What happens when the host becomes the guest? Ina very special Episode 203 of On The Delo, Eric Walters of A Taste of AZ flips the mic to interview Delo and his father Ed DeLorenzo—the original "Delo"—in a rare, unfiltered father-son conversation about legacy, fitness, sales, and what it really means to build something that lasts. From Ed's Mr. Colorado bodybuilding titles and his 50+ years in insurance, to Delo's pivot from the music business into carving a restaurant hospitality niche, this conversation is packed with raw wisdom, honest stories, and real lessons on relationships, persistence, and knowing when to let go. The trio covers how the DeLorenzo legacy traces three generations—from Grandfather Guido selling kitchen equipment at iconic New York establishments, to Ed founding Ambassador Group, to Delo spending 26 years building a niche serving the hospitality industry. Along the way, they tackle the Pumpkin Patch Theory on firing bad clients, how honest selling beats slick tactics every time, health as a non-negotiable business pillar, and why people eating at their neighborhood restaurant still matter more than any transaction. If you've ever wondered how decades of experience pass from one generation to the next—or what it looks like to keep showing up at 77, five days a week—this one's for you.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:00 - 2:32) Role Reversal Intro: Eric Takes the Mic & Who Is the Original "Delo"?(2:33 - 4:20) Ed's Roots: Brooklyn, New Jersey, Colorado State Football & Moving West(4:21 - 7:30) The Fitness Foundation: Mr. Colorado, Working Out at 77 & Accountability(7:31 - 9:15) Pressure, Persistence & Knowing When Enough Is Enough(9:16 - 11:20) Three Generations: Grandfather Guido, Restaurant Roots & Ambassador Group(11:21 - 15:10) Sales Then vs. Now: Honest Selling, AI Disruption & The Human Advantage(15:11 - 21:00) Extrovert Introverts, Relationship Business & Firing Bad Clients(21:01 - 24:35) Delo's Story: Music, Diamond in the Rough & the First Restaurant Client(24:36 - 27:05) Learning from Dad: Breakfast Appointments, Phone Calls & Julian Wright(27:06 - 30:50) Health as Priority #1: Sobriety, Fitness & Knowing Your Numbers(30:51 - 34:10) Restaurant Trends: Drinking Less, Mocktails, Healthy Menus & Neighborhood Loyalty(34:11 - 37:25) The Future of Ambassador Group, Human Connection & Close

Stephanie shares her dynamic career journey across nonprofit response, consulting, federal service, and local government, offering a rare look at how diverse experiences shape strong, adaptable emergency managers. She explains why she wrote her book—to give newcomers the career guidance she wished she had starting out—and she outlines practical strategies for building confidence, exploring different roles, connecting with mentors, and developing the skills needed to thrive long term. John and Stephanie talk about the importance of professional curiosity, continuous learning, and saying yes to opportunities that broaden perspective, whether through volunteer deployments, community engagement, or cross-sector experience. Send us a textA single signed offer letter sat in the mail—and Art Delorenzo felt a tug that said, “this isn't it.” That gut check rerouted him from academia to a 50‑year run in financial services and leadership development. We invited Art back to explore how he makes choices, leads teams, and keeps his life centered, all through a lens that blends instinct, deliberate learning, and everyday kindness. We talk about the real mechanics of decision‑making: how cognition (research and analysis), affect (emotion and memory), and conation (instinct and drive) work together. Art introduces the Kolbe perspective on personal MO—why innovators need to reshape the standard kit and fact finders need more data before they move. We explore gut feelings and precognition as early signals worth respecting, plus a simple way to vet a new role: talk to the people who report to the leader you'd serve. Culture is local, and style matters more than the job description. From there, we dive into habits that compound. Art swears by short, consistent learning sessions to build cognitive strength, and he doubles retention by teaching what he just learned. We get honest about asking for help, humility as a performance tool, and why treating victory and defeat as impostors steadies a team. You'll also hear two practical rituals that change daily life fast: a three‑minute transition stop before walking in the door so you're truly home when you get home, and “joy reps”—eight brief acknowledgments that retrain the brain away from negativity bias. Add in kindness as a sleep aid—recalling a face you helped that day—and you've got a human system for better work and a better home life.If you've felt the hamster wheel spinning or you're weighing a leap, this conversation gives you a grounded way to decide, act, and stay well. Listen, share it with a friend who's at a crossroads, and if it hits home, subscribe and leave a review—what's one small practice you'll start today?Support the showhttps://bamboolab3.com/

