The noted author and teacher, Joseph B. Atkins, is a veteran writer and professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Mississippi.             Joe's latest book, Harry Dean Stanton: Hollywood's Zen Rebel, won the Bronze Award for biography from the Independent Publisher Book Awards in 2021.             Regarding Joe's novel, Casey's Last Chance, Edgar Award-winning author Megan Abbott called it, “…pitch-perfect vintage noir.”             Among his other notable works, Joe authored the nonfiction Covering for the Bosses: Labor and the Southern Press. And his novella, Crossed Roads, was a finalist in the Pirate's Alley Faulkner Awards in New Orleans. Joe also edited and contributed to the short story collection Mojo Rising: Contemporary Writers, Vol. II.             His articles and short stories have appeared in The Oxford American, Noir City, Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, USA Today, Baltimore Sun, In These Times, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and the Guadalajara Reporter.             Joe's feature film screenplay, Memphis Tango, was a finalist in the 2021 Final Draft Screenplay Competition and Toronto and Vancouver independent film festivals.       He served as a congressional correspondent for Gannett News Service in Washington, D.C. and worked for several newspapers across the U.S. South. I've read both Harry Dean Stanton: Hollywood's Zen Rebel and Casey's Last Chance and can tell you that Joe has remarkable range. His book on Harry Dean Stanton is a fascinating, in-depth look at one of the most beloved yet unsung actors Hollywood has ever produced. And Casey's Last Chance is a ripping, action-filled, page-turner. I highly recommend both books to you.

In this episode, the hosts discuss various topics related to the Toronto Maple Leafs, including goaltending, team physicality, the upcoming schedule, the importance of winning games, and of course, the up and coming trade deadline. Takeaways The Toronto Maple Leafs' defense has shown resiliency despite injuries and inconsistent performances from some players. The team needs to improve their special teams and overall consistency to be successful in the second half of the season. At the trade deadline, the Leafs should focus on acquiring defensemen and a left winger to address their roster needs. The NHL All-Star Weekend provided memorable moments, including meeting media members, the All-Star red carpet, and the mascot showdown. The Eastern Conference standings are tight, and the Leafs need to maintain their position in the playoff race. Facing the Carolina Hurricanes in the playoffs might be a better matchup for the Leafs compared to the New York Rangers. Having goaltenders with Stanley Cup experience can be beneficial for a team in the playoffs. Team physicality and matchups play a role in determining success in games. From the award-winning author of Two Crows Sorrow comes another historical true crime story about secret identities, deception, and murder. At the turn of the century, an ex-convict from Ireland arrives in the back country of rural Nova Scotia, whereupon he is accused of murdering a man and burying him in the victim's own cellar under a pile of potatoes. Rooted in Deception follows the life of John Kavanagh and how this petty criminal deceives everyone in his path until he is eventually accused of a heinous and violent murder for which he is ultimately hanged. But how much of the tragedy was of his own doing and how much had been woven by his enemies? Told from a variety of perspectives, including that of the accused, the book creates a sympathetic case for a man who may deserve none. Using primary sources including newspaper articles, trial transcripts and actual letters from the accused, the true story of the murder of Freeman Harvey is told using creative nonfiction devices to fill in the gaps of the narrative. Rooted in Deception follows Two Crows Sorrow, which was awarded the 2020 Bronze Award for best creative nonfiction by the Miramichi Reader. ROOTED IN DECEPTION-Laura Churchill Duke

John Anthony has been a lifelong performer, but he only began to study acting in 2014 after auditing a class in Dallas TX.  His previous experience prepared him well though, given John spent time on stage with the Improv Comedy troupe Comedy Sportz, based in Dallas.  He committed his time and effort to delving deeper after that initial class, and he has never looked back.  John considers himself fortunate to having studied under these amazing artists: Michelle Condrey, Jackie Burch, and Glenn Morshower.Rather than choosing an existing movie scene to recreate in his classes, John took the road less traveled and wrote his own scene as an experiment.  That was all it took to be bitten by the writing bug and bring the stories in his mind to life.  Since taking that first leap in class performing original material, John has  written and acted in more than fifteen short films, authored two screen plays with more ideas just waiting to be narrated in a script.  Both his writing and acting have been laureled in multiple film festivals, including the Platinum Award for Best Actor in The Independent Movie Awards (Los Angeles, CA) and the Bronze Award for Best Drama for his short film “A Love Not Lost”.  “A Family Matter”, “Rookies”, “Swimmers”,  and his first film “A Gift” have been recognized with various awards and accolades.John's career branched out in recent years having booked local and national commercials with these companies: Ready Seal, Inc., H-E-B Grocery Company, LP, and Ambetter Insurance.  Don't be surprised when you hear his voice in advertisements, given he has booked some voice over spots too. When he isn't acting, writing, or directing, John enjoys working out and spending time with his family.  He credits his wife, Anne, to be his biggest supporter. Bottom-up drivers are parents recognizing the benefits of sports for their children. As with many Chinese sectors, there is a dizzying array of impressive numbers to consider. The National Development and Reform Commission has invested US$1.4 trillion into sport, including facilities and infrastructure. Youth sports participation was a $53b industry in 2018 and is growing 14%/year.People are watching sports on tv and on their mobile phones. A Douyin short video clip with ice hockey centre Connor McDavid did relatively poorly, only having 13 million viewers. Game 4 of the Stanley Cup had 60 million views, more than all the combined views in the US.Rapid-Fire Questions:Most popular sport in China? Basketball, with 600m fans and 300m participants. Soccer and swimming are also popular. Winter sports are growing, with more than a million figure skaters, and 20 million ski visits in 2019. Only about 10,000 people play hockey, but they are a sought-after demographic.Best-known professional athlete: Basketball player YAO Ming.  Recommendation to better understand China – a book by Peter Martin called China's Civilian Army: The Making of Wolf Warrior Diplomacy. This multi-part miniseries is sponsored by SnapPay.

Dato Razlan Razali is living his childhood dream from running Sepang International Circuit (SIC) for over a decade, hosting F1 and MotoGP races and turning the loss-making facility into a sustainable business to turning his passion for motorcycling into being the Team Principal of the Petronas Yamaha Sepang Race Team which is taking MotoGP by storm the last two seasons and is on the verge of winning the Championship.  Listen, learn and be inspired by his stories on how to build a successful Racetrack and how those learnings helped him to create a very successful MotoGP racing team.      Key Highlights His career start, selling his first company, starting a concert company with his brother and his first job interview for the CEO role of Sepang International Circuit (SIC) which didn't go so well. Persistency paid off and he became the CEO of SIC in 2008, few weeks before the MotoGP race. Early days at SIC, he inherited a mess and had a culture shock,  rolled up his sleeve and started to make changes. Starting to charge for everything in and around the track to generate new revenues.  More professionalism and commercialization was the key. Turn SIC into a multi facet venue -  “a ballroom under the sky”. Hosting Formula 1 at SIC stories, his first meeting with Bernie Ecclestone, again didn't go so well…… 2009 the first F1 race under his leadership, made changes, focus on what's best for SIC and Malaysia and disregarding F1 and the arrogance of F1 teams. Till the end, it was never a happy marriage with F1, race became jaded, nothing new and was eventually dropped. MotoGP was the opposite, Dorna's Carmelo Ezpeleta was open to all his ideas and wanted to do more, the growth and success of the race since then is proof. Very vocal when F1 race was dropped,  “even given for free, Malaysia would not host F1 race”,  Reuters headline worldwide. Revealing the fee SIC paid to F1 and the reasons why the Prime Minister of Malaysia asked him to get out. MotoGP success stories, how it all started, creating local heroes by starting a young rider search, academy and having wild card riders in Moto3 (125cc category). Created the first SIC Moto3 team in 2015,  challenge taking riders from “Kapcai” racing on the streets of Malaysia to a full fledge racing machine in Europe (money, motivation and mindset). Lots of talented local riders in terms of skill but most lacking mental strength. First Season in MotoGP in 2019 – lady luck played a role – stories of how it all started – his childhood dream came true. Petronas played a key role in taking over a financially struggling MotoGP team. How he found “Fabio” (Quartararo) – stroke of luck and how he came out blazing from the start and winning “Rookie of the Year” award, first podium till leading standing now. His thoughts on winning the MotoGP Championship this year – original target was to just win the “first” race  (which they did with the first & second race of the season). Superhumans – stories of his riders dealing with crashes. Valentino Rossi – the Doctor is joining the team in 2021 – the story behind it (and Fabio leaving to Yamaha Factory team). MotoGP “bubble”, how it's working, SOPs, rules, regulations and restrictions – importance of team talks. His prediction for the Championship with four races to go. His final thoughts on the future of Motorsports after Covid – difference between F1 and MotoGP.   