Mike Hosking: Nothing is driving the RNZ/TVNZ merger ideology

The Mike Hosking Breakfast

I am glad the RNZ/TVNZ merger is getting the noise it deserves. The trouble with mass reform under ideological Governments is certain things attract headlines and a lot of stuff doesn't. The Fair Pay Agreements, I think, deserved more noise than they got, given the chaos they are going to cause around the economy. And the merger is another such matter than was always going to struggle against scandals like Covid and lockdowns and Three Waters and charging farmers for being farmers. But as the spotlight gets shone on the merger ideology it's become increasingly obvious there is actually nothing that drives it. The Prime Minister, who seems to have settled on an approach of literally making it up as she goes, yesterday suggested that if they didn't merge it Radio New Zealand might collapse. That of course is errant nonsense given the Government writes the cheques. But part of her argument was that they had lost audience, which is correct. Their main programme in the morning has lost a lot of audience. I know, because most of its turned up here. And the reason it's turned up here is we aren't boring. But a merger in and of itself won't change that for them. It's a lot like Ardern's claim that if you don't back Three Waters your rates will increase, which isn't true either. Rates increase all over the place, all the time and none of it has to do with water or central Government because it's not their business. She also rolled out that tired old line that we need more trust in the media, which is true. But it's not directly related to a merger, or indeed the Government having anything to do with media. When pressed, what we have learned is there is not a single solid idea behind any of this. Not a single light bulb moment where you go "ah that's why, that makes sense". Along with their mad polytech idea, the centralisation of health, their obsession with Maorifying everything - the merger just seems to be part of a crazed grab bag of ideological thought bubbles they dreamed up in opposition years ago that they would have a crack at next time they turned up in Government. If I was them I would read the poll which has the majority of us against it, and kill it. If they honestly believe a combination of Willie Jackson and Tracey Martin is broadcasting's future, then it's time they handed the place over to some adults.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week, I'm excited to share the interview of Unstuffed client, Tracey Martin, on her unique experience in my group coaching program. As you know, no two dieters are the same and we all have different challenges, backgrounds, habits, lifestyles, and emotional eating struggles. Tracey was kind enough to open up and share some of hers. Topics discussed: Why Tracey decided to join the program and how it turned out to be exactly what she needed to stop bouncing up and down the scale….and commit to unraveling her emotional ties to food. Tracey shares some of her biggest challenges in the program and how starting the program imperfectly was the breakthrough she didn't know she needed. At what point in the process she witnessed her relationship with food beginning to shift and how she's been able to overcome her self-limiting beliefs and history of self-sabotage. Tracey also discusses why this process "worked" when others never did. Her best piece of advice for those who fear gaining weight if they stop macro/calorie counting, and why confronting this fear is essential for long-term success. Lillian speaks to the Minister about two government announcements from yesterday, the first being an extension of temporary working visas, and the second being a hold on incoming flights to the country. They also touched on a tool the Minister has been working on during her time in government. Just for some more information around the visa extensions, given this is not Martin’s portfolio she indicated she may not have all the details. Minister Iain Lees-Galloway announced yesterday that the Government is "making immediate short-term changes to visa settings to support temporary migrants already onshore in New Zealand and their employers, while also ensuring New Zealanders needing work are prioritised". So this means,  - Extending all existing employer-assisted temporary work visas for people in New Zealand and whose visas are due to expire before the end of 2020 by six months, benefiting around 16,500 workers - Shifting the stand down by 6 months to February 2021. So this affects migrant workers who are subject to the 12 month stand-down period and were going to have to leave New Zealand this year will now be able to stay for the duration of the extension, and that affects 600 workers. The stand-down period being the amount of time one has to leave the country before applying to come back and work. The government states that, The stand-down period was introduced in 2017 to prevent lower-skilled, lower-paid foreign workers from becoming well settled in New Zealand without a pathway to residence. Just a note here because of the way in which lower-skilled as a term has negative connotations, the Government is continuing to work on a number of changes, which were announced pre-COVID-19. These changes include a different way to define lower-skilled/lower-paid employment and a new process for employer-assisted work visas expected to be fully in place by mid-2021. - Finally, the last part of the announcement was ensuring New Zealanders needing work continue to be prioritised. So back to Tracey Martin, Lillian started by asking her how this will work.   EDIT: Minister Iain Lees-Galloway's response 08/07/2020: “Temporary work visas are there to fill temporary gaps in the labour market and that is clear when people apply for temporary visas. Work to residency is only available for more skilled jobs where there is a longer term skills shortage. “The extension to visas announced yesterday is to give people breathing space to work out what is best for them. The New Zealand labour market is changing as more New Zealanders lose their jobs and as always, immigration is there to fill the gaps in our labour market. As the gaps close, there may be fewer opportunities for temporary migrant workers. “We value the contribution our migrant communities make to New Zealand and it’s great that many do become residents and citizens. However, like in most countries around the world, temporary immigration is for temporary work opportunities. That’s a choice people make for themselves. [on the low-skilled issue] “Last year we introduced changes to the employer assisted temporary work visas that includes introducing the use of pay rates as a proxy for skills. In the vast majority of cases higher skilled roles are paid above the median wage so the median wage is being used to assess the skill level, instead of complicated skills assessments under ANZCO.”

