The 60th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II was October 11, 2022. There have been a lot of misunderstandings about what really happened during the council. Fr. Blake Britton, author of Reclaiming Vatican II, joins Chenele to address common misconceptions, why the liturgy is a priority, and hope for the faith of millennials.

How can the parable of the sower teach us about the different audiences that need the new evangelization? What do young people need most by way of apologetics and evangelization? What should give us hope as a Church at this point in time? Fr. Blake Britton joins us to discuss these topics. The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. With the help of various guests, I defend three pillars of the Catholic Christian worldview: (1) the God of classical theism exists, (2) Jesus is our Messiah and Lord, and (3) He founded the Catholic Church. We place a strong emphasis on the first pillar, defending classical theism, drawing upon the work of Thomistic philosopher Dr. Edward Feser and many others. How should converts understand Vatican 2? For many converts, the endless debates and controversies surrounding the Second Vatican Council can become overwhelming and scandalizing. Joining Keith is Fr. Blake Britton, author of the new book "Reclaiming Vatican 2". In this book, Fr. Britton explains how to understand the differences between what people say Vatican 2 teaches vs what the documents actually say. This is a fascinating conversation that pulls no punches.
We join the table of Fr. Blake Britton, who brings his own character to the table, Pathos Anthropoi, The Ache of Humanity. He is the Zotani Nimi, the Living Memory, the last chosen priest and prophet to receive collective history and wisdom from ages past. He is forced to wander the lands after the collapse of his civilization, and he's looking for those brave enough to journey with him to solve the mystery of his people. “What most people assume is Vatican II is actually not Vatican II. It's this paracouncil, this false narrative constructed by these different theologians and thinkers, as opposed to the actual documentation itself," said Fr. Blake Britton, a priest in the Diocese of Orlando, a contributor to Word on Fire and author of "Reclaiming Vatican II: What It (Really) Said, What It Means, and How It Calls Us to Renew the Church" (Ave Maria Press / Word on Fire). As many seek to be faithful to the tradition of the church, they wonder what to do with Vatican II, this council that seems to be the source of so many problems in the Church today. Whether it's irreverent liturgies or heterodox theology, Vatican II is seen by many to be the birthplace of many ills. However, in this video I'm joined by Fr. Blake Britton as we take a deep dive into the history and texts of the Second Vatican Council. We explore why the council was called., what it teaches, and how the implementation of the council often radically differed from the teachings of the council. Get Fr. Ever wonder what's up with Vatican II? Don't worry you are not alone However, what you may have been told is a gross misinterpretation of the beauty and truth of the Council. Father Blake Britton joins me this week to share some insight on what Vatican II was meant to be and how it was in a sense hijacked. Get your copy of Father Blake's book Reclaiming Vatican II: What It (Really) Said, What It Means, and How It Calls Us to Renew the Church here.
During the past five decades, the Second Vatican Council has been alternately celebrated or maligned for its supposed break with tradition and embrace of the modern world. But what if we've gotten it all wrong? Have Catholics—both those who embrace the spirit of Vatican II and those who regard it with suspicion—misunderstood what the council was really about? Fr. Blake Britton discovered the truth and beauty of the council while he was in seminary and he has witnessed firsthand the power of its teachings in the life of his own parish. In his new book, Reclaiming Vatican II: What It (Really) Said, What It Means, and How It Calls Us to Renew the Church, Britton presses beyond the political narrative foisted upon the post-conciliar Church and contends that Vatican II was neither conservative nor liberal, but something much more beautiful and challenging. Today, Word on Fire Institute Fellow Robert Mixa sits down with Fr. Britton to discuss how Catholics can reclaim the teaching of Vatican II and embrace it as one of our greatest resources for being in the Church in a way that is faithful, engaged, and effective if we answer its radical call to worship and renewal. What is the false spirit of Vatican II and how can we articulate a true spirit of Vatican II? Should Catholics support Ad Orientam or Versus Populum in the sacred liturgy? What should we think about the use of the word "subsists" in the document Lumen Gentium? Did Pope St. John Paul II kiss the Quran and what follows from this? Fr. Blake Britton joins us to discuss these and further questions about Vatican II. The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. Fr. Blake Britton, a priest in the diocese of Orlando, says that you can begin evangelization at home by immersing your family in the Church's sacramental and liturgical life. He recommends examples such as praying the Liturgy of the Hours or making daily Mass a priority.
In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm re-joined by Father Blake Britton, the author of the fantastic new book Reclaiming Vatican II: What It (Really) Said, What It Means, and How It Calls Us to Renew the Church.Fr. Blake was a guest on this show exactly 100 episodes ago when we discussed Vatican II and what would, eventually, become this fantastic book. A book which has been sent, we learn, to every single bishop in the USA – it's really a mis-read book. Fr. Blake unpacks exactly what happened at the Second Vatican Council, how the agenda of the Council has been misunderstood and misapplied in the subsequent decades, and what we can do to truly live out the intentions of Vatican II as a movement of the Holy Spirit for the whole Church. It's an incredible conversation! For more, visit The Cordial Catholic. Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. There was a time before the Second Vatican Council, and there is a time after. The time before is old, outdated, stodgy, stale, and lifeless. The time after is modern, progressive, adaptive, active, and alive. Out with the old and in with the new. That, at least, is the way Vatican II has often been portrayed, as a breaking point between liberals and traditionalists, between those who want to be relevant and those who want to be ancient. But maybe by interpreting Vatican II that way, we are seeing something that isn't true. We are perhaps seeing a false image of the council, rather than seeing the council itself. That, in part, is what my guest on today's show has to say to us, and he wants to help the Church and the world to rediscover the Second Vatican Council for what it truly is, not for what we have been led to think about it, one way or another. Fr. Blake Britton is the author of Reclaiming Vatican II: What It (Really) Said, What It Means, and How It Calls Us to Renew the Church. Fr. Blake is a priest of the Diocese of Orlando, frequent writer for the Evangelization & Culture blog and journal, and cohost of the The Burrowshire Podcast.