About Dato Razlan Razali is a dynamic and highly successful Senior Executive with extensive high-level successes across a wide variety of industries, including world-class event management. First-class leadership skills with excellent marketing and sponsorship development experience in both national and international arenas. Consistently aims for the highest standards on a personal and corporate level. Proven ability to generate innovative growth strategies for successful and profitable companies. Find our blog and more resources at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Zoey shares why she choose mental health awareness for her project and the difference methods she used to increase awareness. More from Zoey: I began my journey as a Girl Scout when I was in second grade so I was considered a Brownie at the time. I stuck with the same troop for the next twelve years. I was lucky enough to have had the most kindhearted and influential leaders as well as some lifelong friends. I was able to receive both my Bronze Award and my Gold Award. My Gold Award was a snapshot of my love for mental health and the desire to end the stigma that is around mental health as a whole. I chose to go about the topic of mental health due to being a survivor myself as well as having family and friends who have also fought their own battles with mental health. High school seemed to be the best example of where a lot of the stigma lies which is a huge reason I decided to pursue a subject seen as “ taboo” in the eyes of those in my school specifically. After high school, I decided to continue my education at UNC Charlotte to receive two bachelor’s degrees; one in Criminal Justice and the other in Psychology. I then hope to continue and get a bachelor’s in either area and possibly a Ph.D in the future as well. It's ABOUT TIME for another interview episode, am I right?! And I'm excited to launch a new interview series with Alison A. from Girl Scouts of Silver Sage in Idaho!  In this episode, we talk about how Alison's troop has had to adapt in this weird season of Covid-19, what her troop missed out on because they had to cancel/postpone, and what they've been doing to make the most of this time... including earning a Bronze Award while social distancing! Additionally, we cover all the usual info. She shares her favorite resources to help run her troop, reflects on her proudest moments and favorite memories both as a child growing up as a Canadian Girl Guide as well as as an adult volunteer for both Girl Guides of Canada and GSUSA, and shares some tips and best practices for making the most out of Girl Scout Journey programming (which can be a daunting and overwhelming task for some!).  If you want to check out the resources she mentions in this podcast episode, here are some links for you: https://www.facebook.com/groups/GirlScoutsGab https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCweS29uohixfn-onxLgWHrw

We are thrilled to welcome Chef/Partners Scott Schroeder and Pat O'Malley of Hungry Pigeon in studio. The restaurant is the dream project of Scott and Pat. Best known for serving comfort food in an all-day cafe/restaurant environment, Hungry Pigeon is beloved by Philadelphians and visitors alike. They met as line cooks 13 years ago at ¡Pasion! Restaurant and they haven't matured a bit despite their combined thirty-five plus years in the restaurant industry. They also have friendship, resourcefulness, and, fortunately, complimentary skills. The two of them plan the Hungry Pigeon's menus daily. Their girlfriends designed the space, but O'Malley and Schroeder take credit for it every time. The team was also on the James Beard Foundation Semifinalist list this year: Chef/Partner Pat O'Malley up for Outstanding Pastry Chef nationwide. Can't wait to talk to them! Our next guest is Gregory Conocchioli the owner of Gregory BenjaminArtisan Preserves and Marmalades. Greg started making preserves with neighbors when he was eight years old. His passion for artisan home made products and home style presentation took him from this simple beginning to the opening of his own catering business in Philadelphia, PA in 1984. Preserves led to chutneys and pickled products and also to baked confections, and then to off-premise catering which led to his wholesale bakery, Made in Buck's County. Philadelphia Magazine named Gregory's Chocolate Chip Cookie the Best of Philly. He was again named by Philadelphia Magazine, the Best of Philly in August 2013, for his preserves. In November 2013, he was named Best Artisanal Spread by Cooking Light magazine. In 2015 his Country Christmas Marmalade received the prestigious Artisan Marmalade Gold Award at the Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, Cumbria Travel, England. Once again in 2016 he received the Artisan Marmalade Silver Award for his MacGregory Benjamins Orange Marmalade, a Bronze Award for Scented Lemon Rhubarb Marmalade, and a special commendation for his Sealed with a Kiss Chocolate Orange Raspberry Marmalade. His gourmet food stores in Frenchtown, New Jerseyand New Hope PA were known for his signature gift baskets and gift boxes. For many years these stores were the only places in America where you could buy his amazing products. Now you can buy them on-line and we'll ship them directly from