March is Epilepsy Queensland’s annual fundraising and awareness month. CEO of Epilepsy Queensland, Sandi Rodiger, told Gary Hardgrave on 4BC Drive, "Epilepsy affects far more people than what is probably known. We say roughly 1 in 25 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime, and that's roughly about 270,000 people in Australia currently living with epilepsy and around 40 odd thousand in Queensland, so it is very prevalent." Mum of a young athlete who has epilepsy, Natalie Sandow added, "Aamira did not allow epilepsy to stand in her way at all." "Once she got the clearance, she just went full force on that sporting field. She has, focal seizures, so she has awareness when she has seizures and is quite capable to play her sports because of that," Ms Sandow continued. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I was delighted to have the opportunity to sit down with Anne Midgette and Greg Sandow together. Both are influential thinkers and leaders in the world of music, each boasting remarkable careers. Anne served as the music critic for The Washington Post for 12 years, following her tenure at The New York Times. She has co-authored two captivating but distinctly different books: My Nine Lives: A Memoir of Many Careers in Music with Leon Fleisher, and The King and I: The Uncensored Tale of Luciano Pavarotti with Herbert Breslin. Currently, she is working on an exciting new project—a book about Nanette Streicher, the innovative woman who built pianos for Beethoven.Greg Sandow has an equally impressive background, having taught at Juilliard for 25 years and currently teaching at the Peabody Conservatory. His courses at Juilliard included "How to Talk About Music" and "Classical Music in an Age of Pop." Greg has written for a range of prestigious publications, such as The Village Voice, The New York Times Book Review, Opera News, and The Wall Street Journal. Notably, he was the first music critic for Entertainment Weekly and spent three years as the chief pop critic for The Los Angeles Herald Examiner. And here's an interesting detail—Anne Midgette and Greg Sandow are married! In Part 1, we begin by exploring how Anne and Greg first met. From there, the conversation shifts to pop music with Greg offering his unique perspective, including why he believes Taylor Swift holds such significant cultural importance. This leads us into a thoughtful discussion on the relationship between art and commerce. A substantial segment of this part of the interview is devoted to their insights on how orchestras, opera companies, and musicians have evolved over the years and what orchestras can do to build and engage their audiences effectively.[Subscriber Content] In Part 2, we delve into the demanding schedules of successful conductors and musicians, touching on how the greatest artists need space and time to mature their interpretations. Following that, Anne and Greg share their individual writing habits, providing a glimpse into their creative processes. We conclude our conversation by examining revealing differences in how classical music is critiqued compared to pop and rock music.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? Launch and learnIn our third in a series of pods recorded live at NeoCon 2024, Andrew and Bobby actually don't outnumber the guest as they're joined by both Annie Ming of HBF and Cosmo Kramer of Bitreel to talk about how visualization technology is helping HBF re-imagine how to launch their latest product line, the Firma Collection. The conversation dives deeply into the journey of both sales reps and designers to trace how this pair collaborated to define a new way to introduce and hopefully endear a product to its core audiences. Along the way, we steam up the NeoCon Podcast Studio with five bodies, over-plug SANDOW (just a little) and of course have a word or two on the state of ‘the metaverse' in the worlds of furniture and design. This episode was recorded in the NeoCon Podcast Studio Powered by SURROUND and Sponsored by SnapCab.Connect with our hosts on LinkedIn: Bobby BonettAndrew LaneFollow Annie Ming and Cosmo Kramer on LinkedInReferences and resources:Firma Table ConfiguratorHBFBitreelKubi by Barbara Berry NeoCon Design Scene by SANDOWRelated and referred BTE Episodes:Josh Rubin and Evan Orensten from Cool Hunting - the only other double guest episode in pod historyLisbeth Jimenez, Designer at MKDA, on the potential for 3D visualizationGet in touch with us with your questions on emerging technology, innovation and more at bte@sandowdesign.com or drop us a voicemail at the BTE Hotline at 1-917-934-2812.Discover more shows from SURROUND at surroundpodcasts.com. The history of bodybuilding is a captivating journey that intertwines with the evolution of physical fitness, cultural perceptions of the human body, and the pursuit of perfection. From ancient civilizations to modern-day competitions, bodybuilding has undergone significant transformations, shaping and being shaped by society's ideals and values. The origins of bodybuilding can be traced back to ancient Greece, where athletes trained to achieve physical prowess for competitive events like the Olympic Games. Sculpted statues and artworks from this era depict muscular physiques, highlighting the admiration for the human form. However, it wasn't until the late 19th century that bodybuilding as a structured discipline began to emerge. Eugen Sandow, often referred to as the "Father of Modern Bodybuilding," rose to prominence in the late 1800s with his impressive physique and groundbreaking performances. Sandow's exhibitions showcased his sculpted muscles and athleticism, captivating audiences worldwide and popularizing the concept of physical culture. He emphasized the