Today, we read CCC, 857 - 870 and finish discussing the four marks of the Church. In addition to being one, holy, and catholic, the Church is apostolic. Founded on the 12 apostles and continued by their successors, the bishops, Christ sets up a means of handing on his Truth. But how do we reconcile the imperfection of the leadership of the Church and the handing on of the perfect Truth entrusted to them?

Noelle McBride is a professional motivational speaker and teacher with over 20 years of experience counseling and teaching women in groups and individually. She currently leads women in gospel-based workshops that are focused on overcoming the trials and hardships of divorce. She also serves as an ordinance worker in the Seattle Temple and in her stake Relief Society presidency. After having been blessed with three children during a 17-year marriage, Noelle went through a difficult and heartbreaking divorce. Notwithstanding this hardship, she experienced much healing and hope in her personal life, through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Desiring to help other women navigate the same trial, Noelle shares the promises and peace of the gospel in her first published book, Beauty for Ashes: Divorce and the Latter-day Saint Woman. Highlights 03:15 Noelle explains why she wrote her book and what led her to write it 04:30 Noelle shares her story of marriage, divorce, being single, and getting remarried 06:40 What was the breaking point in the marriage? 08:00 How do you know you're healed? What does that feel like? 10:30 Divorce is like the death of a marriage. There is a grieving process to go through. 11:15 When you marry someone your hearts are knitted together. Divorce rips them apart. True healing of your heart only comes through Jesus Christ not outside sources. 12:25 Noelle served a mission of sorts after her divorce. When she wasn't with her children she would go out with the sister missionaries. She followed a routine similar to the missionaries to aid her in her healing. 16:00 Sometimes when we are hurting and grieving we seek for outside sources instead of going to Christ 19:30 Concepts and questions that leaders can ask to help someone going through a divorce 21:30 Noelle shares things that leaders did in her ward that helped her get through her divorce 24:00 The power of being present and just sitting with someone 26:30 As leaders we need to keep members' names safe. Allow people to share the details of their situation that they want to share. 28:45 Noelle shares the dynamics of staying in the same ward as her ex husband and how she navigated it. She always had someone to sit with. 33:10 What a leader should do when a man or woman comes in and says they are getting divorced. Leaders need to respect personal revelation and allow them to have space and silence to receive revelation. 40:20 Kurt shares his experience as a bishop working with divorcees. Exodus - 47 Lesson 4 - Exod. 20:1-2 - 1ST COMMANDMENT IN CONTEXT

