INTERVIEW: Tūranga Morgan-Edmonds & Henry de Jong from Alien Weaponry on new album 'Te Rā' by Zac Hoffman on Radio One 91FM Dunedin
Interview by Kris PetersSince releasing their acclaimed debut album Tū (2018), New Zealand metal warriors Alien Weaponry have been lauded for their kinetic presence and sound, as well as their vital blend of culturally profound lyricism in both English and te reo Māori, the indigenous language of New Zealand.Still in their teens when that album took the world by storm and with the sudden burden of expectation thrust upon their shoulders, Alien Weaponry bunkered down, surrounding themselves with family and away from the clutches of industry people potentially looking to exploit both their talent and youth. It proved a masterstroke, with the young band following up with Tangaroa (2021) and earned them the title of 'the future of heavy metal' by Metal Hammer and led to tours around the world with the likes of Guns N' Roses, Gojira, Slayer and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. But, they say, a band's third album is the most defining one of their career and that moment has come with the impending release of Te Rā (March 28).Described as their heaviest, most powerful and mature offering to date, Alien Weaponry feel like they have returned with a point to prove. HEAVY caught up with the newest member of the band, bass player Tūranga Morgan-Edmonds, to find out more."I think we were definitely nervous going into the first single," he began when asked how the band are feeling about the album finally seeing the light of day. "I think the single probably had a lot more nerves surrounding it than the album itself. Because, you know, it's a new stage in the band's evolution and sound. And it's the first time I've been a part of the writing and recording process. And particularly because the first single was a song that I had written myself (laughs). So I was sort of like, Oh, God, what if people don't like it? That's my creative input that people don't like. But then of course the song came out and the response has been awesome. Now as we slowly trickle into the album release tomorrow there's been two more singles come out and people seem to love those as well."Talk turns to the music side of Te Rā and what sound they were trying to achieve."We took a step back," he measured. "Obviously, the first album was such a force onto the scene and left a strong impression on a lot of people when that came out in 2018. And the second album didn't quite land where they had wanted to. And when we went to the third album, we were sort of like, OK, what is it that we want to achieve? Are we trying to create a new sound entirely? Are we trying to create something familiar? And so what we decided on was trying to actually find a balance between the highlights of both albums, even the second one. So the second one, what people liked, of course, was the sort of move towards a more technical approach, so maybe more complication in the riffs and the writing structures. And then also a lot of people quite liked the much more traditional sounding Māori vocals, not just singing in another language, but singing in the style of that language, if that makes sense."In the full interview, Turanga further introduced the band's upcoming third album, Te Ra, highlighting the blend of genres and the incorporation of Te Reo Māori to maintain cultural authenticity. He shared his excitement about collaborating with Randy Blythe from Lamb of God, who contributed vocals to a track after their connection on Instagram, emphasizing the influence of Lamb of God on their music. Tu reflected on the band's growth from newcomers to respected figures in the metal scene, acknowledging the challenges of touring post-pandemic.He expressed optimism for a more extensive touring schedule following the album's release, with management actively working on overseas plans, went back to when he joined Alien Weaponry and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This weekend, emotional parents will be dropping off and farewelling their offspring off at universities around the country. Some first-year students will be heading into Halls of Residence and some into flats as they begin this new phase of navigating their lives with the kind of independence they've dreamt of, but now it's here in a strange mix of nerves, excitement, and the unknown. It's hard to say who will be more emotional about this rite of passage - the students, or their parents. My first born, my gorgeous, smart, fun-loving Oscar left home on Friday with his father on his way to the University of Canterbury. UC was the dream, to follow in his parents' footsteps. Yeah, nah. The dream was to leave home, study, and have an adventure at the same university most of his mates were going to! After 18 years of being the parent dealing with the more day to day aspects of our son's life, you'd think I would be an emotional wreck as my baby left home. Strangely I am not. But seriously, he is so excited and happy with his flat at the Halls, it's hard not to be excited for him. I will miss him terribly. But I know he's ready to go, and needs to go, and I believe our mother-son relationship will go to a new level when he does. I am sure a dip will come in time - it's that old parenting chestnut - when the kid is happy, you're happy - when they struggle, you struggle. I'm sure there will be tough moments ahead. A lot of my friends and colleagues are going through the same experience this month and everyone is dealing with it differently. But don't let that make you think you're alone in your grief. It is derailing to have the family dynamic change, it's natural to miss those random incidental conversations with your kid and having everyone around the dinner table and being part of their