Ep. 428 Tim Ross - What Secrets Do to the Body and Why Confession Is the Path to Healing

In this conversation, Tim opens up about the wound that shaped his early life, the silence that followed, and what the long road toward healing has actually required. We get into what secrets do to the body, the difference between vertical confession and horizontal healing, why accountability that feels like parole isn't really accountability, what grief work demands and what gets stuck when we skip it, and what it looks like to stop letting a younger, wounded version of yourself run the show.Tim Ross, bestselling author and host of the popular podcasts The Basement and Wide Open, was born in Inglewood, California, and went to college to study administration of justice to become a law enforcement officer. But God had other plans and Tim gave his life to Jesus Christ on January 14, 1996, and he started preaching on February 25, 1996. He's been walking with Jesus ever since. In June of 1997, he moved to Dallas, and in the time he's spent in the great state of Texas, Tim served in several ministry capacities, including youth evangelist, young adult pastor, director of student ministries, associate campus pastor, executive pastor of Apostolic Ministries, and lead pastor. Tim now occupies his time as a podcaster, social media influencer, bestselling author, and preacher.Tim's Book:The Missing PeaceConnect with Joshua: jjohnson@shiftingculturepodcast.comGo to www.shiftingculturepodcast.com to interact and donate. This week on Life Between Sundays, I sat down with Tim Ross for one of the most honest and needed conversations I've had on the podcast. We talked about peace, pressure, leadership, burnout, vulnerability, and what it looks like to stay human while serving others. Tim shared openly about the rhythms that have helped him slow down, protect his family, and refuse to let success define him. From putting his phone on "Do Not Disturb" for three years to saying "home is the win," this conversation challenged me deeply. We also went into some heavier but incredibly important topics - silence, temptation, mental health, therapy, pastoral pressure, and why vulnerability might actually be one of the greatest gifts we can give each other. There were multiple moments in this conversation where I honestly felt like I was in a counseling session myself.   If you've been feeling overwhelmed, restless, stretched thin, or just trying to hold it all together, I think this episode will meet you right where you are. Also, he is the host of “The Basement Podcast” and the former lead pastor of Embassy City Church in Irving, Texas. In this interview, we discuss the amazing story of how he got saved, why there is a draw to gang culture, why he was only in a gang for seven days, how he was almost signed to Death Row Records as a 16-year-old, the main reason he went into full-time ministry, what he left his position as a Senior Pastor to start a podcast ministry, the power of therapy for healing, why most men have a natural aversion to therapy, the most effective way to provide accountability for a brother, why he can't stand how most fallen pastors have dealt with their sin, and much more. Let's be honest — Most of us aren't actually moving forward. We're just running away from things that happened years ago, hoping that if we go fast enough, the past won't catch up. We've all heard the advice to "just let it go" or "give it to God," but if it were that easy, why are we still so exhausted? Why does that one mistake from a decade ago still have the power to ruin your Tuesday morning? In this episode of The Leader's Cut, Preston Morrison and Tim Ross are getting back into the gritty reality of what it actually takes to find your "Missing Peace." This isn't a conversation about surface-level "happiness"—it's a deep dive into the parts of your soul you've been trying to ignore. If you feel like you're just surviving your life instead of living it, it's time for a reality check. The Holy Spirit wants to do more than just comfort you; He wants to cut away the trauma that has been making your decisions for you. We're talking about the stuff nobody wants to talk about, including: * The Inner Critic's Real Identity: Who is that voice in your head that's constantly bothered by your mistakes? (Hint: It's not God, and it's not just "you.") * Emotional Indigestion: Why the things you refuse to process are currently defining your future. * The Biology of Peace: How to move the peace of Jesus from a "concept" in your head to a "regulation" in your actual nervous system. * Why You're Not "Here": The real reason you find it impossible to be present with the people you love. * The Trap of Self-Awareness: Why knowing you have a problem isn't the same thing as letting Him cut it out. You can keep running, or you can stop and finally metabolize what's been chasing you. It's time to stop letting start walking in the peace you were actually designed for. This is where true healing begins.

