May 14, Feast of Saint Matthias, Apostle - One of the Twelve

Read OnlineOne of the Twelve“You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.” Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the Eleven Apostles. Acts 1:24–26Matthias, the saint we honor today, was named an Apostle to replace Judas Iscariot after Judas betrayed Jesus and hanged himself. Matthias was likely from Galilee and had followed Jesus from the beginning of His public ministry. After Judas' death, Peter led the approximately 120 disciples in selecting Matthias through prayer and casting lots, ensuring the Apostles once again numbered twelve. This election occurred before Pentecost, so Matthias received the Holy Spirit alongside the other Apostles, affirming the Twelve as the foundational body of the Church.Matthias' selection is profoundly important for two primary reasons. First, by being counted along with the other eleven Apostles, the group once again numbered twelve. Though there are thousands of bishops today, the foundation began with twelve. Once they received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and began their apostolic ministries, their number grew as the Church expanded. Nonetheless, the foundation remained, symbolizing the Twelve Tribes of Israel and uniting the New Testament Church with the Old Covenant.Second, Matthias' election establishes a biblical foundation for apostolic succession, one of the four marks of the Church: “I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church” (Nicene Creed). By proclaiming the Church as “one,” we affirm that there is only one Church—“the one Church of Christ” (Vatican II, Lumen Gentium 8). While not all are visible members of this one Church, all who are united to Christ in a state of grace are part of His one Body. Nonetheless, “This Church, constituted and organized in the world as a society, subsists in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the Bishops in communion with him” (LG 8).The Church is “holy” because she is united to Christ, her divine Head, who is all-holy. As members of this Church, we are sanctified by Christ's grace, the sacraments, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that enable us to grow in holiness and reflect the sanctity of God Himself. The word “catholic” in the Creed is written in lowercase because it does not refer specifically to the Roman Catholic Church as an institution but to the broader meaning of the word “catholic,” which means “universal.” The one Church is universal in scope and mission, welcoming all people. It is the responsibility of the Church's members to share the Gospel with every person, seeking to draw all into full communion with the one visible Body of Christ. Finally, the Church is “apostolic,” which is especially celebrated in today's Feast of Saint Matthias. Every bishop alive today, every bishop in the past, and every bishop yet to be ordained until the end of time takes his episcopal roots from the Twelve Apostles, including Matthias, who received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.According to various traditions, the Apostle Matthias engaged in missionary activity in regions such as Cappadocia (modern-day Turkey), the Caspian Sea area (modern-day Georgia), and possibly as far south as Sudan and Ethiopia. He is believed to have died a martyr, either by crucifixion, stoning, or beheading. Though we do not know who succeeded him, we can be certain that he not only spread the Gospel and celebrated the Sacraments, but also ordained others to serve as apostles within the communities he helped to establish. As we honor Saint Matthias today, reflect on God's eternal wisdom in establishing the Church. God did not merely give us a set of rules to follow; He gave us a Church—His one Church—and entrusted His authority to sinful men who act in His name and convey His grace. Rejoice that you are a member of the Catholic Church, in which Christ's Church subsists. Pray not only for the mission of the Church, but also for those entrusted with apostolic responsibilities, passed on to them from the Twelve Apostles.Saint Matthias, you were counted among the Twelve and became an essential participant in the foundation of the Church. Through your apostolic ministry, you spread the Gospel far and wide, bringing grace and truth to those you were sent to serve. Please pray for me and for the entire Church, that we may always remain one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, so that the Gospel will continue to be spread to the ends of the earth. Saint Matthias, pray for me. In this episode Greg unpacks one of the most emotionally charged questions on the road to Rome: why does the Catholic Church ordain only men to the priesthood? Drawing from his own painful experience in the Christian Reformed Church's ordination battles of the 1990s, he shows how the debate shifts dramatically once you realize priestly authority is not about qualifications