This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with Erin Osmon, an award-winning, Los Angeles-based music journalist, critic, and author. She's written long-form album notes for archival releases on Blondie, Hüsker Dü, Townes Van Zandt, Sparklehorse, and many others. A veteran of Chicago newsrooms, her work appears in Rolling Stone, LA Times, New York Times, Washington Post, and other publications of record. She is part-time faculty at USC's Annenberg School of journalism. Her new book, about heartland rock in the 1980s, will be published by W.W. Norton in 2026. Her first book, Jason Molina: Riding with the Ghost — the focus of this episode — was published in 2017 and named a Best Music Book of the year by Pitchfork. Her book about John Prine's landmark debut album was published by Bloomsbury's 33 1/3 series. In Jason Molina: Riding with the Ghost, Erin presents a detailed, human account of the Rust Belt–born musician Jason Molina — a visionary, prolific, and at times cantankerous singer-songwriter with an autodidactic style that captivated his devoted fans. It details Molina's personal trials and triumphs and reveals for the first time the true story of his last months and works. Offering unfettered access to the mind and artistry of Molina through exclusive interviews with family, friends, and collaborators, the book also explores the Midwest music underground and the development of Bloomington, Indiana–based label Secretly Canadian. As the first authorized and detailed account of this prolific songwriter and self-mythologizer, Riding with the Ghost provides readers with unparalleled insight into Molina's tormented life and the fascinating Midwest musical underground that birthed him. In this episode host Michael Shields and Erin Osmon discuss how Molina's deep ties and affinity to the state that birthed him (Ohio) shaped his life and influenced his career. They explore Molina's surprising and varied musical influences, the comparison to singer-songwriter Will Oldham which shadowed Molina throughout his career, the birth of the timeless classic album that is Magnolia Electric Co., and so much more. This week we're tying up some loose ends by discussing Bird Machine, the presumed final album by Sparklehorse. Shortly before his death in 2010, Mark Linkous recorded the foundation for these tracks with Steve Albini. Since then, Matt and Melissa Linkous took the tracks and completed them, giving them a proper release. While Mike and Alex generally weren't huge fans of Sparklehorse's records, no one can deny how moving this album is. In this episode of **Beat Motel**, Andrew Culture and Ollie dive headfirst into the treacherous waters of cover songs. From Blur's awkward moments to Jimi Hendrix being untouchable, the duo debates which bands and tracks are simply too sacred, complex, or ridiculous to cover. Along the way, they drop truth bombs about Madonna's infamous coffee table book, dissect Damon Albarn's lounge act origins for "Song 2," and explain why American men are just _built different_. Hear tales of function band virtuosity, the chaotic logistics of covering Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and the unspeakable madness of Frank Zappa's rock operas. Plus, you'll discover why Sparklehorse feels like reading someone else's mail and why trying to recreate Emperor's riffs live might just cause a nervous breakdown. Also, Ollie tries to guess some classic tracks and... fails gloriously. Think you can do better? Tune in for riffs, banter, and one of the most hilariously unstructured episodes yet. ### Riffs of the week #### Oli's Riff - Bedhead - Golden Brown (0:00-0:30) #### Andrew's Riff - Gatecreeper - Dead Star (3:12 - 3:41) ### Oli's track choices 1. “Merry Christmas, Emily” David Lowery does so many things, his CV needs a sequel. He's a professor, a mathematician, a writer, a musician, a producer and an entrepreneur. He's also the singer of two of my all-time favorite bands: Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven. Let's start with the former. Lowery formed Camper Van Beethoven when he was a student at UC Santa Cruz in the early '80s. I was so obsessed with Camper Van when I was in high school I cut class to buy their new album--but I had the wrong day, so I cut class the next day to get it. Totally worth it, by the way. Camper Van Beethoven put out a handful of genius albums likeOur Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart and Telephone Free Landslide Victory before temporarily disbanding in 1990. Lowery didn't miss a beat and formed Cracker with guitarist Johnny Hickman and they put out a handful of genius albums like Kerosene Hat and The Golden Age, logged a #1 Modern Rock track with "Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now)" and scored three platinum albums. This is only a partial history, by the way; but I would recommend reading up on both bands because they have fascinating histories.Lowery has produced everyone from Counting Crows to Sparklehorse, founded Sound of Music studios, was a seed investor in Reverb.com (), knocked out his PhD and was named a Global IP Champion by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. A ferocious advocate for artist's rights, among other things, Lowery launched a pair of class actions alleging major streaming services had failed to properly license and account to independent songwriters. Lowery currently teaches the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia. An authentic career-spanning collection that boasts re-recordings, demos, b-sides and live takes that have never been heard, ‘Alternative History: A Cracker Retrospective' is out now. It's a deep and privileged dive into the rich and vast Cracker cataloge and to say it's a treat falls short of the mark. It's a musical treasure chest. Cracker are touring now and will be on the road at the beginning of 2025 and Camper Van will be playing dates as well. www.crackersoul.com Www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com IG: @Emberspodcast editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

