This week's guest is Silversun Pickups singer, guitarist and founding member Brian Aubert. Since starting the project with then-roommate Nikki Monninger more than 20 years ago, Aubert and his band have released five acclaimed albums, including the Gold-selling 2006 debut, Carnavas. Along the way, Silversun Pickups saw 10 of its songs land in the top 20 of the Billboard charts, they've played shows to adoring fans throughout the world and they've shared the stage with some of music's biggest names. Aubert has come quite a long way since he was a kid performing to his stuffed animals in his "fake Duran Duran lip-sync band." A few hours before last weekend's Silversun Pickups concert at The Rave, Aubert spoke to My First Band host Tyler Maas about what it's like being back on the road, the experience of stopping an early 2020 tour on account of the pandemic, the band's unassuming start and unexpected rise to worldwide notoriety, and all the projects that came before. Over the course of the conversation, Aubert talked about taking guitar class in first grade, briefly playing bass in a post-punk project and once opening for Elliott Smith. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering, Lakefront Brewery, and Music Go Round Greenfield. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. The occasion was the release of Widow’s Weeds, the new album by Silversun Pickups that Vig produced. Their convo takes in the nitty gritty of writing, recording, doing press, and touring. To that end, we hear about: a German journalist being a bit too honest; Butch’s psychic connection with his crack engineer; Brian’s reason for having lots of guests in studio; advice on how to keep your band together for the long haul; and so much more. Brian from Silversun Pickups joins us on his song creation process, getting used to playing acoustically & insane drumming before #CRNVL...
Brian Aubert, lead singer and guitarist for the Silversun Pickups, is a hugely talented guy. He’s also a sweetheart and a smart-ass and blast to hang out with. And Christy feels lucky that they had a chance to do just that on the latest A La Carte episode, since he and the band have been super busy with their new album, “Widow’s Weeds.” They discuss growing up in the same part of the San Fernando Valley in the 1980s, the movies and bands that shaped him, how he got his start playing music and how this hobby turned into a career. They also spend a good amount of time talking about sobriety, since they both stopped drinking last year. This one gets a little heavy but it’s mostly a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy.
Southern California natives Brian Aubert and Nikki Monninger front Silversun Pickups, one of rock music's leading bastions of guitar glory. The band just recently released their sixth studio album, Physical Thrills, produced by the legendary Butch Vig of Garbage (who were highlight on July's episode of The Story Behind the Song). The LP is marked by an adventurous -- and intentional -- departure of sorts, a tone brilliantly set by the lead single, “Scared Together."But the path to this latest record starts back in 2006 with the band's first studio album, Carnavas, and its breakout track "Lazy Eye." The song has become something of a rock and roll staple over the last 15 years, making it a perfect topic for this latest episode of The Story Behind the Song. The pair also dive into "Scared Together" -- which was a perfect fit for the interview, as they called in from the road while staying in a hotel known to be haunted. It is a frequently playful, funny and lazy eye-opening interview of an extremely passionate and talented band that is still grateful and humble after all these years.Listen the the latest episode of The Story Behind the Song now, and then make sure to like, review, and subscribe to the show wherever you get your podcasts.