but about Christ acting in persona Christi as Bridegroom to His Bride. With clear teaching from Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, the Catechism, Pope Francis, and Pope Leo XIV's recent catechesis on Lumen Gentium, plus a deep dive into John Paul II's Theology of the Body, Greg explains the beauty of complementarity and how this teaching actually honors and elevates women. Listeners from Protestant backgrounds will find honest answers to common objections (Galatians 3:28, Phoebe, Junia) while everyone discovers the peace that comes from receiving Christ's design instead of redesigning it. Read OnlineThe mother of Jesus and his brothers arrived at the house. Standing outside, they sent word to Jesus and called him. A crowd seated around him told him, “Your mother and your brothers and your sisters are outside asking for you.” Mark 3:31–32In Jesus' time, family bloodlines were of great importance. They determined one's identity as part of the chosen people of Israel, the descendants of Abraham. Being part of God's covenantal family was understood primarily in terms of physical ancestry. Bloodlines also played a crucial role in determining rights to land ownership, which was tied to one's family lineage. This connection between lineage and land had important theological significance, as the Promised Land was a visible sign of God's covenant with Israel. The lineage of two of the Twelve Tribes of Israel held particular significance. Members of the Tribe of Levi were uniquely chosen to serve as priests in the Temple. Additionally, the Messiah was prophesied to descend from the Tribe of Judah, specifically from the line of King David. This gave David's lineage an elevated status. This significance is reflected in Matthew's and Luke's genealogies, which establishes Jesus' legal and spiritual claim as the promised Messiah. It is for these reasons that Jesus' words in today's Gospel surprised many. When Jesus' mother and his brothers—meaning His cousins or other extended family—arrived at the house where He was teaching, they wanted to see Him. First, it should be noted that in Jewish culture, there was no specific word for “cousins” or “extended family,” so the terms “brothers” and “sisters” were used more broadly. Naturally, those present might have expected Him to go out immediately to see them in deference to His familial ties. Yet He takes that opportunity to offer a new teaching when He asks the crowd, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” Answering His own question, He pointed to those around Him, saying, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:34–35).Jesus was in no way diminishing the value of His blood relatives. In fact, the bond He shared with His mother went far deeper than DNA. Instead, He used the opportunity to expand the people's natural familial bonds to include all those who were united spiritually. He taught that kinship in God's family is not based on physical descent but on obedience to His will. This redefinition transformed their understanding of what it means to belong to God's people, opening the door to new bonds of unity based in faith and grace.Today, families remain the most important foundation of life. “The family is, so to speak, the domestic church” (Lumen Gentium, 11). The family is chosen by God as the primary community from which love, virtue, and faith are born, making them a community of love, participating in the unity of the Trinity. However, natural family bonds are now expanded by the supernatural bonds we share through the Blood of Christ, which unites all of us more deeply. Ideally, those supernatural bonds are first experienced within natural families, but even when they are not, the supernatural bonds we share through Christ's Blood create a spiritual family that transcends earthly relationships. As Christians, we are called to extend this familial love beyond our households, embracing all who do the will of God as brothers and sisters in faith.Reflect today on the blessings and challenges you have within your own family. What is of paramount importance is that, within those natural bonds, we strive to move deeper, forging spiritual bonds that are eternal. Reflect also on your wider Christian community. Do you strive to build bonds of faith and charity with others? As you ponder Jesus' words today, look at your natural family and beyond, giving thanks for those who do the will of God, and work to foster deep relationships grounded in the new Bloodline of Christ's grace. Most Holy Trinity, You are the source of perfect harmony and unity, sharing a love that is beyond all understanding. Draw me, and all people, into that unity of love. Bless my natural family on earth and unite us ever more deeply through Your grace. Bless also my spiritual family, my brothers and sisters in faith, united by the bonds we share in fulfilling Your holy will. Jesus, I trust in You.  Image via Adobe StockSource: Free RSS feed from catholic-daily-reflections.com — Copyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Patrick confronts the pressing question of Islam’s influence in the West, questioning why secular societies seem to flourish while others struggle. Faith, identity, and immigration collide as Patrick shares the Church’s teachings on salvation for non-Catholics, sharing personal stories from listeners who wrestle with division in families and society. Tension ramps up as commentary from thought leaders and everyday individuals highlights anxiety about cultural change and the uncertainty clouding the future. Mary, Mediatrix of Grace? What the Church Really Teaches - Fr. Jason Lewis | 11/8/25