When James O'Barr poured the pain and anguish of a personal tragedy into the drawings that comprise The Crow, his intensely cathartic story of Eric—who returns from the dead to avenge his and his fiancée's murder at the hands of a street gang—resonated with readers around the world. Now, the illustrated tale that became the “thrilling” (Los Angeles Daily News) and “spectacular” (Chicago Tribune) screen triumph is re-released in an expanded version the author originally intended, complete at last with: —Thirty pages of never-before-seen artwork, including a new closing segment, “Sparklehorse,” and the touching new scene, “An August Noel” —A new Introduction by James O'Barr —Lost sequences restored using the artist's original technique This is The Crow like you've never seen it before—the powerful journey of an avenging angel and a celebration of true love...as fierce, intelligent, and unforgettable as when it was first conceived. 1967: How I Got There and Why I Never Left (Akashic Books, 2024) explores how that pivotal slice of time tastes to a bright, obsessive-compulsive boy who is shipped off to a hothouse academic boarding school as he reaches the age of thirteen--just as Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited starts to bite, and the Beatles's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band explodes. When he arrives in January 1966, Robyn Hitchcock is still a boy pining for the comforts of home and his family's loving au pair, Teresa. By December 1967, he's mutated into a 6'2? tall rabid Bob Dylan fan, whose two ambitions in life are to get really high and fly to Nashville. In between--as the hippie revolution blossoms in the world outside--Hitchcock adjusts to the hierarchical, homoerotic world of Winchester, threading a path through teachers with arrested development, some oafish peers, and a sullen old maid--a very English freak show. On the way he befriends a cadre of bat-winged teenage prodigies and meets their local guru, the young Brian Eno. At the end of 1967, all the ingredients are in place that will make Robyn Hitchcock a songwriter for life. But then again, does 1967 ever really end? Robyn Hitchcock is a rock 'n' roll surrealist. Born in London in 1953, he describes his songs as "pictures you can listen to." 1967: How I Got There and Why I Never Left (Akashic Books, 2024) explores how that pivotal slice of time tastes to a bright, obsessive-compulsive boy who is shipped off to a hothouse academic boarding school as he reaches the age of thirteen--just as Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited starts to bite, and the Beatles's Sgt. Born in London in 1953, he describes his songs as "pictures you can listen to." Hitchcock has floated at a tangent to the mainstream for nearly five decades, and his songs have been performed by R.E.M., the Replacements, Neko Case, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Lou Barlow, Grant-Lee Phillips, Sparklehorse, and Suzanne Vega with the Grateful Dead, among others. Hosted by Sal CataldiGuest: Robyn HitchcockRobyn Hitchcock is one of the true eccentrics of British music, a songwriter who has revealed the beauty in the absurdity of life for five decades. He first rose to fame with the influential art-rockers the Soft Boys in the mid-‘70s before going solo in the early ‘80s producing over two dozen acclaimed albums including Elements of Light (1981), Ole Tarantula (2006) and Storefront Hitchcock (2000), the soundtrack to a down-n-dirty concert film by Jonathan Demme. His songs have been covered by artists including R.E.M, Sparklehorse and Suzanne Vega. He has also saluted his chief songwriting inspirations, Bob Dylan and Syd Barrett, by covering their work on tribute albums and tours. Robyn will be joining us to discuss his new memoir, 1967: How I Got There and Why I Never Left. My print review of the book can be found here at PopMatters.com. "Reading is Funktamental" is a monthly one-hour show about great books written about music and music-makers. In each episode, host Sal Cataldi speaks to the authors of some of the best reads about rock, jazz, punk, world, experimental music, and much more. From time to time, the host and authors will be joined by notable musicians, writers, and artists who are die-hard fans of the subject matter covered. Expect lively conversation and a playlist of great music to go with it. "Reading Is Funktamental" can be heard the second Wednesday of every month from 10 – 11 AM on Wave Farm: WGXC 90.7 FM and online at wavefarm.org.Sal Cataldi is a musician and writer based in Saugerties. He is best known for his work with his genre-leaping solo project, Spaghetti Eastern Music, and is also a member of the ambient guitar duo, Guitars A Go Go, the poetry and music duo, Vapor Vespers, and the quartet, Spaceheater. His writing on music, books and film has been featured in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, PopMatters, Seattle Times, Huffington Post, Inside+Out Upstate NY, and NYSMusic.com, where he is the book reviewer.

