Since we recently learned about Stock Lending, Short Selling, P/E Ratio, and Stock Valuation in the last 2 episodes, we figured it's a good time to revisit our episode on Dark Pools, PFOF, Order Routing, and Market Makers (not to be confused with Market MakeHERS

There are so many different ways to buy and sell securities in your brokerage account. In this episode, we'll go over many of the different order types you may see in your brokerage account when you go to buy or sell a stock, or any securities. What does Bid and Ask mean? What is Stop and Limit Order? What are market orders? How many different Order Types are there and what is the difference? This is your ‘set it and forget it” overview of order types for trading securities through your brokerage firm. Remember These Things: Take taxable events into account (capital gains, losses, selling before holding for 1 year, etc.) Don't try to time the market. This is education, not advice.
Finally, short squeeze and gamma squeeze make sense! (Did you know gamma squeeze was a thing?) Also, Roaring Kitty is out of hiding, remember that whole GameStop stonks thing that happened? Well apparently it's happening again with another memestock (super high risk, y'all). We also learn about hedge funds, meme stocks, market makers and the roles played in making money off shorting stocks (or squeezing out the shorters). Check out our episode on Dark Pools for more background. We also very briefly discuss Options! Hedge funds are regulated and here's the link we mentioned for that: https://www.sec.gov/files/ib_hedgefunds.pdf The Takeaway: Shorting a stock is super risky. You're gambling on the failure of a company, essentially, and this tends to happen in hedge funds. A short squeeze is an event that happens when the people who are shorting stock shares have to cover the cost of the shorted stock because now the price is going up due to unforeseen demand (people suddenly buying it) and getting squeezed out of that position. It's like we always say, investing involves risk. ;) Still Have More Questions or a Comment?

Scott Patterson is the author of the New York Times best-selling book The Quants and Dark Pools and a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal, where has written about hedge funds, high-speed trading, Warren Buffett, the global mining industry, the Jan. 6, 2021 investigation, and climate change. A winner of the Loeb Breaking News Award, Scott has made frequent appearances in the media, including on CNBC, The Daily Show, and Fresh Air. His work has also appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone and Mother Earth News. He has a masters of arts degree from James Madison University. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and son. Today, we focus on his newest book Chaos Kings: How Wall Street Traders Make Billions in the New Age of Crisis. It is a fascinating deep dive into the world of billion-dollar traders and high-stakes crisis predictors who strive to turn extreme events into financial windfalls. Today, 1. Scott shared the genesis of his book "Chaos Kings: How Wall Street Traders Make Billions in the New Age of Crisis," and introduced some of the fascinating characters that readers can get to know. 2. We talked about the increasing focus on chaos, crisis, and market crashes, with Scott highlighting some of the most distressing financial moments of the past 30-40 years and how the individuals in his book profited from them. 3. Scott shed light on a unique aspect of options as explained by Nassim Taleb, one of his book's main characters: their non-linearity. He likened this to fire insurance that triples in value if your home burns down, illustrating how outsized profits can be made during times of chaos. 4. We delved into the concepts of 'Black Swans' and 'Dragon Kings' that feature in his book. 5. We discussed how traditional risk metrics like Value at Risk (VaR), often fail during crisis situations. Scott explained the belief that past events do not accurately predict future correlations during extreme circumstances. 6. We then shifted gears and Scott shared his thoughts about the interconnectedness of financial markets, climate change, and long-term, generational risk. 7. In a lighter moment, Scott spoke about the high number of his characters who ride fast cars or motorcycles, jokingly questioning if there's a hidden correlation worth noting. 8. Last, but not least, we talk about value investing, and Warren Buffett who Scott has covered as a reporter for many years. https://scottpattersonbooks.com/ --- Crisis Investing: 100 Essays - My new book. Discussion with Stefanie Kammerman "The Stock Whisperer" about "Dark Pools" hidden trades that move the market. Stefanie Kammerman has devoted the past 26 years to studying the Dark Pool market phenomenon. She cut her teeth trading for Schonfeld Securities, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious proprietary trading firms. The firm staked traders with capital, supplied them with cutting-edge technology and information, and shared trading profits with them. In her first year, the executives named her “Rookie of the Year”… and she eventually acquired the nickname “Trading Goddess.” After leaving full-time trading to start a family, Stefanie began making a Wall Street-size income trading from home. Now that the kids are grown, she trades full time while publishing her analysis of the Dark Pools and the short-term trading opportunities they create. Thanks to their analysis of the Dark Pools, she and her fellow traders had insight into when and where large trades — virtual tidal waves of capital — were poised to enter the market and move prices. Stefanie is also the author of the book Dark Pool Secrets. These days, she trades from her own account and publishes her commentary from a beautiful condo off the Las Vegas strip. Stock market manipulation is something that can be hard to trace, but it happens on a daily basis. Most regular investors do not know what goes on behind the scenes when they execute their orders. Your trades are being manipulated and you don't even know about this. That's why we'll delve into six different methods: dark pools, payment for order flow, high frequency trading, spoofing, quote stuffing, pump and dump, and insider trading (bonus).Subscribe to my YouTube channelSupport the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/GiovanniRigters)

