Send a textIn this special kickoff to a three-part miniseries, Aaron Moncur and Brad Hirayama explore one of the most important—and often overlooked—skills in engineering: how to accelerate the speed of engineering work without sacrificing quality. Drawing insights from more than 300 episodes of the Being An Engineer podcast, Aaron has distilled recurring lessons from experienced engineers into 21 practical best practices. In this first episode, Aaron and Brad break down the first seven strategies that help engineers move faster, solve problems more effectively, and create more value for their teams and companies. The conversation focuses largely on what individual engineers can do today to work more efficiently—from choosing the right communication method and asking for help sooner, to troubleshooting systems more intelligently and leveraging off-the-shelf solutions instead of reinventing the wheel. Along the way, Aaron and Brad share real stories from engineering projects, lessons from early-career mistakes, and insights into how small improvements compound over time. They also discuss the broader impact of engineering speed: why moving faster doesn't just benefit businesses—it helps bring better technologies and solutions to the world sooner. In this episode, you'll learn: • Why picking up the phone can accelerate projects faster than email • How asking for help early prevents costly rabbit holes • A simple method for troubleshooting complex systems • Why basic experiments and data beat gut feelings in engineering decisions • When it's smarter to buy components instead of designing them • How off-the-shelf products can dramatically speed up prototyping • Why intentional extra effort and continuous improvement compound over time This is Part 1 of a 3-part series on accelerating engineering speed. In the next episode, Aaron and Brad continue the conversation with seven more best practices to help engineers and teams move faster and deliver results more effectively. The Marine Corps is gearing up to expand its first-person view drone capabilities in the New Year by purchasing 10,000 new platforms and increasing the number of troops who are trained on them, according to government contracting documents and service officials. Earlier this week, the Corps announced a standardized training program for small-sized unmanned aerial systems, which include several courses for attack drone operators, payload specialists and instructors. Several units, from III Marine Expeditionary Force in the Pacific to Marine Forces Special Operations Command are now authorized to immediately start these courses. Meanwhile, the service is also asking industry to make thousands of UAS for under $4,000 per unit, according to a request for information posted in December. The intent is for Marines to be able to modify these drones with “simple” third-party munitions and repair them on their own. The RFI also inquired about autonomy and machine learning integration for these systems. Over the next several months, the service will aim to certify hundreds of Marines to use FPV drones, according to the Pentagon, with the goal of having every infantry, reconnaissance and littoral combat team across the fleet equipped with these platforms by May. Officials said that these courses were shaped by recent certifications and the Drone Training Symposium in November, an event intended to solidify and scale training across the fleet. DefenseScoop also reported last week that the Marine Corps had certified forward-deployed Marines on FPV drones for the first time in November. More than two dozen troops with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit deployed to the Caribbean trained for more than a month-and-a-half to qualify on various FPV drone capabilities, a significant milestone for the force after a year of navigating untrodden ground. The Army recently established an artificial intelligence career field that select officers can transfer into starting next month, DefenseScoop has learned. It is also considering the potential for warrant officers to join the new role. The service created the 49B “area of concentration” for AI and Machine Learning on Oct. 31, according to Maj. Travis Shaw, a spokesperson for the Army. Between Jan. 5 and Feb. 6, 2026. Army officers who already have a few years of service or more can apply for the role through the Voluntary Transfer Incentive Program (VTIP), which is meant to support the Army's manning needs. It was unclear how many officers the Army hopes to transfer into the job, but those selected will reclassify by Oct. 1, 2026, Shaw said. The service expects those personnel to have completed their transition into the AI field by the following year. The effort comes as the Department of Defense continues to boost the use of large language model AI systems for military purposes. Earlier this month, the Pentagon launched GenAI.mil, a hub for commercial AI tools — one that DefenseScoop reported military personnel were meeting with mixed reviews and a bevy of questions about how to use it in their daily operations. The Army has also been embracing LLMs and AI, including through its Army Artificial Integration Center (AI2C), which was established in 2018 to integrate those systems into the service. If you're unsure what fishing rod you should be fishing for salmon — or you've bought gear in the past that never felt right on the water — this episode will clear the confusion fast.On this week's Fishing for a Reason, we sit down with founder of ProLite Rods Chris Wegeleben, who has spent nearly a decade building technique-specific fishing rods for salmon, halibut, and nationwide fisheries. Chris explains how choosing the right blank, power, and action directly affects your hookup rate, your fight control, and how many fish make it to the net.Instead of chasing brands or stiffness, you'll learn how to choose gear based on how you actually fish — whether that's trolling for kings in Puget Sound, or jigging heavy pipe for halibut in Alaska. If you want to stop guessing, start buying with confidence, and get more fish to the boat, this is the episode to listen to.What You'll Learn:How rod design actually affects landing ratesThe real role of rod blanks and materialsWhen to choose graphite, fiberglass, or composite tipsWhy longer rods help cushion king head-shakes near the boatHow to match power/action to your technique (downrigger, mooching, 360, jigging)The difference between durability-built guide rods and sensitivity-built rec rodsHow beginners should shop their first salmon rod without overspendingHalibut rod setup—lengths, fast tips, and why spiral wraps reduce torqueResources MentionedJOIN OUR INNER CIRCLE: Anglers Unlimited Gold MembershipProlite Rod Technology (Custom Builds, Take-Down Rods, Salmon & Halibut Gear)
