Patrick opens with heartbreak, reading the U.S. Bishops’ response to the Minneapolis church shooting, then moves through the raw aftermath: a child’s shaken words, Mayor Frey’s press conference, and the overwhelming sadness gripping the Annunciation community. He questions the meaning behind public phrases like “thoughts and prayers,” tracing their use through pop culture and challenging listeners to go beyond slogans, turning attention to faith, conscience, and how Christians can respond authentically to suffering and violence. Voices from callers add urgency, raising concerns about mental health, media, and the roots of violence that stubbornly persist. Patrick shares the Statement of U.S. Bishops’ Vice President on Shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis (01:07) Audio: Young boy at Annunciation Church shooting describes what happened (02:27) Audio: Minneapolis Mayor, Jacob Frey: "Anybody that is going to use this as an opportunity to villainize our trans community or any community has lost touch with a common humanity. We have to be operating not out of hate for any group, but out of a love for our children.” (04:41) Patrick comments on “Thoughts and Prayers” as a slogan (06:18) Matt - I thought that Father Cormack Burke's book on the connection between pornography and violence was good. Do you think that this is a plausible reason for these mass shootings? (36:43) Dave - I think there is a difference between a properly formed conscience and ill-informed conscience. How could be a conscience be that malformed? What kind of mortal sins would you have to commit? (43:43)

Eucharistic processions have been a tradition in the Catholic Church for countless years. Recently, the Church in the United States celebrated the National Eucharistic Congress, which culminated four national Eucharistic processions and pilgrimage routes. This blogcast explores “Pilgrimage and the Eucharist as Food for the Journey" from the Ad Infinitum blog, written and read by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess. As you may know, we are in the final phase of the National Eucharistic Revival, “a three-year initiative sponsored by the Bishops of the United States to inspire and prepare the People of God to be formed, healed, converted, united, and sent out to a hurting and hungry world through a renewed encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist – the source and summit of our Catholic faith”. This initiative is a response to the Holy Father's call for a “pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are” so that the Church in the United States might be “permanently in a state of mission” (Evangelii Gaudium, 25). This final phase known as the “Year of Mission” is a response to the preceding stages of diocesan and parish revival as well as the National Eucharistic Congress that was held July 17-21, 2024.One beautiful expression of this missionary dimension of the Eucharistic Revival was the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage that took place leading up to the National Eucharistic Congress. The first of its kind, and one of the largest Eucharistic processions in history, consisted of four routes beginning at the northern, southern, eastern, and western parts of the United States. The routes formed the shape of a cross as pilgrims journeyed with the Blessed Sacrament across the whole country, blessing over 6,000 miles of our nation.Participants in the pilgrimage attended Mass every day of their journey and had regular evenings of reflection and adoration. After traveling for about two months, all four branches of the Pilgrimage met in Indianapolis for the National Eucharistic Congress. I was privileged to join a moment of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage along the northern route, known as the Marian route, which began at the headwaters of the Mississippi and wound its way through the midwestern United States. As the pilgrimage passed through Notre Dame, IN over the course of a weekend, I was able to attend a couple of the specially planned events. One was a musical entitled “Behold God's Love: A Eucharistic Musical,” which drew inspiration from mystery plays performed on the feast of Corpus Christi (the Body and Blood of Christ) in the Middle Ages. These plays presented moments from salvation history. The other special event was Sunday Mass in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart followed by a procession around the university's campus, culminating in Benediction offered from the steps of the Main Building. It was such a gift to join pilgrims, some of whom had been part of the route from the beginning, in a tangible manifestation of our life as “the pilgrim Church on earth”, the people of God on their way to their heavenly homeland. It provided an opportunity to reflect in a special way on one of the many names with which we refer to the Eucharist, one that evokes a certain aspect of the “inexhaustible richness of this sacrament” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1328). Viaticum, a Latin word that means provision for the journey, is a particularly fitting name to contemplate in the context of this pilgrimage, as the Eucharist is the spiritual food which sustains and nourishes us. Certainly, it was the source of sustenance for those making the cross-country journey over the course of several weeks. Yet this pilgrimage (and all pilgrimages) was undertaken to call to mind our common human condition as those marching onward “ ‘following the narrow way of the cross,' toward the heavenly banquet” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1344), when we can all be seated at the table of the Kingdom of God. The Eucharist as viaticum gives us the graces we need for each day as we advance along our earthly pilgrimage. Each step of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage reminds us that our entire