One of the key findings in the Waitangi Tribunal’s investigation into Oranga Tamariki has found the Crown “guilty of direct and sustained breaches of Māori Treaty rights”. It condemns the state's harmful intrusion into the lives of whānau Māori, and policy that has been dominated by efforts to assimilate Māori to Pākehā ways, while praising the resilience of individual Māori and whānau in the face of systemic racism and deprivation. The Waitangi Tribunal has urged the Crown to step back and allow Māori to reclaim their space. Its key recommendation is the establishment of a Māori Transition Authority, with the goal of identifying and implementing the changes needed to eliminate state care of tamariki & pepi Māori. But it stopped short of recommending Oranga Tamariki be abolished.
As many as one in six young people now experience mental health problems ranging from depression to self-harm and anorexia. The situation’s got worse over the last year during the pandemic leading some doctors to warn that this is just the “tip of the iceberg” with a “timebomb” on the horizon. The children’s Minister Vicky Ford talks to Emma Barnett about the issues and how Children's and Mental Health Services around the UK are coping as well about her own battles with anorexia whilst growing up. With almost every elderly care home resident in Scotland now vaccinated and the three-week period to build immunity reached, relatives are calling on the government in Scotland, public health teams and care homes, to let residents see at least one close relative or friend in a more natural and regular way. The Broken Hearts campaign is led by Care Home Relatives Scotland, a Facebook group with 1700 members. Twenty three year old, Lucy Challenor is one of those. She explains the impact of having a mother and a grandmother in a care home with very little access. Are you a fan of sexy books? Jilly Cooper and Jackie Collins inspired Daisy Buchanan to write her first novel 'Insatiable' about the sexual adventures of Violet. She joins Emma to discuss writing fiction about female desire. Helping young people stay connected and supported is a key part of the Government's latest announcement.More than $150 million is being invested over the next four years into a new support service to help young people transition from state care into adulthood. The funding's expected to help about 3000 young people aged 18 to 25.It will also fund those aged over 18 to remain with their caregiver up to the age of 21.Children's Minister, Tracey Martin, told Kate Hawkesby it's designed to ensure no one has to figure it out for themselves. She says it's important they have someone to turn to for help when they encounter milestones in their lives like signing their first lease agreement.Martin says it's hard to know exactly how many people will require the service, given 50 per cent of young people feel they don't have support elsewhere.
