My guest today is Shirley Manson. Since 1994, she's been the lead singer of the band Garbage, and she is a bona fide rock icon. The two of us worked together on a different podcast called The Jump, which Shirley hosted and I helped produce. It was a dream of mine to get Shirley as the host of that podcast, partly because, as you're about to hear, she has one of the greatest voices, and I could listen to her talk about anything. And so I'm especially excited to listen to her today tell me about a song that changed her life. Thanks to Sonos for their support of the podcast. Check out sonos.com.For more, visit songexploder.net/keychange.And check out the Song Exploder episode with Garbage from 2014, featuring Shirley and her bandmate Butch Vig talking about how they made their song “Felt.”
This week, we lace up our Doc Martins and hike over to the Pacific Northwest to the home of GRUNGE! We discuss bands outside the usual suspects of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam. Your hosts fondly remember this time, as we were young adults when the Seattle scene invaded all US rock n' roll avenues. In retrospect, this sounds like less of a movement and more of a melting pot of many of the genres that had been established in silos during the 70s and 80s. Don't think you like grunge? Then check this out! This episode features songs from bands outside the big 4 of grunge, but we don't think you'll be totally surprised. Many of these groups had similarities with the producers that were chosen, namely, Jack Endino. A perfect amalgam of punk, classic rock, and metal is right in Captain Content and Kevin's wheelhouse. As usual, we have a lot of fun reminiscing about this unique time in rock history. Jump on the hike with us to grab a Starbucks, and don't forget your flannel!Songs this week include:Green River – “Swallow My Pride” from Dry As A Bone / Rehab Doll (1987)The Nymphs – “Death Of A Scenester” from Nymphs (1991)Dig – “I'll Stay High” from Dig (1993)Mammoth Volume – “Matador” from Noara Dance (2000)Tripping Daisy – “Rocketpop” from I Am An Elastic Firecracker (1995)Coffin Break – “So Long To Reality” from Thirteen (1992)Smash Atoms – “Into The Light” from Smash Atoms (2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store
In early 1990, Nirvana were ready to start working on their second album. Their label Sub Pop recommended a producer named Butch Vig, who had produced heavier underground bands like Laughing Hyenas and Killdozer. They met up with Butch at his Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin to begin recording, laying down eight tracks before they had to head out on tour for six weeks. When they returned home, they made the difficult decision to fire their drummer Chad Channing. Around the same time, Kurt and Krist were thinking of leaving Sub Pop, as the label was facing some financial trouble. When it came up that Sub Pop had begun talking to major labels about some kind of deal, Kurt and Krist felt they might be better off just signing directly to a major label. While in L.A. for label meetings they caught a gig by a punk band called Scream. Kurt and Krist were impressed with their drummer Dave Grohl and they kept in touch. When Scream broke up, not long after, they called up Dave to fly out to Seattle and jam with them. Within two minutes of playing, they knew Nirvana had found their new drummer. Gary Gersh at Geffen Records was one of the record executives looking to sign Nirvana. He had seen them play in New York with Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, who Gersh had signed to the label. Thanks to their encouragement, Geffen signed Nirvana to a deal on April 30, 1991. Nirvana managed to convince their new label that Butch Vig was still the best producer for the next album, and with a budget of $65,000, they headed to Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California to make it. This is the story of lead single Smells Like Teen Spirit, with newly unearthed audio from the band! Written by Cam Lindsay for iHeartRadio Canada.

Freedy Johnston is a singer-songwriter whose storytelling and melodies strike deep chords. From the heartlands of Kinsley, Kansas, Johnston's works resonate with tales of heartbreak, alienation, and disappointment. His 1992 album, Can You Fly, won praise from none other than The New York Times, hailed as one of the finest of the year. Then came 1994's This Perfect World, produced by Butch Vig, spawning the hit "Bad Reputation" and earning Johnston the title of Rolling Stone's "songwriter of the year."Johnston's latest album, Back on the Road to You, featured collaborations with Aimee Mann, Susanna Hoffs, and Susan Cowsill, once again affirming his mastery in crafting soulful and unforgettable songs.Yet, there's more to Freedy Johnston than his music. His dedication extends to Joey's Song, a non-profit that raises awareness and funds for epilepsy research. Founded in memory of Mike Gomoll's son, Joey's Song unites musicians to support this critical cause. Johnston's heartfelt contributions underscore his commitment to wielding music as a force for good.Appleton based musician/animator/historian Frank Anderson acted as our special guest co-host for the interview. A pocas semanas de la gira de Sudamerica de Garbage traemos este episodio cuenta la historia de formación de Garbage y como sus disco debut irrumpió con fuerza en la escena Rock y alternativa del mundo.