lives and every place in which we find ourselves can be holy, consecrated by the presence of our Lord. When we receive the Lord in the Eucharist and accept the call to be sent forth on mission to every part of the world, we experience “a foretaste of that heavenly liturgy which is celebrated in the Holy City of Jerusalem toward which we journey as pilgrims, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God, Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1090). The National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, whether or not you were able to join it, shows a visible bond of communion that assures “the unity of the pilgrim Church” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 815) and reminds us that we do not  have to journey to far-off holy places to go on mission. Every place our feet touch can be holy ground if, as we tread it, we seek to draw ever closer to our Eucharistic Lord, who longs to make himself present to us and to all, not only in the Mass, but in every moment. Author:Fatima Monterrubio Cruess is the Resource Coordinator for the Catholic Apostolate Center. Revelation Dates: February 27 – March 15, 1833 Revelation Places: Kirtland, Ohio Section 89 - Historical Background: In a small upstairs room in Bishop Whitney's store, around 22 Elders gathered tightly together to attend the School of the Prophets. The purpose of the school was to learn the mysteries of God and sacred truths in preparation for their ministry. During the meeting, the Elders would light their pipes and smoke. When the pipe tobacco was exhausted, they would bite off a large piece of chewing tobacco. This was a common practice for the day. They had not been taught their bodies are considered sanctified tabernacles. The use of liquor, tobacco, coffee, tea and other stimulants were commonly accepted. Often, when Joseph entered the room to give instruction, he would find himself in a cloud of tobacco smoke. This, along with the complaints from Emma who cleaned the spittoons and the disgusting mess on the floor, made the Prophet think upon the matter. He inquired of the Lord and received this revelation, which went far beyond tobacco, known as the Word of Wisdom. Recap: For the health and general welfare of all the saints, the Lord reveals a Word of Wisdom. In consequence of evil and conspiring men, warns them to abstain from wine, strong drinks, tobacco, and hot drinks (later defined as coffee and tea). Rather, every herb and fruit should be used in the season. Meat is ordained for the use of man, sparingly. Grains is also ordained for the use of man and beast. Obedience to this warning promises health and wisdom. Section 90 - Historical Background: At this critical time of the restoration, the Lord knew his church was going into a perilous phase in its development. Over the next two years, the Lord would appoint relatively  inexperienced men to lead the church, including the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Seventy, Stake high councils, Stake Presidents and Bishops. These high offices and noble titles in the church would be a supreme test which many would fail. The Lord demonstrated a great deal of love and patience with these leaders. This section formally organizes the First Presidency who hold the keys of the Priesthood. It was shortly after this revelation was given that Joseph ordained Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams as Counselors in the First Presidency. Recap: The keys of the Priesthood are given to the First Presidency, consisting of Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams. They are to receive revelations for the entire church. The First Presidency are to set in order the church, learn and study, and continue in these offices for the remainder of their lives. There should be no pride, slothfulness or uncleanliness. Section 91 - Historical Background: At this time, Joseph was revising the Old Testament. He came across the books referred to as the “Apocrypha,” meaning “hidden,” and didn't know if they were worthy of including in the bible or were merely an appendix to the bible. He took this inquiry to the Lord. Recap: In the Apocrypha, there are many aspects which are true, but many things are not true. Therefore, they are not trustworthy to be included with the bible, nor should they be translated or revised. The Apocrypha should not be intermingled with the revelations from God. Any person led by the Spirit can benefit from the Apocrypha, but without the Spirit there is no benefit.  Section 92 - Historical Background: This revelation relates to an earlier revelation in section 82, relating to the Law of Consecration. Now the Lord wants Frederick G. Williams added to the order. Recap: As a new counselor in the First Presidency, the Lord commands Frederick G. Williams to be included in the United Order, known as the Law of Consecration.

In this lively conclusion to a three-part series looking at myths about Catholicism, Greg and Ed the Protestant unpack how "Hollywood"—from Reformation-era propaganda to modern films, novels, and TV—ingrains unconscious biases against Catholicism through tropes like fat, greedy bishops, ugly scheming monks, mean ruler-wielding nuns, and spooky cathedrals that twist sacred awe into dread. They challenge the pervasive vibe that nobody truly believed the faith, portraying it as an elaborate con everyone winked at, questioning how such a "scam" could endure for centuries with genuine devotion from saints, martyrs, and everyday believers. Drawing on the "Gell-Mann Amnesia Effect" and personal anecdotes—like Protestant pastors' misconceptions and the absurd "candle-lighting priest" cliché—they highlight how these visceral impressions hinder apologetics, much like racial stereotypes, and urge listeners to investigate the Church firsthand beyond media distortions and "common knowledge" to discover authentic faith.