In this compelling episode of Aspire to Lead, I'm joined by Richard DeLorenzo, founder of the Re-Inventing Schools Coalition, Roxy Mourant, CEO of CBE Ignited, and Jessica Enderson, COO of CBE Ignited, to explore the transformative power of Competency-Based Education (CBE). Together, we unpack the foundational principles from their book, Competency-Based Education Ignited, and examine how CBE differs from past reform efforts. We discuss why this student-centered, mastery-driven approach holds real promise for sustainability and equity in education. The team shares what mindset shifts are needed for teachers, how leaders can guide schools through the transition, and what it truly looks like when students take ownership of their learning. From redefining success to scaling system-wide change, this episode is filled with bold ideas, proven strategies, and the passion to reshape the future of learning. About Richard DeLorenzo: A dynamic leader who is part of the team leading the largest education reform ever from a traditional time-based model to a digital personal proficiency system that will impact over 72,000 schools in Russia. He founded the Re-Inventing Schools Coalition (RISC) to impact 1,000,000 children by scaling this system worldwide. Marzano Research purchased the foundation, which is now called Reinventing Schools https://rs.marzanoresearch.com.  About Jessica Enderson: Jessica Enderson is a nationally recognized leader in learner-centered transformation with over two decades of experience in education. The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid has been named North American Car of the Year, and nobody knows more about the car and process than NACTOY jurors Jack Nerad and Matt DeLorenzo, who host and co-host this week's show. They'll take you behind the scenes to discuss not only the winning vehicle but also the procedures that resulted in the choice of Honda's highly popular compact car. At the same time, Nerad and DeLorenzo will offer long looks at the winners of the North American Utility of the Year and North American Truck of the Year — the 2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz and the 2025 Ford Ranger. You'll hear commentary on these vehicles you won't get anywhere else. In our interview segment this week, you'll also hear a discussion you won't hear anywhere else. Russell Wager, Kia America's vice president of marketing, is our guest. Jack Nerad sat down with him to talk about the opportunities and challenges presented as the country transitions from the Biden years to the Trump era. Speaking of Biden, as one of his last acts in office, he and his Administration essentially banned Chinese-built cars from entering the U.S. market and, at the same time, banned vehicles with Chinese technology and hardware. We'll discuss the ramifications of that coming up. In our road test segment, guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo will detail the special virtues of the 2025 Infiniti QX55, and Jack Nerad will provide an in-depth report on the 2025 Hyundai Kona Electric — a vehicle that might be the best value among battery-electric vehicles right now. Honda introduced its 0 Series electric vehicles—the Honda 0 SUV and Honda 0 Saloon prototypes—at CES, and our guest co-host for the week, Matt DeLorenzo was on hand to report on them. Set for production in 2026 at its Ohio EV Hub, these “shockingly” styled models showcase innovative features like Honda's ASIMO OS, the company's custom operating system offering personalized mobility and “seamless” over-the-air updates. As DeLorenzo reports in this episode, the new production vehicles' peas-in-a-pod" styling is attention-getting, to say the least. Embracing a "Thin, Light, and Wise" design theme, they deliver spacious, flexible interiors, advanced digital experiences, and expected Level 3 automated driving. Both concepts use a “system-on-chip” (SoC) developed in partnership with Renesas Electronics to unify vehicle systems, and they also feature steer-by-wire technology and ultra-personalized driving modes. We'll have more details in this episode. This week's special guest is Paul Tyll, Director of Dodge Products — Musclecar. Host Jack had a chance to sit down for an in-depth interview with him during the recent introductory drive event for the all-new Dodge Charger Daytona. He knows more about that car than just about anyone, so tune in for that. He also talks about his directing process, how he reads a play over and over and over again before he starts putting it on his feet and how he believes there are always two plays going on in any given production; the play on stage and the story that's unfolding in the audience. Other topics include: his memories of seeing plays as a child, what he's observed about Gen Z as a faculty member at the California Institute of the Arts, working with Joan Rivers on her autobiographical play A Piece of Work, looking for actors who make his "heart leap" during the casting process, why he loves Los Angeles how he reacts to people whp say theater in LA sucks, and how "nothing good can ever come from reading reviews." https://www.bartdelorenzo.com/

