around This World are not easy to trace. It possibly derives from a number of different songs. The 'Hang Me, Oh Hang Me' verse is thought to derive from the traditional song My Father Was A Gambler, a US ballad, which is thought to be about a murderer who was hanged in 1870. The song has also been collected under such titles as "Diggin' on the New Railroad", “The Gambler, ” “My Father Was a Gambler,” “The New Railroad,” “The Hobo's Lament,” “The Hobo's Blues” and "Hang Me, Oh Hang Me". In 1930, George Milburn published a book entitled the Hobo's Hornbook that included a version of “I've Been All Round this World”. It was also found in Henry Marvin Belden's "Ballads and Songs Collected by the Missouri Folk-Lore Society". The book was printed in 1940 but the song was "secured by Miss Frances Barbour in 1917 from the singing of Minnie Doyle of Arlington, Phelps County [MO]". Dead's version is “Traditional, arranged by the Grateful Dead and they all get credit (Pig Pen days)Released on History of the Grateful Dead, Vol. ! She was a self-taught left-handed guitarist who played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down.[4] This position meant that she would play the bass lines with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. Her signature alternating bass style has become known as "Cotten picking".[5]NPR stated "her influence has reverberated through the generations, permeating every genre of music."[6]Her album Folksongs and Instrumentals with Guitar (1958), was placed into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, and was deemed as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The album included her signature recording "Freight Train", a song she wrote in her early teens.[7] In 1984, her live album Elizabeth Cotten Live!, won her a Grammy Award for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording, at the age of 90.[8] That same year, Cotten was recognized as a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts.[9] In 2022, she was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as an early influence.[10]               David Dodd:  The song debuted in the Dead's repertoire during their Warfield run on September 25, 1980, and was then played ten times over the course of the acoustic shows at the Warfield and Radio City Music Hall runs. After that, it made three more appearances, in one-off situations such as an acoustic set at the Mill Valley Recreation Center, or in the Netherlands for an acoustic set, and finally at Marin Vets, on March 28, 1984, in a performance that kicked off the second set, without Weir and Mydland onstage. However, I know the song had been “around” for much longer than that. It appears on the studio outtakes from Garcia's Reflections album, as released in the All Good Things box set. And personal interviews with Garcia's circle of acquaintances in Palo Alto in the early 1960s make it explicitly clear that he was familiar with the work of Libba Cotten. So I expect Garcia had performed the song many times during his folkie period, and it may have been in the Jug Band repertoire. Dodd:  An avid Grateful Dead concertgoer for more than two decades, David Dodd is a librarian who brings to the work a detective's love of following a clue as far as it will take him. Author of:The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics OUTRO:            Ripple                           Track No. 9                           3:04 – 4:30               From American Beauty  (Released Nov. 1970)               Robert Hunter wrote this song in 1970 in London on the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly drinking half a bottle of retsina in the process [3]). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Jerry Garcia wrote the music to this song.[3]                       Between 1970 and 1971 the Grateful Dead played the gorgeous Garcia/Hunter tune “Ripple” a number of times both electric and acoustic before putting the song in mothballs until 1980. Though the Dead performed “Ripple” a whopping 27 times acoustically in 1980 and then once again unplugged in 1981, it disappeared from the repertoire for the final 14 years of the band's career with one exception. On September 3, 1988 the Grateful Dead busted out an electric “Ripple” for the first time in 17 years for what would be the final performance of the tune.As the story goes, which is unconfirmed, the band was approached by the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a request from a young fan dying of cancer. The Grateful Dead were asked to perform “Ripple” at their September 3, 1988 show in Landover, Maryland. Jerry Garcia & Co. honored the request by ending the evening with the tender ballad. “Ripple” hadn't been played in any form in 459 shows and it had been 1,113 performances since the last electric version of the American Beauty stunner which took place at New York City's Fillmore East. As you can imagine, the crowd went absolutely ape shit the moment the “Ripple” bust out begins. That was also the night of the rehearsal dinner for my wedding weekend in Chicago.  A number of my good Deadhead friends were in town celebrating with my wife and me and much later that night (remember, no cell phones or internet or on-line set lists.  Had to wait for the 800 RUN DEAD line to be updated and then be able to get through.  Somehow even by those standares word got around very fast and my buddies were not at all pleased since many of them would have undoubtedly been at that show (although, since it was a second encore a number of fans had already walked out of the Cap Center and then desperately tried to get back in.No better way to end any show, including this one. Music Stories:Neil Young & Crazy Horse Deliver ‘Tonight's The Night' and ‘Everybody Knows This is Nowhere' in Full Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros Announces Three-Night New Year's Eve Stand in Fort Lauderdale Phish to Bring Four-Night New Year's Run Back to Madison Square Garden

