Remove From Your Process as Often as You Add To It - Mike CohnCan you imagine being so angry about a team doing something wrong that you institute a rule for them to follow for the next 100 years? Literally 100 years.Queen Victoria was that angry. One day in 1894, the Queen went to the Horse Guards building expecting her Household Cavalry to be ready to escort her back to Buckingham Palace. She instead found the guards either asleep, drunk, or gambling.Infuriated, she commanded that an inspection of the Guards be held at 4:00 p.m. every day for the next 100 years.I'm guessing the Guards got the message to stop sleeping, drinking, and gambling on duty long before 100 years. The 4:00 p.m. inspection could have stopped after perhaps a year or two. Maybe sooner.Things that become part of a team's process sometimes stay there too long, like that inspection of the Queen's Horse Guards. This happened in a company that had a large database that was shared by multiple applications. When one team changed the database, they screwed up the change and left other teams scrambling to quickly change their code in production. They held a multi-team retrospective and agreed that each team would produce a Database Impact Report every sprint. The report would describe how a team's work would affect the database. This doesn't sound horrible yet, except it was rare for most teams to do any work at all in a sprint that would affect the database. These teams were still expected to complete a Database Impact Report each sprint that basically said: No impactNo impactNo impactThese no-impact Impact Reports were emailed to all other teams. After opening a PDF every two weeks that said “no impact,” recipients stopped bothering to even read the reports that were still being generated.Stop. Just stop. These reports were probably useful for a period. They may have helped identify a risk. They certainly made people more aware of the impact a database change could have on other teams. But after a while, they should have been removed from the teams' process, especially once the teams who actually did routinely alter the database had found better ways of communicating potential impacts. In retrospectives, it's always tempting to look for new things to add (“Let's start using AI to inspect our code!”).But make sure you also reserve time in retrospectives to look for things to remove.Unless your team members are all drunk, gambling, or asleep at 4:00 p.m., you can probably find something to remove from your process.A barely sufficient process with unnecessary actions and rules removed will help you succeed with agile How to connect with AgileDad:- [website] https://www.agiledad.com/- [instagram] https://www.instagram.com/agile_coach/- [facebook] https://www.facebook.com/RealAgileDad/- [Linkedin] https://www.linkedin.com/in/leehenson/

