And The Award Goes To... With MARCUS BRIDGE From NORTHLANE

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersIt's that time of the year again where Australia's finest musical talents assemble to reward their achievements over the last 12 months and beyond. The APRA Music Awards celebrate excellence in contemporary music, honouring songwriters and publishers who have achieved artistic excellence and outstanding success in their fields. To be held in Melbourne on April 30 this year, the APRA Music Awards have, for the second year in a row, acknowledged the growing presence of harder edged and heavy music by presenting the Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal category - won in its inaugural year by Parkway Drive.More than just a token nod in the direction of change, APRA has fully embraced music of these genres, recognizing and paying due respect to a style of music that has grown to such levels it is now impossible to ignore. The nominees for Most Performed Hard Rock/Heavy Metal in 2025 are Make Them Suffer, Polaris, Windwaker, Speed and Northlane, with HEAVY jumping at the chance to speak with Northlane frontman Marcus Bridge to find out how confident the band is going into the awards."It's exciting stuff, and it's with a bunch of other great bands," he smiled. "It's cool to be with so many bands that we've all grown up with and built our careers with at the same time and see the new generation taking that spot."We ask Marcus how important recognition such as this is for the future of Australian hard rock/heavy music."I think it just shows over the last five to ten years how heavy music has grown worldwide," he mused, "and especially the Australian bands. Whenever we're touring overseas, I feel like Australian heavy bands are the talk of the town, especially in the US and Europe. Just because there are so many awesome bands working so hard to get over there. And I think in the end, it's kind of putting Australian music on the map in a different way around the world. So it's really, really cool to see that it's being recognized in that way. I'm just hoping that it keeps on growing and keeps on getting bigger."In the full interview, Marcus discussed Northlane's nomination for the 2025 APRA Awards, expressing excitement about the recognition alongside other Australian bands and the support from APRA. Marcus reflected on the growing international attention for Australian heavy music and the importance of regional tours, emphasizing the unique energy of smaller venue audiences compared to city crowds. He also addressed the band's musical evolution, with Marcus outlining their approach for the next album, which will build on the last EP's while allowing for experimentation with various styles. We took a look at the lighter side of the APRA Awards, including the potentially crippling effect Frenzal Rhomb had on such bands being invited to perform live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The Eternal Battle Of Man Verses Camel With JASON WHALLEY From FRENZAL RHOMB

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersAt the turn of the last century - around the same time the world was supposed to succumb to the flash in the pan that was the Y2K bug - a group of four Sydney punk reprobates called Frenzal Rhomb were plotting their own assault on the world. But instead of technology, this was a stealth attack by music. After previously making their name as carefree, wreckless, uncompromising punk rockers through albums Coughing Up A Storm, Not So Tough Now and Meet The Family, Frenzal Rhomb elected to go a little more mainstream on their fourth album, A Man's Not A Camel. So much so that the album contained a bona fide ballad - I Miss My Lung, and another on the cusp of being a ballad with You Are Not My Friend.Granted, A Man's Not A Camel provided some staple Frenzal moments with songs like It's Up To You, Do You Wanna Fight Me and the irresistible I Know Why Dinosaurs Became Extinct, and it also contained more than enough lashings of Frenzal humour, but it was also far enough on the right side of the musical ledger to have the song Never Had So Much Fun nominated for an ARIA Award in the Best Pop Release category.I shit you not. Thankfully a singing budgie by the name of Kylie Minogue pipped them at the post, otherwise who knows how far down the rabbit hole Frenzal Rhomb would have gone? And now, 26 years after it first came out, Frenzal Rhomb are celebrating the 25th (ish) Birthday of A Man's Not A Camel with an extensive Australian tour that will see the band travelling to places some of you might not even know exist.HEAVY tracked down Frenzal frontman Jason Whalley to take a trip down memory lane."That record seemed to resonate with people," Whalley nodded, stroking his chin. "It had all those songs on it like Never Had So Much Fun and You Are Not My Friend and I Miss My Lung and all that jazz. There's