The 1991 debut album Gish by The Smashing Pumpkins marked the band's entry into the alternative rock scene with a unique mix of psychedelic rock, heavy metal, and dream pop elements. Produced by Butch Vig, who would later work with Nirvana on Nevermind, the album showcases the band's early experimentation with layered guitars, intricate rhythms, raw energy, and dense sonic textures that would become hallmarks of the Pumpkins sound. Although Gish did not initially achieve mainstream success, it garnered a strong underground following, helping to set the stage for the band's breakthrough with Siamese Dream in 1993. Celebrated for its unique blend of intensity and melody, it serves as an early glimpse into the Pumpkins' evolving musical ambitions, complete the fingerprints of Jane's Addiction, Van Halen, and Black Sabbath. This week, Dave Pirner returns to the show to discuss the writing and recording of Soul Asylum's hit 1995 single "Misery." In this insightful conversation, Dave reveals the inspiration behind the song's biting critique of corporate America and the record industry. He shares how the band experimented with recording equipment during this period, enjoying creative freedom without interference from their record label, and how they worked with producer Butch Vig on the album Let Your Dim Light Shine. The discussion also touches on the success of the album, which solidified Soul Asylum's place in 90s rock, and the enduring popularity of "Misery" as a fan favorite that continues to resonate in live performances. L7 were pioneers. Yes, there were all female rock bands before, but how many rocked as hard as they did with as much authenticity? Those four girls let it all hang out and walked it like they talked it. Success had to find them, they weren't going to play any games to find it. They finally broke through with 'Pretend We're Dead" off their third album, but it was hard keeping it all together and the band began to fracture soon after. For the last several years, the original members have reformed for a new album (2019's Scatter the Rats), several "victory lap" tours celebrating their legacy. Donita Sparks joins us this week to discuss the whole story including hanging out with Lemmy, Nick Cave and Butch Vig as well as filming Serial Mom with John Waters, the response to their 2016 documentary, and tons more. Enjoy! www.l7theband.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
Why are they called Eliza & The Delusionals? We find out! ......also their new album is called Make It Feel Like The Garden, we talk about the inspiration behind that, and also that time they met Butch Vig. No biggie.
Text us, and Rock on!What's the story behind the iconic album "Siamese Dream" by The Smashing Pumpkins, and how did the band overcome personal struggles to create a masterpiece? Join us as we unravel the album's production timeline and explore the pivotal roles played by producer Butch Vig, frontman Billy Corgan, and band members James Iha, D'arcy Wretzky, and Jimmy Chamberlin. From the orchestral touches added by Mike Mills, Eric Remschneider, and David Ragsdale, to the intense pressures of recording amid Chamberlin's heroin addiction and Corgan's mental health battles, you'll gain a deeper appreciation of the album's eclectic mix of alt-rock influences and its standout tracks like "Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Disarm."What connects barbershop raga and Seinfeld references to the emotional turbulence in Billy Corgan's music? We dive into eclectic and humorous topics, reflecting on quirky characters and the absurdity of certain cultural phenomena. You'll hear our playful banter as we analyze song lyrics, compare Corgan's work with Rush, and reminisce about the 1994 Lollapalooza concert. In between the laughs and personal anecdotes, we highlight the creative nuances of "Siamese Dream," appreciating its dreamy yet psycho aesthetic and the intricate compositions within.Ever wondered what makes "Silverfuck" a standout track? We energetically dissect the song's chaotic energy, drawing fascinating parallels to Jane's Addiction's raw emotional intensity. Our conversation blends musical critique with light-hearted reflections, including amusing hypothetical scenarios like "Silverfuck" as pre-job interview material. We wrap up on a soothing note with "Luna," a contrast to the rollercoaster of emotions found throughout the album. Stick around as we appreciate the technical prowess behind the band's fast-paced musicianship and share a special track from the "Sesame Sessions" rough mix, leaving you with smiles and gratitude for tuning in.Support the Show.
