Don and Tom question whether the investment industry—and increasingly Vanguard—keeps creating new products simply to stay relevant rather than solve real investor problems. They critique Vanguard's new Target Retirement Lifetime Income Fund, which combines a target-date fund with an annuity, arguing that it sacrifices liquidity, introduces inflation risk, and obscures costs. They also take aim at Vanguard's new Active/Passive Model Portfolio Series, suggesting it adds unnecessary complexity and market-timing assumptions to what should be a straightforward indexing approach. Listener questions cover the risks of holding 72% of retirement assets in an ESOP and whether a military family should replace a simple Schwab index-fund portfolio for their two-year-old daughter with AVGE. The episode closes with a plug for The Line Uncrossed and a discussion of the real-life Civil War experiences that inspired the novel.0:12 Do investors really need new products and new ideas?2:11 Vanguard's Target Retirement Lifetime Income Fund and annuities in target-date funds4:29 Liquidity, inflation risk, and the tradeoffs of guaranteed retirement income7:44 Why immediate annuities often take years just to return your own principal9:16 Morningstar's skepticism of guaranteed-income retirement products10:46 Vanguard's new Dynamic Active Passive Model Portfolio Series12:42 Are active/passive hybrid portfolios solving a real problem?13:38 Has Vanguard lost its indexing compass?15:30 New Talking Real Money website features and submitting listener questions16:12 ESOP question: 72% of retirement assets tied to employer stock17:59 The dangers of concentrated company-stock positions21:29 Understanding ESOP returns versus traditional investments24:09 Why diversification matters more than past ESOP performance26:49 Using GI Bill benefits, a 529 plan, and a UTMA to fund a child's future28:27 AVGE versus a simple total-market index portfolio for a young child29:42 Why simplicity may be good enough for long-term investing success30:35 Discussion of The Line Uncrossed and its Civil War inspiration31:41 John B. W inwestowaniu dostajesz to, za co nie płacisz. To właśnie ono należało do zapalników pasywnej rewolucji. Serdecznie zapraszam was na rozmowę z nim, szczególnie jeśli inwestujecie w fundusze aktywnie zarządzane.

Michael Green, Chief Strategist and Portfolio Manager for Simplify Asset Management, joins Julia La Roche on episode 366 to break down what he calls the most important and overlooked structural shift in financial history — the rise of passive investing. Green argues that the market isn't broken in the way most people think: it's not fraud or irrational exuberance, it's the mechanical consequence of a regulatory change in 2006 that turned 401k contributions into an automatic, valuation-blind buying machine. With passive now at 55% of the market — and rising 4% per year — Green shares new research showing that somewhere between 65% and 80%, a 1987-style crash stops being a possibility and becomes nearly inevitable. He also connects the dots between our retirement system, the housing crisis, and why both boomers and millennials are scared — just for completely different reasons.Links:Follow Mike on X: https://twitter.com/profplum99Read Mike's Substack: https://www.yesigiveafig.com/Visit Simplify: https://www.simplify.us/Timestamps00:00 Intro and welcome Mike Green1:04 - What "broken markets" actually means today 2:40 - The Costanza market and how Mike's research began 6:21 - Passive went from 2% to 55% of the market since 1992 7:05 - Why passive investing is just momentum with no valuation filter 9:45 - The 2006 Pension Protection Act — the legislation nobody talks about 10:13 - Why Vanguard and Bogle aren't the ones to blame 10:19 - The book: The Greatest Story Ever Sold 10:39 - The academic paper that forced Mike to rewrite the book 13:59 - Type A vs Type B savers — and the snow cone moment 14:35 - Prices don't move because of information. James, Rocco and Darragha are back after a beautiful Friday night at Elland Road as Leeds United beat Burnley 3-1 to move up to 14th and on to 43 points - the kind of total that's never seen a Premier League side relegated. Anton Stach opened the scoring with a stunning left-footed strike from outside the box (his fourth goal from range this season), Dominic Calvert-Lewin's outrageous back-heel set up Noah Okafor for a glorious Bogle assist, and DCL bundled in his 13th of the season to put the game beyond Mike Jackson's interim Burnley side. We break down the perfect Stach goal in slow motion, debate whether Calvert-Lewin is now Rocco's favourite striker since Tony Yeboah, and reflect on the form run since the Manchester City defeat - 12 points from 21, including the win at Old Trafford and the Wembley FA Cup semi-final alongside it. There's full appreciation of Daniel Farke's elite-level Premier League management, a debate about the referee, and a look at how Leeds have quietly become one of the best-organised sides in the league. Then it's on to Tottenham away on Monday 11th May, with the small matter of Spurs being in the relegation zone, on their third manager of the season under Roberto De Zerbi, and missing roughly half their squad to injury (Simons, Solanke, Kudus, Odobert, Kulusevski, Romero, Vicario, Maddison and more). Plus: the man who lost his watch in the stand, Michael Jackson on the tannoy at full-time, Dara's surprise summer transfer pick to bring back to Elland Road, and why this Leeds squad genuinely wants to be here. 00:00 Welcome and Bass & Bligh 02:07 Reaction to a beautiful night at Elland Road 06:27 Stach's stunning opener 10:19 DCL's back-heel and Okafor's finish 15:11 Calvert-Lewin appreciation 19:14 The third goal and Farke's "43 points" line 23:23 The watch, Michael Jackson and a full moon 27:01 Struijk's error and the referee debate 30:37 Spurs preview: the injury apocalypse 34:05 Summer ahead and Farke is elite 39:24 Dara's curveball: bring Rutter back 42:11 Final thoughts and sign-off

