Do young people care about religion? Zac Davis and Ashley McKinless have good reason to think so. Together, they host the Jesuitical podcast, which explicitly calls itself “a podcast for young Catholics.” “Most people are left with trying to solve 27-year-old problems with an eighth grade religious formation,” says Zac. The solution, they believe, is not to take one's religion less seriously, but more. In this episode, they discuss the landscape of faith for young people in today's culture, as well as some of the pressing issues of abuse and injustice that they believe the Church, and American society at large, must address. In this weekend religion report, Fred Bodimer highlights Pope Francis' recent visit to Portugal for the annual World Youth Day Festival. The Pope quickly addresses the issue of sexual abuse by Portuguese clergy, as revealed in a report earlier this year, and apologizes for the scandals that have plagued the Church. He calls for ongoing purification and demands that victims be heard and supported. The report also focuses on the young Catholics attending the festival, who see Pope Francis as a rock star and admire his advocacy for migrants. Many of these youths come from various countries, showcasing the diversity and the future of the Church. While dealing with its legacy on youth and moving forward, the Church grapples with the challenge of addressing the issue of sexual abuse.

"What I've seen among the circles that I run in — and the survey, as well — is that a lot of young Catholics are looking to date and marry someone who is within the same camp or division inside the Church, as they are," said Rachel Hoover in this Respect Life Radio interview. "So, they're not just looking for fellow Catholics, they're looking for the right type of Catholic, so to speak, the type of Catholic that they are. Obviously, this is very limiting. There are already a relatively small number of faithful Catholics in the world; if you're shrinking your dating pool even further from that — to just the subset of Catholicism that you want to be in — and then thinking about things like the right age; do they find me attractive, at all; do they live in the same area or are they on the same dating website?  You go through all those filters, so to speak, and you'll end up with almost no one left.” Hoover, a writer based in Nashville, wrote a two-part article for The Catholic World Report: “Why aren't young Catholics marrying?” and “How to help Catholics get married.”   The first article references Hoover's "anonymous survey of 300 self-identified practicing Catholics ages 18-39, asking them about obstacles they faced to marriage" and cites four primary reasons: dysfunctional discernment; Catholic "camps" within the Church; parent and mentor influence; and the difficulty in knowing how to go on dates. The second article takes on each of those challenges and proposes solutions.

My parents' and grandparents' generations did something unprecedented in the history of the Church. When their ancestors attempted to transmit the traditional culture of the faith to them, and which had been handed down with great care and diligence from their ancestors, my parents generations said, no thanks, we're going to do it our way. We're going to invent our own Catholic culture based on the contemporary fashions of the popular culture which we are so enamored with. And if that's a legitimate process of cultural succession - to reject your ancestors' culture in favour of perpetually reinventing the culture to whatever might fit your personal preferences in a given moment of time, then the thing that the Catholics from my parents' generation need to realize is that their cultural and liturgical sensibilities are just as susceptible to that process as was their parents' generation. In other words, what goes around comes around. But what I found in those early days of my faith when we were pushing the envelope was that we weren't going to be given that same liberty as they themselves had seized upon. If you want young people to participate in the life of the Church today, and apparently this is a lamentation that has appeared in much of the listening sessions of the synod on synodality – that there are no young people attending mass – then baby boomers need to suppress their own cultural preferences in deference to those of successive generations like millennials in the same way that they expected their ancestors to embrace their cultural revolution. If there's an unwillingness to do that, then maybe we need to admit that that isn't a legitimate way for culture to progress from one generation to the next. Maybe it's a bad idea to treat your parents' and grandparents' culture with contempt in the hopes that you can seize the reigns and make it all about your own generation. This cultural incoherence is the reason there is a lack of young people in the Church today. They are being told they can't have a Catholic culture that reflects their own pop culture sensibilities, like their parents' generation were allowed to do, but also, they aren't allowed to embrace a tradition that is truly traditional. Instead, they have to inherit the anti-traditional tradition of the 1960s and treat it with the reverence and enthusiasm that the people of that time were unwilling to treat previous traditions with.