"Are you actually okay?” Most of us have a "Missing Peace" in our lives that we try to fill with everything except the Source. We reach for the promotion, the new house, the hobby, or even a more "spiritual" playlist, hoping the emptiness will finally stop humming in the background. But what if the reason you're still exhausted isn't because you aren't trying hard enough—but because you're trying to heal what you refuse to reveal? In this episode of The Leader's Cut, Preston Morrison is joined by Tim Ross to drop a major reality check on the state of our souls. We're moving past the "just pray about it" platitudes to talk about the spiritual mechanics of peace. If the Holy Spirit is guiding our lives, then peace isn't just a feeling; it's a regulation of your entire being—body, soul, and spirit. This conversation gets into the stuff we usually keep quiet: * The "Fix" Fallacy: Why your coping mechanisms (from video games to "religious" busyness) are actually sending a personal invitation for the enemy to keep you stuck. * The Revelation Requirement: Why the Holy Spirit can't cut away the pain you're still trying to hide. * Body Regulation: The wild truth about how the peace Jesus left you is designed to regulate your physical and emotional responses to a chaotic world. * Moving the Goalposts: Why Jesus didn't save you so you could just "survive" your life—and how to finally start thriving in the freedom He actually paid for. This isn't a lecture on "how to be happier." It's a deep dive into the process of heart-circumcision that leads to true, unshakable freedom. It's time to stop settling for temporary happiness and start walking in the peace you were created for.

Are you missing your peace? Burned out? Anxious? Just searching for something more? This message is for you! We all long for peace but often don't know what we're looking for. We're digging into Luke 19 to discover why true peace isn't the absence of conflict—it's the presence of wholeness that only Jesus can give. As Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a colt of peace, He reveals what really makes for peace... and why so many of us (even religious people) keep missing it. From politics and possessions to relationships and escapes, we look for peace in all the wrong places. But on that first Palm Sunday, Jesus weeps over a city—and a world—that doesn't recognize the King of Peace standing right in front of them. He doesn't bring peace through power or politics, but through humility, sacrifice, and ultimately His blood on the cross. If you're tired of surface-level calm and ready for lasting peace that overcomes the world, this message is for you. This is part of our series "The Way of Jesus" — exploring unique stories in the Gospel of Luke to get up close with who Jesus is and how we follow Him. Come and find your missing peace in Jesus. ---