At 82 years old, I still work. Not because I have to, but because I want to.I joined Brian Herriot and Kirby Denison on “The Time Freedom Podcast” to talk about exactly that. But we ended up covering a lot more than I expected. Here's something that might surprise you: I managed money for thousands of people over 30 years and built a firm to $1.6 billion under management. And I have never once managed my own money. Why? Because I know myself too well. When the market drops, I would second-guess everything. I'd probably hesitate to put more money in, even though that's exactly what I teach people to do. So I let someone else handle it. I don't even check how I did last year.We also got into my disagreement with John Bogle. I had the privilege of sitting with him for about 90 minutes earlier in my career. Bogle preached Enough and it's even the title of one of his books.I respectfully disagree. I believe the goal should be more than enough. Because life gets in the way. Bad things happen. And they often happen during retirement, when you have the least ability to recover. If you stop working the moment you have just enough, you're one bad year away from trouble.

In this special 400th episode, the Rational Reminder hosts reflect on 50 years of index investing and the profound impact it has had on financial markets, investor behavior, and the cost of investing. The episode features a panel moderated by Ben Felix at the New York Stock Exchange—hosted by Vanguard and S&P Dow Jones Indices—bringing together leading voices in the indexing world to explore how passive investing evolved and what it means for the future of capital markets. Ben is joined on the panel by Tim Edwards (S&P Dow Jones Indices), Jim Rowley (Vanguard), and Shelly Antoniewicz (Investment Company Institute) to discuss the mechanics of indexing, the myths surrounding passive investing, and the evidence on how index funds affect markets. They unpack questions about market concentration, price discovery, and whether indexing is changing the structure of capital markets. (0:32:48) Evidence suggesting index funds have not increased large-cap concentration in markets. (0:34:25) Passive funds represent only about 1–2% of daily trading activity. (0:36:16) Dispersion in stock returns remains high, meaning opportunities for active management still exist. Millions of households using them primarily for retirement savings. (0:45:22) How advisors and institutions use ETFs to build diversified long-term portfolios. (0:46:19) The surprising role of ETFs in trading and market liquidity. (0:48:30) The proliferation of niche ETFs raises questions about whether indexing has strayed from Bogle's vision. (0:49:49) Academic research offers conflicting views on indexing's effect on market efficiency. (0:52:27) Evidence suggests index fund growth has not increased market volatility. (0:54:25) Dispersion data shows indexing does not eliminate opportunities for stock picking. (0:57:15) Index funds own only about 30% of the U.S. stock market, leaving the majority in active hands. (0:59:42) Historical perspective: high market concentration has occurred before and eventually declined. (1:02:14) Research remains inconclusive about whether indexing harms markets. In this powerful message, we're reminded that spiritual drift rarely happens all at once - it happens slowly, through small, subtle choices. We unpack how the double-edged sword of discipline and the calibration of community keep us in alignment with God's purposes, and how a simple one-degree adjustment can reposition our lives for everything He has promised.

I keep hearing how the industry has to change, how Gen Z is aren't drinking wine, how the trade is slow to do anything....until you speak with Abby Bogle. She is the type of enthusiasm and drive that is needed to move with the times. You have all heard me say that "time will tell" and that "all generations come around to the proper glass of wine." What Abby is doing is making the proper glass of wine more accessible.  Be careful, she is a bit infectious. Abby Bogle is not your average disruptor—she's bottling up tradition, cracking open innovation, and pouring new life into the wine industry one mini-bottle at a time. You'll discover how Abby moved from the heart of Texas wine country to leading a revolution in single-serve wine formats that could change how generations experience wine. This conversation uncorks why classic 750ml bottles are struggling to captivate younger drinkers and what it will take for wine to rival the convenience of seltzers and cocktails. Abby reveals the secrets behind fractionalization—how her company, Small Lot Bottles, transforms wines into TSA-friendly miniatures for education, gifting, and direct-to-consumer sales. You'll learn why canned wines fizzled, why PET plastic just doesn't cut it, and how glass keeps wine's integrity intact. The discussion dives into the technical challenges of bottling, shelf life, and the sophisticated use of Coravin's argon technology to preserve taste and tradition. Paul and Abby muse on the frustrations of shipping wine, navigating legal hurdles, and why Gen Z consumers might grab a can of hard seltzer before ever considering a can of wine. As the conversation flows, you'll gain a behind-the-scenes look at how wineries are adapting, how industry innovators like Paul Mabray are influencing change, and why experience matters more than size. You'll come away understanding how the wine world is responding to declining sales, changing demographics, and the demand for something different—plus, you'll hear about Texas' own pioneering vineyards and what it means for the future. If you're wondering where wine is headed, pull up a glass—this episode will give you more than just a taste of tomorrow's wine culture.     Small Lot Bottles Abby Bogle is owner and CEO of Small Lot Bottles. On January 1st, 1963, the bodies of Dr. Gilbert Bogle and Margaret Chandler were found on the banks of the Lane Cove River in Sydney, Australia. The “Bogle-Chandler Mystery” became infamous due to the circumstances in which the bodies were found and because the cause of death could not be established. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the Bogle-Chandler mystery. Affairs, open marriages, an unidentified third person, and the way the two deceased individuals were found made this a very salacious case. The mystery lies in the fact that the medical examiner couldn't say for sure how the couple died, although he did rule their deaths unnatural. All of this had led to a multitude of theories over the years, with one seemingly gaining more traction than the rest. You can help support the show at patreon.com/truecrimeallthetimeVisit the show's website at truecrimeallthetime.com for contact, merchandise, and donation informationAn Emash Digital productionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