Eliza and the Delusionals' journey is packed with memorable moments. From the casual banter about food in the Virgin Lounge to the intense recording sessions with Holy Holy, each experience has shaped their musical identity. Oscar's influence pushed them to explore new creative depths, even featuring his dog's breathing sounds on their album. Their recording routine, filled with golden moments and hearty roast dinners, reflects their dedication to crafting authentic music. However, not all experiences were smooth sailing, as Oscar's adamant refusal to host bands again attests. Yet, playing live, whether on tour with The Front Bottoms or Luca Brasi, has been a highlight, even amidst the chaos of rationing chips and unexpected mishaps like getting their bus stuck on the way to Aspen. As they anticipate their upcoming album release and reflect on collaborations with icons like Butch Vig and Bryan from Silver Sun Pick Ups, Eliza and the Delusionals remain grounded by the warmth of the music community. From unforgettable encounters at festivals like Bottlerock to chance (and hilarious) meetings with industry figures like Dicko from Australian Idol, their journey is a testament to perseverance and passion in the ever-evolving world of music. We're getting a massive National Tour and WE cannot wait!!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When understanding how the band came up with the name "Garbage," Butch Vig once wrote in his 1993 studio journal about the creative process; "I hope that all this garbage will become something beautiful," and that's exactly what happened. The perfect storm brought Scotland's Shirley Manson all the way to Madison, Wisconsin to join forces with three musicians to shake things up and create something beautifully their own in the mid 1990s. Siamese Dream Review by Greg Prato While Gish had placed the Smashing Pumpkins on the "most promising artist" list for many, troubles were threatening to break the band apart. Singer/guitarist/leader Billy Corgan was battling a severe case of writer's block and was in a deep state of depression brought on by a relationship in turmoil; drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was addicted to hard drugs; and bassist D'Arcy and guitarist James Iha severed their romantic relationship. The sessions for their sophomore effort, Siamese Dream, were wrought with friction -- Corgan eventually played almost all the instruments himself (except for percussion). Some say strife and tension produces the best music, and it certainly helped make Siamese Dream one of the finest alt-rock albums of all time. Instead of following Nirvana's punk rock route, Siamese Dream went in the opposite direction -- guitar solos galore, layered walls of sound courtesy of the album's producers (Butch Vig and Corgan), extended compositions that bordered on prog rock, plus often reflective and heartfelt lyrics. The four tracks that were selected as singles became alternative radio standards -- the anthems "Cherub Rock," "Today," and "Rocket," plus the symphonic ballad "Disarm" -- but as a whole, Siamese Dream proved to be an incredibly consistent album. Such compositions as the red-hot rockers "Quiet" and "Geek U.S.A." were standouts, as were the epics "Hummer," "Soma," and "Silverfuck," plus the soothing sounds of "Mayonaise," "Spaceboy," and "Luna." After the difficult recording sessions, Corgan stated publicly that if Siamese Dream didn't achieve breakthrough success, he would end the band. He didn't have to worry for long -- the album debuted in the Billboard Top Ten and sold more than four million copies in three years. Siamese Dream stands alongside Nevermind and Superunknown as one of the decade's finest (and most influential) rock albums. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

Ryan Gruss “The Fantasty Football of Music Making” Ryan's journey in the music business began after graduating from The Berklee College of Music in 2000 with a degree in Musical Performance for Drums, and then moving to New York City to begin his "career" in the real world. It was during his second week at Atlantic when Ryan was approached by the HR department, asking if he was interested in becoming Ahmet Erteguns' (the legendary Founder and CEO of Atlantic) assistant. His mind was blown and he instantly accepted the position. In 2010, Ryan launched The Loop Loft and began recording other musicians and treating it like a record label, providing the artists with royalties from the sales of each loop pack. Word began to spread amongst the studio musician community, and a roster of legendary musicians like Omar Hakim, Joey Waronker, Matt Chamberlain began to form and quickly grow. For the next 8 years, Ryan continued to organically build The Loop Loft, adding more artists and content on a weekly basis. Partnerships with companies like Ableton, Native Instruments, BandLab and PreSonus were formed. Guitar Center also began to sell products from The Loop Loft. The company was now the top-selling source for loop and samples, generating millions of dollars of revenue each year. It was a career and a company that Ryan had never dreamed of or anticipated, but he had finally found his musical North Star. Ryan left Native Instruments in 2020 and formed Yurt Rock, literally inside of his Yurt studio in the hills of LA. But