Bible Reading: Matthew 5:44-46Roman stomped into the house and headed for the stairs, not even bothering to say hello to his family. "Hey there, Roman!" Dad called from his place at the counter. Roman mumbled something and then proceeded upstairs and slammed his bedroom door. The house shook. Eva, his sister, entered the house a moment later. Mom finished chopping a potato and gave her a hug. "What's wrong with Roman?" Mom asked. Eva opened the fridge and dug out an apple. "Well, this kid named Carson Peters keeps bullying and teasing him," she replied. "Especially on the walk home from school." Later that evening, Roman was asked to help make his mom's famous homemade applesauce. As he chopped apples, he remembered some of the things Carson had said to him on the way home from school. Infuriated, Roman slammed the knife into the apple. The apple squished and splattered all over him and the counter."Oh dear. I suppose that was a rotten apple. I should be more careful when I pick out the bags at the market," Mom said, wiping the gunk off Roman and the surrounding area. "Why did you slam the knife so hard?" she asked. "You could've hurt yourself." "Well, I--I was just thinking about what this guy Carson said to me earlier. He says a lot of mean things." "I think how you're dealing with this is a bit like that rotten apple," Mom said as she mashed up the good apples. "You've been holding all this inside. Allowing angry, bitter feelings like that to stay in your heart can make you rot inside. Eventually, they would've overflowed--or in your case, exploded." Roman sprinkled some cinnamon into the apple mixture. "I guess I thought I could deal with it on my own." "Sometimes the only way to deal with something--or someone--is to ask for help," said Mom. "Jesus loves you so much that He died to save you, and He wants you to go to Him with your problems and hard feelings. He also puts people in your life to help you--like your dad and me. Let us help with the situation, and trust God to help you release those feelings and replace them with His love and peace." –Taylor Carey How About You?Has someone ever been mean to you? Sometimes it's easier to bottle up hard feelings instead of dealing with them. But God wants us to cast our hardships onto Him, and He gives us people to support us. Don't be afraid to ask for help with bullies or other difficult situations and tell a trusted adult how you're feeling. Trust Jesus to comfort you and give you the power to love those who hurt you the way He loves us. Today's Key Verse:Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. Middle age - it’s a phase of life often loaded with stereotypes, but what does it really mean to step into this season as a woman? In this episode, I sit down with the brilliant Jacinta Parsons for a raw and insightful conversation about ageing, feminism, self-awareness, and personal growth. We explore: • How feminism shapes the way we view ageing as women. • The impact of the male gaze and objectification on our self-perception. • The different archetypes of women and how they evolve with age. • The power of self-reflection and awareness in embracing midlife. • Why ageing isn’t just about loss—but about wisdom, strength, and transformation. Whether you’re in the thick of middle age or just thinking ahead, this conversation will challenge the narratives we’ve been sold and inspire you to redefine ageing on your own terms. "A fellow-countryman and friend of St Basil the Great and other great saints of the fourth century, Amphilochius early forsook the bustle of the world and withdrew to a cave where, as a solitary, he lived in asceticism for forty years. The episcopal throne in Iconium then fell empty, and Amphilochius was chosen in a wonderful way and consecrated as Bishop of Iconium. He was a marvellous shepherd and a great defender of the purity of the Orthodox faith, and took part in the Second Ecumenical Council in 381. He fought zealously against Macedonius, and against the Arians and the Eunomians. He personally begged Theodosius the Great to drive the Arians out of every city in the Empire, but the Emperor did not comply with his request. After a few days, Amphilochius came before the Emperor again. When the bishop was taken into the presence-chamber, the Emperor was sitting on his throne with his son Arcadius, whom he had taken as co-Emperor, sitting at his right hand. Entering the room, Amphilochius did reverence to Theodosius, but ignored Arcadius as though he were not there. Infuriated by this, the Emperor Theodosius commanded that Amphilochius be instantly driven from court. The saint then said to the Emperor: 'Do you see, 0 Emperor, how you do not tolerate a slight paid to your son? In the same way, God the Father does not tolerate dishonour paid to His Son, turning with loathing from those who blaspheme against Him, and being angered at that accursed Arian heresy.' Hearing this, the Emperor understood the reason for Amphilochius's seeming disrespect towards his son, and marvelled at his wisdom and daring. Among many other works, Amphilochius wrote several books on the Faith. He entered into rest in 395 in great old age, and went to immortal life." (Prologue)   Saint Amphilocus was a kinsman of St Gregory the Theologian: his father's sister Nonna (August 5) was St Gregory's mother. Amphilocus himself was a lifelong friend of all three of the great Cappadocian Fathers: Sts Basil, Gregory the Theologian and Gregory of Nyssa.

CLR Show 1948. Air Date July 16, 2024. Of late, democrats have been experiencing and all too often eloquently inferring their hopelessness over the apparent normalization of Donald Trump and all things Trumpian to the point where it all sounds like a dry run for a concession speech. That is infuriating. Not once has the attempted assassination of Donald been decried for what it was and is: the latest use of a weapon of mass destruction that should never have been allowed on the streets in the first place, and that is supported by Donald. He is not a hero; he is the latest target of failed republican policies and their callous disregard for the safety of all Americans. The only difference between Donald and the countless others that have been killed by automatic rifles is that he survived the attempt. The bandage he will wear on his ear as a sign of triumph must be converted into a badge of dishonor and willful disdain on the part of a convicted felon. Why is no one else telling it this way? Wake up, democrats!

