The Caregiver's Journal hosted by Lance A. Slatton with Cindy (PT) & Christina (ST) Hardin-Weiss. The Caregiver's Journal is the show where we are sharing the caregiving experiences, stories, and wisdom of family caregivers. Chapter 5 - "Finding Support": In this journal entry, we welcomed Laurette Klier who shared her caregiving journey and how she is "Finding Support". About Laurette Klier: Laurette Klier is the founder of NANA'S BOOKS, a treasury of art and literature pairings in approachable, adaptive formats, mindfully designed to meet the needs of people living with brain change and their communities of care. A career educator, Laurette saw that her mother-in-law, ‘Nana Mary', who was living with Lewy body dementia had entirely abandoned her daily newspapers and large print books, and decided to try her hand at creating books that Nana could read and enjoy once again. Because NANA'S book was such a hit, Laurette kept making more books, with topics requested by neighbors and friends who were also living with cognitive change. Based in nostalgia, the resonant themes struck such a chord with elders in life review, a common thread began to appear: books that honor identity and give elders the visual and auditory cues they need empower them to reminisce and converse with ease. Now with 40 books in print and digital libraries, Laurette is focused on getting the word out to families, communities, and libraries seeking to re-ignite lifespan reading and unite generations. Laurette holds master's and undergraduate degrees from Boston College, in education and speech communications. She is a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) certified senior advisor (CSA), certified in individual Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (iCST) and Habilitation Therapy, and is finishing up her Engagement Leader Certification with Teepa Snow's Positive Approach to Care. NANA'S BOOKS have received a 2021 Maude's Award for Innovation in Making Connections, a 2023 National Service to Seniors Award from CSA, and a 2023 National Mature Media Award for Innovation in Digital Resources for Caregivers. About Cindy (PT) & Christina (ST): Cindy graduated in 1992 with a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy from Washington University in St Louis, MO. The majority of her career has been spent in Home Healthcare. She is passionate about helping people maintain their independence, especially when it makes a difference in their ability to remain in their homes. Christina graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Master's degree in Communication Disorders & Science. She spent most of her career treating patients in skilled nursing facilities. She enjoys working with individuals who have dementia and educating their families. She also likes helping people who have difficulty eating, chewing, and swallowing due to illness or disease. Cindy and Christina are the founders of Adaptive Equipment Caregiving Corner (AEC). In today's episode of The Prosperous Piano Teacher Podcast, we had the privilege of diving deep into the fascinating journey of Melody Payne, a piano pedagogy expert turned successful online business owner. My first interaction with Melody Payne was back in 2019 when I reached out to her, hoping my piano pedagogy students could observe her teaching. I had stumbled upon her website completely randomly and was instantly impressed by her professionalism, eye for design, and the exceptional quality of her resources and studio communications. Melody graciously allowed my students to observe her teaching and permitted me to use her website as an educational resource, which was invaluable for teaching basic business practices.Melody started her career as a traditional piano teacher and professor. However, she embraced the digital transformation and moved her business online, which allowed her to reach a wider audience. This transition showcases the importance of adapting to new technologies and being open to change. She discussed how her online business began out of necessity. She created resources that she needed for her own students, and soon realized that other teachers could benefit from them as well. This led to the creation of her online store. The transition to digital wasn't without challenges. Melody had to learn new skills, such as graphic design and digital marketing, to create and promote her products. Her dedication to learning and improving has been a significant factor in her success. This episode is a treasure trove of inspiration and practical advice for anyone looking to create alternative streams of revenue, especially through digital resources. Melody Payne's story is a testament to the power of passion, innovation, and perseverance. This podcast episode is all about how NOT to use digital resources. I wanted to mention that this isn't the first time we have talked about this topic on the podcast. In 2019, I recorded an episode called “How Not to Use Technology in Speech Therapy.” I'll be covering some of the same themes today, and expanding on some of the ideas that were mentioned in that episode. I'll also bring some new suggestions into the mix. Go here to access the show notes: https://bit.ly/TSSEP122
Pet owners complain about the rising cost of veterinary prices. What's to blame? This is a special bonus episode of What People Do that I've produced as a part of sponsored content for Animal Health Digest, a premier content curation service collecting and commenting on actionable information for people working in animal health. I talk with Dr. Jennifer Sperry about the rising cost of veterinary care. Pet owners often say they're shocked and unprepared for the bill when they visit their local veterinary hospital. How can they cope? And what should they know about why costs are rising? Dr. Sperry is a veterinarian and a veterinary advisor at Independence Pet Group. IPG has several pet insurance brands specifically designed to help manage the risk of costs for services at veterinary practices. We discuss an opinion piece she has drafted with her perspective on five reasons for these increasing costs other than inflation. Agree? Disagree? Let's get into it ... Further reading: Dr. Sperry's short opinion piece is available to read in the Digital Resources section at vet.aspcapetinsurance.com. Read more from the Animal Health Digest and subscribe here (it's free!). Final notes: ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance is a sponsor of Animal Health Digest, and we (and they) wanted to make sure the legal details made it in. So, please note ... Dr. Sperry's policy covers eligible treatments for new and unexpected accidents and illnesses, including exam fees, prescriptions, hospitalization, surgery, referrals, alternative medicine*, prescription food*, and medical devices* (*are sublimited). Her policy limit is $5,000 annually with a $100 deductible and 10% coinsurance. Dr. Sperry had already met her deductible and had not