Helping young people stay connected and supported is a key part of the Government's latest announcement.More than $150 million is being invested over the next four years into a new support service to help young people transition from state care into adulthood. The funding's expected to help about 3000 young people aged 18 to 25.It will also fund those aged over 18 to remain with their caregiver up to the age of 21.Children's Minister, Tracey Martin, told Kate Hawkesby it's designed to ensure no one has to figure it out for themselves. She says it's important they have someone to turn to for help when they encounter milestones in their lives like signing their first lease agreement.Martin says it's hard to know exactly how many people will require the service, given 50 per cent of young people feel they don't have support elsewhere.

This Government is lurching towards another embarrassing stuff up, either based on their naiveté, or their incompetence, or a belief they can do whatever they like because they know best.Internal Affairs Minister Tracey Martin has announced that the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Bill will be deferred to deal with problems caused by the select committee process. This is the bill that streamlines these administrative processes as they try to make it easier to do the paperwork online.  But it also attracted some controversy when it outlined ways for transgender people to self-identify their gender. It’s a big change from the current regime which is a Family Court process that requires evidence of medical advice and treatment. This change caused a lot of surprise and condemnation when it came to light and a lot of mickey taking.  Callers to talkback were amazed that you might be able to change something as fundamental as your gender without a burden of third party impartial proof and assessment.  I had people texting me and asking that if they self-identified as wealthy or attractive would it work?So why has the whole idea been put on hold?  Did the government just get cold feet, the way they've been getting cold feet on all sorts of transformative policies they've floated?Tracey Martin said there has been inadequate public consultation given how significant the proposed changes are and the clauses were added at select committee after submissions on the bill had closed. Can I just repeat that - clauses added after submissions had closed!Frankly, this is worse than the Government thinking it went too far.  This is a fundamental cock up, if you’ll excuse the term, but it feels apt. The whole point of select committees is to raise some ideas, prepare some legislation and ask for submissions on the proposed rules and after three readings come up with some laws.  If you throw in un-notified changes after submissions close, you are flaunting the entire process of making law.At its worst, you could call it authoritarian and dictatorial.  We’ll just make up whatever law we like and enforce it. Well done to Crown Law for picking this up, but it raises some big questions about the way this Government is working.  Are they just stupid?  Or do they have a radical agenda they’re trying to sneak under the radar?Meanwhile, transgender activists are quite upset the whole things been put on hold.  What about all those people that have differing genders on their driving licences and their birth certificates when it comes to a situation where they need two IDs. Well frankly that’s not enough an excuse to throw away the democratic process. What about students forced to wear the wrong uniforms or go to the wrong toilet? One thing I know from the families I have known dealing with this stuff is that negotiation and communication amongst the affected parties is always what is needed most rather than a law.I also know from families facing these gender issues is that self-identification is obviously the first step. But before you can be granted the power to change legal documents, however you feel, there has to be a burden of proof and approval from an independent third party.  At the moment, that’s the family court.  That could change, but providing independent evidence should not.