importance of strength, symmetry, and aesthetics, laying the foundation for modern bodybuilding. In the early 20th century, the golden age of bodybuilding dawned with the advent of organized competitions and the rise of iconic figures like Charles Atlas and John Grimek. These pioneers inspired countless individuals to pursue bodybuilding as a means of self-improvement and personal expression. However, it wasn't until the mid-20th century that bodybuilding truly exploded onto the mainstream scene. The emergence of Muscle Beach in California during the 1940s and 1950s provided a platform for bodybuilders to showcase their talents in outdoor gyms along the sunny shores of Venice Beach. This vibrant community of fitness enthusiasts, including legends like Steve Reeves and Reg Park, attracted attention from the media and sparked a cultural phenomenon. The 1960s witnessed the rise of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB), founded by bodybuilding icon Joe Weider. The IFBB established standardized rules and regulations for competitions, paving the way for the sport's global expansion. During this era, Arnold Schwarzenegger emerged as a dominant force, captivating audiences with his imposing physique and charismatic persona. Schwarzenegger's reign during the 1970s solidified bodybuilding's place in popular culture, inspiring millions to hit the gym and sculpt their bodies. Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, bodybuilding continued to evolve, with athletes pushing the boundaries of muscular development and conditioning. The introduction of new training techniques, nutritional strategies, and supplementation further fueled the sport's growth. Additionally, the emergence of women's bodybuilding and other divisions, such as physique and bikini, diversified the competitive landscape, attracting a more diverse array of athletes. Today, bodybuilding remains a global phenomenon, with competitions held in countries around the world and a dedicated community of enthusiasts spanning all ages and backgrounds. While the sport continues to face scrutiny and stereotypes, its enduring appeal lies in its ability to empower individuals to transform their bodies and minds through discipline, dedication, and hard work. As bodybuilding enters a new era, its rich history serves as a testament to the enduring pursuit of physical excellence and the relentless drive to push the limits of human potential.

In this episode, we discuss how and when Billy Sandow and Ed "Strangler" Lewis really met.
The Great Competition, 1901, Royal Albert Hall, London…this was the birthplace of modern bodybuilding. The one and only Eugen Sandow managed to persevere through multiple years of war, logistical setbacks, and a political and cultural climate that viewed physique displays as potentially indecent, sometimes immoral, and at worst, as illegal pornography, to host the first championship bodybuilding show to find the “best built man in Britain and Ireland”. To even compete, entrants had to place top three in a full series of regional qualifiers where hundreds upon hundreds of athletes battled against one another in the years prior. Further, to even enter these regional qualifiers, entrants had to send in their pictures to Eugen Sandow's magazine for initial screening. The eventual championship in 1901 was truly a spectacle. Nearly ten thousand attendees packed Royal Albert Hall to the brim, an astonishing number that rivals the attendance of any modern bodybuilding competition…even the Olympia. Indeed, this historic event reverberates into the modern era, as modern Olympia winners receive “the Sandow”, a replica of the trophy given to the third-place winner of The Great Competition. In this episode, we're joined by Marcus Kment, a filmmaker, physical culturist, and amateur historian, who recently produced an excellent documentary on the Great Competition and the athletes who competed in it to discuss its significance and their story. Additionally, he's joined by our very own Dr. Conor Heffernan who consulted on this project. Join us to learn about this jaw-dropping history, as once again, history proves stranger than fiction! Motos and Friends is brought to you by the Yamaha Heritage line. The Yamaha name stands for a heritage of motorcycle performance and classic styling. Visit your local dealer to find the 2023 Yamaha sport heritage bike for you. This week we decided to change it up a little and we're bringing you three segments in this episode. In our first segment, I chat with Associate Editor Jonathan Handler, freshly returned from a trip to Germany to ride the interesting new BMW R 18 Roctane. This all out cruiser features the impressive BMW R 18 motor which has had a slightly mixed reaction in its other iterations. I have to say, in this particular model, the big boxer twin seems like the perfect fit for someone who wants a seriously powerful cruiser that's a little different from everything else out there. Let's see if Jonathan agrees with me! In our second segment, Associate Editor Teejay Adams chats with Ritzo Muntinga of SPC Power Clutch. Ritzo introduces the sintered aluminum indestructible clutch. The company now has a patent on these clutch plates and frankly they sound like a game-changing idea. If you're a seriously heavy clutch user, especially in sport such as off-road, Motocross, and so on, or perhaps you're a drag racer or stunt guy, then you're going to be really interested in what Ritzo has to say. In our third segment, Teejay chats with Angie Sandow. Angie plays guitar in her AC/DC cover band, she's an author, motivational speaker, and of course a motorcycle rider. Interestingly, she's also partially handicapped—she only has one hand. To hear how she