lives. Yesterday on Jack Tame's show, I reviewed a new documentary about 2 talented Northland brothers, Henry and Lewis de Jong, who became world famous at age 16 and 18 with their thrash metal band Alien Weaponry. Their parents have been incredible supportive of their boys - and at one of the boys 21sts - their mum gives a speech, and she says something like this - As a parent it's important to give your kids roots, and then give them wings. That's exactly it. The love doesn't stop, the support doesn't stop, we're always going to be there for our kids who are well grounded in who they are - but we've also got to encourage them to fly. I, for one, am also looking forward to a whole lot less washing. I think another reason why I am not too emotional about it all, is because I feel like I have been preparing for this for a while. Not just since finishing school and doing all the prep to head away. But I think I struggled with the loss of my gorgeous young boy when puberty hit. That stage when they go from cuddly, overly enthusiastic and communicative to grunters who can't remember why they crossed the room? As the parent dealing with the more day to day aspects of our kids' lives, I grieved for the loss of my little boy. I knew he'd be back, and he is - he's a gorgeous, smart, kind and happy young man, but I wonder whether that grief mothers experience when their sons are around 13 is an opportunity for them to slowly start preparing to let their boys go at 18. When he leaves, I will miss him terribly. But I know he's ready to go, and needs to go, and I believe our mother-son relationship will be going to a new level when he does. And is it bad to say that at this point, it's a bit of a relief to have one guest check out from the hotel I feel like I run at times? It's not for long either, he will be back in 8 weeks. He grew up in the Quinault Indian reservation on the Washington coast with a love for music, whether it was the loud guitar riffs of Metallica or the jazz improvisation of Thelonious Monk. In 2023, with no prior experience as a radio DJ, he applied to work on a new show Seattle radio station KEXP was launching that appealed to his academic and personal explorations of Indigenous music. He got the job and is today the co-host and DJ of “Sounds of Survivance.” Airing on Mondays, each episode exposes listeners to artists spanning musical continents and styles, from classical piano compositions by Navajo musician Connor Chee to thrash metal songs performed by New Zealand band Alien Weaponry in English and Te reo Māori. Pipeman found out how awesome Carnation are when he saw their show before their interview, but he learnt how cool these guys are after going to the Alien Weaponry and finding out they lended them a guitar to use on stage. At the show, the guys impressed Pipeman a lot, particularly vocally, as Pipeman was able to understand every word that was being said, which is not all the common in death metal and black metal. The guys talk about their name, and talk about how in Latin, Carnation means the colour of flesh. They talk about how hard it is to have a band name these days as everything is taken, as well as how some people get confused and show up to something they're not expecting when they see the name. After Hellfest, the guys have several festivals coming up, like Party Sam Festival in Germany, Brutal Assault in the Czech Republic and Metal Days in Slovenia to name a few. For more information you can go to carnationband.com. You can also go there visit the merch store their, or visit Season of Mist for US based purchases, which has a lot of their merch to.Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman is speaking to Alien Weaponry live from Hellfest in France. Pipeman actually went against his own rules before finishing up interviews because he saw the pit that was going on at the Alien Weaponry and he just had to get involved. Pipeman said they were comparable to the Discharge, GBH and Exploited pits he was in the day before. The guys also tell the story of how Carnation, who Pipeman also interviewed this weekend, saved the day and gave them a guitar after a drunk idiot got their plane cancelled. Pipeman asks them about touring with Gojira, which they say is one of their biggest influences so it's been pretty surreal to secure a tour with them, and even touring the US with them last year. That tour will be next year after they return to New Zealand for a while. There's also some pretty exciting stuff coming in the future so stay tuned for that! The guys tell and awesome story of how they got right up close and personal with Metallica at Welcome to Rockville, where James came over and sat down beside them and sparked a cigar. You can find the guys on all the social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, where everything is @alienweaponry. The guys also have a website where you can buy some merch, and be on the lookout for the merch booths at shows as they might have a couple of show exclusive pieces you can pick up.Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. What's the weirdest movie theater you've ever been to?With theaters opening back up, it's the perfect time for Eric to take us to an underground movie theater in Paris. Literally underground, in the catacombs.Next, Ben tells the tale of a serial killer who puts Jack the Ripper to shame. If he even existed. And lastly, Ian cranks the tunes and fucks up some pronunciation, because we are looking at three historic battles so devastating, heroic, or unusual, that they inspired songs by heavy metal bands.Let's get weird.https://linktr.ee/CulttalknetThe Trooper by Iron Maidenhttps://youtu.be/X4bgXH3sJ2QRu Ana Te Whenua by Alien Weaponryhttps://youtu.be/Lx_xGv70YyoAttack of the Dead Men by Sabatonhttps://youtu.be/LRNuWYvRtac
