Should the fastest always win the race? That was the question IEX founder Brad Katsuyama found himself asking when he realized high frequency traders were manipulating the system by using faster connections to profit at the expense of others. Determined to create a fair market for all investors, Brad risked everything to launch his own exchange. When one of the world's largest high frequency trading firms stepped in to try to stop Brad in his tracks, he turned to Hogan Lovells to help in his fight for fairness. He is able to combine his data with interviews with Jack Bogle himself and over 50 people who knew him well, including Warren Buffett, Micheal Lewis, Cathie Wood, Cliff Asness, John Bogle Jr., Brad Katsuyama, Gus Sauter and Jason Zweig. One of Balchunas' big takeaways is the revelation that passive investing and index funds are not to blame for the rise of passive investing, as they would not have been a big deal without Vanguard's structure, in the first place. The Bogle Effect is a biography, analysis, and how-to guide with Balchunas as your tour guide. Through his experiences and insights, Balchunas helps investors and professionals understand the ways that Vanguard and Bogle have impacted the industry.“He commandeered trillions of dollars, and he only made a few million himself. When Brad Katsuyama was working on Wall Street, he saw that the stock exchanges were giving an unfair advantage to high-frequency traders that was costing his clients - pension funds, mutual funds and hedge funds. Worse still, the exchanges were making huge profits from selling this advantage. His response was to create the Investors Exchange, a stock exchange founded on the premise that people want to trade on a fair platform that doesn't provide advantages to predatory traders. In this episode of the Georgian Impact Podcast, Jon and Brad discuss how Brad broke the mold to create an exchange that is founded on building trust between all participants.   You'll hear about: How unfairness in high-frequency trading led to the founding of IEX How exchanges work and how they are incentivized How IEX has built a different type of exchange based on trust Why trust is opening doors to new revenue streams   Who is Brad Katsuyama? Brad Katsuyama is the CEO and co-founder of the IEX, the Investors Exchange. He co-founded IEX to create a fairer stock exchange. Katsuyama is the focus of Flash Boys, a Michael Lewis book about high-frequency trading. Before founding IEX, he was the Global Head of Electronic Sales and Trading at the Royal Bank of Canada. There he was responsible for electronic sales, electronic trading, algorithmic trading, market structure strategy, client implementation and product management. Wall Street is an industry mired in tradition and regulations. It has been a crucial part of America’s economy since its inception in 1792, less than 20 years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. So how do you change an entire system that has spent hundreds of years defining its values? For Brad Katsuyama, CEO of the Investors Exchange (IEX), the solution was simple; build an entirely new system. IEX was created in 2012 by Brad and his co-founders to serve as an alternative to the existing stock exchanges like NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange. The goal of IEX was simple, to level a playing field that has been rigged for over 200 years to favor a few privileged power brokers. In this interview, Brad and Chad discuss how IEX is using new technologies to help investors and what they’re doing to make investing and the stock exchanges fair and straightforward for everyone, not just the elite. Brad Katsuyama never considered himself a maverick, or entrepreneur. He had a cushy job at the Royal Bank of Canada, but he became alarmed the more he learned about high frequency trading, where computers can trade a bunch of stocks in a fraction of a second. He felt so strongly that it was harming the market that he left to create his own exchange – the Investor’s Exchange – where this type of trading is prohibited. Investors can trade stocks from other exchanges on IEX, with the idea that it’s a level playing field. As CEO, Katsuyama has become the face of IEX, and became the face of the bestselling book "Flash Boys," by Michael Lewis.

Imagine you are heading to the shops and someone steals your shopping list. Then they race ahead and bought all the goods ahead of you, forcing you to buy your shopping from them at a higher price. That is what is happening to ordinary share traders like pension funds. When they go to buy some shares, they find high frequency traders have snapped them up nanoseconds before them and want to sell them at a higher price. These traders now account for the majority of all trades on major stock markets. David Grossman explores the rights and wrongs of this new world with Brad Katsuyama, CEO of IEX, a new stock exchange which wants to clamp down on high frequency traders, and Professor Donald MacKenzie of the University of Edinburgh.

My guest this week is Brad Katsuyama, the founder of the IEX exchange and protagonist of Michael Lewis’s famous book Flash Boys, which chronicled the role of high frequency trading in markets. This conversation was yet another reminder of how complicated markets can be, and that very few participants know all aspects of the process well. Brad and I get deep into the history behind his company, and the ways in which markets and exchanges have evolved, better or worse.  One of my favorite parts of this conversation was our exploration of entrepreneurship. Brad’s whole story is one that entrepreneurs will appreciate, and is full of lessons for those aspiring to start their own business. For this episode, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Dan Aisen—one of the co-founders of IEX, and one of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Finance (2015). Dan got his start at RBC where he developed their flagship execution algorithm, THOR. This was also where he met and worked under Brad Katsuyama—one of the other co-founders and CEO of IEX, who was heavily profiled in Flash Boys. As many of you may already know, IEX is an Alternative Trading System (ATS), or more commonly referred to as a dark pool. However, they’re currently in the midst of filing for exchange status. During our talk, I asked Dan more about the projects he worked on at RBC, how IEX went from nothing more than an idea to an operating trading venue, and why they’re on a quest to make markets “fair”. We also discuss the “speed bumps” which have been implemented at IEX, the mechanics of dark pools, and general chat about the broader market structure.