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is the last of its generation, and all indications are it is going to be missed. This week, Host Jack Nerad got a special chance to say goodbye to the old and respected warrior as he took the wheel for the last time before an all-new 2025 model-year 4Runner arrives. While many are excited about the new 4Runner and its equally new turbocharged powerplant, a similar number seem wistful about the passing of the current generation SUV, which has proven itself tough as a month-old bag of jerky. Some of its toughness stems from its venerable normally aspirated V6 engine, which just seems to keep ticking and ticking no matter how old or what obstacles are thrown in its way. Nerad will tell us more about his last hurrah with the 4Runner in this episode. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will put the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek through its paces. While not as fully off-road capable as the 4Runner, it boasts some impressive off-road chops of its own. And despite its new body, it remains powered by the latest version of Subaru's famed boxer engines, another powerplant that has more than proven its worth. Teague will tell us more in the road test segment. This week our special guest is Matt DeLorenzo, author of How To Buy An Affordable Electric Car, a Tightwad's Guide to EV Ownership. An auto expert par excellence, DeLorenzo has been on the show several times before, and he always has an insightful point of view on individual cars and the car industry as a whole. Now, as electric vehicle sales have hit a lull, we'll talk with him about what is likely to end up in your driveway going forward. Will we have an all-electric future as so many have predicted? Or is an industry reset occurring before our eyes? DeLorenzo will give us his well-informed opinions. In the news this week, Jeep has confirmed it will re-launch its Renegade as a battery-electric vehicle for the 2027 model year. And it will have a base price of less than $25,000. We'll tell you more about Jeep's aggressive EV plans. Speaking of EVs, Tesla's Elon Musk will get his $56 billion pay package after all, at least if Tesla Motors' shareholders get their way. Musk has big plans for his Texas-based car company going forward, and we'll have more on that continuing saga. Another continuing saga isn't going nearly as well. Fisker Motors, an EV start-up helmed by car designer turned entrepreneur Henrik Fisker, has officially filed for bankruptcy. If everybody had an Ocean across the USA, then things would be different. But it looks like they won't. In more positive news, BMW has just pulled the curtain away from its all-new 2025 X3 small SUV. We'll have the details and our reactions to its new look. At least not yet anyway. We're still standing, warts and glaring faults and all. And you can forget the recent glory stories about our renaissance because we don't really need ‘em to validate us.We know who we are. And we know that the perception isn't often favorable. And we get that. But still there's an exuberance and spirit here that no interloper of a CEO can ever capture. It's a Detroit thing, or if you must, a Dee-troit thing, as Bob Seger so aptly put it. He shares many more stories about this Milwaukee band, including the name's origin, the invention of his tranceaphone and the jaw-dropping tale of how the Pretenders discovered Violent Femmes busking outside the theater and invited the trio to open for them that night. Violent Femmes' instant-classic self-titled debut sounded like nothing else, the third album was produced by Talking Heads' Jerry Harrison, and after five studio albums, DeLorenzo had had enough. The 2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country isn't a startling new development. It doesn't feature a groundbreaking engine or stunning piece of safety equipment. But in a month when snow, ice, and other inclement weather can occur almost anywhere, it is a very nice old friend to have around. In this episode of America on the Road, Host, Jack Nerad roadtests the V90 Cross Country in most of the weather conditions that February in Southern California can throw at a vehicle — including a blinding snowstorm. How did the hearty Swedish station wagon fare? He will have his report coming up. Our guest co-host this