Anamoe Drive is the solo project of Thumper frontman and guitarist Oisín Leahy Furlong. He released his debut album Breakfast in Bed via Faction Records on March 8 and talks through it track by track on this episode of the TPOE podcast. Oisin says Breakfast in Bed is a breakup album told in three parts. The non-linear narrative flits between the throes of heartbreak to the bliss of new love, from the depths of loneliness, to the slow dissipating of these feelings in the rearview mirror. The album's title reflects different meanings depending on which song you view it through - from a kind gesture, to a lonely act, to the masticating of these themes in solitude. It also doubles as the place where most of these songs were written - perched on a bed, the morning after the night before, recapping these events in song. He says influences range from Sparklehorse to The Microphones, Bright Eyes to The Beach Boys, and Big Thief to Real Estate. Buy Breakfast in Bed: https://anamoedrive.bandcamp.com/ Tracklisting 1. This episode originally aired on October 19, 2023. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two women who lead fierce, fantastic rock bands: Karly Hartzman and Marisa Dabice. Hartzman is the driving force behind the band Wednesday, which started as a solo-ish vehicle for her songs back in 2017 but has blossomed into a full band with an already-sizable catalog. Everything they've done is worth checking out, but it sure feels like Wednesday hit exactly what they'd always been striving for on the album Rat Saw God, which came out earlier this year. Hartzman's lyrics are both pointed and poetic—amazing in their specificity and delivered with some serious passion, whether in a country-ish moment, or one that feels almost metal. Today's other guest, Marisa Dabice, thinks Wednesday sounds like Black Sabbath meets Sparklehorse, which is both accurate and something that's probably never been said about any band before. Check out “Bull Believer” from Rat Saw God. Marisa Dabice is the voice behind Mannequin Pussy, a band that's been releasing blistering music since 2010. Just this week, Mannequin Pussy announced the release of their long-awaited fourth album, I Got Heaven, which will come out in March of 2024. Hartzman, as you'll hear in this conversation, has already gotten a listen to the record—which was produced with John Congleton—and she loves it. The title track is already getting rave reviews for taking Mannequin Pussy's intense punk energy and adding a bit of sweetness with some synths and a sugary chorus, but those aspects almost make it sound even more confrontational in a way. In any case, it's awesome: Check out “I Got Heaven” right here. In this chat, these two friends talk about touring, and specifically about how unusual it can feel to perform—and how that can lead to actual tears on stage, not the most fun experience. They chat about the difference between Mannequin Pussy and Wednesday fans, and about the pressure to enjoy your success while it's happening. Oh, and about saunas. You've gotta love a sauna. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Maria Dabice and Karly Hartzman for chatting. For the first episode of 2024 we're going back almost 30 years to 1995 to completely ignore britpop and talk about much, much better music that was happening at the same time. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - At The Gates, Bjork, Cathedral, Clutch, Dubstar, Faith No More, Fear Factory, Foo Fighters, Fugazi, Garbage, Green Day, Emmylou Harris, The Jayhawks, Low, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Smog, Spacehog, Sparklehorse, Strapping Young Lad, Matthew Sweet, Teenage Fanclub, Therapy?, Tindersticks, Whale, White Zombie, The Wildhearts, & Yo La Tengo. This episode is dedicated to the memory of the legendary music journalist and bloody lovely bloke Neil Kulkarni who sadly and suddenly passed away last week. You may know Neil from the Chart Music Podcast, from his writing for Melody Maker, Kerrang, Vox, The Quietus, Plan B, Metal Hammer, DJ Mag & more, or you may have heard him when he guested on Colin & Ian's other podcast Free With This Months Issue in August last year. He is also a musician under the name Kash Mojo. In this