In many political traditions a staff or stick is used as a symbol ofpower. We remember Moses who used a staff to show that the power of God was atwork in him, when he was in his mission to lead the people of God to where theLord led them. Kings and presidents of various countries also use staff whichis the symbol of the power they hold. In the Church, the Pope and Bishops havealso staff with the similar meaning. The staff that is made of wood or metal refers to thepower or authority of the person who uses it. Even a stick of wood which isused by father or mother at home is enough to give us understanding that ifchildren violate the rules, they will be subjected to punishment be beaten withthe stick. Seeing what this staff or stick signifies, now we can furtherunderstand why  in the scriptures Godalways reveals His power through the symbolic staff being used by His chosenfigures who had so important duty to do. Today we listen to the Lord who says through theprophecy of Micah in the first reading, that He Himself shepherded His peoplewith His staff. Jesus the good shepherd also carried out the pastoral works byusing the high priest's staff, which until now has been symbolized by the Popeand Bishops. With that staff, the duty as leader and shepherd have itslegitimacy and strength to demand obedience and reliance from people who aresubjected to it. The staff of God has its powerful function in thepurification and deliverance of men and women believers from the power ofdarkness and sin. Satan, the ruler of darkness, when confronted with the powerof God that is symbolized by the staff, he will fall trembling and fear. Thatwas evident in every action of Jesus who was always present through words anddeeds, which instantly frightened the Satan who asked not to be tortured. Thisis the role of to the staff of God, that is to cast all our sins and to bethrown into the sea, says the prophet Micah. So we must look at the staff when it is shown to us insuch manner being held by the person in power, it is made as a support when westand, or when it is used to emphasize on something so important. Jesus referredto all the power that existed in Him, when He spoke that His true disciples andapostles were indeed His mother and His brothers. This statement of Jesussurely contains the teaching that is full with authority. This teaching isabout to carry out God's will which is to be the main task of every follower ofChrist. The staff of Jesus until now is in the hands of the Pope and the Bishopsof the Church. We must listen and follow our Holy Father and our Bishop.Let'spray. In the name of the Father ... O Lord, may our fidelity and obedience tothe Church always be strong and lasting especially through our obedience to theHoly Father and Bishop. Full Text of Readings Tuesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 372 The Saint of the day is Saint John Fisher Saint John Fisher's Story John Fisher is usually associated with Erasmus, Thomas More, and other Renaissance humanists. His life therefore, did not have the external simplicity found in the lives of some saints. Rather, he was a man of learning, associated with the intellectuals and political leaders of his day. He was interested in the contemporary culture and eventually became chancellor at Cambridge. John Fisher had been made a bishop at 35, and one of his interests was raising the standard of preaching in England. Fisher himself was an accomplished preacher and writer. His sermons on the penitential psalms were reprinted seven times before his death. With the coming of Lutheranism, he was drawn into controversy. His eight books against heresy gave him a leading position among European theologians. In 1521, Fisher was asked to study the question of King Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, his brother's widow. He incurred Henry's anger by defending the validity of the king's marriage with Catherine, and later by rejecting Henry's claim to be the supreme head of the Church of England. In an attempt to be rid of him, Henry first had John Fisher accused of not reporting all the “revelations” of the nun of Kent, Elizabeth Barton. In feeble health, Fisher was summoned to take the oath to the new Act of Succession. He and Thomas More refused to do so because the Act presumed the legality of Henry's divorce and his claim to be head of the English Church. They were sent to the Tower of London, where Fisher remained 14 months without trial. Finally both men were sentenced to life imprisonment and loss of goods. When the two were called to further interrogations, they remained silent. On the supposition that he was speaking privately as a priest, Fisher was tricked into declaring again that the king was not supreme head of the church in England. The king, further angered that the pope had made John Fisher a cardinal, had him brought to trial on the charge of high treason. He was condemned and executed, his body left to lie all day on the scaffold and his head hung on London Bridge. More was executed two weeks later. John Fisher's liturgical feast is celebrated on June 22. Reflection Today many questions are raised about Christians' and priests' active involvement in social issues. John Fisher remained faithful to his calling as a priest and bishop. He strongly upheld the teachings of the Church; the very cause of his martyrdom was his loyalty to Rome. He was involved in the cultural enrichment circles as well as in the political struggles of his time. This involvement caused him to question the moral conduct of the leadership of his country. “The Church has the right, indeed the duty, to proclaim justice on the social, national and international level, and to denounce instances of injustice, when the fundamental rights of man and his very salvation demand it” (Justice in the World, 1971 Synod of Bishops).Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
