Welcome back, custmers! I recently took a vacation from the video store to go on a cruise with my wife. I've had cruises on the brain ever since, so what better time to recommend some of my favorite films that take place on ships! OVERBOARD (1987)Handyman and single-father Dean Proffitt sees an opportunity to get even with a pompous heiress named Joanna after an accident leaves her with amnesia. Dean takes advantage of the woman's lack of memory and convinces her that she is his wife and the mother of his four children. What starts out as a simple bit of revenge gets complicated as relationships are formed… and broken. Starring real life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Dean and Annie, with appearances from Edward Herrmann, Roddy McDowall, and Mike Hagerty. CABIN BOY (1994)In this utterly bizarre comedy starring Chris Elliott, Nathan Mayweather is a spoiled and tone-deaf “fancy lad” who accidentally boards the wrong ship and finds himself sailing the seas with a grizzled crew of career fishermen. The plot is silly, the jokes are weird, and the comedy is abstract. One moment cabin boy Mayweather is talking to imaginary cupcakes and in the next, he's being rescued from the depths of the ocean by Choki — half-man, half-shark. Cabin Boy was such a box office failure that director Adan Resnick literally never directed another film. I love this movie and my wife will get in her car and leave the house when I watch it. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's for you.THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972)If you've ever wondered what's the worst that could happen while sailing on a cruise ship, you'll soon find out. Due to a series of unfortunate events, the unstable ship is knocked over by a 90-foot-tall wave. Passengers must work together to find a way out of the upside-down cruise ship before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. This multi-Academy Award winner features an all-star cast including Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and more. CITY HUNTER (1993)Jackie Chan is known for his wacky action flicks, and this may be the wackiest of them all. In City Hunter, Chan plays Ryu, a private detective hired to find a missing woman. Ryu and his assistant Kaori track the woman to a cruise ship and follow her there, only to discover the ship is being hijacked by terrorists. Ryu is the ultimate ladies man — they love him and he loves them. City Hunter is part comedy and part action. It's like if they remade Porky's and added machine gun wielding terrorists who constantly mow down passengers in cold blood. Is this film for everybody? No. But is it for anybody? Also, maybe not. Jackie Chan said City Hunter is the least favorite film he ever worked on, which made me pick up a copy and add it to the video store's library.Usually when my wife and I go on cruises the only thing I worry about is them running out of pudding or margaritas. After watching these I'll be keeping an eye out for terrorists, gigantic waves, and terrorists. If any of those things happen I'll cross my fingers and hope for amnesia. 1819 News has no problem calling out both bad actors and bad things in state government. That being said, we think it is just as important to highlight good people doing good things. This week 1819 News CEO Bryan Dawson sits down with State Senator Chris Elliott who has consistently been a strong voice for good in the Alabama Senate. That includes being a “no” vote, despite tremendous pressure, on the terrible gambling legislation last session. In this podcast you will hear about how Sen Elliott got into politics as well as some of the things he's working on this session. From reeling in occupational licensing and out of control state agency boards to speaking up for veterans and sensible infrastructure spending, Elliott is consistently doing what's right no matter the push back. Dawson and Elliott also discuss prison conditions as well as the mismanagement of building new prisons and how that can be fixed moving forward. Overtime Segment: How do we bring Trump's energy into state government? Greg visits with State Senator Chris Elliott (Baldwin County) about events this week in Montgomery. He answers questions about a 7-hour filibuster by Democrats delaying votes on several of his bills. The two also comment on Gov. Ivey's spat with the Alabama Federation of Republican Women over the Alabama State Veterans Board issue which Elliott voted No. Finally, they discuss the potential of a gambling bill this legislative session and if legalizing gambling would end the issue once and for all in Alabama.
Send us a textKatie and Bridget deal with six more weeks of winter as they re-watch the movie: Groundhog Day! That's right! There's apparently no apostrophe "s" when you say that title! We're confused by it too! Come along as we meet Phil, a cranky weatherman who gets stuck in a literal hell hole of reliving the same day over and over again, where he remembers its repeating but nobody else does. It sounds like it should be a horror movie (which it kind of is), but also it's really deep and moving and philosophical and funny and, and, and... Listen there's a lot of days happening here so ya kinda get all the emotions okay!? This movie brings fourth lots of deep questions such as: How long do groundhogs live for? Why is the groundhog put into air jail instead of actually getting to potentially see his shadow? WHERE is the groundhog's paternity leave!? ...Alright fine maybe this movie just really brought fourth a lot of questions about GROUNDHOGS! Released in 1993 (the best year for movies), it was written and directed by Harold Ramis and stars Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, as well as every character actor ever.
Send us a textKatie and Bridget hijack a snow plow as they re-watch the Nickelodeon movie: Snow Day! It's a movie all about how "anything can happen on a Snow Day!" - particularly lots of felonies, stalking, and engagement in every single winter sport that's ever existed. WE SAID ANYTHING GUYS! Come along as we meet Natalie, a girl with possible early onset schizophrenia who wishes for a Snow Day and gets her wish granted with a possible magic snow globe! But Natalie's not satisfied with just one snow day, she wants the apparently "impossible" double snow day ...Did we mention this takes place in Syracuse, NY? With the help of her friends they work to take down the evil Snow Plow Man. Oh yeah there's also a terrible stalking subplot with her older brother Hal and some of his friends, but honestly that storyline is just so terrible and creepy so we'll spare you the nonsense. We've got random cameos, little Josh Pecks, and a bird named Trudy all wrapped up into this time period of a film. Released in 2000, it stars Chevy Chase, Schuyler Fisk, Jean Smart, Mark Webber, Chris Elliott, Pam Grier, Josh Peck, Zena Grey, Damian Young, and Rozonda 'Chilli' Thomas.