a lot of songs on there that, let's be honest, weren't very good. But it had a few songs on there that seemed to resonate with people. We are doing this tour where we're celebrating this record, but to be honest, we play all the good songs off that record every time we play anyway. We are pulling out some deep cuts too. I've had to relearn a lot of lyrics. I actually looked up the lyrics on the internet to try and figure out what they were, to try and relearn them."We ask if that means the whole of A Man's Not A Camel album will be played in full on tour."100% not," he countered. "We wouldn't do that to our audience. There's a few songs on there that just have not stood the test of time. I mean, even a week after it was released, we weren't playing them. When you see bands doing their whole album, I'm always like, come on, mate, they weren't all bangers."In the full interview, Jay discussed Frenzal Rhomb's upcoming shows in more detail, revealing the tour will include 25 shows in various locations that were missed during their last tour, allowing the band to reconnect with fans. He expressed enthusiasm for the tour and reflected on the band's evolution in songwriting on A Man's Not A Camel, noting a shift towards a more pop-oriented sound while emphasizing the importance of song quality over tempo. The conversation also covered Frenzal's experiences with the album's reception and their nomination at the ARIA's, where he recalled a memorable performance in hospital attire due to his broken arm. We discussed the album's release in the US under Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords, highlighting changes made to the tracklist and the unnecessary suggestion of a name change for the American market, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersThe last 12 months has seen punk rock outfit the Wolsten Butchers share the stage with some iconic punk rock acts like The Decline, and international punk stalwarts Guttermouth and Belvedere, but none of those experiences could have prepared them for the unexpected and massive success of the single Live Dead Die Fast which catapulted the name Wolsten Butchers into corners of the music world never before imagined. But now the fun really starts.Global success brings with it increased expectation and heightened scrutiny, so often the next track released can either make or break a band long term. So what do the Wolsten Butchers do?Release another absolute banger with Play These Games, further exploring the hard rock element of the band's musical psyche and keeping their foot flat to the floor in all relevant departments.HEAVY caught up with singer/guitarist Carl Jackson to find out about the new track and how the boys handled their sudden rise to prominence."It's the first thing I think I've done in my life that potentially I could say is highly anticipated," Jackson laughed about the impending release of the new single. "It's a blessing and a curse when you have a song that does really well, you have to… well I suppose you don't have to follow that up, but you want to. You want the same response as the last one, potentially even more. So I'm excited. I love the song. I love the clip. I'm really excited about what it is, but also just really nervous about what people are going to think."In the full interview, the discussion focused on the Wolston Butchers' upcoming single release, Play These Games, with Carl expressing both excitement and anxiety about following up their previous hit, Live Dead Die Fast. He described the new track as heavier, complemented by a bright music video concept that contrasts its intensity. He also reflected on the band's evolving sound and their openness to creating radio-friendly pop-punk music. The conversation also highlighted the band's energetic live performances, upcoming shows including a gig with Bodyjar, and participation in the We Belong Festival with Frenzal Rhomb.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Frenzal Rhomb are as reliable as Grandma's recipe for scones, and probably twice as durable. For more than 30 years now, Australia's masters of punk and ska have gone about their business unchecked, churning out consistently high-quality albums with tongue more than firmly planted in cheek. The lyrics - while relatively easy to digest - are also cutting, honest, raw and delivered with the spite of a rattlesnake yet still Frenzal Rhomb can seemingly do no wrong. After appearing at nearly every known Australian music festival in recent times, the Frenzal train was finally docked at an International festival in the form of Good Things 2023, and despite drawing the short straw and having to play at the same time as Limp Bizkit, still managed to draw plenty of punters to their corner of the arena over the three shows.Kris and Simon from HEAVY managed to catch frontman Jason Whalley not long before the third and final show, and he was in typically laconic form.NOTE - due to interviews being conducted backstage at a music festival the audio may not be 100% crisp at times