LIGHT OF MENORAH

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2022 39:19

After the three introductory videos we now begin the study of Exod. 20:1-17 – the exact words of the Lord or as is known in the original Hebrew, עשׂרת הדברים Aseret HaDevareem, the Ten Words or better is the Ten Statements.  We found in the introductory videos in Lesson 1 Part 1 and Part 2 there is no such thing as Ten Commandments in the original Hebrew.  It was a mistranslation of the church in the late 1500's.  In Biblical Hebrew, the Ten Commandments, called עשרת הדיברות‎ (transliterated aseret ha-dibrot), are mentioned at Exodus 34:28, Deuteronomy 4:13 and Deuteronomy 10:4.  In all sources, the terms are translatable as "the ten words", "the ten sayings", or "the ten matters". In the Septuagint (or LXX), the "ten words" was translated as "Decalogue", which is derived from Greek δεκάλογος, dekalogos, the latter meaning and referring to the Greek translation (in accusative) δέκα λόγους, deka logous. This term is also sometimes used in English, in addition to Ten Commandments. The Tyndale and Coverdale English biblical translations used "nine verses". The Geneva Bible used "ten commandments", which was followed by the Bishops' Bible and the Authorized Version (the "King James" version) as "ten commandments". Most major English versions use the word "commandments".  (Taken from Wikipedia) But the idea of Ten Commandments stuck and now we have at least three official versions; the Jewish version, the Catholic and Protestant.  All three are different and are subject to the view of the translator and NOT the actual words of the Bible.  Shown below are the three versions. (From Hebrew4Christians.com) In these lessons we will study עשׂרת הדברים Aseret HaDevareem with the understanding that the Ten Commandments are embedded in the Ten Statements.  Our goal is to study the Ten Commandments in their textual context; study the commandments in the Aseret HaDevareem.  So, in this lesson we consider Exod. 2:1-2 or … Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.”  (Exo 20:1-2) The Catholic and Protestant versions do not have the phrase “who brought you out of the land of Egypt.”  Why? Why did they leave God's words out?  So as we study verses 1-2 we will see that if you are a Catholic or if you are a Protestant or some type of non-Catholic, the missing phrase is critical.  We can not study whatever version of the Ten Commandments and not understand how this relates to us as Gentile believers in the 21st century.  This also goes for the phrase “out of the house of slavery.”  Once again this is left out of the Christian list.  By doing this we miss what God might be probably to teach His chosen one then and us, us who have been grafted in to the olve tree of Israel.  We must study עשׂרת הדברים Aseret HaDevareem and thus to understand the Ten Commandments in their context.  Rev. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church Lectionary: 444All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint John ChrysostomThe ambiguity and intrigue surrounding John, the great preacher (his name means “golden-mouthed”) from Antioch, are characteristic of the life of any great man in a capital city. Brought to Constantinople after a dozen years of priestly service in Syria, John found himself the reluctant victim of an imperial ruse to make him bishop in the greatest city of the empire. Ascetic, unimposing but dignified, and troubled by stomach ailments from his desert days as a monk, John became a bishop under the cloud of imperial politics. If his body was weak, his tongue was powerful. The content of his sermons, his exegesis of Scripture, were never without a point. Sometimes the point stung the high and mighty. Some sermons lasted up to two hours. His lifestyle at the imperial court was not appreciated by many courtiers. He offered a modest table to episcopal sycophants hanging around for imperial and ecclesiastical favors. John deplored the court protocol that accorded him precedence before the highest state officials. He would not be a kept man. His zeal led him to decisive action. Bishops who bribed their way into office were deposed. Many of his sermons called for concrete steps to share wealth with the poor. The rich did not appreciate hearing from John that private property existed because of Adam's fall from grace any more than married men liked to hear that they were bound to marital fidelity just as much as their wives were. When it came to justice and charity, John acknowledged no double standards. Aloof, energetic, outspoken, especially when he became excited in the pulpit, John was a sure target for criticism and personal trouble. He was accused of gorging himself secretly on rich wines and fine foods. His faithfulness as spiritual director to the rich widow, Olympia, provoked much gossip attempting to prove him a hypocrite where wealth and chastity were concerned. His actions taken against unworthy bishops in Asia Minor were viewed by other ecclesiastics as a greedy, uncanonical extension of his authority. Theophilus, archbishop of Alexandria, and Empress Eudoxia were determined to discredit John. Theophilus feared the growth in importance of the Bishop of Constantinople and took occasion to charge John with fostering heresy. Theophilus and other angered bishops were supported by Eudoxia. The empress resented his sermons contrasting gospel values with the excesses of imperial court life. Whether intended or not, sermons mentioning the lurid Jezebel and impious Herodias were associated with the empress, who finally did manage to have John exiled. He died in exile in 407. Reflection John Chrysostom's preaching, by word and example, exemplifies the role of the prophet to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable. For his honesty and courage, he paid the price of a turbulent ministry as bishop, personal vilification, and exile. ‘When they go low, we go high.' - That's what Michelle Obama said. The former American first lady's comments came to mind as I listened to Sydney Archbishop Kanishka Raffel give his first presidential address to the Sydney Synod since being elected during Covid. Archbishop Raffel's ‘Do you see the crowds' address at Oran Park was mission driven and gospel focused, particularly asking how to reach the new housing estates where 30 new churches are needed to reach the hundreds of thousands of people who are moving into the Greenfields areas to the west of Sydney. There was no mention of Brisbane. It was a stunning contrast to South East Queensland Archbishop's Phillip Aspinall's hand grenade presentation, attacking evangelicals and Sydney Anglicans, which has so far led to the resignations of two of his ministers and the splitting of two Brisbane congregations. The second minister to resign in Brisbane is Peter Judge Mears.   St John's Wishart spent Sunday processing the news, and the news that they are being invited to join the new Southside Anglican Church, the second congregation of the new Diocese of the Southern Cross, created as a life boat to support orthodox Christians forced out by revisionist Bishops.Support the show

They always have a great tap list and an impressive bottle list. We're joined by Pontus to try Pentrich Brewing Saint Monday first. This Wee Heavy is a collaboration with Cult of Oak. Brewed with maple syrup, it's rich caramel and toffee notes are complimented with a light smokey back flavor. Hidden Springs on tap is exciting. It's kind of crazy we can get them in Sweden. Life on Standby is an apple brandy barrel aged English-style barleywine. It's boozy and intense.

