What does it take to run an Empire? Armies and slaves, of course, but also bureaucrats. At its height the Roman Empire employed thousands of men charged with keeping Rome and its provinces fed, watered and content. This was no easy job. A remarkable set of papyrus scrolls reveals the life of Roman Egypt's very own David Brent, preparing for a a visit from the fearsome Emperor Diocletian.Infuriated by hopeless staff and venal local politicians and continuously harassed by his superiors, Apolinarius of Panopolis becomes increasingly desperate as Diocletian approaches and the tension cranks up. Mary Beard follows Apolinarius's story to reveal the messy realities of Roman administration.Producer: Alasdair CrossExpert Contributors: Colin Adams, Liverpool University and Margaret MountfordCast: Apolinarius played by Josh Bryant-JonesSpecial thanks to Jill Unkell and the Chester Beatty collection, Dublin

For this episode we turn our attention to Islam as we talk about celebrations in the holy Islamic calendar such as Eid al-Adha, Eid al-Fitr, and the holy month of Ramadan. I'm joined by Tasneem Filaih to talk about ritual, community, and the best knafeh in Dublin!Sincere thanks to Tasneem for joining me for this episode. I really enjoyed learning about Eid, Ramadan and my favourite subject, food! While Tasneem joined me on this podcast in an independent capacity, I met Tasneem while at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. Chester Beatty is a wonderful museum in Dublin sharing beautiful artefacts and insights into world cultures from across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia; so I'd love to share this link to the Chester Beatty Library and encourage listeners to check out this beautiful and fascinating treasure trove in Dublin. I've always struggled, since I went to art school, with the question of: What is the career of making paintings in the twenty-first century? Of sitting alone in a room and painting in a way people did 500 years ago, in the world of technology and movies and stuff. So I always wanted to make works that are about now, but then show that they're coming out of the history of art and are tied to art history… And to say, look, see how the history of art keeps moving forward, and it's still connected… It's sort of a way to try to prove that painting matters.Sandow Birk is an artist whose works have dealt with contemporary life in its entirety, exploring themes such as inner city violence, graffiti, political issues, travel, war, and prisons, as well as surfing and skateboarding. Some of his work specifically engages with the kinds of “great books” that we explore here at the Spouter-Inn, including an illustrated version of Dante's Divine Comedy, reworked with Marcus Sanders, from 2005, as well as the American Qur'an, published in 2016.Sandow joins us to discuss these two projects and the impulse of reading a centuries-old text and saying: What if this were here and now? What would that look like?SHOW NOTES.Sandow Birk's website includes illustrations from the Divine Comedy, the American Qur'an, and other works we discuss. The Divine Comedy. It's 70 years since one of the world's most exciting and remarkable culture collections was born - not in one of the world's major metropolises, but actually here in Ireland. We're talking about the Chester Beatty Library, on the grounds of Dublin Castle, set up in 1950. It's a fascinating story for several reasons - firstly because of how a single collector managed to assemble such an amazing trove of materials - but also because of how an American mining millionaire ended up settling in Ireland and gifting his treasures to the State. So how exactly did a personal friend of Winston Churchill end up receiving an Irish state funeral after donating such an amazing collection? To discuss further, Donal Fallon joined Gavan Reilly this week for another episode of Hidden Histories. During a study tour in Dublin I had the chance to visit the Chester Beatty Library and have a talk with Tim Keefe – Head of Digital. We talked about using digital solutions to improve access to and experience of the Museum. Tim Keefe is the Head of Digital for the Chester Beatty Museum in Dublin Ireland. This new department is responsible for ongoing digitisation of the museum's collections and their open access dissemination through new web based infrastructure. Tim is also responsible for the development and implementation of the museums long term digital strategy and vision. In addition to this role Tim is the Director of Finance and non-executive board member of the Digital Preservation Coalition, and is an adjunct faculty member in the graduate programme for the school of Information and Communication Studies at University College Dublin. Prior to this position Tim worked as the Head of the Digital Resources and Imaging Services at Trinity College Dublin. This department was dedicated to the development of digital library resources from the university's special collections and archives. Tim also worked as a Research Scientist at the Eastman Kodak Corporation in the Research and Development Division as a member of a new product development and innovation laboratory, as well as in the Kodak Professional Digital Capture Group supporting the development of innovative new professional digital capture products. https://chesterbeatty.ie/

A six-person team from the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM) digitized all the Greek biblical papyri and Greek New Testament manuscripts at the Chester Beatty Library (CBL) during the summer of 2013. The Chester Beatty papyri, published in the 1930s and 1950s, are some of the oldest and most important biblical manuscripts known to exist. The New Testament papyri at the CBL include the oldest manuscript of Paul’s letters (c. 200 CE), the oldest manuscript of Mark’s Gospel and portions of the other Gospels and Acts (third century), and the oldest manuscript of Revelation (third century). The photographs taken by CSNTM reveal some text that has not been seen before.

The Chester Beatty papyri, published in the 1930s and 1950s, are some of the oldest and most important biblical manuscripts known to exist. Housed at the Chester Beatty Library (CBL) in Dublin, they have attracted countless visitors every year. It is safe to say that the only Greek biblical manuscripts that might receive more visitors are Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Alexandrinus, both on display at the British Library. The Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM) sent a six-person team, in a four-week expedition during July–August 2013, and digitized all the Greek biblical papyri at the Chester Beatty Library. The CBL has granted permission to CSNTM to post the images on their website (www.csntm.org). The New Testament papyri at the CBL include the oldest manuscript of Paul’s letters (dated c. AD 200), the oldest manuscript of Mark’s Gospel and portions of the other Gospels and Acts (third century), and the oldest manuscript of Revelation (third century). One or two of the Old Testament papyri are as old as the second century AD. Using state-of-the-art digital equipment, CSNTM photographed each manuscript against white and black backgrounds. The result was stunning. The photographs reveal some text that has not been seen before. Besides the papyri, CSNTM also digitized all of the Greek New Testament manuscripts at the CBL as well as several others, including some early apocryphal texts. The total number of images came to more than 5100.
