The Gospel Simplicity Podcast is centered around the conviction that the gospel is really good news. Here you will find conversations with Christians from various traditions as we seek to unpack the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. Gospel Simplicity is known for ecumenical dialogue that is charitable and open to learning from people with whom you might disagree. We believe that God desires for his Church to be one, united in love for God and neighbor, and on mission to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to all people.

He explores how Maximus's understanding of creation as incarnation challenges traditional views of time and the nature of the incarnation itself. Wood argues that the incarnation is not merely a historical event but the very logic of creation, revealing a deeper connection between God and humanity. He emphasizes the importance of scripture and personal experience in shaping Maximus's theological insights, ultimately presenting a vision of a God who desires to be in relationship with creation. In this conversation, JDW explores the implications of viewing creation as an incarnation, addressing concerns about pantheism and secularism. He discusses the ethical responsibilities that arise from this perspective, particularly in relation to how we treat the poor and the environment. The dialogue also delves into the theological implications of animals in heaven, drawing on the thoughts of Maximus. Furthermore, JDW reflects on the historical reception of Maximus's ideas and the dynamic nature of tradition in theology, emphasizing the importance of engaging with both historical and contemporary theological insights.Check out his book: https://amzn.to/4dpkFI8Check out his Substack: https://substack.com/@jordandanielwood1Read my writings: https://austinsuggs.substack.com/Chapters00:00 Introduction to Maximus and Universalism06:20 Maximus's Vision of Creation as Incarnation12:46 Theological Implications of Time and Incarnation22:28 Plan A vs. Plan B: The Nature of the Incarnation25:54 Maximus's Approach to Theology: Scripture and Experience33:17 The Ethical Implications of Creation as Incarnation39:20 The Nature of God and Creation46:45 Theological Reflections on Animals in Heaven52:37 Maximus and the Reception of Tradition01:01:01 Tradition and the Dynamic Nature of TheologySupport the show

In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Tim Perry to discuss his new book, When Politics Becomes Heresy. Before you fire off your hot takes in the comment section, the goal of this video is not to call out any individual politicians or to campaign for any given issues (not that there's anything inherently wrong in either of those things, mind you). Rather, in his book, Perry offers an interesting assessment of how old heresies are taking on new life in our political discourse. In this video, I'm joined by Sean Luke, whom I will now refer to as the best apologist for Protestantism you didn't know about (until today). In this discussion, we focus primarily on the arguments for Anglicanism, but in doing so, we touch on some of the key reasons to stay Protestant, even when you might really feel the pull to Rome. Topics include sola apostolica as an alternative to sola scriptura, why the episcopate is essential, and what keeps us from uniting with Rome, among other things. tFind him on YouTube: @anglicanaesthetics Subscribe to his substack: https://anglicanaesthetics.substack.com/Support the channel:Patreon: https://patreon.com/gospelsimplicity PayPal: https://paypal.me/gospelsimplicitySupport the show

And I'll go out on a limb in March to say it'll still be my favorite come December. Growing up, Traditionalist Catholicism (FSSP) was Kevin's whole life, which to many of you, might sound like paradise. After all, many of the people who watch my videos are deeply attracted to the most traditional forms of the Catholic faith. It's easy for me to understand why. Kevin, however, has a different story to share. Rather than finding this form of Catholicism life-giving, it was the opposite. Here, he tells his story, and shares what he wishes converts knew about this Catholic subculture before diving in head first. This video is not created to argue against any particular truth claims or convince you to go one way or the other. Instead, it's an effort to counterbalance the one way narrative online about traditional Catholicism. Whether you agree with Kevin or not, I hope you hear him out. In this video, I'm joined by Dr. Ephraim Radner to discuss his the paradox of church divisions, ecumenism, and more. Dr. Radner is one of the foremost experts on ecumenism and church divisions in the West. In this video, I'm joined by Dr. Steven Nemes to discuss his case for liberal Protestantism. Dr. Nemes spent years wondering if he needed to become Catholic and leave his Protestant upbringing. He ended up rejecting the claims of the Catholic church. However, he did not stop there. He realized that the nature of his disagreements with Roman Catholicism extended beyond the institution of the church centered in Rome. These disagreements went to the core of catholic Christianity as a whole - in other words, the majority of historical Christianity. This has led to his rejection of traditionalism, hierarchy, the Trinity, and the incarnation - all of which he has written on extensively. In this video, we discuss what Liberal Protestantism is, my objections to it, whether it can be called Christianity, and Dr. Nemes' views on the future of liberal theology. In this conversation, Gavin Ortlund, Ph.D., discusses the meaning of Protestantism as a renewal movement within the church. He emphasizes that Protestantism is not a rejection of other Christian traditions, but a reform and renewal effort based on the authority of Scripture. He also addresses the issue of institutional exclusivism and highlights the Protestant emphasis on the catholicity of the Church. Additionally, he explains his concerns with dogmas around the veneration of icons and the bodily assumption of Mary. The conversation explores the concepts of infallibility and authority within Protestantism, and the importance of abiding in Christ for assurance. However, just as quick was his rise to prominence as his fall from grace. After dying in battle, many of his contemporaries distanced themselves from him, and despite being contemporary with Luther, he receives only a small fraction of the attention other Reformers do in current studies of the Reformation. Dr. Bruce Gordon, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University, joins me in this episode to discuss the life and legacy of Ulrich Zwingli, which he outlines in more detail in his groundbreaking work God's Armed Prophet. My name is Austin, and I'm a 24 year old guy who's passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I'm out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. In this video, Orthodox priest, Fr. Laurent Cleenewerck, and Catholic Apologist, Erick Ybarra, discuss the papacy. However, this isn't your usual battle of proof texts. Instead, we dive deep into questions of ecclesiology which get to the root of the disagreement between Catholics and Orthodox. Throughout the course of the discussion, Fr. Laurent and Erick tackle questions like:1. Did Catholics and Orthodox EVER agree on the papacy? 2. What does Roman primacy mean?3. What can we learn from the Council of Serdica?4. When does papal primacy turn into papal supremacy?5. What's the nature of the Church?Fr Laurent Cleenewerck is an Orthodox priest serving as rector of St Innocent Orthodox Church in Eureka, California, in the Orthodox Church in America diocese of the West. He is among other things a graduate of the St Sergius Institute in Paris and current teaches theology for the Ukrainian Catholic University and for Euclid University. Was it an organic process, finished by the mid-second century? Was it an ecclesial process, formalized at 4th century councils? Or was it a conspiracy of power hungry bishops seeking to quell rival Christianities (shoutout to Barth Ehrman)?IN this interview, Dr. Benjamin Laird gives us a deep dive on how the canon came to be. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.About the host:Hey! So it is, often times, with the crucifixion of Jesus.
