The university is uniquely Catholic in its origin, and yet currently, higher level education on elite campuses is a “red-hot mess,” according to George Weigel. In this episode, Andrew Petiprin sits down with George Weigel to discuss academia and the intellectual life, not simply as a theoretical enterprise left for those who dwell in an ivory tower, but as driver of culture and social life. They discuss the role of the Church in academia, the scholarly legacy of Pope St. John Paul II, the importance fighting the culture war, and the troubles facing the Western civilization. These topics are also the focus of Weigel's most recent book “Pomp, Circumstance, and Unsolicited Advice: Commencement Addresses and University Lectures,” where he tells students that true academic learning is carrying on the great Catholic tradition.   Get Your Copy of “Pomp, Circumstance, and Unsolicited Advice”: https://ignatius.com/pomp-circumstance-and-unsolicited-advice-pcap/?searchid=2246581&search_query=pomp+circumstance   SUBSCRIBE to our channel and never miss an episode of the Ignatius Press Podcast. Whoever is chosen by the 133 voting Cardinals from all over the world will follow Pope Francis, the first Jesuit Pope who died last month. What kind of leader are the cardinals looking for and where is the church headed? On this episode of Free Expression, theologian, author and commentator George Weigel talks to Gerry Baker about what goes on in the conclave, why he thinks the Cardinals will choose a different character than the autocratic Francis, and how the growth of the Catholic faithful outside its traditional heartland of Europe could be changing the church.  Learn more about your ad choices. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageAt this pivotal moment in Catholic history, the Church prepares for a conclave that differs dramatically from its predecessors. Following Pope Francis's passing, 133 cardinal electors from over 70 countries will gather in Rome to select the 267th successor to St. Peter – a process shrouded in tradition yet facing unprecedented modern challenges. What makes this conclave unique? Unlike previous papal elections where cardinals shared cultural backgrounds and regular interactions, today's globally diverse College of Cardinals features many electors who barely know each other. Pope Francis deliberately appointed cardinals from historically underrepresented regions like Haiti, Mongolia, and Rwanda, creating what David Kaiser calls "the wild card" of this conclave – unfamiliarity among the very men tasked with this monumental decision.George Weigel's book "The Next Pope" provides crucial context, positioning this election at a "critical breakpoint" in the Church's fifth epochal transition – the ongoing shift from Counter-Reformation Catholicism to the Church of the New Evangelization. The evidence is clear: where Catholicism boldly proclaims unchanging truths without cultural accommodation, it flourishes spectacularly. Look to sub-Saharan Africa, where despite centuries of Islamic dominance, Catholic communities now thrive with 236 million faithful – representing nearly 19% of global Catholicism.Key Points from the Episode:• 133 cardinal electors from over 70 countries will participate in the conclave, likely beginning May 6-7• Many cardinals do not know each other well due to unprecedented geographic diversity• Hollywood's portrayal of conclaves (like the recent film) misrepresents Church realities• The Catholic Church has undergone five major transitions throughout its 2000-year history• George Weigel identifies key qualities needed in the next pope in his book "The Next Pope"• Churches teaching the full truth of Revelation without cultural accommodation are thriving globally• Sub-Saharan Africa represents extraordinary Catholic growth with 236 million Catholics (19% of global Catholic population)• The next pope must emphasize the universal call to holiness for all baptized Christians• Both lay Catholics and clergy need better understanding of their baptismal responsibility to evangelizeLet us pray for these cardinal electors, that they may have wisdom in their next election of the successor to the apostle Peter, and as always, let's keep fighting the good fight.Join us in our next episode as we examine the potential papal candidates who might soon guide the Barque of Peter through these challenging waters of faith.Other resources: Want to leave a review? From the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis has encouraged Catholics to speak boldly and to air their criticisms openly. Since, the pope initiated the three-year Synod on Synodality, critics of the process have done just that. One such critic is George Weigel, a distinguished senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and the author of numerous books including his latest, To Sanctify the World: The Vital Legacy of Vatican II. To better understand the concerns of those who are skeptical of the synod, Zac and Ashley spoke with George, who is in Rome contributing to First Thing's “Letters from the Synod” series. They discuss: - The confusion around what synodality really means and whether the synod is a good use of the church's “evangelical energy” - Whether George sees the synodal process as inherently problematic or if he's more concerned about who is, and isn't, in the synod hall - Whether the synod is in accordance with the vision of church articulated at the Second Vatican Council In Signs of the Times, Zac discusses where we are in the synod process and looks ahead to the drafting of the assembly's final document. I'm sure that curious title got you wondering what this week's interview is about! You will not want to miss my guest in the interview segment of Vatican Insider this weekend – Fr, Robert Sirico, co-founder and president emeritus of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty. Fr. Sirico is a prolific author, sought-after speaker and a good friend, and this week we talk about the late Cardinal George Pell and the synod on synodality as presented in Father's just-released book “Pell Contra Mundum.” Contra Mundum is an expression that describes a person with a steadfast commitment to one's values and the courage to go against the prevailing norms or majority consensus. An eye-opening conversation. The book is in 4 languages and eminently readable. In addition to what Fr. Sirico writes and the selected pieces by Cardinal Pell, there are contributions by Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai, Danny Casey, who worked alongside Cardinal Pell as director of the Vatican's Secretariat for the Economy, and George Weigel.

“Education,” wrote G. K. Chesterton, “is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another.” If Chesterton is right, then education is about transmitting a culture, for what is culture if not the embodiment of a society's soul? And what “soul” can be passed on from one human to another if it is not first embodied?  To discuss the importance of culture both to society generally and education specifically, we welcome to HeightsCast George Weigel, a distinguished senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and a New York Times bestselling author. In the episode, Mr. Weigel speaks about Pope St. John Paul II's “culture first” approach. Contrasting the late pope's view with Marx's view of economics as the primary driver of history and the Jacobin view of politics in the driver seat, Weigel explains the historical and philosophical roots of John Paul II's view of culture as the driving force in history.  Along the way, he discusses what culture is and what education has to do with it.  Recommended Resources  Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II by George Weigel John Paul II and the Priority of Culture by George Weigel  Also on the Forum  Family Culture with Alvaro de Vicente Creating a Culture of Learning in the Home by Alvaro de Vicente