Perhaps surprisingly, he received a bipartisan round of applause for the declaration. When did Democrats become so radicalized on border security and migration policy? 3:40pm- On Tuesday, Nathan Wade's former divorce lawyer Terrence Bradley testified in a hearing to determine whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified from the Georgia election interference case she brought against former President Donald Trump. According to allegations, Willis engaged in an improper, romantic relationship with the lead prosecutor of the case, Wade—paying him an estimated $650,000 in taxpayer money. Willis is also alleged to have directly derived financial benefit from the relationship with Wade in the form of several extravagant vacations. During a court hearing from earlier this month, Robin Yeartie—a longtime friend of Willis—testified that Willis and Wade had a romantic relationship dating back to 2019. 4:05pm- Jonah E. Bromwich, Ben Protess, and William K. Rashbaum of The New York Times write: “Manhattan prosecutors on Monday asked the judge overseeing their criminal case against Donald J. Trump to prohibit the former president from attacking witnesses or exposing jurors' identities… The gag order in the Manhattan case, if the judge approves it, would bar Mr. Trump from ‘making or directing others to make' statements about witnesses concerning their role in the case. The district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, also asked that Mr. Trump be barred from commenting on prosecutors on the case…The Manhattan criminal case was the first of Mr. Trump's four indictments to be filed and is scheduled to go to trial on March 25. Last year, the district attorney's office accused Mr. Trump of 34 felonies, saying he had orchestrated a cover-up of a potential sex scandal with a porn star that could have hindered his 2016 presidential campaign… Mr. Bragg has cast Mr. Trump's actions as election interference, arguing that the cover-up led to the withholding of important information from voters shortly before they headed to the polls.” Rich notes, who exactly was victimized by these payments? Voters can't truly be considered impacted, as Trump didn't win New York in 2016 or 2020 anyway. You can read the full New York Times' article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/26/nyregion/trump-gag-order-hush-money-trial.html 4:30pm- On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral argument in two cases (Moody v. NetChoice LLC. and NetChoice, LLC v. Paxton) which will determine whether social media companies are permitted to engage in politically based content moderation—or if this amounts to a form of censorship. But shouldn't private companies be permitted to act autonomously without government compulsion? 4:40pm- Adam Liptak of The New York Times writes: “The Supreme Court seemed skeptical on Monday of laws in Florida and Texas that bar major social media companies from making editorial judgments about which messages to allow. The laws were enacted in an effort to shield conservative voices on the sites, but a decision by the court, expected by June, will almost certainly be its most important statement on the scope of the First Amendment in the internet era, with broad political and economic implications. A ruling that tech platforms have no editorial discretion to decide which posts to allow would expose users to a greater variety of viewpoints but almost certainly amplify the ugliest aspects of the digital age, including hate speech and disinformation. Though a ruling in favor of big platforms like Facebook and YouTube appeared likely, the court also seemed poised to return the cases to the lower courts to answer questions about how the laws apply to sites that do not seem to moderate their users' speech in the same way, like Gmail, Venmo, Uber and Etsy.” You can read Liptak's full breakdown here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/26/us/politics/supreme-court-social-media-texas-florida.html 5:00pm- Tracey Tully and Patrick McGeehan of The New York Times write: “A year ago, Gov. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey spoke proudly about his plan to let a corporate business tax expire, framing it as a promise kept in a state striving to compete for entrepreneurs… On Tuesday, Mr. Murphy will propose reversing course and again implementing a corporate business tax of 11.5 percent—the nation's highest rate—for the state's most profitable companies, according to several of his aides. He is expected to present the restoration of the tax as part of a permanent solution to the dire financial condition of New Jersey's statewide transit system during his annual budget address at the State House.” You can read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/27/nyregion/new-jersey-transit-taxes.html?searchResultPosition=1 5:20pm- According to a recent poll from Rasmussen, a whopping 48% of Democrat voters say they would like to see Joe Biden replaced as the party's presidential candidate in 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and former First Lady Michelle Obama were all listed as potential replacements. 5:40pm- Gregg Opelka—Contributor for The Daily Caller (and brother of America's fill-in host Mike Opelka)—joins the The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest article, “Fiddler on the Roof—Brought to You By the Woke State Department.” You can read the full article here: https://dailycaller.com/2024/02/26/tevye-fiddler-on-the-roof-broadway-blinken-pronouns-gender-identity/ 6:05pm- Adam Entous and Michael Schwirtz of The New York Times write: “Now entering the third year of a war that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, the intelligence partnership between Washington and Kyiv is a linchpin of Ukraine's ability to defend itself. The C.I.A. and other American intelligence agencies provide intelligence for targeted missile strikes, track Russian troop movements and help support spy networks… But the partnership is no wartime creation…As the partnership deepened after 2016, the Ukrainians became impatient with what they considered Washington's undue caution, and began staging assassinations and other lethal operations, which violated the terms the White House thought the Ukrainians had agreed to. Infuriated, officials in Washington threatened to cut off support, but they never did.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/25/world/europe/cia-ukraine-intelligence-russia-war.html 6:30pm- In a piece published by The Atlantic, former New York Times opinion editor Adam Rubenstein recalled how he was once reprimanded by NYT human resources for telling co-workers his favorite sandwich was from Chick-fil-A.