LISTENER QUESTIONS Question from Chickenluvr - Do you know if there is anyway you can tell if positions are being opened or closed intra day? Live options open interest? Question from Meravol - What are your thoughts about selling strangles at the 1std dev levels of a particular stock? Sort of like a bollinger band strangle? Thoughts on this technique? Is it me or are there new techniques for selling strangles all the time that always tend to blow out? Aren't you better off selling IC or IB due to limited risk? Question from S Warz - Can you trade options through dark pools? Question from Mr Petty - What is the sweet spot when buying options when it comes to time decay. I don't want weeklies but I also don't want to spend a fortune for a two-year option? Comment from Tenasur - Ally is smart having a show on this network. It puts them ahead of a lot of brokers that are still figuring out their content strategy. Maybe one day Ally will pick up the rest of it and make it the Ally Options Insider Radio Network. That would be pretty sweet for ally clients to have access to this stuff 24/7. Although the rest of Mark's listeners might be a little angry.

The 5% understand controlling the order flow is a complete waste of energy and effort, and it’s mentally draining too. The 95%, in contrast, have not yet figured out that anything can happen at any time and that controlling the process is impossible, like trying to hold back the tide.

Stock Whisperer Stephanie Kammerman on dark pool execution. There are many ways to make money in the markets. Listen to this episode with Stephanie Kammerman on Dark Pool execution - an aspect of the markets you may never have considered. Hear how the big money moves their orders and how you can benefit. Plus hear Louise Bedford on the importance of scheduling. THE POWER OF SCHEDULING – Louise Bedford Your calendar shows what you value in life. If you are not scheduling your priorities into your calendar you are limiting yourself and stopping yourself from moving into the next level. Start with a huge dream, find something that you value, then break it down into tiny steps and put those into your calendar. Your calendar is your accountability buddy. Without an effective calendar routine you will never live the life you deserve. Stephanie Kammerman Stephanie learned from the best traders on Wall Street. Fresh out from college she sat in the million-dollar room and learnt Dark Pool execution on the glowing green Internet machine. She became known as the Stock Whisperer. In the trading room people thought she had a crystal ball and could see into the markets. She wasn’t psychic … she was following the dark pools. What are Dark Pools? In the old days it was called the Upstairs Room. Years ago the dark pools weren’t accessible but thanks to the Internet and the right software they are now visible. 40% of the total volume across the market is done in the dark pool. Loopholes in the dark pools allow traders to see where the money is being moved by the big firms and to follow suit. For example if Goldman Sachs has 20 million shares to sell they don’t have to show that order until it has been entirely filled. How else are you going to sell 100 million shares without moving the market down? If Goldman Sachs does a trade from their London desk to the New York trading desk they do not have to report this trade for 24 hours. Dark Pools traders can get in before the order is filled. Stephanie has software where she can see these huge trades and she teaches people how to read the tape to follow these pools.