Recently, I got to speak with composer and Grammy-Award-winning songwriter Alex Geringas, who has had the distinct pleasure of creating many songs and musical numbers for the Disney Universe. Alex is the co-writer of the song “My Kind of Monster” for the Disney Channel Original movie "Under Wraps 2", alongside the film's directors Alex Zamm and Michael Goode. The song is full of energy and celebrates letting your freak flag fly. It was performed by cast members Malachi Barton, Christian J Simon and Sophia Hammons. The movie centers around three friends Amy, Gilbert, and Marshal who band together once again to keep their beloved mummy friend Harold and his love, Rose, safe from the wrath of an evil mummy. Alex's song My Kind of Monster captures the festive feel of Halloween, and is a great companion for this family-friendly feature.   Alex's music can also be heard at Disneyland. Along with Duddy Brown, he created the theme song for Disneyland's firework show, “Wondrous Journeys,” entitled “It's Wondrous.” The lyrics are enchanting, and the music is uplifting as it crescendos to a magical climax. The song explores “the magic that we call life,” which encapsulates the Disney vibe perfectly.  Continuing his work in the Disney realm, Alex also co-wrote the theme song for "The Chicken Squad" on Disney Junior.  Additionally, he wrote the lyrics and produced the Camp Minnie theme song for "Minnie's Bow-Toons".

Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne stoner/sludge/groove/doom band Goat Sharman are making the trip to the nations capital this weekend for the Canberra Metal Festival featuring Misery, Psycroptic, Abramalin, Werewolves, Alarum, Black Rheno and more. The band have steadily gone about building a loyal, solid fan base since their inception in 2018 and released their debut self titled EP early in 2021. They are currently working on the follow up album, but drummer Max still found time to sit down with HEAVY for a chat about their upcoming shows and more."You can expect some heavy riffage," he replied when quizzed on what punters can expect from their live show. "A bit of shennanigans, some loud noises and we'll just be having a good time grooving."The style of music played by Goat Sharman is dominated by a handful of major bands, and as such the scope for drawing influence from the genre pool may not be as great as bands from, say, the thrash side of things. We ask Max how difficult it is for a band to take those influences and put their own spin on proceedings."There's elements of things that they do that we really enjoy," he measured. "We love playing around with polyrhythms and metric modulations and lots of crazy time signatures and such that we like to incorporate into our music and keep it interesting."In the full interview, Max talks more about this weekends show, which bands he is looking forward to sharing a stage with, the early days of the band, how they came up with their sound, new music, future shows and more.

Musical Magic with Elfy Jo Radio Show Als klassieke muzikant vond ik improvisatie altijd een beetje eng. ~ More about Musical Magic with Elfy Jo ~  Do you enjoy music? Is music something you enjoy rocking to in your car or in the shower? Musical Magic with Elfy Jo Radio Show As a trained classical musician improvisation was always a bit of a "dangerous" area for me. At the time that I was studying music classical and jazz were strictly separated. Improvisation belonged to the domain of the jazz musicians. Historically speaking, improvising was also a part of the "classical" performance practice. As you know I've been improvising on this show quite a bit. Today I'm taking you on an artistic journey that will hopefully open up new creative regions for you as well! ~ More about Musical Magic with Elfy Jo ~  Do you enjoy music? Is music something you enjoy rocking to in your car or in the shower?