This week, as Disciples Together on the Way, Bishop Earl Boyea is taking us on retreat. What's a retreat? Bishop Boyea explains: "That's time away from the business of daily life, often in solitude, often in silence, often directed by a spiritual guide." Bishops and priests are required in Canon Law to make a retreat yearly."All of us, though, are called to holiness. Sisters and brothers, we are all called to be saints! Hence, it is good that we all make a retreat in order to discern God's call in our lives. And that's exactly what we'll do over the next four weeks as Disciples Together on the Way."  "So, now here is what we will be doing: this week and for the next three following weeks we will be going on retreat.  The busy person kind of retreat. So, early every morning for 30 days we'll text you an installment of a 30-day Ignatian retreat that has been developed by St. Mary Catholic Center at Texas A&M University. It is called Taking Back the Crown and was created to reach out to students." Click here for link to 30-day Ignatian retreat: https://anchor.fm/takingbackthecrown/episodes/Day-1---Getting-Started-on-Retreat-St--Ignatius--an-Act-of-Presence-ebogud

Father James Altman speaks with Bishop Michael Petro at General Flynn's and Clay Clark's ReAwaken America Tour in Virginia Beach, VA. In this interview Father James Altman discusses why he was canceled as a priest due to his comments on the vaccine, democrats, and abortion such as “You can't be a Catholic and a Democrat.” He also shares why Nancy Pelossi should have been ex-communicated from Catholicism, calls out the 17 Bishops who did support Archbishop Cordileone who did deny Pelosi Communion over her support of abortion rights saying where have they been on this issue during the last 50 years? Where have they been since they took office as a bishop in the Catholic Church? Why are they all of a sudden taking a stance is his argument. Altman is also very clear on his stance and perspective on Pope Francis stating he is as evil aas they come off camera. On camera he states Francis is a liar, only preaches pastorally when it suits him, and a teacher of false ideologies promoting it throughout the world. He also doesn't understand why Chelsea Clinton was invited to the Vatican when her mother and father are the biggest and vigorous supporters of murdering babies nor why Jesuit Priest James Martin who pushes homosexuality was also invited to the Vatican. James Altman is a Catholic priest who received attention in August 2020, in the months before the 2020 United States presidential election, Altman gained attention after appearing in a viral YouTube video. In the video, Altman stated that “You cannot be Catholic and be a Democrat”, due to the party's support of abortion legalization. He encouraged Catholic Democrats to “repent of your support of that party and its platform or face the fires of hell...There will be 60 million aborted babies standing at the gates of heaven barring your Democrat entrance.” Altman has since contended that the Jan. 6 riots in the U.S. Capitol by a medley of supporters of President Donald Trump and the QAnon movement were a “false flag.” His messages to parishioners in April parish bulletins claimed that the COVID-19 vaccines are an “experimental” use of “a genetic altering substance that modifies YOUR BODY - YOUR Temple of the Holy Spirit.” In May 2021, Altman announced that Callahan had requested his resignation as a pastor, and that he would contest the request with the diocese. In July, Callahan issued a decree for the removal of Altman as pastor from St. James the Less Parish.Callahan stated that Altman would remain a priest in the diocese, and continued to be paid, but would no longer be allowed to preach publicly. Friends of the Rosary: As we read today (MT 23:1-12), at that time, Jesus spoke about the failure of organized religion running Israel: “The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.” Today, we notice the same problem. It's not only the Vatican, the hierarchy, and the Bishops. It's all of us. We say nice things, but do not follow with our example. Simply, we don't live by the example. And that's why unfaithful people do not feel attracted to the eternal truth. We might not change this situation easily. At least, let's not fall into spiritual pride, and say that we are doing well. By cultivating the virtue of humility, we might start moving forward. Ave Maria! Recent news stories have highlighted how this exception can lead to serious harm for children, and a grey area for clergy.