yet exceeded her $5,000 annual limit in the example mentioned during this podcast. Plan premiums may vary based on location, your pet's breed and age, and the plan type, plan variables including annual deductible, annual limit, and reimbursement rate. The premium and reimbursement example from the podcast was based on the annual deductible being met in full. Pre-existing conditions are not covered. As if an interest in patristics isn't strange enough, in this episode we're getting still more exotic. We're entering the world of Armenian patristics. We're visiting the ancient city of Ejmiatsin—leaping over the barriers of language (and even alphabet) to encounter the heroes too often neglected in the histories. This is the story of St. Gregory the Illuminator and his contemporaries, and the Church they founded. Armenia also became a great center of learning and so houses translations of many Greek and Syriac works that would otherwise be lost. Many mental health practitioners will have experienced a client who is hesitant to use telehealth services because they feel the connection and therapeutic relationship won't be the same compared to in person sessions. But is this actually accurate? If we do need to use telehealth, how can we ensure our relationship with clients is strong? In this episode, Dr Caitlin Miller interviews Ross Jacobs, Clinical Implementation Lead for NSW/ACT at Orygen and Julia Reynolds, Clinical Psychologist at Australian National University, about using telehealth and digital resources. They talk about setting a frame when working with telehealth, engaging different types of clients, and how you can use digital interventions alongside your practice to provide support for your clients.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To assess patients on a one-to-one basis for social determinants of health (SDOH) is an important, yet often high touch process conducted by health center staff. So what might a lower touch approach to these vital screenings look like? Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC) sought to explore innovative solutions in order to assess the specific needs of their over 80,000 patients throughout Los Angeles County. Today we hear from Debra Rosen and Alejandra Mata at NEVHC about their exciting and ongoing journey in digitizing the patient screening process. They share how integrating different tools on a familiar platform can better identify specific patient population needs and allow them to offer pertinent community resources more widely - while also impacting the provider's quality of service at the point of care. Here's where you can learn more about the people, places, and ideas in this episode: Debra Rosen, RN, MPH, Director of Quality, Health Equity, and Innovation; and Alejandra Mata, Associate Director of Health Equity - Northeast Valley Health Corporation (NEVHC)One Degree, web and mobile platform that makes it easy for low-income families to find, manage, and review nonprofit and government servicesTechnology Hub, a CCI program that helps organizations vet, pilot, evaluate, and spread innovative digital health solutions targeting Medicaid markets and historically underinvested communities. *Exciting announcement! When it comes to work, I can be disorganized. Which is why I rely on handy dandy resources to help me out. It's taken some time to find the right ones for me, and honestly they'll probably change over the years. But for now, I like them! I took the leap into my freelance career in 2022, and it has really challenged me to find resources that work, are efficient, utilize my time well and manage my time well so that I can be helpful for clients and my schedule. So this episode is all about proper bookkeeping, payment, video edits, my favorite podcast resources, team collaboration and streamlining all the things in our work life. My guest this week is Erin Baute. She is an expert in The Enneagram assessment. She has been using it for 12 years and is a certified Enneagram teacher and trainer. Her background is in Human Health and Development. Erin told me: I geek out, I get excited by making behavior change. So I studied public health in graduate school. I'm getting my PhD in organizational psychology now, and I'm really interested in figuring out how we influence behavior that has a communal impact that makes a difference.Enneagram, if you are not familiar with it, " as a behavioral model of personality, is meant to help us understand the why underneath our behavior."Her take on this personality assessment is not like most of the Enneagram people out there. The way she uses it is expansive. She believes that our type, our number, is one window into who we are but it says nothing about why we are that way. I asked Erin if taking this and other typing tests put people into a box or put a label on them that then limits them. Here's her response, "the clear distinction is that the assessment is not meant to tell us who I am. It's showing me why I choose the patterns of behavior I choose. Why did I learn to limit myself? Why did my life and whatever I faced say, Hey, Gregory, if you make yourself small in this way, if you limit yourself in this way, you're safer, you belong more, you cope better. You make your parents happy. So actually naming our Enneagram type is naming the most limited version of ourselves. That is the box. Right? And so when we get to know the whole model, we hold it as a map. I am actually all of these things."Erin and I share a belief in the idea of freedom being central to an optimal experience of life. For me the word rebellious embodies that, for Erin, it's wild. To find the resources Erin mentions--the one free Enneagram assessment she can live with but says "it's okay to take a test. Just don't trust it all the way."--scroll down on her home page til you find 4 boxes, one is Digital Resources. Or go to her shopify page to grab the free test and other content to support what you learn. https://livingtheenneagram.com (Erin's website) Erin offers one on one Enneagram typing consultations as well as group coaching for leaders and one on one coaching to fully live the Enneagram. Check out her offerings here: https://livingtheenneagram.com/my-offerings-and-philosophy A book we talked about that made a big difference in both our lives coincidentally is https://www.amazon.com/What-Happened-You-Conversations-Resilience/dp/B08PW4Q284/ref=sr_1_1?crid=34SWFQR22A6MZ&keywords=what+happened+to+you&qid=1649427034&s=books&sprefix=What+Happened%2Cstripbooks%2C121&sr=1-1 (What Happened To You?)by Oprah and Dr. Bruce Perry. It's a reframe on how we treat people with trauma, what trauma looks like, and how to heal. I recommend it on Audible or from your library because Perry tells such great stories and with humor and compassion.

He shares his experiences as a professor and curriculum developer, around creating content for anatomy and physiology courses, and how this has evolved over the years.