Andrew Dickens: Waka jumpers should quit and get a new mandate from the people

Andrew Dickens Afternoons

I thought I ought to discuss this waka jumping scenario today. To be fair, I haven’t talked about it or run talkback on it because it seemed to me to be one of those no-brainer policies that everyone would agree with.Because, after all, a party MP is elected either by an electorate or through the list system and a fundamental part of the decision to appoint them is that they align themselves with a party, it’s policies and the fellow members. If that MP decides to leave that party then the MP is also abandoning a significant amount of the mandate that put him or her there in the first place. Enough for me to say, quit and seek a new mandate. But this morning Mark Mitchell was on with Mike Hosking and explaining why anti waka jumping laws are a bad thing. So here is his example. He said that the people of Rodney elected him knowing he was part of the National Party.  If the National Party then changes it’s policies so much that he feels it no longer represents the mandate that it received, he felt that he should have the right to call them out, quit the party and stay in the job as the true voice of Rodney. For a moment there I thought fair enough and then the alarms bells started ringing again. What if it wasn’t the party that changed but Mark Mitchell.  Does the electorate have the same right to say you’ve changed, you no longer represent us and throw him out? Of course not. If that was the case I wonder if any politician would ever serve a full term.At its heart, a person who thinks waka jumping is OK is a person who thinks they know better than the electorate they serve and better than the party they joined. It’s more than a little narcissistic and arrogant. No wonder the Greens thinks it’s a great idea as they’re a party full of people who know best.If you want to waka jump then quit and get a new mandate from the people you claim to serve. Mark Mitchell this morning says why should the country be burdened by the cost of a by-election?  To that I say, it’s the price of democracy. And maybe bearing that cost in mind might make you think twice before deciding you as an MP know better than the electorate or the party. Also from this morning is the Pauline Kingi affair over the inquiry into Wally Haumaha. Maybe Tracey Martin is just ignorant. I’m on Linked In.  I know that to endorse anyone or anything you have to press a button. I’ve never endorsed anyone. Dr Kingi must have pushed the button on Wally unless she gave her log on to someone else. She’s already copped criticism because she is investigating the process of selection of senior public servants a job she has done. In other words, she’s being asked to judge the work of workmates. That’s also a bit dodgy. But my big question and one no-one asked this morning is why Tracey Martin is so determined to keep Dr Kingi. Me, I’d just say sorry Pauline, not your fault, move on and find someone else, preferably one from the private sector.  Meanwhile, if I was Pauline Kingi I’d quit and run for the hills away from these amateurs.

Tracey Martin is not big on resolutions.  In fact, she is 100% anti-resolution.  Martin, a life strategist based in Scottsdale, Arizona, believes life is a journey and we should never stop.  Not even when a goal is met or a resolution is checked off our list.   When it comes to that life journey, Martin encourages people to stop thinking so much about the exterior, and start taking better care of what's on the inside.   It is personal development “beyond the gym”. “Change the weight to wait,” she says.  As in, “WHAT are you waiting for?”   It is a spiritual and holistic approach to happiness.  One she says has worked well for her as a busy mom, wife (married for 21 years), and successful businesswoman.      With her clients, Martin works to develop passion, potential and purpose.  “If those things line up,” she says, “you will find yourself in a really wonderful place.” For 2016, one area of focus for Martin is helping people to hear their own “self-talk soundtrack”.  You know the one that plays over and over.   “It would be so interesting if we could put a speaker inside our head as to what we say about others, and what we say about ourselves.” In trying to get people to focus, and change, that self-talk soundtrack, Martin likes to ask people self-reflective questions: What has happened in your life if you can't carve out an hour to meet with a friend in need? What has happened in your life If you can't pick up your child up from school with a warm smile and a hug? What has happened in your life if you are short tempered with your spouse and they just walked in the door? Set yourself up for success not failure, she says.  “Are you with the right group of people to take you where you need to go in 2016?” It's good advice as we navigate this new year that brings with it new opportunities to learn and grow.  Most of all, this moment — right now — provides the perfect opportunity to better ourselves from the inside out. “If you share from a place of vulnerability, the real healing happens.”  Tracey Martin is a Life and Wellness Coach based in Scottsdale, Arizona. At an early age, she was the victim of domestic violence.  Martin says walking out of that violent relationship helped frame the way she sees life.  She believes the key is focusing on the future, not the past. Martin is living proof that the strategy is a good one. Not only is she a successful coach, she also has a fashion line, Threads of Evolution www.threadsofevolution.com Her handbags can frequently be seen on the arms of celebrities like Julia Roberts. We asked for her top tips when it comes to improving overall health and wellness. It all starts and ends with food, she says.  “Food is your medicine.  Understand what you are taking in and why you are taking it in.” Martin then shared the following tips: Learn to understand and channel your own intuition. Martin has 15 questions she asks her coaching clients.  The first one is Are You Happy? “It is amazing to me how many people have to stop and think about it,” she says.  “They have gotten so numb they can't understand what it feels like to be happy.”  In large part, she says, it has to do with the fact that so many people are unhappy with work.  “If you love what you do, it feeds your soul.” Realizing fear is an illusion. “You always have the power to change your reality.”  In relationships and in work, Martin says people make the mistake of giving their power away.   “When you take that back it is a piece of the puzzle you are putting back together.” Being your own advocate, using your voice, and asking powerful questions. Owning your own greatness. There needs to be a call to action in each of our lives.  “People always talk about their fear of failure.”  Martin says, “I think more people are fearful of success.  Once you have that, then what?  It is fear of the unknown.” Start with what is in front of you. It can be overwhelming if you try to fix everything all at once.  Start with what it in front of you and there will be a ripple effect with the rest.