his kitchen to your home or gift recipient. They all sound delicious! With warmer weather finally upon us on the East Coast, it's that time again to PLAY BALL! We are happy to welcome General Manager Justin Ferrarella of the Sussex County Miners, a professional baseball team in the independent Can-Am League. Fans can enjoy exciting baseball, promotional nights, and great daily specials, including their spectacular fireworks shows. They have a unique set-up in rural and picturesque Sussex County, New Jersey where you can check out a fun dinner-and-a-show experience at Skylands Stadium, a minor league baseball park in Augusta, NJ with an on-site restaurant run by Krave Cafe + Caterer. The restaurant WheelHouse Craft Kitchen + Bar, works with many local farms, breweries and distilleries in Northwest NJ to create fresh menu items that are always changing to reflect the changing season and events. They also provide cocktails and refreshments inside the events including food truck festivals, beer festivals, comedy nights, boat shows, light shows, and holiday extravaganzas, as well as private and corporate functions. Sounds like a match made in heaven! To top it all off we also have joining us Nathan Marshall. He is a passionate and dedicated wine enthusiast who loves to have fun! He has worked in the industry creating tasting notes for wineries/agencies, running digital marketing campaigns promoting wine and beer, and working as a wine expert for a chain of wine and spirits retailers. He started off several years ago as someone who was at best, mildly interested in wine. I remembered hearing people discuss different types of wine and how something like where the grapes were grown can even impact the end result. To someone who didn't really grow up with wine, this was a very strange idea to him. Over the course of the next several years, a mild interest flourished into a full on passion. He began attending regular tastings, subscribing to different magazines, interacting with people online, and basically soaking up any and all information he could get my hands on related to wine. We all know that building relationships and going that extra mile is what makes us memorable, both with clients and with our teams. How can we go about building strong relationships with our team members? How do we humanize our interactions with buyers and show emotion via text messages? How can we leverage relationships in the digital world? In this episode, Linda and Kellie Revoir share how they leveraged relationships to grow their business.   People look at houses online long before they step foot into the house. -Kellie Revoir   Resources:  - Join the Club Wealth Real Estate Agent Mastermind Facebook Group - Get info on the Business Strategy Mastermind Conference November 13th-15th 2018 in Anaheim, CA   Three Things We Learned From This Episode   Daily meetings keeps the team glued together Agents don’t come to a team because of the culture, but they stay and leave because of it. Daily meetings keep the team motivated and accountable. You get to talk with each agent about what they are doing and how it’s working for them. This will open the opportunity not only to coach them but also find out more about who they are as people and build a relationship with them. Social media is the new word of mouth Most houses are seen online and your social media profile is the place where prospects get to know you better by scrolling through your posts. Your social media presence is a representation of you, so make sure you have professional photos and content that will make you look professional and trustworthy. Humanize your text messages Text messages are the most effective way of reaching out to potential buyers. The problem is that they lack emotion. But when you add a video of yourself to your text message, it’s easier to reach out to buyers and get more responses. People like when they are given a little bit more attention and when they know they are speaking with a real person, not with an automated message.   Video messages convert more. Not only do they have an open rate of 95%, but when you make it interesting and unexpected, you also appear more friendly and likable. However, the mistake many agents make is to try to convince someone over text to sign papers before seeing the house. Let your buyers see the house first and don’t push the sale. You can’t convince someone who is likely to make the biggest purchase of their life to work with you after you’ve sent them a few messages.   Guest Bio Linda Revoir is a tier 1 coach at Wealth Club with over 12 years of experience in the real estate industry. She made the jump to building a business in 2006, a decision that completely changed her life. A few years later she was awarded a number of prizes, including: #1 Top Producer (2016), Bronze Award (2008-2016), Silver Award (2012-2016), and Quality Service Certified GOLD. Today, she is one of the most respected realtors in Springfield and surrounding areas. Kellie Revoir teamed up with her mother Linda Revoir and continued the family tradition in real estate. She is a tier 2 coach at Wealth Club and she works with her mom in the Springfield area, where she is in charge of the recruitment process at the Revoir team.