Interview by Kris PetersPunk royalty hits Australia next week when Californian punk legends Pennywise return to our shores as part of Good Things 2023.The lovable larrikins were only out here for a massive headlining run of shows last year, but such is the demand for their musical prowess and undeniable charm the good folk at Good Things have spun their plane straight back around and pointed it back in this direction.Pennywise will be joining Fall Out Boy, Limp Bizkit, Devo, Corey Taylor, Bullet For My Valentine, Behemoth, Sepultura, Enter Shikari, Frenzal Rhomb and more for a run of three shows through Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, with lead singer Fletcher telling HEAVY in a recent interview that the band is frothing at the bung to get back out here and play.Given their almost four decades of service to the Gods of Punk it is almost a given that Pennywise have played with pretty much every band on the planet at some stage of their careers, but that doesn't dampen Fletcher's spirit when it comes to festival gigs."I don't know the whole line-up, but I know there's a couple of Aussie bands that I haven't heard of but people said I should check out," he said. "I think we've done Bullet For My Valentine before. Devo… we've played so many big festivals that we've probably played with every single band (laughs) but we just haven't seen them. Darren Hawthorn is our guy over there and our usual tour manager, and he actually works for Good Things on the production side so he'll have our list of dos. He will be like 'you're going to watch this band today, let's go'. And we'll grab a couple of beers, and we'll go check it out. We'll be making the rounds for sure. Obviously, Devo is one of the bands that turned my life around and got me into punk rock, so I'll be checking them out as much as possible. And Limp Bizkit as well. I'm a fan. I know a lot of people wanna hate them, but we toured with them on the Warped Tour when they were tiny and there was 300 people wathing them play, and I liked it. I liked it from the get go. It's hard, it's heavy. Yeah, it can get kind of goofy at times, obviously, but they're all cool guys and have always been good to us, so I will definitely check out some Limp Bizkit. Fall Out Boy is another band. Not my real go-to cup of tea if you must know the truth, but great songwriters with a good live show. We'll be making the rounds. It's gonna be a great tour. I like the diversity."In the full interview, Fletcher tells us what it's like backstage at shows like this, catching up with old friends you might not have seen for a while, their sideshows and how they will differ from the festival appearances, the early days of the band and where they fit in, what makes the Californian punk scene so special and more.

Interview by Kyra-Jade CoombsEbolagoldfish are a 3-piece self-confessed ‘Past-Punk' band out of Sydney. Heavy had a chat with Gavan McDougall their bassist and after establishing that HEAVY Mag wasn't indeed a fat joke, we got onto talking about how Ebolagoldfish came to be, their newest single, Powers and what's coming up for the band.I had to know right away how they ended up calling themselves Ebolagoldfish. True to Aussie ‘culture' I was informed that the name came from the McDougall brother's father basically calling them idiots when trying to find something, like car keys for example. “What's that? A bowl of goldfish?” pointing at the ‘lost' keys, which evolved into ‘Ebolagoldfish'. Turns out the world doesn't have a sense of humour, which resulted in people reaching out the band on what to do with the goldfish to help someone with Ebola. Look out, we are going places as a society people…Now if you haven't watched the film clip that accompanies their newest single Powers you need to check it out. It's my sense of humour to a tee and had me cracking up from the get-go. It perfectly nods to the old school/ horrifically dubbed movies and has the boys running around the rolling hills of New South Wales in their white coveralls chasing rainbows. The song itself is catchy as fuck and has been on high rotation at my place, I really can't wait to hear more. The conversation somehow turned to the fact that I knocked my front tooth out. For those of you that don't know, Gavan and his twin Andy are the younger brothers of Linsday from Frenzal Rhomb. As it turns out I interviewed Linsday a few weeks ago, and he had to have his ‘2 cents' about my goddamn tooth asking if I got it fixed. I said I was during tax time and Gavan quickly clapped back with “I hope the gap ain't too big”. Gotta this thick skin in this industry, haha! This lot really did fall from the same tree. I would imagine Christmas time at the McDougall's would be a fucking scream!

