On today's episode, we're continuing our series breaking down the six types of joyful outisders that God uses to impact culture. Scott Crosley, the founder and President of Pivot, an organization that rescues women and children from sexual slavery, joins us to provide one such example. In this inspirational interview, Scott explains the process of exposing hidden brothels and rescuing trafficked women and children around the world. He explains how the victims end up in these situations and what he's observed as some of the core drivers behind human trafficking. But where did he get his desire to do this? How does he cope with all he sees? Is his ministry really solving the root of the problem? Listen now! Are you a protester too? Narrating her memoir, Sloane Crosley delivers ironic humor that balances the horror of back-to-back traumas. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss the bite that Crosley brings to her memoir. Admitting the unlikelihood and disorientation of what happened, Crosley links the vulnerability she felt at a burgled apartment and, a month later, at the suicide of her boss and friend, Russell Perrault. Crosley's wit and sometimes witlessness are as reconcilable and relatable as her raw reactions and wishful imaginings. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Have you ever lost something or someone dear to you? Though it ranges in severity and impact, loss is a shared human experience – an inevitable, inescapable part of life. Praised for her humor and sharp wit, essayist and novelist Sloane Crosley delivers her first memoir Grief is for People, exploring how loss can take many forms. After the pain and confusion of losing her closest friend Russell to suicide – which occurred only a month after also losing prized possessions and her sense of safety following a burglary – Crosley looks for answers, even where they may be elusive. She seeks solace not only in those close to her but in art and philosophy as well, hoping for a useful framework outside the oft-cited five stages of grief. Crosley's readership may not have seen this side of the author, but will nevertheless recognize those observations and examinations of the human condition interlaced with levity that popularized her earlier writings. Grief Is for People seeks to upend the traditional grief memoir and offer both consolation and challenge to standard conceptions of mourning. Crosley's talk is for anyone in a current time of sorrow or who has experienced a loss and might welcome a discussion beyond platitudes. Sloane Crosley is the author of the novels Cult Classic and The Clasp and three essay collections: Look Alive Out There and the New York Times bestsellers I Was Told There'd Be Cake and How Did You Get This Number. Benjamin Gibbard is a multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and guitarist. He is the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of Death Cab for Cutie, formed in 1997, and one half of the electronic duo The Postal Service. Gibbard released his debut solo album “Former Lives” in 2012, and he has scored two films. Gibbard is an avid ultra-marathon runner and a longtime resident of Seattle. It's never a great idea to pigeonhole a talented writer, but you could probably call Sloane Crosley a humorist... most of the time. Her newest, Grief Is for People, is a funny, raw, introspective, and beautiful look at grief from every angle. Rocked by the suicide of her best friend, Crosley dives into her pain and loss in this slim, but effecting book that will make you laugh out loud while you reach for your tissue box. (Yes, a cliche. But, here, a true one.) We also speak with McLean and Eakin books in Petoskey Michigan, run by a husband and wife team who fell in love in the shop they now own. "David Crosley was a traveling evangelist and pastor whose life seems oddly reflective of the Biblical character, Samson in several ways. First, Crosley was reputed to be one of the largest men in the county of Lancashire, England, weighing for many years, it was thought, about 300 pounds. Second, his life though full of godly accomplishments was stained by serious sin. And third, his best-known sermon was a comparison of Samson with Christ." Strategic growth is about more than just growth for growth's sake. It's about identifying the most efficient path for profitability and sustainability and then pursuing it. Our guest today, Gale Crosley, is a Strategic Growth and Innovation Consultant who has helped countless growth-oriented CPA and Accounting firms overcome barriers and achieve high-performing strategic growth. Crosley started her career as a CPA with Arthur Andersen before transitioning to technology sales. After the dot-com bust, she started her own growth consultancy to help CPA firms grow strategically. We discuss strategic growth within the CPA and broader professional services profession, including what firms can learn from traditional corporate enterprises and how technological innovations like AI are changing the industry. Gale explains that strategic growth is not just top-line growth but also about the bottom line. It's not growth for growth's sake; rather, it's about growing profitability. She also breaks down the biggest impediments to strategic growth, like unprecedented staffing shortages and adapting to revenue cycles. Finally, Gale notes that firms must shift their strategy as the market changes. Firms need to specialize and innovate to stay relevant. Gale believes private equity and technology are disrupters to the CPA profession that will accelerate the need to evolve current business strategies. Gale advises managing partners to focus on strategic growth and specialization instead of riding the rollercoaster of market conditions. By being forward-thinking and focusing on strategic growth, firms can achieve the most profit and the fastest growth.Key Points From This Episode: Get to know Gale, her deep experience, and her work as a Strategic Growth Consultant. Why she pivoted from accounting early in her career. How she partners with CPA firms to transform them into high-growth environments. The concept of strategic growth and how it is accomplished. How strategic growth is the most profitable and fastest growth and why it is not growth for growth's sake. Broadening geographic reach and its impact on opportunity and competition. An overview of the unprecedented disruption within the CPA profession and how private equity is changing the landscape so radically. Why strategic growth is the movement from an individual contribution, book of business, tactical generalist to a leader-driven and strategic specialist. The impediments to strategic growth that Gale has observed. What firms should be doing with increased revenue levels to optimize for strategic growth. How leadership and organizational structure can foster (or impede) strategic growth. The differences between what drives corporate America, private equity firms, and CPA firms.Combining the best parts of corporate America with the best parts of the CPA profession.Advice for firms on approaching industry changes and the role of private equity.Gale's predictions for what the industry will look like in ten years.Gale CrosleyGale Crosley on LinkedInConnection BuildersAlex Drost LinkedIn