with the COVID pandemic grinding studio work to a halt, Ryan decided to take the time and move his family to Nashville, a place that many consider the music capital of the world. It was time for a fresh start. With dozens of the world's top musicians, Yurt Rock has quickly become the ultimate source for producers, engineers and songwriters seeking not only loops and samples, but also custom BATTERY/MASCHINE kits, Ableton Live Packs, Logic Sessions, multitracks and much more. Ten years ago, on a bit of a whim, I invited bassist Will Lee to come over to my home studio in Brooklyn to do an interview with me for a new project I was starting: a podcast. A year or two earlier, my friend Michael Fusco-Straub had turned me on to Marc Maron's WTF podcast, and I was totally hooked on the concept of casual long form interviews among peers. At the time Maron spoke almost exclusively to comics, and I thought there might be a space for something similar but focused on music. Although I didn't have any real experience as a journalist or a broadcaster, I knew I could do it. In fact, maybe more than anything else I've ever done professionally, it was the most natural decision I can ever remember making. But the format was a bit of a mystery. Who was I supposed to be? An expert on music? A friend of my guests? I thought maybe we would perform together. Or maybe they would demonstrate something. Or maybe it would be a document of the local scene in New York - in the early episodes I asked my guests “where are you coming from today” and “where are you going after this”. Actually, those are pretty good questions. Maybe I should go back to asking them again. I spent a month futzing with my Will Lee interview, carefully editing each pause and “um”, working and reworking the introduction. I designed a crude logo based on a Google Earth image of my house in Park Slope, and built a website on Squarespace. I posted the episode and sent an email to my friends to explain the new project. I wrote: Since moving to New York nine years ago, I have tossed around the idea of conducting informal interviews with musicians in my studio when they come in to record. Over the years so many great players and singers have shared tremendous insights and history with me, and it seemed like such a missed opportunity not to record it. Of course, everything changes when the “red light” is on, so the question for me became how to maintain that same level of spontaneity and candor in a somewhat more formal setting. Then I sat nervously with a pit in my stomach, not knowing what I had just done. Would anyone like it? Would anyone care? Was I any good at it? Ten years and 268 episodes later, I continue to refine, to tweak and futz, to agonize and scramble to the finish line every time. As I write these words it is 12:30am, and I sit in my darkened studio - essentially an extension of my bedroom - with my wife, Amanda asleep just a few feet away, and our daughter asleep in the next room. That is to say that The Third Story has become an extension not only of my life, but of my entire household. Fortunately the initial nausea has passed but it has been replaced by a constant sense of urgency to get the next episode finished. I have also developed a style, an unstructured but intentional approach to talking to people, in search of a narrative thread in each journey, an attempt to get somewhere together. Sometimes it's more technical, sometimes it's more esoteric, sometimes it's personal. There is no real theme to the show, and there is no real dogma. If it's interesting to me, the hope is that it will be interesting to others too. The good news about an ongoing show like this one is that there's always another episode to make, so you can never get too precious about any of them because there will be more. The bad news is the same as the good news: no matter how much time you spend on one episode, or how good it was, you still have to make another one, and you're probably already behind schedule. The project has become a way of moving through both space and time for me. It provides a kind of structure when I travel - nearly everywhere I have gone over the last decade, I have returned home with at least one interview. Whether talking to Gabriela Quintero in Mexico, Jorge Drexler in Spain, Madeleine Peyroux in Paris, Butch Vig in Los Angeles, Howard Levy in Chicago, David Garibaldi in Oakland, David Maraniss in Madison, or Jack Stratton in Cleveland, the interviews have provided purpose to my movement through the world. I have traveled specifically to cover jazz festivals like Copenhagen, Newport, Montreal and Umbria, and chronicled my own tours too. I have used the platform to mark the passage of time and significant events along the way. From The 2016 and 2020 Elections to the Covid outbreak, from my 45th birthday to my father's 80th, from the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris to memorializing lost friends like Tommy LiPuma, Clyde Stubblefield, Tim Luntzel or Richie Cole. I have captured both first and final conversations with some remarkable people. I did the first long form interview with Jacob Collier in his house in London in 2014, and the last long form interview with Creed Taylor in his New York apartment 2015. Interviews with Peter Straub, Howard Becker, Clifford Irving, George Wein and