overcomes life's challenges—and still gets to play guitar and ride her motorcycle—are amazing. Her bubbly personality and sheer strength of will come across are inspiration indeed. So, from all of us here at Motos and Friends—we hope you enjoy this episode! We love your feedback! Firms balance work between the tension of innovating their practice and finding their footing in the changes of the industry. Simultaneously, firms are advising clients on the future work, ESG metrics, and more. What are people paying the most attention to in the current industry? Welcome to the second season of Architecture 5 10 20! I'm your host, Guy Geier, Managing Partner of FXCollaborative Architects in New York. Guests from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences related to the built environment will come to share their thought leadership. Our conversations will start with understanding how they arrived at what they're doing now. More importantly, we will focus on discussing their vision for the future, looking out 5, 10, and 20 years. Today, we're joined by Amanda Schneider, researcher, writer and founder of ThinkLab, the intelligence division of SANDOW. She is also the host of Design Nerds Anonymous, the interiors industry focused podcast that sparks curiosity at the intersection of business and design. She started as a product designer, noticed an industrial design and product design gap, and worked towards closing that gap since then. Listen to Amanda speak about the finding of ThinkLab's recent research and where the data has indicated opportunities in the architecture and design industry. She discusses the healthy tensions of evolving as a firm. Firms can leverage data to recognize opportunities where design should push the envelope, such as digitization, sustainability, and DEI. Later on, Amanda explores where most architect firms may land on the spectrum of creativity vs efficiency, tradition vs futurism, and in person work vs hybrid work. Amanda's research findings around digitization, sustainability, and diversity, equity and inclusion, show measured progress in the architecture and design industry, as well as opportunities for action that are backed by data. Understanding these important topics and emerging tensions through the lens of current research can help firms, as well as our clients, make informed decisions that will benefit the future of our industry. Time stamps: [01:13] - Amanda Schneider feels audio is uncharted territory. How can this boost business? [03:29] - Amanda explains how she found her way to the design industry for the built environment. [06:25] - What are people paying attention to in the current industry? [08:54] - Amanda suggests three topics A&D firms could proactively discuss. [10:42] - How does architecture differ in the metaverse? [12:38] - Amanda talks about leveraging virtual spaces while keeping real life experiences. [14:35] - What are the early innovations happening at the intersection of architecture and AI? [16:12] - Amanda shares the sustainability results of the building industry during recent years. [18:09] - Why does the life cycle of a building matter in sustainability conversations? [19:30] - Here are questions to ask when deciding on sustainability approaches in the built environment. [21:43] - How many clients are asking for ESG related measures? How much does it depend on which generation you're interacting with? [24:23] - Amanda shares the data that surrounds DEI awareness in firms. [26:13] - How do firms choose when to innovate or when to refine an idea? [28:57] - Relate to generations as prototypes and clues to the future, rather than stereotypes. [30:43] - In the current market, do most designers see themselves as early adopters, fast followers, or traditionalists? [33:35] - What is the office of the future? [36:21] - “The rebirth of the office.” [38:08] - Thank you Amanda for reminding us to use research findings to make informed decisions that will benefit the future of our industry. In four short years founder Adam Sandow has rapidly grown the company to feature 500 brands serving nearly 100,000 users—and raised more than 325 million dollars in the process. On this episode of the show, Sandow speaks with host Dennis Scully about moving into the residential side of the industry, the challenge of making the platform affordable to smaller makers, and why he thinks design brands need to make themselves easier to work with if they're going to survive. This episode is sponsored by Vaughan and Serena & Lily LINKSMaterial BankDennis ScullyBusiness of Home

I've always struggled, since I went to art school, with the question of: What is the career of making paintings in the twenty-first century? Of sitting alone in a room and painting in a way people did 500 years ago, in the world of technology and movies and stuff. So I always wanted to make works that are about now, but then show that they're coming out of the history of art and are tied to art history… And to say, look, see how the history of art keeps moving forward, and it's still connected… It's sort of a way to try to prove that painting matters.Sandow Birk is an artist whose works have dealt with contemporary life in its entirety, exploring themes such as inner city violence, graffiti, political issues, travel, war, and prisons, as well as surfing and skateboarding. Some of his work specifically engages with the kinds of “great books” that we explore here at the Spouter-Inn, including an illustrated version of Dante's Divine Comedy, reworked with Marcus Sanders, from 2005, as well as the American Qur'an, published in 2016.Sandow joins us to discuss these two projects and the impulse of reading a centuries-old text and saying: What if this were here and now?