episode, we go on a journey to find out why Evan decided to become a lawyer, and why he chose to practice in New Mexico. Along the way, we discuss journalism, his stint working for NPR (National Public Radio), and some of his law influences. Then we get into his musical side. I ask him why he chose the stage name of Kash Mojo, and what it means. Then we chat about his musical style and dub it "Ghost Rock"; which is a genre we both just made up! We talk about his musical influences, including Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous, and Evan even lets me play his new cover of 'Cow' by Sparklehorse. Look for Kash Mojo's new album 'Buried or Replaced' to drop midway through 2024. Finally, we end the show talking about how he got into listening to podcasts, and what some of his favorites are. They chat about the difference between Mannequin Pussy and Wednesday fans, and about the pressure to enjoy your success while it's happening. Oh, and about saunas. You've gotta love a sauna. Enjoy. The end of every quarter is a time to take a little look back at the last three months of new music. Tonight I present a little over two hours of the records that caught my attention during that period. There are returning legends (Graham Parker, Lucinda Williams, The Pretenders) who are sort of shockingly as great as ever. There are workhorses (Guided By Voices, The William Loveday Intention) that seem to have new tunes in every quarterly recap. There’s an archive project that is clearly a label of love for the family of Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkhouse. And, of course, there are sets devoted to our friends at Big Stir Records and Rum Bar Records, along with a nice heaping of new bands (or new to me, at least) that caught my attention.  As for the “52 Weeks Of Teenage Kicks”, I have a fun live version that I recently found on Bandcamp. Guitarist Davey Lane is in the current lineup of Australian greats You Am I, and he apparently got the gig after recording and touring with You Am I leader Tim Rogers in the late 90’s. Since it is the third quarter recap, I’m also giving another spin […]

Sparklehorse - "Evening Star Supercharger” from the 2023 album Bird Machine on ANTI- Today's Song of the Day is a bittersweet one: the track comes from the posthumous Sparklehorse album Bird Machine, recorded by singer/songwriter Mark Linkous in 2009, but unreleased following his death by suicide in 2010.  The release was lovingly spearheaded by Mark's brother and his sister-in-law Melissa. “It's the hardest decision I've ever made,” Matt says in a press release. “It's difficult making a choice about someone else's art, even if you've known them all your life and worked with them, even if they were your brother and best friend. We had long conversations about not wanting to take this into a different direction. We wanted to bring out what was there.” “Mark communicated these songs," Melissa adds. “We just did our best to transmit them.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

--- Redactie: Nina Ramkisoen, Geerte Verduijn, Maartje Willems Eindredactie: Bram Vollaers

The NFL season is upon us, and Steven and Ian are marking the occasion by launching their first ever Fall Albums Fantasy Draft. Here's how it works — they each pick five albums that are coming out this fall with the object of accumulating the highest overall Metacritic score. In this scenario, Olivia Rodrigo is like Patrick Mahomes and Taylor Swift is like Justin Jefferson. Does that make sense? No? It will when you listen! (36:34)Before that, Steven gives a recap of his weekend in Dayton for the 40th anniversary Guided By Voices shows (4:16). Was the line for the men's bathroom a disaster? Of course it was! Also, the guys delve into the online dust-up between Jeff Rosenstock and Steve Albini — and the Canadian punk band Propagandhi (?) — over music venues that take a portion of artists' merch sales. Finally, they pay tribute to the recently fallen icons Jimmy Buffett and Steve Harwell of Smash Mouth. In Recommendation Corner (1:03:30) Ian talks up a new posthumous album from Sparklehorse while Steven recommends the latest power-pop gem from Cory Hanson.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.