You may have noticed a distinct lack of social media stuff and episodes being put out in the last few months. I got quite sick during almost the whole of March and into May after working hard professionally as well as on the High Frequency EP and the shows to support its release. I'd like to thank Ant and Corky for coming on the last episode to talk about the history of our band and the recording of our new EP ‘Some Songs You May Have Heard… But Not Like This!' which I hope you've listened to and enjoyed. I'd also like to thank the handful of listeners who checked in on me while I was away, I really appreciate it. I'm OK now and looking forward to getting back to work on the podcast. On this episode I cover the news from the last four months which concerns The Sisters of Mercy, The Mad Caddies, Moby, U.K. Subs, Yellowcard, Peter Murphy of Bauhaus, Danzig, Weezer, BGH, Blink-182, Less Than Jake, The Cure, Amyl And The Sniffers, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, Circle Jerks, Public Image Limited, vinyl sales, The Misfits, Devo, Doom Generator, Descendents, Adolescents, Dead Kennedys, Lektron, Flogging Molly, X, Siouxie Sioux, Crass, Alice Cooper, Social Distortion, Laura Jane Grace, The Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame, The Distillers, Sum 41, Rancid, The Hives, Dropkick Murphys, Stiff Little Fingers and Steve Jones, The Toy Dolls, Foo Fighters, Bowling For Soup, Lagwagon.   Single reviews include Bone Church by Slipknot, Over by Chvrches, 'Til The Anarchy's Restored by Flogging Molly, Raid by Doom Generator, Set Fazers, If I Could and L.O.V.E. Festivals & Shenanigans With LINDSAY MCDOUGALL From FRENZAL RHOMB

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Erin EddyThere aren't too many bands that are as Australian as Frenzal Rhomb. The tongue-in-cheek humour, the larrikin antics, the accented vocals, and the disorderly, rowdy energy are all traits synonymous with the punk rockers, who have been spreading their infectious high jinks and raucous music for 31 years now. Here at HEAVY, we took advantage of a moment with guitarist Lindsay McDougall while he was on the job at ABC Radio, Illawarra.“I'm speaking to you on the ABC's dime; That's right, this is taxpayer funded right now!” Lindsay cheekily told us.The purpose of our chat was to speak about the upcoming Spring Loaded Festival, which Frenzal Rhomb is featured on, as well as Lindsay himself being the MC for the event. But it's hard to speak with someone like Lindsay, from a band with as much history as Frenzal, and not slide a little off track and reflect on days past, especially if you're a long-time fan.In the following interview you'll hear discussion on the 2001 Big Day Out, stealing Killing Heidi's vodka, their VHS The Travelling Flea Circus and anecdotes about past experiences touring overseas. When we did speak of Spring Loaded, Lindsay expressed that the familiarity of sharing the line up with old friends is a definite joy.“It's nice playing with a bunch of old pricks that have the same level of cynicism as us,” he jokes, “I do wonder where the high jinks on this tour will come from and from which bands will the nonsense originate from.”“I'm excited to see who in the Shihad camp gets unnecessarily drunk by the end of it!”Given that this festival is stacked with a line up to make any 90's kid froth, we asked Lindsay whether Frenzal Rhomb's set was likely to be more geared toward a nostalgic vibe.“Nah, fuck that!” He laughs, “We do a lot of new stuff. We love not relying on nostalgia. We use nostalgia, we'll pull it out, but we've just put a new album out and we've loved playing songs from the new album at the last couple of shows that we've done. So if you've come to see us play just songs from Not So Tough Now, bad luck!”The new album Lindsay speaks of is titled The Cup Of Pestilence. It was released only last month, and Lindsay says the songs are more involved and complex than ever.“We wrote really hard songs to play and to sing. They seem to be only getting more difficult, too. Because we've all been playing instruments for long enough, Jason knows he can get away with writing these really hard songs for us to play.”If you're in the area, make sure you head to Sandstone Point for the Spring Loaded Festival atSandstone Point Hotel this Saturday June 3. Tickets are still on sale and can be purchased via Ticketmaster or Oztix. And if you can't make it to Spring Loaded, Frenzal Rhomb will be on the road across the country as they continue to tour their latest record The Cup Of Pestilence, so keep an eye out for dates near you.Have a listen to our full interview with Lindsay to get the complete scoop on all of this and more!