Debt, inflation, the soaring cost of living–why Pope Francis wants young Catholics to transform the economy

Does it seem like the economic deck is stacked against young people today? Inflation, debt, the cost of living and an overvalued housing market can be soul-crushing to younger generations trying to get on their feet and start their lives. The feelings of helplessness and isolation are not lost on Pope Francis, who is calling young Catholics working to transform economic systems to Assisi, Italy, this week. It's the first ever in-person meeting of The Economy of Francesco! Elizabeth Garlow, an American economist and new mom, will be there, and she joins Zac and Ashley on the podcast to discuss why the current system is failing young people. She's convinced that it is not enough to tweak the current system; a bold reimagining is necessary. And with the help of Pope Francis, these young Catholics are moving to the frontlines of the movement. How can the parable of the sower teach us about the different audiences that need the new evangelization? What do young people need most by way of apologetics and evangelization? What should give us hope as a Church at this point in time? Fr. Blake Britton joins us to discuss these topics. The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. With the help of various guests, I defend three pillars of the Catholic Christian worldview: (1) the God of classical theism exists, (2) Jesus is our Messiah and Lord, and (3) He founded the Catholic Church. We place a strong emphasis on the first pillar, defending classical theism, drawing upon the work of Thomistic philosopher Dr. Edward Feser and many others.   John DeRosa www.classicaltheism.com/support   Support the show: Check out my book One Less God Than You: How to Answer the Slogans, Cliches, and Fallacies that Atheists Use to Challenge Your Faith >> www.classicaltheism.com/newbook   Support on Patreon to help keep the podcast going and to allow me to produce even more quality content: www.classicaltheism.com/support

"God enters right into the messiness of backbiting and betrayal." Fr. Gerard returns as we continue our discussion on why people leave religion. We discuss the role of culture in the decision to disaffiliate from religion, and how attachment theory, the psychological way to understand how secure attachment happens, and how anxious and insecure attachment result from a lack of needs being met, may be a particularly helpful lens through which to view this phenomenon. We also talk about the natural "dark night" that happens as we move from our childhood faith and into our adult faith, and how challenges and questions are a natural part of that process. Millennials in the U.S. have been characterized as uninterested in religion, as defectors from religious institutions, and as agnostic about the role of religious identity in their culture. Amid the rise of so-called "nones," though, there has also been a countervailing trend: an increase in religious piety among some millennial Catholics. The Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS), which began evangelizing college students on American university campuses in 1998, hires recent college graduates to evangelize college students and promote an attractive and culturally savvy Catholicism. These millennial Catholics have personal relationships with Jesus, attend Mass daily, and know and defend papal teachings, while also being immersed in U.S. popular culture. With their skinny jeans, devotional tattoos, and large-framed glasses, FOCUS missionaries embody a hip, attractive style of Catholicism. They promote a faith that interweaves distinctly Catholic identity with outreach methods of twentieth-century evangelical Protestants and the anxieties of middle-class emerging adulthood. Though this new generation of missionaries lives according to strict gender essentialism prescribed by papal teachings-including the notions that men lead while women follow and that biology dictates gender roles-they also support stay-at-home fatherhood and women earning MBAs.  Millennial Missionaries: How a Group of Young Catholics Is Trying to Make Catholicism Cool (Oxford UP, 2019) examines how these young people navigate their Catholic and American identities in the twenty-first century. Illuminating the ways missionaries are reshaping American Catholic identity, Katherine Dugan explores the contemporary U.S. religious landscape from the perspective of millennials who proudly proclaim "I am Catholic"-and devote years of their lives to convincing others to do the same. Allison Isidore is the Assistant Director for the American Catholic Historical Association and is an Instructor of Record for the Religious Studies department at the University of Alabama. If you had a chance to ask Pope Francis one question, what would it be? That was not a hypothetical question for this week's guests. Emily Burke and Henry Glynn are two of the students who were selected to take part in “Building Bridges North-South: A Synodal Encounter Between Pope Francis and University Students,” hosted by Loyola University Chicago. The conversation centered on migration, and Emily and Henry used their time with Francis to talk about climate change refugees.  We ask these young climate activists what it was likely to speak with the pope, how they hope to get more members of the U.S. church, including priests and bishops, to make the climate a priority and how they stay hopeful in their fight for the planet. During his historic address to a joint session of Congress in 2015, Pope Francis raised up four virtuous Americans as models of citizenship: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton. That last name was certainly familiar to Catholics who came of age after Vatican II, but do young Catholics know much about this mid-century Trappist monk and author? Thomas Merton is best known for his spiritual autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain. But he was also a prolific letter writer and, though living in a monastery, engaged with the most pressing social and political issues of the 1950s and '60s: the civil rights movement, nuclear proliferation and the Vietnam War. In his new book, Man of Dialogue: Thomas Merton's Catholic Vision, Greg Hillis introduces Merton to the next generation of Catholics. We ask Greg why some question Merton's Catholicity, what we should make of the monk's brief affair with a nurse and why his writing is still relevant today. In Signs of the Times, we discuss Pope Francis' major overhaul of the Roman Curia and what it means for the mission of the church.  Links from the show: Join Jesuitical in Italy!
