Welcome to The Chopping Block – where crypto insiders Haseeb Qureshi, Tom Schmidt, Tarun Chitra, and Robert Leshner chop it up about the latest in crypto. This week, we're joined by Vlad, the leverage legend behind Lighter, a zk-powered DEX taking aim at Hyperliquid in the rising CLOB wars. We unpack the new Token Transparency Framework from Blockworks and whether self-regulation can fix crypto's disclosure problem. Should VC wallets be public? Are market-making deals legally risky? And why do most projects still say nothing? Plus: Vlad explains how Lighter uses zero-knowledge proofs to enforce fairness and fight toxic flow—without harming retail. And Circle's stock goes full meme mode, TikTok retail piles in, and Robert reveals he's short. Is crypto finally growing up—or just evolving its chaos? Show highlights

Look for platforms with strong educational tools that explain the “why” behind each decision. Is it easy to use, or just easy to look at? A clean interface is great, but it should also save you time and help you take action.Do I prefer to manage money on my phone? If mobile is your main device, the app experience really matters. What kinds of investments do I want access to? Beyond stocks and ETFs, consider if you'll want funds, bonds, or retirement accounts like a Roth IRA.How much research do I need to feel confident? If you like digging into details, look for screeners, data, and expert insights. How much money am I starting with? If it's a smaller amount, fractional investing will help you buy into big-name stocks without needing big money. How involved do I want to be? Since we recently learned about Stock Lending, Short Selling, P/E Ratio, and Stock Valuation in the last 2 episodes, we figured it's a good time to revisit our episode on Dark Pools, PFOF, Order Routing, and Market Makers (not to be confused with Market MakeHERS

There are so many different ways to buy and sell securities in your brokerage account. In this episode, we'll go over many of the different order types you may see in your brokerage account when you go to buy or sell a stock, or any securities. What does Bid and Ask mean? What is Stop and Limit Order? What are market orders? How many different Order Types are there and what is the difference? This is your ‘set it and forget it” overview of order types for trading securities through your brokerage firm. Remember These Things: Take taxable events into account (capital gains, losses, selling before holding for 1 year, etc.) Don't try to time the market. This is education, not advice.
Finally, short squeeze and gamma squeeze make sense! (Did you know gamma squeeze was a thing?) Also, Roaring Kitty is out of hiding, remember that whole GameStop stonks thing that happened? Well apparently it's happening again with another memestock (super high risk, y'all). We also learn about hedge funds, meme stocks, market makers and the roles played in making money off shorting stocks (or squeezing out the shorters). Check out our episode on Dark Pools for more background. We also very briefly discuss Options! Hedge funds are regulated and here's the link we mentioned for that: https://www.sec.gov/files/ib_hedgefunds.pdf The Takeaway: Shorting a stock is super risky. You're gambling on the failure of a company, essentially, and this tends to happen in hedge funds. A short squeeze is an event that happens when the people who are shorting stock shares have to cover the cost of the shorted stock because now the price is going up due to unforeseen demand (people suddenly buying it) and getting squeezed out of that position. It's like we always say, investing involves risk. ;) Still Have More Questions or a Comment?