Interview by Kris PetersBrisbane indie guitar pop outfit Screamfeeder are another band from the 1990s that is still commanding attention on the national touring circuit. The band has released a total of seven albums - the most recent of which was Five Rooms last May - and are one of the few remaining bands from that era that are still producing regular content as well as playing live. They will form but one cog in next weekends Spring Loaded 2023 Festival at Brisbane's Sandstone Point Hotel, reuniting with fellow 90s classmates Spiderbait, Frenzal Rhomb, Magic Dirt, Ratcat, Bodyjar, Shihad and Eskimo Joe for a trip down memory lane and also one which proves the timeless nature of good Australian music.Bassist Kellie Lloyd joined HEAVY to discuss the show and revisit old memories."We've actually tried to broaden our set list a little bit for this show," she offered, "because Spring Loaded in particular is all about the 90s, so we tend to play songs that the audience will know. Not like stuff from our newer albums - because we've been continuing to put out albums - we brought out one last year, so we're not playing new stuff. We're playing all older stuff. We wanna make sure that we're appealing to the audience and what they are after."We mention the line-up and the old school nature of the bands, pointing out it's almost like a family reunion of sorts."We've played gigs with all of those bands," she nodded. "In the 90s we toured with Spiderbait and Magic Dirt and we've played with Shihad and Bodyjar and Ratcat. All of those bands we're all friends, so yeah, it is like a... it's not like a family reunion, it's more like a reconnection of people who are doing what they love. The audience is there to relive that part of their lives, and a lot of people might bring their kids along who are now teenagers or twenty - something's who grew up listening to this music. I call it a Nostalgia Fest because that's exactly what it is. It's really nostalgic, but it's also completely relevant. It's not like harking back to the past. All this music stands today and is still as vital as it was."In the full interview, Kellie discusses the importance of all Aussie festivals, runs through her best memories of each band on the bill, tells us what we can expect from their set, the early days of Screamfeeder and where they fit in, maintaining a musical presence and more.

But the favourableweather isn't the only drawcard this week.On Saturday June 3, the Sandstone Point Hotel is hosting Spring Loaded Festival.A delicious throw back for those of us who were big into the Triple J scene of the late 90's and early 2000's, Spring Loaded is serving up one mighty cocktail of Aussie music.HEAVY spoke with Tom Read of Bodyjar, one sliver of the Spring Loaded pie. He expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event proclaiming, “Get me up to Queensland fast!”The festival line up is exciting for the Bodyjar congregation due to being among so many friends. A sentiment that is likely shared across all the bands attending, which is only going to make for huge vibes on the day.“I have no excuse but to go hard,” said Tom, who will be taking the opportunity to stick around in Queensland for a holiday with his family after the festival, “I can't not get in the pit for Shihad.”Bodyjar and Shihad are joined by Magic Dirt, Spiderbait, Frenzal Rhomb, Eskimo Joe, Ratcat and Screamfeeder. Interview by Kris PetersThere's something to be said when it comes to nostalgia and Aussie music.Perhaps more so than any other music listening country in the world, Australia genuinely loves and respects music from eras gone by, recognising not only the current state and crop of Australian artists, but also paying homage to the bands who paved the way for a prolonged period of success. It doesn't hurt when these bands continue to not only tour - but do so with the same youthful zest and energy they delivered in their heyday. And when a festival like Spring Loaded comes along on a now yearly basis further proof of the credentials and staying power of Aussie talent is laid bare on one stage over one day for all to see. This years first Spring Loaded, to be held at Bribie Island's Sandstone Point Hotel on