Steven Payson (Author of How Economics Professors Can Stop Failing Us: The Discipline at a Crossroads) In this talk, Dr. Payson examines the incentive system that economics professors face in their work, and how that incentive system needs to improve in order to ensure the profession’s success overall, including its consideration and adoption of pluralism. Success in this regard refers to the contribution of discourse that is valuable to society, by advancing useful knowledge and providing the background for effective policies. His talk focuses on the differences between the scientific pursuit of knowledge and the competitive “publication game” that academic economists are compelled to play in order to advance their careers. The talk is based on Payson’s new book: How Economics Professors Can Stop Failing Us. Speaker biography: Steven Payson has 34 years of professional experience in economics, having worked as an economic consultant for over three years, as an associate at the Inter-American Development Bank, and, for the past 26 years, as a United States government economist. In the United States government Dr. Payson has worked at the National Science Foundation and the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, and Interior. In the U.S. Commerce Department, Dr. Payson served as Chief of the Special Studies Branch, and then Chief of Research, in the Government Division of the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the past seven years he has been a senior economic advisor in the Department of the Interior. For work he has performed in the U.S. government, Dr. Payson received a Bronze Award from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and a Gold Award from the Department of the Interior. Faust A. Ruggiero's professional career spans almost 40 years, and is diversified and compelling, as it has consistently established new and exciting cutting-edge counseling programs in its pursuit of professional excellence and personal life enhancement. He is a published research author, clinical trainer, and a therapist who has worked in settings that have included clinics for deaf children, prisons, nursing homes, substance abuse centers, inpatient facilities, and as the President of the Community Psychological Center in Bangor, Pennsylvania. In that capacity, he developed the Process Way of Life counseling program, and has developed it into a formal text presented in the Fix Yourself Handbook. Upon graduating from Mansfield University in 1977, Mr. Ruggiero enrolled in the graduate program in Psychology at Illinois State University. There, with a dual major in clinical and developmental psychology, with a minor in research, he assisted in the publication of several research articles, including his thesis “The effects of prosocial and antisocial television programs on the cognitions of children”. Upon leaving graduate school, Mr. Ruggiero began working with Antoinette Goffredo counseling services providing psychological intervention to adolescent deaf children. There, he helped Ms. Goffredo develop a behavioral management program for profoundly deaf children with residual hearing. In 1982, he accepted a position with the Lehigh Valley Alcohol Counseling Center. There he provided individual counseling services to clientele suffering from alcohol abuse and addiction, including the introduction to both the twelve-step recovery process, and family and intervention services. It was at the alcohol counseling center, where Mr. Ruggiero was asked to develop a Phase 2 counseling program for individuals convicted of drunk driving offenses. In 1984, Mr. Ruggiero left the Alcohol Counseling Center to pursue a treatment position at Northampton County prison. There, he provided psychological and substance abuse intake and counseling services to inmates. He coordinated all substance abuse services, and program development services for inmates. In 1986, he obtained his certification in substance abuse treatment in the state of Pennsylvania. He left Northampton County prison in 1989 pursue his endeavors at the Community Psychological Center on a full-time basis. In 1994, Mr. Ruggiero accepted an invitation to become a trainer for the Department of Health in Pennsylvania. Mr. Ruggiero also provides counseling services for first responders, law enforcement, and other emergency personnel. Following several years of experimentation regarding the various therapeutic approaches, Mr. Ruggiero developed and began utilizing the Process Way of Life Program. The program consists of over fifty internal human processes, which can be accessed and developed to help clients address the various conditions which were affecting their lives. After the program was developed, it was rigorously researched and tested, and changes were made culminating in the approach presently being used by Mr. Ruggiero at the Community Psychological Center. In the summer of 2016, Mr. Ruggiero decided to develop the Process Life Program into a text that can be published, and would help people in need address the difficult situations that are affecting their lives.