Al Schmitt now live on as part of their legacies. While The Third Story has never become what you might call “popular” it has become kind of a cult show. I continue to be astounded when I meet someone who knows the show. It happens more often than I expect, and I have made more than a few real meaningful friendships that way too. When several years ago I was invited to publish my episodes on All About Jazz, I knew I was making credible content. When in 2022 I was asked to partner with WBGO Studios, it was an acknowledgement that I was on the right path, and when we won a Signal Award in 2023 I was further encouraged. By the way, my logo was eventually redesigned by a real graphic designer, Michael Fusco-Straub (the same guy who turned me on to Marc Maron to begin with). Last month, on another whim, I called Will Lee again to see if he would like to meet up for a reunion and to help me celebrate my tenth anniversary. When I first talked to Will for episode one, he was still performing nightly on The Late Show with David Letterman and we talked about his career as one of the most recorded bassists in history, his early education, playing on Letterman, his solo projects… the kind of general overview conversation that has come to loosely define what I do here. This time was more casual and more conversational. We sat on the couch in his Manhattan apartment and traded quips, and I managed to gently extract some new information from him. Then I asked my wife, Amanda, to join me to help process this anniversary in more domestic terms: how does it look and feel to live with someone who is constantly in the process of mining another life story for content and making podcast episodes? What are the similarities between her career as a yoga teacher and mine as a… whatever I am? What do raising a child and producing a podcast have in common? It was extremely entertaining, as is usually the case when Amanda joins me on the show. At the risk of getting too sentimental, I will simply say that making The Third Story is one of the great privileges and joys of my life, I am grateful to all of the extraordinary people who have shared their stories with me, and I am even more grateful to you for listening to it. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios www.leosidran.substack.com

On the 44th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the rock album from the Foo Fighters, "Wasting Light" Wasting Light was the Foo Fighters' 7th studio album. The album was a commercial and critical hit, winning 4 Grammys, including best rock album. The album went platinum and also became the Foo Fighters first album to go #1 on Billboards 200. Led by the biggest rock star in the past 30 years, Dave Grohl on guitar and vocals, the dual guitar players, Pat Smear & Chris Shiflett, bassist Nate Mendel and the lovable late bad ass drummer Taylor Hawkins. The lyrics were credited to the whole band, although Grohl was the main lyricist. The album had 6 singles and basically a music video for every song. The album reconnect the legendary producer Butch Vig of Nirvana's Nevermind fame with Dave Grohl. The band wanted a rawer sound and Dave convinced Vig and the band to record the album in his garage with analog equipment. Grohl wanted this album to define the Foo Fighters and to many he succeeded. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 42 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick So tune in to see if Foo is Poo as Sonny predicted or if Tom was it A Matter Of Time before Tom gets a Rope and drags Sonny Back And Forth under a White Limo! Scott sits with the legendary producer of Nirvana's Nevermind and the Smashing Pumpkin's Siamese Dream as well as the drummer and songwriter of alt rock band Garbage… They get into Butch's upbringing, being surrounded by music at a young age from a mother that was a music teacher. They get into his formative years playing piano and eventually getting into drums up to attending college for film composition and eventually starting Smart studios while playing in early bands like Eclipse and Spooner… They talk about the first Pumpkins record Gish up to Nirvanas Nevermind and the Pumpkins Siamese Dream.. They talk about early memories of Kurt Cobain sending Smells like teen spirit rehearsals to Butch along with driving in Billy Corgan's car listening to the early songwriting process..They get into working with other bands like Sonic Youth and Killdozer early on. They end by discussing Garbage, the tour, the new record and everything in between…
Butch Vig, best known for producing Nirvana's diamond record “Nevermind” or as the drummer for Garbage, is one of the biggest names in the music industry to come from Wisconsin. Having worked with popular bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Killdozer and many more, Butch explains how “happy accidents” during recording sessions have led to some iconic moments in music history. Starting at 15 years old playing in roadside taverns in Viroqua to creating his first record label in Madison, Butch explains how “I can travel around the world but you can't take me out of Wisconsin”. Butch pulls out his guitar mid-interview and plays the first song he ever wrote called “You've Got it Bad” which prompts Charlie to share lyrics from the first song he wrote about his first heartbreak.