June 3, showcases the best of the best of yesteryear, with Spiderbait headlining and being joined by Frenzal Rhomb, Shihad, Magic Dirt, Bodyjar, Eskimo Joe, Ratcat and Screamfeeder. The festival is living testament to the longevity of Australian bands and music and is all the more special for the fact it is made up only of bands from this part of the world.Shihad are the only New Zealand band on the line-up and are eager to get out there and play songs from their most recent album Old Gods, which hasn't yet received the attention it deserves due to recent world events.Frontman Jon Toogood joined HEAVY to chat about Spring Loaded and Shihad's place in the line-up."Any opportunity to get me in front of a crowd with that band I'm real happy about," he smiled. "I'm pretty excited."We bring up the quality of bands on the bill and the fact they are still drawing crowds decades after they first came out."It's almost like the nineties all over again," he laughed. "I like these festivals because it's not too uncomfortable backstage because I know everybody (laughs). It's a nice vibe backstage. Everyone is past that really hyper-competitive bollocks that we used to do when we were young, so everyone gets along a lot better. We're there to absolutely slay, but back in the day at the Big Day Out and stuff it was cut-throat."In the full interview Jon talks about the drawing power of older bands like these, why they still succeed, some of the bands on the line-up and his best touring memory of them, what we can expect from Shihad's set, learning to manage yourself and your body as your career progresses, new material and more.

Interview by Kris PetersMagic Dirt have been a mainstay on the Australian music scene since their formation in 1991.They quickly became regulars on the touring circuit, appearing at festivals such as Big Day Out, Livid and Homebake, in the process earning a solid reputation as an energetic and formidable live unit, led by the charismatic and highly talented Adalita Srsen on vocals.Age has not wearied Magic Dirt, who are one of the main drawcards at Spring Loaded at the Sandstone Point Hotel on June 3 which features a host of iconic Australian bands including Spiderbait, Ratcat, Shihad, Frenzal Rhomb, Screamfeeder, Bodyjar and Eskimo Joe.HEAVY caught up with Adalita recently to celebrate the enduring goodness of Aussie rock bands."I can't wait!", she enthused. "Playing with all our mates and playing up in Brissie is always good for us Melbournites. We love going up there. We've done the festival a few times now and it's such a great feel. All our mates are all together - we used to play a lot back in the day. We used to do the Big Day Out's and Livid's and Homebake all together, all the time. This lineup is literally the Big Day Out lineup, the Aussie version. So it's like the Little Day out, but Ratcat are playing as well, who we are all so excited to see. They were the kind of Godfathers of pre-grunge and all that sort of stuff and they influenced a lot of the bands so we are all super fanning out to see Ratcat (laughs). It's gonna be huge. We haven't done Queensland in a while, so there's so many reasons to be looking forward to this show."In the full interview Adalita runs through the other bands on the bill and her best memories of playing with them, the importance of all Australian festivals like Spring Loaded, what we can expect from Magic Dirt on the day, the longevity of Aussie bands and why they are still relevant, upcoming plans and more.

We talk about their career, and touch on a whole bunch of bands from that period, including INXS before they became a huge stadium band. This podcast is the best way to hear about your rock'n'roll favourites from two mates who've been there and done that!  References:  Underground Lovers, Leaves Me Blind, Frenzal Rhomb, Neil Young, Barn, Paul Kelly, JPY, Computer Games, Midnight Oil, Space Race, INXS, Dogs in space, Richard Lowenstein  Dogs in Space Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0M2VTIvTEhY Dogs in SpaceMi-Sex on SpotifyNeil Young & Crazy Horse - Welcome Back (Official Music Video) Neil Young / Crazy Horse - Heading West (Official Music Video) Neil Young BarnUnderground Lovers