Live from Pawnee: A Parks and Recreation Fan Rewatch Podcast

This week Mark and Allen break down the Episode where we first Ben likes women in skates. Like ... A LOT. Reasoning the citizens from Eagleton will likely have Leslie's back in the recall election, since she saved most of their jobs when the towns merged, Councilman Jamm proposes a bill that only allows someone to vote in a Pawnee election if their ID lists an official Pawnee address. Leslie manages to get the bill tabled until after the election, and carries out an early 90's birthday party for Ben at the roller skating rink. However, she finds out Jamm is holding a special session in the council chamber to untable the bill, and vote on it. Despite being dressed in skating gear, she decides to filibuster the session to prevent the vote, knowing she is not allowed to stop at any time or receive help from anyone in attendance. Midway through her filibuster, Leslie begins to tire and falter, but at that moment a crowd of citizens from former Eagleton enter the council chamber to support Leslie's attempt at preserving their voting rights ... and she gets a second wind. Meanwhile, Tom and his new girlfriend Nadia attend Ben's party at the  roller skating  rink. As they continue to bond, Tom desperately tries to impress Nadia as she is leaving for Rwanda in two days with Doctors Without Borders, could be gone a very long time, and Tom hopes she likes him enough to contact him when she gets back to Indiana. As a going away present, Nadia challenges Tom to win her a stuffed bear playing skeeball. However, Ann also takes a liking to the bear, offers cash to buy it, and walks away with Tom's best chance to impress and woo Nadia. Also meanwhile, Ron is also attending Ben's party at the roller skating rink, and notices Donna playing an arcade hunting game. Intrigued, he decides to give it a go. Given his real life experience, he assumes it will be easy. Alas, this is not the case. He finds it is not that simple, and does poorly, something Donna teases him about. Infuriated and at his wits end, he contemplates one way to save face with Donna. He gives up on the game, and takes Donna out to the woods to show her "real" hunting, where certainly his skills and natural ability will shine through. Finally, Andy makes an unexpected surprise return to Pawnee to see April. Seeing as he only has 19 hours to spend with April before he has to go back to London, they decide to make the most of it and attend the birthday party Leslie is throwing for Ben at the roller skating rink. They have a great time, but finally it is time for Andy to go back. He gets in a taxi and says goodbye ... but then April catches Andy stopping the taxi down the street, getting out, and jumping into a dumpster instead. As always, we tackle the tough questions, such as ... Will the Eagletonians prove to be a help or a hindrance to Leslie? Will Tom confront Ann about stealing Nadia's potential bear? Why did Andy jump into the dumpster? Will Ron regain some pride by showing Donna some real hunting? Does Councilman Jamm have any other dirty tricks up his sleeve? Does Ann have any advice for Tom about how to make things work with Nadia? Is Andy having problems with his job in London? Does Ron still want to go back and show that arcade game who's boss? Can Leslie manage to successfully filibuster through the entire evening? Can Nadia have a memorable night with Tom, even without the bear? Can April give Andy any advice to make him feel better? Loyal podcast viewers, tune in to see the 2nd filibuster episode. Can it top Patton Oswalt's first one from a few episodes back? Tune in to find out! Earlier this month, Israeli forces captured the head of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) in the West Bank city of Jenin after he had been involved in planning a number of terrorist attacks. Infuriated, PIJ threatened to fire anti-tank weapons at Israeli towns from its home base in Gaza. In response, the IDF struck PIJ's chief of operations in the northern Gaza Strip and killed his counterpart in the south. After that, the Iranian-backed terrorist group began bombarding Israel with rockets and mortars, firing nearly 1,000 rockets, of which nearly 200 fell short and landed in Gaza itself—causing the deaths of several civilians there. An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire took effect after about three days of fighting. To talk about the weekend war, we've invited analyst Jonathan Schanzer, who pays close attention to Gaza and writes about Middle East politics in Commentary and Mosaic, as well as in several books. (One just last year, Gaza Conflict 2021, carefully analyzed the previous blowup there). Here, Schanzer, in conversation with Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver, looks at this month's conflict in that political context, explains how it was like and unlike past rounds of conflict, thinks about how its timing relates to the current nuclear negotiations with Iran, and speculates about the future of Hamas in Gaza. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

Saint of the Day
Our Holy Father Amphilocus, Bishop of Iconium (395)

Saint of the Day