Scott Patterson is the author of the New York Times best-selling book The Quants and Dark Pools and a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal, where has written about hedge funds, high-speed trading, Warren Buffett, the global mining industry, the Jan. 6, 2021 investigation, and climate change. A winner of the Loeb Breaking News Award, Scott has made frequent appearances in the media, including on CNBC, The Daily Show, and Fresh Air. His work has also appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone and Mother Earth News. He has a masters of arts degree from James Madison University. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife and son. Today, we focus on his newest book Chaos Kings: How Wall Street Traders Make Billions in the New Age of Crisis. It is a fascinating deep dive into the world of billion-dollar traders and high-stakes crisis predictors who strive to turn extreme events into financial windfalls. Today, 1. Scott shared the genesis of his book "Chaos Kings: How Wall Street Traders Make Billions in the New Age of Crisis," and introduced some of the fascinating characters that readers can get to know. 2. We talked about the increasing focus on chaos, crisis, and market crashes, with Scott highlighting some of the most distressing financial moments of the past 30-40 years and how the individuals in his book profited from them. 3. Scott shed light on a unique aspect of options as explained by Nassim Taleb, one of his book's main characters: their non-linearity. He likened this to fire insurance that triples in value if your home burns down, illustrating how outsized profits can be made during times of chaos. 4. We delved into the concepts of 'Black Swans' and 'Dragon Kings' that feature in his book. 5. We discussed how traditional risk metrics like Value at Risk (VaR), often fail during crisis situations. Scott explained the belief that past events do not accurately predict future correlations during extreme circumstances. 6. We then shifted gears and Scott shared his thoughts about the interconnectedness of financial markets, climate change, and long-term, generational risk. 7. In a lighter moment, Scott spoke about the high number of his characters who ride fast cars or motorcycles, jokingly questioning if there's a hidden correlation worth noting. 8. Last, but not least, we talk about value investing, and Warren Buffett who Scott has covered as a reporter for many years. https://scottpattersonbooks.com/ --- Crisis Investing: 100 Essays - My new book. LISTENER QUESTIONS Question from Chickenluvr - Do you know if there is anyway you can tell if positions are being opened or closed intra day? Live options open interest? Question from Meravol - What are your thoughts about selling strangles at the 1std dev levels of a particular stock? Sort of like a bollinger band strangle? Thoughts on this technique? Is it me or are there new techniques for selling strangles all the time that always tend to blow out? Aren't you better off selling IC or IB due to limited risk? Question from S Warz - Can you trade options through dark pools? Question from Mr Petty - What is the sweet spot when buying options when it comes to time decay. I don't want weeklies but I also don't want to spend a fortune for a two-year option? Comment from Tenasur - Ally is smart having a show on this network. It puts them ahead of a lot of brokers that are still figuring out their content strategy. Maybe one day Ally will pick up the rest of it and make it the Ally Options Insider Radio Network. That would be pretty sweet for ally clients to have access to this stuff 24/7. Although the rest of Mark's listeners might be a little angry.
Jason Hartman is joined by author, Scott Patterson to discuss high frequency trading, of which roughly 70 percent is driven by computers. Scott says the firms using artificial intelligence for high-speed trading make it nearly impossible for the little guy to compete in the markets. According to his book, Dark Pools, these robot systems trade in milliseconds. High frequency firms flood the market with buy and sell orders, effectively clogging up the system and posing a threat to other firms. While this electronic exchange made the system more effective, one has to wonder if this trading style hasn't become detrimental to the markets overall when trading successfully is defined by milliseconds. Scott coined the term “A.I. Bandits” to describe electronic high frequency trading. Scott also discusses the history of quant strategies based on his book, The Quants, a mathematical scientific approach to outsmarting Wall Street, which led to the recent financial crash. He calls the quant system “a classic tale of hubris.” Scott Patterson is author of The Quants and his new release, Dark Pools, and is currently a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, where he covers financial regulation from Washington, D.C. He has also written for the New York Times, Rolling Stone and Mother Earth News. He has a Masters of Arts degree from James Madison University. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia.

CFTC signals retreat over "source code" repository The US futures regulator has signaled a willingness to back down on controversial proposals allowing it to freely access the source code of high-speed traders, following complaints that it could lead to sensitive intellectual property being revealed.
Hot Topics in Tech: What do you need to know about financial technology? A technical glitch postponed the start of trading in futures and options contracts on Eurex by more than two hours, the latest in a run of breakdowns by exchanges. Exchanges around the world are avidly wooing high-frequency traders, those controversial speed demons of Wall Street. Despite the often explosive debate over this kind of trading in the U.S., bourses in Mexico, Turkey, South Africa and beyond are trying to lure HFT types to boost business. China, perhaps the last big obstacle to high-frequency trading achieving global dominance, where tight government rules, a stamp duty on stock trades and market inefficiency have so far kept out the algobots. High frequency share trading, which favors “predatory strategies that queue jump institutional and retail investors”, is having a toxic effect on Australia financial markets, according to researchers at the Business School. Question from TJD: I know you guys were joking when you talked about HFT boats and blimps. But has there been any serious application of drone tech in the trading world? I have seen them used for combat, photography, movie-making, science experiments and more. Why not trading?

Comment from Mr. Tor - Any chance of an exchange CTO roundtable on the show? Would be great to get the lay of the land, so to speak, from an exchange respective. Maybe brokers and prop firms as well?