Are you chasing AI because it sounds good, or because it actually solves a real problem in your freight brokerage? And are you protecting your data, your margins, and your relationships while you do it? Let's hear the real cost of AI in transportation and why proprietary AI and workflow automation can be a smarter long-term play in this episode with Herbert Orellana of Avanza BPO & Nearshoring and Sterling Engelhard of Data Gurus Group. We discuss AI adoption in freight brokerage, data security, private AI models, why optimizing your internal processes has to come before automation if you want real ROI, nearshore AI development, how logistics-focused teams can help control costs and protect data ownership, and why 90% of brokerage work can be automated—but the human touch is still the competitive edge that builds trust with shippers and carriers! Herbert Orellana Co‑Founder and COO of Avanza began his career at GlobalTranz in Scottsdale, AZ, where he thrived in a fast‑paced, tech‑driven freight brokerage environment. At Avanza, Herbert has been pivotal in scaling operations in Honduras, replicating the high‑pressure, SLA‑driven culture of American 3PLs within a nearshore model. His focus is on strategy and client success, partnering with 3PLs and FreightTech companies to design and build high‑performing nearshore teams that drive growth and efficiency. Sterling Engelhard Seasoned technology leader with 15+ years of experience building and scaling engineering, data, and product teams across North America and LATAM. Join Hackaday Editors Elliot Williams and Tom Nardi as they go over their picks for the best stories and hacks from the previous week. Things start off with a warning about the long-term viability of SSD backups, after which the discussion moves onto the limits of 3D printed PLA, the return of the Pebble smart watch, some unconventional aircraft, and an online KiCad schematic repository that has plenty of potential. You'll also hear about a remarkable conference badge made from e-waste electronic shelf labels, filling 3D prints with foam, and a tiny TV powered by the ESP32. The episode wraps up with our wish for hacker-friendly repair manuals, and an interesting tale of underwater engineering from D-Day. A popular debate is "build vs buy." Sadly, that's the wrong question. Here's the thing: shiny features and clever dashboards don't matter if you're solving the wrong problem. And picking the wrong path—custom tech when you don't need it, or off-the-shelf when it can't support your ambitions—can cost you six figures and months of lost momentum. In this episode of Tech for Non-Techies, Sophia walks you through a simple four-question scorecard to cut through the noise and make the right choice for your business. No jargon. No hype. Just a clear decision-making framework grounded in real founder behavior, operational limits, and what actually differentiates a tech venture today. In this episode, you will hear: The hidden trap founders fall into when they start with the solution instead of the problem When "good enough" off-the-shelf tools beat custom builds hands-down The scorecard Sophia uses to judge whether tech can become your competitive moat How to avoid blowing six figures on custom software you never needed Resources from this Episode Free AI Mini-Workshop for Non-Technical Founders Learn how to go from idea to a tested product using AI — in under 30 minutes. We've been tinkering with a lot of esoteric PC hardware stuff lately, so we're here with a roundup on what we've been up to this week that you'll hopefully find informative. We get into Microsoft's crackdown on the vulnerability in FanControl and other popular monitoring software, attempting to corral fan settings in UEFI as an alternative, and doing battle with the dreaded beat frequencies that can result from adjacent fan placement. Brad also gives a full trip report on his attempt to power a stack of hard drives with an external ATX power supply, with a detour into handy tips for de-pinning a modular power supply cable, stacking multiple hard drives, and more. And Will touches on his recent experience building a new studio PC in a rack-mounted case, plus some tidbits about the last electronics flea market of the year, Linux thread scheduling, Brad's first trip to Micro Center, Will's shiny new CRT (yes, another one), and more!Links for this episode:WinRing0: Why Windows is flagging your PC monitoring and fan control apps as a threat: https://www.theverge.com/report/629259/winring0-windows-defender-fan-control-pc-monitoring-alert-quarantineNoctua on fan placement and beat frequencies: https://noctua.at/en/fan-speed-offset-explainedStackable hard drive feet Brad bought: https://sednashop.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=95Seasonic pinout and cable compatibility info: https://seasonic.com/cable-compatibility/How to de-pin a power supply cable with two staples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6gQ5ie2Dw0Brad's NAS/hard drive setup and de-pinned cable: https://imgur.com/a/WKPwhCQ Support the Pod!