week is veteran author and auto journalist Matt DeLorenzo, who is subbing for Chris Teague. Matt is the author of How To Buy An Affordable Electric Car: A Tightwad's Guide to EV Ownership and a car expert par excellence. An always affable co-host, he will reveal his take on the 2024 Mazda CX-90 three-row sport utility vehicle. Its predecessor, the CX-9, had great road presence and a premium look, but the knock on it was it was too small. Does the CX-90 suffer the same twist of fate? DeLorenzo will have the answer. If you get in an accident these days, you might want to smile because you could be on candid camera. In this area of cheap electronics and frequent litigation, dash cams are all the (road) rage, and we'll tell you all about it. Meanwhile, we are ready for our closeup, Mr. DeMille. It's not every car company that also builds light tanks and a variety of aircraft, but Praga, the Prague-based company founded in 1907, is one such automaker. Having survived the perils of two world wars, Communist occupation, and the topsy-turvy market of the late 20th Century, Praga is poised to enter a new era with the initial production of the company's Praga Bohema road-legal hypercar in a dedicated facility in the Czech Republic. The stunning Bohema will be hand-built in very low numbers over the next four years. One of its calling cards is its incredible lightness of being. At less than 2,200 pounds, it offers one horsepower for every 3.14 pounds. Its 700 horsepower is impressive enough, even in this age of 1,000-horsepower electric cars, but that weight-to-power should result in a startlingly fast road car with remarkable handling. Praga says it “could well be the last all-new petrol-powered hypercar.” The $1.5 million all-carbon aero-driven two-seater built by Czech craftsmen is bound to pique hypercar collectors' interest. In other news this week, Volkswagen is celebrating 75 years in the American market, and we'll give you some of the highlights along the way and talk about the prospects for Volkswagen in the United States going forward. The Beetle first landed here for sale in 1949, and that began an incredible saga that continued in roller-coaster fashion to the present day. In other news, the Dubai Police have taken delivery of a very unlikely new police cruiser and added it to their fleet this week. We'll tell you what it is and how it all happened coming up. In the road test segment, guest Co-Host Matt DeLorenzo will tell us all about the exciting Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. If a hybrid Corvette sounds just too weird to you, be assured that it isn't. This super-powerful supercar competitor is a steal at its $100K+ price, and we'll tell you why. Also in the road test segment, Host Jack Nerad evaluated the 2024 Hyundai Santa Cruz small pickup on one of his frequent trips to the Palm Springs area. While a small pickup might not seem like the best choice for travel with his youngest daughter and wonderful wife, the Santa Cruz turned out to be more like a sports sedan with a huge trunk than a truck. Its 281-horsepower turbomotor got the party started, but it wasn't the whole story. We'll have the details. Finally, you probably heard that the Toyota Prius was named North American Car of the Year, but you probably don't know the inside story of how and why it won. DeLorenzo and Nerad, both members of the jury, will tell you in this episode. All that and more are coming up on America on the Road. McLaren has just introduced the McLaren GTS, a replacement for the GT, and we have the details. The grand tourer marries supercar performance with everyday practicality. Its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine boasts 626 horsepower, 14 more than its predecessor, and it's lighter at 3,351 pounds. The result is what McLaren claims is a class-leading power-to-weight ratio of 412 horsepower per ton. Clocking 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and 0-124 mph in 8.9 seconds, it outpaces the well-regarded GT. Its structure, rooted in McLaren's carbon fiber monocoque chassis, enhances agility and stability. Crafted with recycled carbon fiber components, the GTS boasts a lower center of gravity and intelligent adaptive suspension. The exterior flaunts a more aggressive design, enriched by gloss black finishes and personalization choices like 'Lava Grey' paint and 'Turbine' forged alloy wheels exclusive to the GTS. Inside, upgrades feature softgrain Aniline leather seats. The McLaren GTS is now open for orders, with McLaren promising deliveries in 2024. At the same time, Lexus has introduced a far more approachable car. The 2024 RZ lineup is now headlined by the newly announced RZ 300e, offering a 266-mile range and starting at $56,300. The front-wheel-drive model employs a 72.8kWh battery to feed a drivetrain that generates 201 horsepower. Lexus says