In this insightful episode of Black Woman Leading, Laura sits down with Dr. Cree Scott, clinical psychologist, workplace performance expert, and founder of Serenity Psy Consulting, to explore what she calls "The Missing Peace in Leadership." Drawing on both psychological science and her work advising Fortune 100 organizations, Dr. Scott explains why so many high-performing leaders are running on empty. Despite access to productivity tools and leadership frameworks, many professionals remain disconnected—from themselves, their teams, and their deeper purpose.  Her upcoming book, The Missing Peace in Leadership, introduces the Integrated Connection Framework, a model designed to restore alignment across three essential dimensions: Connection to Me, Connection to We, and Connection to All. These dimensions help leaders move beyond busyness and burnout to cultivate deeper presence, collective intelligence, and purpose-driven leadership.  Together, Laura and Dr. Scott unpack what it means to reclaim connection in a world that often rewards hyperproductivity and distraction. They explore how leaders—especially Black women navigating systemic pressures and high expectations—can reconnect with their inner grounding, build healthier relationships within teams, and tap into broader ecosystems of wisdom and purpose. Aligned with Season 8's theme Leaning Into Joy, this episode invites listeners to consider how slowing down, reconnecting inwardly, and leading with intention can transform leadership from exhausting to energizing. About Dr. Cree What happens when you combine a clinical psychologist with Fortune 100 leadership consulting? You get a thought leader who doesn't just help executives perform better—she helps them understand why they do what they do and transforms that insight into breakthrough performance. Dr. Cree Scott, is the founder and CEO of Serenity Psy Consulting, where she brings the science of human behavior into the boardroom. As a workplace performance expert, she's worked across industries and sectors, turning complex psychological concepts into practical strategies that transforms how leaders lead. What makes her approach different? She uncovers the blind spots and self-limiting beliefs that even the most successful leaders don't know they have. And she's currently writing the book on it—literally. Her upcoming work, The Missing Peace in Leadership, reveals the overlooked ingredients that turn leadership from exhausting to energizing. Whether you're leading a team of five or five thousand, her approach will challenge how you think about leadership, performance, and what it really takes to inspire yourself and others to do their best work. In this message, The Missing Peace, Tim Ross takes us to Mark 4, where Jesus and the disciples are caught in a violent storm, and raises the question we all whisper in chaotic seasons: “Jesus, don't You care?” While the wind roars and Jesus rests, we learn that peace is not the absence of chaos; it's the courage to trust the One who is peace and the refusal to participate in the panic around you. Tim unpacks how the peace Jesus promised and left with us was designed to steady hearts, regulate minds, and anchor souls in every season. When the Holy Spirit governs your inner world, chaos loses its authority, fear loses its volume, and you become the calm in rooms that once overwhelmed you.NEXT STEPS:Ask for prayer or connect with a pastor: https://freshlife.church/contactRegister your decision to follow Jesus and receive free resources: https://freshlife.church/know-godGive a financial gift to support what God is doing as we take steps forward to see the Gospel reach far and wide: https://freshlife.church/giveSUBSCRIBE:Sign up to receive encouragement straight to your inbox, and to stay up to date with announcements, events, and more: https://church.us13.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=6ea4d82b2567db3e86b7767cd&id=451f2fe63eDon't miss a video! In Part 2 of our Christmas series The Missing Peace, Pastor Travis Hearn delivers a timely and transformational word: Live in Harmony With One Another. As the holidays stir emotions, conflict, and tension, this message reminds us that peace isn't a seasonal feeling—it's a spiritual discipline. From Romans 12:9–18, Pastor Travis unpacks the truth that peace is not accidental, it's intentional. Harmony doesn't just happen—it's chosen, pursued, and often, painfully fought for. Whether it's a tense family dinner or a fractured relationship, you'll be challenged to lay down your pride, your right to be right, and your desire to win. Why? Because peace will cost you—but it's worth everything. This sermon dives deep into how to set your mind on things above, sow seeds of peace, and let the peace of Christ rule your heart. With vivid illustrations and biblical insight, you'll see that peacemaking isn't weakness—it's spiritual maturity. It's family resemblance. Because when we choose peace, we mirror the heart of our Father. This Christmas, let's tear down the fences built by offense and let the Prince of Peace take the throne of our hearts.

In this message from The Missing Peace, Pastor Jon explores what it means to make peace with God. Even when belief remains, it's possible to lose our peace with Him — and this message invites us to examine where that disconnect may exist. At the heart of this message is an invitation to return to honest, restored communion with God. In seasons of questioning, waiting, and unmet expectations, we're reminded that true peace was purchased at a great cost and is found when we repent, realign our hearts, and draw near to Him once again.

Christmas is meant to be a season of peace, yet many find themselves dealing with broken relationships and family conflicts. The solution isn't winning arguments but having the mind of Christ. Philippians 2:5-11 shows us Jesus's example of radical humility: He gave up His divine privileges, took on the form of a servant, moved toward humanity despite our sin, and sacrificed everything for reconciliation. To restore broken relationships, we must follow His example by setting aside our need to be right, approaching conflicts as servants rather than demanding our rights, moving toward those who hurt us, and being willing to sacrifice for peace. Jesus is the missing piece for those missing peace this Christmas.