Who is Mary in God's plan of redemption? Is she “Co-Redemptrix”? “Mediatrix of All Graces”? What does the Church actually teach about these titles — and why has there been renewed discussion about them?In this special votive Mass, Fr. Jason offers clarity on the Blessed Virgin Mary's unique role in salvation history, following the recent doctrinal note Mater Populi Fidelis. The Church affirms that Jesus Christ alone is the one true Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5) — but His unique mediation is inclusive, not exclusive. In other words, Christ invites us to share in His saving work through participation, not competition. When we intercede, when we bring others to the faith, when we cooperate with grace, we are participating in His mediation.Mary's cooperation is utterly unique. From her “fiat” at the Annunciation to her suffering at the foot of the Cross, she united her will entirely to her Son's redemptive mission. As Vatican II teaches (Lumen Gentium 61), “The Blessed Virgin was the handmaid of the Lord in gaining for us the greatest of all graces — redemption and salvation.” Through her motherhood, she became the living vessel through which the Author of Grace Himself entered the world.Yet we must be clear: Mary is not divine, not a redeemer apart from Christ. She is the Mother of the Redeemer, the Mediatrix through whom God chose to send His grace into the world — the New Eve standing beside the New Adam, the Ark of the New Covenant seen in Revelation 11–12.As Fr. Jason reminds us, “Lex orandi, lex credendi” — as we pray, so we believe. The Church's liturgy itself honors Mary as “the Mother of Grace” and “Mediatrix of all graces,” reflecting the faith of the centuries. Through her perfect cooperation with God's will, she models how we, too, are called to cooperate in Christ's saving work.Let us love her, honor her, and imitate her — not as a rival to Christ, but as the first and greatest disciple of the Lord. A caller asks whether Muslims truly worship the same God as Christians. In this episode, Catholic apologist, Dr. Karlo Broussard, explains the Church's teaching from Lumen Gentium and the Catechism, clarifying how Islam's incomplete understanding of God still refers to the one true Creator. The conversation also touches on key differences between the faiths and what authentic interreligious respect looks like. For example, if a person views pornography but doesn’t believe it’s a mortal sin, is it still a mortal sin?  21:02 – How does the pope calling the crusades and saying going on a crusade forgives sins, fall into the doctrine of the papacy?  29:23 – Can you explain how Muslims worship the same God even with an incomplete understanding of him?  37:04 – I'm not Catholic. Patrick takes an unflinching look at a sensitive issue: the fate of souls who leave the Catholic Church. He discusses the grave implications of walking away from the faith, as explained by Catholic teaching. He dives into why the Catholic Church believes it's the true path to salvation, touches on scripture, and the necessity of baptism and the Eucharist. For those on a similar journey, he recommends “Lumen Gentium” by Pope Paul VI, and insightful reads like "Why Be Catholic?" and "Surprised by Truth."   Will - I am considering converting to the Catholic Church. You said that someone who left the Catholic Church wouldn't go to heaven. Does that mean that only Catholics go to heaven? (00:32) James - My mom left the Catholic Church when I was young and my aunt left the convent, and I don't think they are going to hell. I want to reassure the listeners that their loved ones are in heaven. (20:35) Kathy - I was offended by you when you said I wouldn't go to heaven if I wasn't Catholic. Now, I am in RCIA and want to thank you for saying it the way you did. (38:33) Melissa - I left the Church but came back. Had I stayed in the Protestant Church, I would have not been saved because I was living a bad life without boundaries. (42:20) Steve - I agree that the Catholic Church is the visible Church. I think that there is more space for people than you are giving to these people. I think there should be more mercy. (45:36) Herbert - I am 90 years old, and I am hurting. I don't understand how people can love Jesus. (47:35)