it will deliver an EPA-estimated MPGe of 137/112/125 (city/highway/combined). The new RZ model features a rear subframe replacing the electric drive axle of the RZ 450e. The all-wheel-drive RZ 450e utilizes the Lexus DIRECT4 system, balancing torque between its 150-kW front and 80-kW rear eAxle motors. Total system horsepower is 308, and the trim offers a 220-mile range. Also in the news this week, a new study shows that Tesla drivers are the most accident-prone. And the drivers of other brands come in for some criticism as well. You'll be surprised to learn which brand's drivers get the most DUIs, for example. We'll have details. In this special edition direct from the North American Car of the Year announcement at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Host Jack Nerad and frequent Guest Host Matty DeLorenzo take incisive looks at the vehicles that made it to the next round -- and those that didn't. Nerad is vice president of the North American Car of the Year jury. DeLorenzo has served on the jury for decades. Each year, the 50-member jury of renowned industry experts evaluates all the new-to-the-market vehicles to determine which three special vehicles deserve the title North American Car of the Year, North American Truck of the Year, and North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. This year's competition is especially grueling because it pits battery-electrics against hybrids and conventionally powered vehicles. From full-size heavy-duty pickups to subcompact cars, the field is crammed with fascinating shapes and leading-edge tech. After weighing the positives and negatives of each vehicle in real-world driving, the NACTOY jurors cast their votes in a secret ballot audited by Deloitte. The three top vote-getters in each category are then named the Finalists for the prestigious awards. In this special report, DeLorenzo and Nerad will offer their opinions on each of the nine Finalists and share their thoughts on which could -- and perhaps should -- win in each category. And they'll also give their opinions on why some potential favorites in the field -- cars like the 2024 Ford Mustang and the 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray -- didn't make the cut. The competition is stiff, and the potential for disagreements is many. With electrics, hybrids, and conventionally powered vehicles in each category, the jurors get a chance to weigh the positives and negatives in real-world driving. The car of the year field includes mainstream cars like the Honda Accord and exotic newcomers like the Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray. The Making of VIOLENT FEMMES (Self-Titled) - featuring Gordon Gano, Brian Ritchie and Victor DeLorenzo

For the 40th anniversary of Violent Femmes' classic debut album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After bassist Brian Ritchie and drummer Victor DeLorenzo first started playing around Milwaukee as a rhythm section, they met a teenage songwriter named Gordon Gano. Despite having limited experience and still just being in high school, Gano had an extraordinary set of good songs that he had already written. Violent Femmes began playing as a trio but weren't able to get many gigs in town so they started playing acoustically on the street. One day they decided to play for a line of people outside the Oriental Theater who were there to see the Pretenders. James Honeyman-Scott was on a break from soundcheck and became interested in this band playing outside the theater. He convinced the rest of the Pretenders to listen and Chrissie Hynde ended up inviting the Femmes to open for them that night. Though the impromptu gig didn't lead to other opportunities, it gave them a boost of confidence to continue doing what they were doing. Shake Records became interested in releasing an album so they booked studio time with producer Mark Van Hecke. The label deal fell through but they decided to keep the studio time with the help of a loan from DeLorenzo's father. The recordings they made ended up on Slash Records' radar and they eventually released the Violent Femmes debut album as is in 1983. In this episode, Gordon Gano reflects on being a bored and lonely teenager who had a drive to write songs as a way to get out frustration. Brian Ritchie describes his unconventional approach to the acoustic bass guitar that helps give Violent Femmes their signature sound. Victor DeLorenzo offers his perspective on using brushes, a snare drum and his invention called the trancephone in order to have a simple setup that could be moved easily and played on the street. From being booed by thousands of Milwaukeans to punk music played acoustically to embracing the improvisation of Sun Ra to the first album as a mixtape that continues to get passed between generations, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.
